January 1

The countrywide non-stop blockade, called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance as its last-ditch effort to resist the January 5 ‘one-sided’ parliamentary polls, began at 6am.

In Chandpur District, Faruk Patwary (35), an activist of Jubo Dal was killed and 20 others injured in a clash between blockaders and BGB. 17 opposition activists were arrested in the District.

In Chittagong District, 15 masked men exploded four to five crude bombs to create panic in the area leaving three persons injured. Police arrested three youths in connection with the incident.

In Chittagong District, the driver of a microbus of TV channel Somoy was injured as JeI-ICS cadres hurled a crude bomb at the vehicle.

In Gazipur District, two traders and a truck driver suffered burns injuries as blockaders threw petrol bombs at a truck at Kaliakoir.   The injured were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

In Dhaka city, a woman was injured as blockaders blasted crude bombs at Chankharpool. Rehana Akhter Kajol, a housewife, was hit in the face by splinters of crude bombs while she was going to Kamrangirchar by a rickshaw.

Law enforcers arrested 37 people in Sylhet District, 10 in Jhenidah District, seven in Satkhira District and a BNP leader in Madaripur District for carrying out vandalism, arson attacks and subversive activities.

Three persons - Kabir Hossain (25), Abdul Aziz (45), and Azizul Islam (35) were injured when JeI-ICS cadres equipped with lethal weapons swooped on the campaigners of AL candidate Saiful Karim in Padmashakra area of Satkhira District.

RAB and Police foiled founding anniversary celebrations of the JP led by HM Ershad in Dhaka city. Police told that the party had no permission to hold such a political programme in the diplomatic zone.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in an election rally at Mirpur Adarsha High School ground in Dhaka city said different quarters are conspiring to thwart the January 5 elections that are important for continuing the constitutional process in the country.

January 2

A leader of AL was killed by the activists of Jubo Dal at Putimari Dola village in Lalmonirhat District. The deceased, Sabbir Ahmed Raju (24) was general secretary of Mogholhat union unit of the pro-AL.

Joint forces arrested 10 cadres of JeI-ICS from different areas of Satkhira District on charge of their involvement in vandalism and subversive activities.

In Joypurhat District, Joint Forces arrested five activists of BNP and two cadres of JeI-ICS cadres. They were held on charges of involvement in vandalism and subversive activities during the recent blockade programmes.

In Jhenaidah District, Joint Forces arrested two JeI cadres and a BNP man for their alleged involvement setting fire to vehicles and blocking roads in the name of blockade.

The Government did not accept resignations of Ershad-led JP’s Ministers from the ‘polls-time cabinet’ of Sheikh Hasina till the last office day before the January 5 national polls.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressing the nation said “Election would be held under an independent and strong Election Commission, not under any unelected persons.”

CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said the indefinite blockade called by the opposition parties would not affect the January 5 parliamentary elections.

EC expressed its concern to the President Abdul Hamid, that law and order might deteriorate even after the January 5 elections and requested him to keep troops on-duty even after January 9.

The BNP chairperson’s advisory council member Osman Farruk asked the Prime Minister to take steps for a dialogue cancelling the ‘farcical elections,’ scheduled for January 5, to hold inclusive elections.

A faction of JP leaders formally announced an eight-point election manifesto and claimed that the party is contesting the January 5 polls with the consent of HM Ershad and his spouse Rawshan Ershad.

ICS cadres cut the tendons of an AL activist in Raniganj area of Dinajpur District. The victim is Muhamad Shawkat Hossain (35).

January 3

At least two persons, Mohamad Shah Newaz (30) and Adinur Rahman (24), were killed and three others were injured as a truck fell into a roadside ditch when BNP-led opposition blockaders hurled a petrol bomb on the vehicle near Hili Land Port in Dinajpur District.

Three persons, including a woman passenger, sustained severe burn injuries when miscreants hurled a petrol bomb on a bus near Ruposhi Bangla Hotel in Dhaka city. 

In Chapainawabganj District, three truckers were injured at Kansat when blockaders hurled petrol bombs at the truck. The injured are drivers Jamaatul Islam (40), Azizul Islam (50) and Mohammad Arif (20).

In Magura District, two truckers were injured when blockaders hurled petrol bombs at two running trucks on the highway in Parnanduajali area.

In Feni District, attackers set fire to five schools. The schools are: Omarpur Sultana Memorial Girls' High School, Gojaria Adarsha Academy, Nayanpur Govt Primary School, Basiriah Madrasa and Karimullah High School.       

In Sitakunda District, miscreants’ brunt material for setting up a poll centre kept in the extended building of Alam Shafi Primary School in the municipality on January 3. The school premise was chosen as a poll centre.

The president of Government Azizul Haque College unit of ICS had his wrist blown off in a blast while he was allegedly making crude bombs at Jamil Nagar of Bogra District. Police later arrested Jewel from Bogra Islami Hospital. 

EC secretary Dr Mohammad Sadik said the poll will be held under heightened security in 147 constituencies, where 390 candidates will contest. He said “We are ready to conduct the poll in a proper manner. We are hopeful that we will be able to conduct a free and fair poll.”

Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN Dr AK Abdul Momen addressing an opinion sharing meeting with journalists at the circuit house in Sylhet District said observation was not mandatory for a free and fair election in a country like Bangladesh, while the likes of the USA, UK, and Malaysia did not have this practice.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in a statement signed by her press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan said ‘I call upon countrymen to fully boycott the disgraceful farce in the name of election of January 5. None at home and abroad would give legitimacy to this farce as election.’

HRW in a press statement issued urged the Government to end its crackdown on the political opposition leaders and activists, and create conditions for free and fair elections. “Bangladesh is heading into the new year with violence at the polls and human rights protections missing in action,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at HRW.

January 4

In Thakurgaon District, Abdul Jabbar (50), an assistant presiding officer was killed in an attack by anti-election activists on a polling centre in Sadar sub-District. Five Policemen were also injured in the attack.

In Lalmonirhat District, Mobarak Hosain (32), a local leader of BNP's volunteer wing Swechchhasebak Dal, was killed in a clash between AL and BNP supporters.

In Dinajpur District, Babul Hossain (45), a ward-level leader of BNP was killed in a clash between anti-election elements and Police in Nasipur area of the Sadar sub-District.

25 people were injured in an hour-long gunfight prompted by an attack by BNP men on a BCL gathering in Ishwardi sub-Dsitrict of Pabna Dsitrict. Police arrested nine BNP activists in connection with the clash and vandalism.

Anti-election activists vandalised a train at Ishwardi railway station in Ishwardi sub-Dsitrict of Pabna Dsitrict leaving 10 passengers injured. Joint Forces launched a drive following the incident and arrested 12 people from different areas.

Eight leaders and activists of BCL and Jubo League were injured when miscreants hurled a crude bomb at a procession brought out by district unit BCL in Bogra town of Bogra District.

182 polling centres were torched in 36 Districts - 38 were reported from Rangpur; 22 from Bogra; 11 from Comilla; 10 from Jessore; seven from Gaibandha; six each from Mymensingh, Manikganj and Gaibandha; five each from Rajshahi, Chittagong and Feni;  four each from Barguna, Netrakona, Tangail, Nilphamari, Rajshahi, Khulna and Laxmipur; three each from Feni, Jhenidah, Dinajpur, Sunamganj, Sherpur and Sirajganj;  two each from Kishoreganj, Brahmanbaria and Sylhet; and one each from Dhaka, Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Natore, Kushtia, Moulvibazar, Naogaon, and Kurigram Districts.

12 polling centres were torched in Laxmipur, Tangail, Gopalganj, Jhenaidah, Rajshahi Districts. Miscreants set fire to two polling centres in Jhenidah, three in Laxmipur and Rajshahi, and four in Tangail Districts.

BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance's 48-hour countrywide hartal began alongside its ongoing non-stop blockade programme demanding cancellation of January 5's "farcical" election and protesting "confinement" of party chief Khaleda Zia.

Candidates contesting in the January 5 controversial elections with AL ticket have been instructed to adopt any means to ensure at least 60 per cent turnout of voters at the polling centre.

Joint Force arrested 16 activists of the opposition BNP and JeI-ICS during separate drives in Satkhira District. The Joint Force recovered 3 kg of gunpowder and two bottles of acid from Bhomra Land Port area in Sadar sub-District.

EC directed the electoral inquiry committee concerned to take action against Jessore AL lawmaker Sheikh Afil Uddin who has instructed the party members to vote again and again during January's elections.

January 5

Elections were held in 147 out of 300 constituencies across the country amid high tension and fear following the unprecedented violence and boycott by the main opposition BNP. Beginning at 8:00am, vote casting continued without any break amid a low turnout in all the 147 constituencies where election was held.

Counting of votes in the controversial 10th parliamentary election began shortly after the voting ended at 4:00 pm.

AL secured a huge majority in the 10th parliamentary election winning 102 out of the 147 seats up for election, according to unofficial results. Meanwhile, JP won 13 seats while JSD won two and WP won four seats. Independent candidates won in 12 constituencies. One candidate each from BNF, Bangladesh Tarikat Federation and a rebel AL candidate came victorious.

The EC decided to hold the polls again in 8 constituencies: Dinajpur-4, Kurigram-4, Gaibandha-1, Gaibandha-3, Gaibandha-4, Jessore-5 and Laksmipur-1.

Not a single vote was cast in at least 41 polling centres of 11 Districts, a phenomenon the nation has never before witnessed.  Of the polling centres, 27 were in Lalmonirhat, while four in Jhenidah, two in Satkhira, and one each in, Feni, Sylhet, Cox's Bazar, Chuadanga, Dinajpur, Naogaon, Rajshahi and Sirajganj Districts.

CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad identified boycott by some political parties and thick fog as reasons for low voter turnout in the 10th parliamentary election.

Four election observers from India and Bhutan, the only foreign poll monitors in Dhaka, certified the controversial voting as ‘smooth’. They, however, declined to say whether or not the virtually voter less election was credible, transparent or fair. 

25 candidates, mostly independent ones, reportedly withdrew from the race in the 10th parliamentary election in protest against vote rigging and beating up of their polling agents in several Districts including Dhaka, Brahmanbaria, Laxmipur, Sirajganj, Barisal and Jamalpur, reports New Age.

Two factions of JP rejected the ‘farcical’ polls outright and demanded holding of a fresh, inclusive and fair election immediately. Terming the national polls a stigma for the Bangladeshi nationals, the JP factions, led by HM Ershad and Kazi Zafar Ahmed, also thanked the people for rejecting the one-sided elections.  

Six independent candidates and a JSD candidate boycotted the polls alleging vote rigging by their ruling party rivals. The boycott took place in Manikganj, Barisal, Barguna, Sherpur, Laxmipur, Pabna and Dhaka Districts.

HT Imam, co-chairman of the AL’s election steering committee claimed that the 10th parliamentary election was held in a free, fair and credible manner.

In Thakurgaon District, three BNP men were killed as law enforcers opened fire on the BNP and JeI cadres who tried to bar voters from casting their votes at a polling centre in Sadar sub-District. The deceased were identified as Joynal (21), Harun (20) and Abu Hanif (28). At least 50 others were injured during the attacks.

In Dinajpur District, an Ansar member and two opposition men were killed and five others injured by JeI-ICS cadres as the law enforcers were trying to resist the cadres from attacking a polling centre in the sub-District.

In Rangpur District, two JeI cadres were killed as Police opened fire on the cadres who were trying to seize a polling centre in Pirgachha sub-District.

In Nilphamari District, two JeI-ICS cadres, Jahangir Alam (22) and Jaldhaka Mamtajul Haque (45), were killed in Police firing when they were trying to torch a polling centre.

In Feni District, Jamshed Alam (25), an activist of Jubo Dal and Shahidullah, a cadre of ICS, were killed in Police firing in Sonagazi sub-District when Police tried to foil the opposition activists' bid to snatch ballot papers from Uttor Char Chandia Government Primary School. Another ICS cadre was injured in the Police firing.

In Laxmipur District, Victim Mohammad Rubel (22), a cadre of ICS was killed and two more were injured when Police open fire on them during a clash in Ramganj sub-District.

In Munshiganj District, Kangkan (24), joint secretary of JCD Shimulia union was killed in Tongibari sub-District.

In Chittagong District, Lalu (23), a cadre of ICS was killed in Police firing during a clash between the opposition activists and law enforcers in Lohagora sub-District.

In Naogoan District, a BNP activist was killed as joint forces opened fire in Manda sub-District. The deceased was identified as Babul Hossain (25). Six others were injured in the incident.

In Gaibandha District, a cadre of ICS was killed and 22 others were injured during a clash between AL and JeI-ICS cadres in Sundarganj sub-District. The deceased was identified as Shahabul Islam (22).

In Jessore District, a BNP activist was killed by law enforcers while looting a polling centre and torching ballot papers in Monirampur sub-District. The deceased was identified as Motier Rahman (28).

Nuruzzaman (25), a trucker who sustained burn injuries when hartal supporters hurled a petrol bomb on his vehicle in Gazipur District on January 4, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital of Dhaka city.

In Rangpur District, Farooque Hossain (34), an activist of Swechchhasebak Dal, BNP's volunteer wing succumbed to his injuries at Rangpur Medical College Hospital a day after AL activists stabbed him during a clash in Patgram sub-District of Lalmonirhat District.

Miscreants set fire to 47 polling centres in Dinajpur and Lalmonirhat District. In Dinajpur Dsitrict, 32 polling centres out of 52 were burnt in Khansama sub-District and 12 out of 68 centres afire in Chirirbandar sub-District.

In Lalmonirhat District, anti-election activists torched three polling centers - Vandardah, Kuchlibari and Jamuna Government Primary Schools - in Patgram sub-District. Being resisted, the attackers beat up three law enforcers and a presiding officer at Vandardah Government Primary School and snatched all the ballot boxes from the centre.

In Jessore District, miscreants blasted eight crude bombs at polling centers set up at eight Government Primary Schools in Monirumpur and Jhikorgachha sub-Districts. Of them, three crude bombs explosion were reported at three polling stations in Monirumpur sub-District while five in five centers in Jhikorgachha sub-District.

100 crude bombs were exploded near different polling centers in Sadar, Kolaroa, Tala and Kolaroa sub-Districts of Satkhira District. Police fired several rounds of bullets in the air to bring the situation under control. However, no causality was reported.

In Noakhali District, an activist of Juba League who was injured in the post-election violence died in a hospital. The activist, Mahfuz Alam (24), was fatally injured when opposition men pounced on a victory procession of AL and Juba League at Gazaria bazar in the District.

In Dinajpur District, an opposition activist, Muhamad Asadullah (18), succumbed to his injuries after law enforcers assaulted him up following a clash with AL activists at a polling station in Birganj sub-District.

January 6

Fresh 48-hour nationwide hartal, called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance demanding the cancellation of the 10th parliamentary election held on January 5, began at 6am. The shutdown is also meant for protesting the arrest of the opposition leaders and activists.

In Dhaka city supporters of the defeated AL candidate Abdul Mannan attacked the followers of the wining Jatiya Party (JP) candidate Salma Islam at Hazarbigha village triggering violent clashes. During the fighting, Musa Khandakar (55), Masud Khandaker (28) and Makbul Hossain Munshi (32) were killed.  Another 25 people were injured.

20 activists of BNP and AL were injured in post-poll violence in two sub-Districts of Khagrachhari District. In Panchhari sub-District, 15 people were injured in a clash. In Manikchhari sub-District, five people were injured in another clash between the activists of the two rival parties.

Three poll officials were arrested at Sarail Uchaliapara Government Primary School centre in Brahmanbaria District while stamping ballot papers in favour of JP candidate advocate Ziaul Haque Mridha. The arrestees are assistant presiding officer Zubeda Khatun and polling officers Kahinoor Begum and Nasima Khatun.

Seven activists of BNP and JeI were arrested for attacks on minority Hindu community. Two JeI cadres were arrested for attacks on Hindus in Jessore District while five BNP supporters were arrested in Dinajpur District.

US, UK, Canada and Commonwealth termed the just-concluded parliamentary elections in Bangladesh “disappointing” as more than half of the seats were uncontested and the remaining ones showed only token opposition.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asserted that her re-election in the much-disputed polls was legitimate and appealed to her arch-rival, BNP chief Khaleda Zia, to shun “terrorism”.

Khaleda Zia, the BNP Chairperson demanded cancellation of the 10th parliamentary polls and handing over power to a non-party neutral Government to pave the way for consensus to hold fair and participatory elections.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in an interview with the NYTsaid her electoral alliance with JeI as ‘not a permanent alliance’ and could reconsider her party’s electoral ties with JeI.

CPB demanded that the Government to ban JeI-ICS and destroy the organization’s properties and networks. CPB also urged the Government to hold a free and fair national election with participation of all parties.

January 7

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a statement said “The UN will continue to support the country’s democratic processes in accordance with the principles of inclusiveness, non-violence, reconciliation and dialogue.”

Shah Alam (35), a truck driver was killed and Al Amin (32), the helper of the truck sustained injuries as miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a potato-laden truck at Horgati of Sirajganj District.

In Bhola District, Police arrested Earul Alam Liton, president of District unit Jubo Dal, the youth organisation of BNP.

In Khagrachhari District, Police arrested seven leaders and activists of BNP from different areas. In Joypurhat District, Joint Forces in separate drives arrested four activists of BNP and JeI on suspicion of their involvement in sabotage acts.

In Bogra District, DB of Police arrested JeI leader Mamunur Rashid (35) accused in the case for March 03, 2013 violence that saw arson and vandalism in Bogra town.

Police arrested two JeI leaders in Sylhet city of Sylhet District on charge of clashing with law enforcers. The arrested are Sylhet District unit Ameer (Chief) Anwar Hossain Khan and Secretary Islam Uddin.

January 8

Two persons, who were burnt in a petrol bomb attack at Shahbagh in Dhaka city on January 3, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. The deceased were identified as Shahina Akter (42), an insurance worker and Farid Miah, a fruit trader.

British High Commissioner Robert Gibson met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her Gulshan residence in Dhaka city. Khaleda and the British envoy exchanged their views on the latest political situation, post election development and other mutual interest of the two countries.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith said he would propose in the next Parliament to enact a law banning hartal to save people's lives and the economy. “Hartal should be banned. Whoever calls hartal now becomes violent, and a violent protest is acceptable in no way,” he told

CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad claimed that the commission successfully held the 10th parliamentary election on January 5. He said “We have been able to complete the election fairly despite huge adversity. It is a big achievement. Nearly 40 percent of the votes were cast in 139 constituencies.”

January 9

MPs-elect took oath at the Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka city. Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury administered the oath. The EC on January 8 issued a gazette notification on the election of 290 lawmakers in the 10th parliamentary polls.

AL chief Sheikh Hasina was invited by the President to form Government after the AL clinched a landslide victory in the parliamentary election on January 5 by bagging 231 parliamentary seats of 300 seats in the face of a boycott of the polls by the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance.  

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs said “The EU urges all parties to refrain from violence and to engage in genuine dialogue to agree on a mutually acceptable way forward to strengthen democratic accountability and to hold transparent, inclusive and credible elections, putting the interests of the people of Bangladesh first.”

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said stern action would be taken against those involved in attacks on Hindu minorities’ post-election. She urged opposition BNP leader Khaleda Zia to “stop attacks” on the minority community else, the Government would take “appropriate measures.”  

January 10

Muhamad Mitul (22), the driver of a human hauler lost his battle for life at the ICU of Chittagong Medical College Hospital in Chittagong District. Mitul suffered 80 percent burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack at Technical intersection in Chittagong city on January 6.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who had been elected either prime minister or leader of the opposition since restoration of democracy in 1991, is losing all the state facilities for the first time in more than two decades as Sheikh Hasina is all set to become the Prime Minister on January 12 and JP Presidium Member Raushan Ershad is set to play the role of leader of the opposition.

The Government is set to file a petition with a War Crimes Tribunal for the trial and banning of JeI for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, 1971. The petition will be filed within the first week of next month, barrister Tureen Afroz, one of the prosecutors, said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina warned against political violence and attacks on the minorities, and said the Government “will act as tough as it takes” to save lives and properties of people.”

The EC has taken the decision of keeping the army personnel deployed in eight constituencies till January 17 to ensure peaceful conduct of re-polling in 392 centres on January 16. The eight constituencies are Dinajpur-4, Kurigram-4, Gaibandha-1, 3 and 4, Bogra-7, Jessore-5 and Laxmipur-1.

January 12

A leader of ICS was killed and 30 others were injured as ICS and BCL clashed in Chittagong University of Chittagong District. The deceased was identified as Muhamad Mamun (27). The Police arrested 18 ICS cadres from the University.

Sheikh Hasina was sworn in for her second straight term as Prime Minister and third overall, following one of the most violent elections in the country's history. President Abdul Hamid also swore in 29 cabinet ministers and 19 deputies.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that she is willing to take “all possible steps” to protect democracy if a consensus can be reached with the BNP-led opposition alliance. She also reiterated that the BNP has to sever its ties with JeI before holding any talks with the Government.

Sheikh Hasina said that she would never bow to any national or international pressures regarding the just-concluded parliamentary polls.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a statement said an ominous journey of democracy has begun with the oath-taking of an “illegal and immoral Government” led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Police arrested two cadres of outlawed BCP along with arms and ammunitions at Charulia village of Chuadanga District. The arrestees were Zaker Ali (40) and Basu Biswas (36). Police recovered two pistols and two bullets from them.

January 13

An auto-rickshaw driver Mohammad Bashir was injured in a crude bomb explosion in Chittagong city of Chittagong District. Police said ICS cadres hurled the crude bomb. The bomb blasted smashing the front glass of his vehicle.

Law Minister Anisul Huq said that he would take necessary steps to bring the fugitive killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman back to the country so that they face the further process of trial.

US Department of State said that despite disappointment of the January 5 general election, the US will continue to work with the Government of Sheikh Hasina.

BNP-led 18-party alliance is planning a fresh spell of anti-Government campaigns for the sake of its political existence and to mount a pressure on the Government for immediate negotiations that will lead to a free, fair, inclusive, and peaceful election.

 

In Chapainawabganj District, an AL activist was seriously injured as JeI-ICS cadres exploded bombs in Shibtala area of the District town. The injured AL activist is identified as Mainul Islam.

January 14

A cadre of JeI was killed during a gunfight with Joint Forces in Debhata sub-District of Satkhira District. The deceased is identified as Anwarul Islam (30). Four Policemen were injured during the gun battle. The law enforcers also recovered a pipe gun, six cartridges, two handmade bombs and two sharp weapons from the area.

In Laxmipur District, Police arrested 14 activists of BNP and JeI from different places of the District wanted in several cases.

In Rangpur District, Police arrested 11 BNP and JeI-ICS cadres from different areas. Police arrested them as they gathered in the Kotwali Police Station area and tried to put up barricade on the rail line.

In Joypurhat District, Police arrested 10 activists of BNP and its ally JeI. Police said a team of Police raided different places of the District at night and arrested the 10 on their suspected involvement in violence.

In Jhenidah District, Joint Forces arrested nine JeI-ICS cadres for their alleged subversive activities.

In Satkania District, nine JeI-ICS cadres were arrested in Kanchhana, Chhadaha, Karoinagar, Afjalnagar and Bazalia areas. Police said all the arrestees are accused in different cases filed over subversive activities.

In Sitakunda District, Police arrested six JeI-ICS cadres during raids in Madyam Mohadevpur, Barabkunda, Banshbaria, Bakkhali and other areas. A locally made gun and two crude bombs were recovered from one of the arrestees.

January 15

Bachchu Pradhan (50), who suffered burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack in Chandpur District on January 6, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka city.   Bachchu was injured in an attack by BNP-led opposition men demanding cancellation of the poll results.

In Satkhira District, Joint Forces arrested 11 activists of BNP and its ally JeI. They were arrested on charges of involvement in post-election violence, tree felling, vandalism and subversive activities during the recent blockade programmes of the 18-party opposition alliance in the District.

AL urged BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to sever ties with the JeI if her party wanted a meaningful dialogue with the Government.

BNP leader Khaleda Zia claimed the country had been ‘robbed of democracy’ and said it must be restored through a peaceful movement.

Two local leaders of the AL were injured in an attack by miscreants in the Kalanal area of Khagrachhari District. The injured were identified as Nazir Mahmud and Shrikanta Deb Manik.

Three female cadres of Hizb-ut Tawhid were arrested at Bhandaria sub-District of Pirojpur District. The arrestees were Hasina Begum (35), Tania Akter (21) and Munia Akter (18).

January 16

In Rangpur District, Police arrested 23 activists of BNP and JeI-ICS cadres from different areas for attacking polling centres, setting fire to polling centres, snatching ballot boxes and papers, vandalising and ransacking the Hindu people's houses in the District on January 5 national elections day.

In Jhenidah District, Joint Forces arrested 20 people belonging to BNP and JeI-ICS on various charges including subversive activities.

In Joypurhat District, Police arrested 10 activists of BNP and JeI-ICS in an all-out drive in the District on charges of violence and sabotage.

AL bagged three of the seven parliamentary constituencies where re-polling were held at 390 suspended polling stations amid low turnout. Of the rest four constituencies, JP faction led by HM Ershad got one, BTF one, while two independent candidates won the election to the rest two seats.

European Parliament passed a resolution calling on the Government and the opposition to find a compromise to give the people of Bangladesh a chance to express their democratic choice in a representative way.

January 17

A leader of BCM was injured as miscreants allegedly hurled two crude bombs at one of the buses carrying Ganajagaran Mancha activists in Bogra District. The Police arrested at least four people in connection with the incident.

In Jaipurhat District, Joint Forces arrested 25 activists BNP and JeI on charge of subversive activities at four sub-Districts.

In Jessore District, the joint forces arrested at least 15 BNP and JeI activists in separate drives in eight sub-Districts accused in different cases connected to violence in recent political programmes.

In Chittagong District, at least 14 people were arrested accused of violence and subversive activities.

In Sylhet District, Police arrested 13 BNP-JeI men in separate drives in Sylhet city. The Police also recovered a pipe gun and two bullets from the possession of three ICS cadres — Fakhrul Islam, Muzahidul Islam and Sadequr Rahman.

In Rangpur District, the Joint Forces arrested at least 12 BNP-JeI activists from eight sub-Districts.

In Comilla District, Police arrested eight BNP-JeI men in separate drives. In Sunamganj District, the Police arrested eight BNP-JeI men at different sub-Districts of the District.

In Satkhira District, the Joint Forces arrested a JeI cadre from Raita sub-District.

In Barisal District, the Police arrested Gournadi sub-District unit joint convener of Juba Dal, the youth wing of BNP in connection with a case of arson attack on a Police box.

BNP refuted the European Parliament resolution that suggested the party should distance away from JeI, saying that there is no evidence of the Islamist party’s link to attacks on minority community in Bangladesh.

January 18

A cadre of ICS was killed during a “gunfight” with the members of Joint Forces in Sadar sub-District of Satkhira District. The victim is identified as Abu Hanif Choton (16).

January 19

55 people, including 22 Policemen, were injured when JeI-ICS cadres ambushed a Police team in the Sundarganj sub-District area of Gaibandha District and clashed with the Joint Forces sent to relieve the Police team.

Law Minister Anisul Huq called upon the countrymen to boycott JeI, its wings and institutions in order to "uproot" the party from Bangladesh forever.

EC announced schedules for elections to 102 sub-District councils, posting the polling day for February 19. Aspiring candidates would need to collect and submit nomination papers by January 25. Returning officers will examine the validity of nomination papers on January 27 and candidates would be able to withdraw their candidatures until February 3. The candidates will be able to begin their electioneering soon after the symbol allotment on February 4.

DB of Police arrested three Pakistanis of Myanmar origin on suspicion of having links with the banned militant outfit TTP. DB arrested Mehmud (26), Osman (23) and Fakhrul Hasan (50) at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka city in possession of a laptop containing manuals for making bombs and using firearms.

January 20

The Assistant Secretary General of JeI Meherpur District unit, Tarique Mohammad Saiful Islam (35), was killed in a "gunfight" with Police. One firearm, five crude bombs and six bullets were recovered from the incident site.

Police found the body of Atiqur Rahman Atique (26), a leader of Tupimari union unit of JCD accused in the AL leader Asaduzzaman Noor's motorcade attack case from Dhalagachh Naria Danga in Nilphamari District on December 14, 2013.

The secretary of Pabna District unit of JeI and the chief of JCD Pabna town unit were arrested in Pabna town of Pabna District on various charges including violence. The arrestees Abu Taleb Mondol and Ariful Islam were later sent to jail.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia would pay for her mistake by not joining the January 5 general elections.

Terming the present Government illegal and isolated, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia demanded a fresh election under a neutral administration as soon as possible.

Miscreants, in separate incidents, stabbed to death an activist of Juba League and a former leader of ICS in Bogra town of Bogra District. The deceased were identified as Abdul Mazid (28) a local leader of Juba League and former ICS leader Abdul Baki (28).

A cadre of ICS who sustained bullet injuries during January 19's clash with Joint Forces in Gaibandha District succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Bogra District. The deceased is identified as Shahinur Rahman Shohag.

Rallies and road blockades marked the dawn-to-dusk hartal enforced in Pabna District by the District JeI-ICS cadres in protest at the arrest of its District unit secretary Abu Taleb Mondal.

The party insiders said that BNP is likely to keep a 'strategic distance' from its major ally JeI in the face of 'pressure' different local and international quarters which castigated the politics of violence.

HRW in its World Report 2014 said that Bangladesh tumbled backward on human rights in 2013 as the Government engaged in a harsh crackdown on members of civil society, the media, and political opposition.

In Chittagong District, Police recovered the body of Muhamad Alamgir (30), an activist of Juba League at Eochia village. Local AL and Jubo League leaders blamed the JeI-ICS cadres for the murder.

In Chapainawabganj District, a gang of miscreants attacked AL activist Nurjahan Begum (45) in Shibganj sub-District. Miscreants cut the tendons in her right hand and left leg.

January 23

BNP-led 18-party alliance and JeI separately enforced dawn-to-dusk hartal in Bogra District. BNP demanding withdrawal of all cases against BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and release of its party leaders. JeI called the hartal to protest the murder of former ICS leader Abdullah Al Baki on January 21.

Pickets vandalized 10 vehicles and torched a truck during daylong hartal called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance in Bogra District.

EC decided to deploy armed forces to maintain law and order during the sub-District parishad elections to be held in phases from February 19. The decision came following a meeting on law and order ahead of the sub-District elections at the EC Secretariat in Dhaka city.

Police arrested eight cadres of banned Islamist outfit HuT in Dhaka city's Khilkhet area. Police recovered around 1,000 leaflets, 25 magazines, four jihadi (holy war) books and eight banners from their possessions.

BNP reacted sharply to the Prime Minister's comments that the BNP Chairperson, Khaleda Zia had now become the Ameer of JeI and said that actually Sheikh Hasina Wajed could now be called the 'Chief of JP' for her ties with them.

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhul Islam Alamgir said JeI is in the 18-party alliance and will be in the future. He also urged country's people to wage a movement to topple the Government.

In Jhenaidah District, Kotchandpur sub-District JeI finance secretary Enamul Haque Biswas was killed. Five Joint Forces personnel had sustained injuries in the gunfights and Police recovered a pistol and several crude bombs.

In Satkhira District, Debhata sub-District unit ICS secretary Abul Kalam and cadre Maruf Hossain were killed. Police recovered two pipe guns, five crude bombs, bullets and machetes.

10 persons were injured during a clash between SUST unit BCL and ICS cadresin Sylhet District. During the clash, activists of the two student organizations hurled brick bats at each other.

BCL activists beat an ICS cadre on Barisal University campus in Barisal District. The victim is Abdul Hye, a third year Mathematics student of the University.

Police arrested two ICS cadres, Abul Hashem and Jamsed Uddin Shakil from Sitakunda sub-District of Chittagong District in cases filed over vandalism and arson attack on highway vehicles.

A leader of JCD identified as Azharul Islam was killed by Joint Forces in a gunfight in Magura Kheyaghat area of Tala sub-District in Satkhira District.

Police arrested 11 cadres of ICS from messes of SUST in Sylhet District following two cases filed over vandalism on the campus.

EC cancelled the nominations of 112 aspirants out of 1,732 during the scrutiny in the first phase elections to 98 sub-Districts slated for February 19.

Almost a year after the killing of blogger Rajib, detectives charged Mufti Jasimuddin Rahmani, chief of militant group ABT, and seven students of North South University.

Police arrested four cadres of ICS while they were making bombs in the Jamil Nagour area of Bogra District. Police also recovered a petrol bomb, two liters of petrol, 200 grams of gunpowder and some other bomb-making materials from the spot.

The 10th Jatiya Sangsad began its maiden session with the party in the opposition sharing power in the Government and major political parties including the BNP and its allies staying outside the house.

Police foiled black flag processions the BNP and its partners in the alliance tried to bring out in protest at the 'illegal' 10th Parliament going into its first session and stopped alliance leaders and activists holding such programmes elsewhere in the country.

BNP termed 'farcical and politically motivated' the verdict on the 2004 arms haul case to eliminate the opposition. BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said those who had seized the arms were implicated in the case and the verdict was given after holding their trial.

A Policeman was injured as villagers attacked him during a raid to arrest a cadre of ICS in the Ghoraghat sub-District of Dinajpur District. ICS cadre Golam Rabbani (30) of Sreeharibihari village was accused of setting ablaze a polling centre in the sub-District.

As per the full text of the verdict of the special tribunal on the Chittagong arms haul cases released, the role of the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in the incident was termed 'mysterious'. Judge S.M. Mojibur Rahman said the then DGFI chief Major General (Retired) Sadiq Hasan Rumi had informed the former Prime Minister about the situation. She did not react but said she was aware of the event.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister, Rashed Khan Menon said BNP-JeI coalition resorted to mass killings and arson in the same manner as it happened during the War of Liberation in 1971.

Chittagong Police pressed charges against HeI nayeb-e-ameer Mufti Izharul Islam Chowdhury, his son Harun Bin Izhar and seven others in a case filed in connection with an explosion at a madrasa in the District on October 7, 2013.

Six persons were injured when activists of BCL and ICS cadres clashed at Khulna Medical College of Khulna District.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed said the soil of Bangladesh would never be allowed to serve as a playground of militancy and terrorism which she claimed occurred rampantly during the last BNP-JeI rule.

Rivals killed outlawed PBSP leader, identified as Shamim Khan alias Picchi Shamim (32) in Shibchar sub-District of the Madaripur District. Police said that Shamim was accused in several cases.

According to the IHS Jane's Global Terrorism & Insurgency Attack Index 2013 posted on the IHS website, ICS was the third most active non-state armed group in the world last year.

Police arrested Maulana Shiabuddin, the ameer of JeI Kamalnagar sub-District unit in Char Lawrence market of Laxmipur District for being involved in destructive activities in different times and accused in many cases.

An audiovisual message purported to be from al-Qaeda 'chief' Ayman al-Zawahiri urged the Muslims in Bangladesh to wage an intifada to confront the "crusader onslaught against Islam", reports The Daily Star. Posted in Jihadology.net, the message alleged thousands of people were being killed in the streets of Bangladesh for protesting the "collusion of the anti-Islam secular Government with a bunch of transgressing secularists". Titled "Bangladesh: A Massacre behind a Wall of Silence", the message was released on January 14, but it surfaced in the media only on February 15.

Bodies of two cadres of JeI-ICS identified as JeI cadre Mirajul Islam Miraj (35) and ICS cadre Hadiuzzaman Hadi (16) were exhumed 42 days after their death in poll violence at Pirgachha sub-District of Rangpur District. The family members of the deceased buried them at their respective family graveyards on January 5 without informing the local Police.

February 16

Bagerhat District Court sentenced four cadres of the outlawed PBCP to death for killing a Policeman, Harun-ur-Rashid on January 27, 2004. The convicts are Shamim Sheikh, Anwar Sheikh, Rony Sardar and Habi Molla. However, they were tried in absentia. District and Sessions Judge SM Solaiman handed down the verdict.

Government started investigating the origin of the message of al-Qaeda 'chief' Ayman al-Zawahiri urging the Muslims in Bangladesh to wage an intifada. Asaduzzaman Kamal Khan, State Minister for Home, said, "We are not seeing it as a threat because people in Bangladesh will not allow terror to take root.

Ganajagaran Mancha activists bring out a procession in Dhaka city's Shahbagh protesting al-Qaeda 'chief' Ayman al-Zawahiri's statement about Bangladesh. The recent statement of al-Zawahiri proves its links with JeI and HeI, therefore the latter two should be banned, said Gonojagoron Mancha 'Spokesperson' Imran H. Sarker.

The RAB arrested Rasel Bin Sattar Khan (21) in Tangail District for spreading online the audiovisual message purportedly from al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri calling upon Muslims in Bangladesh to wage intifada.

Issuing a note of warning, AL Joint General Secretary Mahmubul Alam Hanif said that everyone including BNP leaders and activists will have to face trial for spreading al-Qaeda audio-visual message.

A JeI cadre, identified as Humayun Kabir (22), was injured in a clash with the law enforcers during a raid at Khetpara village in Satkhira District.

In Sirajganj District, Police arrested two leaders of JeI on charges of attacking Police and obstructing them from performing duties and vandalising vehicles.

February 19

The first phase of sub-District polls in 97 sub-Districts in 40 Districts across the country held peacefully. The polling began at 8:00am and continued till 4pm without any break.

BNP-backed candidates fared better than those backed by the AL in the first phase of the sub-District Parishads. The pro-BNP candidates won 40 chairman posts while the AL-supported ones bagged 34. Candidates backed by the JeI won 12 chairman posts, JP one, and rebels and other candidates nine. Result of one sub-District was awaited.

CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said that the EC was successful in holding elections to 97 sub-District Parishads in a free and fair manner. About the voter turnout, he said, "It is not possible to say anything about it just now.

A cadre of the PBSP, identified as Kiran Bepari (29), was killed in an encounter with Police at Bagmara village in Faridpur District.

In Khagrachhari District, AL and BNP-JeI activists clashed leaving 15 people injured.

15 people were injured as cadres of banned militant outfit HT clashed with locals in Purbo Shalbon area of Rangpur city in Rangpur. 23 HT cadres were arrested from the spot.

February 21

In Pabna District, 10 people were injured during a clash between AL and BNP-JeI activists. Five houses and two motorbikes were also vandalized.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed in Dhaka city said that there was no room for terrorism, militancy, money laundering and corruption in Bangladesh.

February 22

Police arrested a regional leader of PBCP-Red Flag, Abu Hanif from Chachkia village of Pabna District. Police said that two cases are pending against him with Bhangura and Atgharia Police Stations in the District.

Police arrested 10 cadres of ICS at Satkania sub-District in Chittagong District for their suspected involvement in attacks on the Police in recent times.

A Police Constable, identified as Atiqul Islam, was killed and two other Policemen were injured as an armed gang of 10-15 unidentified assailants ambushed a prison van that was carrying three convicted JMB militants in Trishal sub-District of Mymensingh District.

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith suspecting JeI's role in the incident said JeI is not a political party and they are a terrorist group.

JMB militant Rakib Hasan Russell was killed in crossfire at Mirzapur sub-District of Tangail District. One shotgun, one bullet and three bullet shells were recovered from the scene.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed asked the Law Ministry to take effective measures to ensure speedy disposal of cases relating to militancy.

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club in Dhaka city slammed the BNP for forming an alliance with the ICS. The minister also slammed BNP leaders for delivering speeches in favour of militants at many places.

DB of Police arrested a leader of ICS and his associate in Seroil area of Rajshahi city in Rajshahi District on charges of killing Constable Siddhartha Chandra Sarker and attacking law enforcers.

Police arrested Moulana Abdul Hannan, Secretary of JeI of Narendrapur union unit from Sadar sub-District in Jessore District accused in several cases including torching bus, attack on law enforcers, toll collection and bomb blasting.

The second phase of sub-District polls in 115 sub-Districts in 52 Districts across the country held peacefully. A total of 1,340 candidates contested the election against 345 posts in the 115 sub-Districts.

Police arrested JMB militant Sabbir Ahmed (55) in Kaliakoir sub-District of Gazipur District.

In the second phase polls to 115 sub-Districts, the BNP-blessed chairman candidates won in 51 sub-Districts and the AL-backed ones in 44. The candidates backed by the JeI won eight chairman posts while candidates supported by the JP were able to secure only one.

A mobile court in Satkhira District sentenced three JeI members to one year imprisonment each on charge of planning to carry out subversive activities in Kaliganj sub-District. Police said Asaduzzaman Sardar (40), Rafiqul Islam (37) and Mosharaf Hossain (35) were arrested from different areas in the sub-District.

The panel formed by the Home Ministry to investigate the snatching of three convicted JMB militants on February 23 from a prison van in Mymensingh District found Police and the jail authorities responsible for the incident.

A 'regional commander' of outlawed PBCP identified as Abul Kashem was killed in a 'shootout' with Police in Damurhuda sub-District of Chuadanga District. Three Policemen sustained splinter injuries as the PBCP cadres hurled crude bombs targeting Police during the gunfight.

Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu said there will be no negotiation between the Government and BNP until its Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia parts the company of militants.

Police in separate drives arrested 17 cadres of JeI-ICS from different areas in Sitakunda sub-District of Chittagong District on charges of their involvement in vandalism and subversive activities.

Terming Bangladesh's January 5 general election for the Jatiya Sansad free, OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani said OIC would continue to work with the present Government.

In Jhenidah District, Police arrested five persons belonging to JeI-ICS and BNP for their alleged involvement in attack on law enforcers, setting fire on polling centres and other heinous activities during January 5 polls.

Academic activities at SUST in Sylhet District were hampered on the first day of two-day strike enforced on the campus by ICS pressing for cancellation of the expulsion of 14 ICS cadres on February 27.

Eight cadres of ICS were injured as Police opened fire on the second day of their strike at the SUST in Sylhet District. Police also arrested ICS cadre Abid Hasan Rush, a student of the university from the campus.

Liberation War Affairs Minister A K M Mozammel Huq said, "The government is planning of banning the anti-liberation force JeI, but it has no plan to ban other religion-based political parties."

DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in a daylong drive arrested 11 suspected JMB militants from different areas of Mymensingh District. The DB also recovered 4.5 kilograms of explosives.

The third phase of sub-District polls was held at 81 sub-Districts in 41 Districts. Candidates loyal to the AL won the chairman post in 39 sub-Districts while the BNP-endorsed aspirants won 28.

Manzarul Islam of ICS was killed by assailants on the day of sub-District polling in Bagerhat District. Another cadre was also injured in the incident.

At least 30 people, including AL, BNP and JeI activists, were injured in separate sporadic clashes during sub-District polls in Rajshahi District.

SUST unit of ICS in Sylhet District called off its indefinite strike and withdrew the hartal they had called for March 20 for withdrawal of expulsion order of its 14 cadres by SUST authority.

A Dhaka Court indicted former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia, in charge of corruption for allegedly using an illegal fund to buy land for a charity named after her late husband, Ziaur Rahman.

US handed over Nazmul Maksud, accused of attempting to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed on August 11, 1989. Murad was arrested by the US Homeland Security Service from Atlanta on February 2, 2012.

Police arrested Fayez Ahmed Noman (30), an alleged cadre of HuT and recovered some leaflets in his possession in Chittagong city of Chittagong District. The leaflets bore writings urging "conscious" people to jump into "the movement to oust the corrupted and exploiting Government".

Fourth phase of the local Government elections in 91 sub-Districts across 43 Districts were held. A total of 1,186 candidates contested the elections against 273 posts in the 91 sub-Districts. Of them, 389 are chairman candidates, 485 vice chairman contenders and 312 vice chairman candidates for the post set aside for women.

A JeI cadre, identified as Rabiul Islam (48) sustained bullet injuries during a clash between Police and JeI-ICS cadres in Sadar sub-District of Satkhira District. Islam is accused in 10 cases.

A 'regional commander' of PBCP-Janajuddha along with his three associates was arrested from Agdia marshland area in Narail District. The arrestees are identified as Khulna division 'regional commander' Gias (33) and his associates Jahid (28), Sohel (22) and Razu (25).

Abdul Hannan Khan, coordinator of the ICT said that JeI is to stand trial for committing crimes against humanity in 1971. According to Khan, seven charges, including genocide, will be pressed against the party and its affiliates for their role during the Liberation War.

Intelligence sources said that although the Government has succeeded in arresting and trying a significant number of militants over the last seven years, some 270 more wanted in different cases are still at large, posing threats of terror attacks.

The War Crimes investigation agency, which suggested banning JeI and six other organizations that were associated with the party in 1971, handed over its report on JeI to the Prosecution.

The Chittagong HC acquitted four cadres of ICS condemned to death by a Chittagong Court for killing eight persons, including six activists of BCL in Chittagong city in July 2000.

During the closing arguments in the war crimes case against absconding BNP leader MA Zahid Hossain Khokon, ICT-1 prosecutor, Mokhlesur Rahman Badal claimed that he had proved all the charges against Khokon beyond any shadow of doubt. He further said "We are seeking his capital punishment."

At least 20 people, including five Policemen, were injured as JeI-ICS cadres clashed with Police in Natore town of Natore District. Four JeI-ICS cadres were arrested from the spot.

ICS cadres shot and injured an activist of Jubo League at Fulo Fakir Haat in Chittagong District. Jubo League claimed that Kamal Hossain (35) was attacked to create panic ahead of the verdict of war criminal Delawar Hossain Sayedee.

In Rangpur District, Police arrested 22 JeI-ICS cadres on charge of creating violence in the District in different times.

In Dinajpur District, a local JeI cadre was arrested on charge of carrying out subversive activities and deteriorating law and order in Hakimpur sub-District. The arrestee is identified as Zahangir Islam Dhalu (30).

Foreign Minister A.H. Mahmood Ali said Bangladesh have time and again rejected terrorism, extremism, violence and intolerance as a nation. Two persons including a Policeman were injured in a gunfight between Police and JeI-ICS cadres at Moyla Khana Jhumjhumpur in Sadar sub-district of Jessore District. Police also arrested three persons and recovered a shutter gun, one round of bullet and a sharp weapon from their possession.

The tendons of Nahid Shikdar Rubel (24), the organizing secretary of the Chapainawabganj District BCL were cut in front of Government College in Chapainawabganj District. District BCL leaders said that the cadres of ICS launched the attack.

A leader of ICS was killed and seven other cadres were injured during a Police raid at a house in Satkhira town of Satkhira District. The deceased is Aminur Rahman (30), town unit 'president' of ICS. Two firearms and a bullet were recovered from the house. Police in separate drives arrested 19 leaders and cadres of JeI-ICS in Taraganj, Mithapukur and Pirgachha sub-Districts of Rangpur District. Police said they were arrested on charge of creating violence in the District in different times.

Two JeI leaders who were elected chairman and vice-chairman of Sundarganj sub-District in Gaibandha District were arrested in front of Rangpur District Divisional Commissioner's office.

Police arrested a local JeI leader from an abandoned petrol pump in Noymail area of Bogra District. The arrestee is Arshadul Bari Arshad (42), joint secretary of the Bogra unit JeI-backed labors' organization Sramik Kalyan Federation.

A JeI activist, Sirajul Islam was killed in a Police raid at Keortola in Debhata sub-District of Satkhira District. Two Police Constables were also injured in the gunfight.

ICS general secretary of Jessore western division, Ruhul Amin and Abul Kashem, president of Benapole municipality unit, were injured in a gunfight with Police at Shikri village of Jessore District.

Police arrested 20 suspected militants from Bapta Pilot area in Sadar sub-District of Bhola District. Police arrested the members of 'Kalema Dawat' for their suspicious movement in the area.

A local activist of JeI, identified as Faruque Hossain suffered bullet injuries in Police firing in Sushilgati area of Satkhira District. Police said that the JeI activists hurled seven to eight crude bombs at the law enforcers when they reached the area.

Police arrested nine activists of the JeI including the District Secretary during a drive conducted in Sreenagar sub-District of Munshiganj District. The JeI activists hurled two crude bombs at Policemen. Police also recovered 11 crude bombs during the drive.

An activist of JeI, identified as Aktar Hossain Aku (48), was killed in a lynch-mob attack at Deltar Crossing in Debhata sub-District of Satkhira District. Aku was accused in the killing of Raihan, organising secretary of Debhata sub-District unit AL.

Joint forces of Police and BGB in separate drives arrested 22 cadres of Jel-ICS in Chapainawabganj District. The joint forces conducted a drive in Sadar sub-District and arrested 10 Jel-ICS cadres, while the other 12 were arrested in Shibganj sub-District of the District.

Police arrested Rashed Mia (35), a member of Bogra District unit of ICS and former vice-president of Sherpur Degree College unit. Police said that Mia was wanted in the cases for arson attacks and vandalism.

Police arrested 21 leaders and activists of JeI from the party's Chittagong city office in Chittagong District for planning subversive activities. During the raid, Police also recovered 1.5 kilogram of potash, a large bottle containing petrol and 50 empty bottles meant for making petrol bombs from the office.

In Chittagong District, a court sent to jail 21 JeI leaders and activists who were arrested on May 12 with bomb-making materials from the Chittagong city.

In Barisal District, a leader and three activists of JeI were sent to jail in several cases filed for creating violence during blockades.

The prosecution sought the capital punishment for war crimes accused Mobarak Hossain (64) as it believes that it has successfully proved all five charges against him at the ICT-1.

The DB claimed in a charge sheet submitted to a Dhaka court that senior BNP leaders Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Mirza Abbas along with 26 others hurled crude bombs and attempted to kill Police last year (2013). The detectives prayed for bringing BNP Standing Committee member Moudud, acting secretary general Fakhrul and the other accused under trial.

A Dhaka court sentenced absconding JMB militant Jahidul Islam Sumon alias Boma Mizan to 20 years' imprisonment while his wife, Halima Begum was given five years in a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.

A prosecution witness, Abdul Matin Jamal gave deposition against War Crime accused and 'founder' of Qaisar Bahini, SM Qaisar at ICT. Jamal, said he had witnessed the atrocities by Qaisar and his group in Madhabpur and Habiganj towns of Habiganj District during the war.

Police arrested a PBCP-Red Flag faction operative, identified as Mohammad Alam from Kacharipara area of Pabna District. "Alam is accused in 14 cases including nine for murders. He was one of the most wanted criminals in the district", according to Police.

A 'regional commander' of PBCP-ML identified as Abdul Gaffar Par was killed and his associate injured in a shootout with Police in Tala upazila of Satkhira District. The injured, Saiful Islam, 42, was the prime accused in a case filed in connection with the murder of SM Alauddin, editor of the Daily Patradut.

Hamidur Rahman alias Hamidur, 'second-in-command' of Sarbahara Party was killed and two RAB officials were injured in a gunfight between RAB and outlaws in Ishwardi sub-district of Pabna District. One pistol and two bullets were also recovered by RAB team.

Charges were pressed against 52 persons including JeI-ICS cadres and BNP men in a case for attacking law enforcers and vandalising a Police van during BNP-led alliance's hartal in Dinajpur town of Dinajpur District in October, 2013 court sources said. Of the accused, 14 are now in jail while the rest 38 are still at large. The court issued arrest warrants against the absconding accused.

Two prosecution witnesses told the ICT-1 that the Pakistani Army accompanied by War Crimes accused ATM Azharul Islam shot dead their fathers and brother on April 3, 1971 at Dhapengineer Para crematorium of Rangpur's Kotwali Police Station.

An indigenous prosecution witness, Basu Sautal alleged at the ICT-2, that SM Qaisar made the Pakistan Army rape his aunt at a Habiganj Tea garden in Habiganj District in 1971. ICT-2 headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan recorded the deposition of Basu Sautal.

A day after receiving the body of Nayek Mizanur Rahman, BGB warned Myanmar of instant "befitting response" if such incidents of firing and killing take place in future. Police arrested three cadres ICS, the students' wing of JeI. Two local unit ICS activists were arrested from Lohagara sub-District and one from Satkaina sub-District in Chittagong District. The trio were involved in destructive activities, mainly torching, vandalising and attacking minority groups in those areas in the past.

The RAB recovered a large cache of ammunition, including anti-tank rocket shells and chargers of launchers, from a bunker inside the Satchhari National Park in Chunarughat sub-District of Habiganj District. Officials said they recovered 184 rocket shells (40mm) and 153 chargers abandoned in one bunker at the hillock of the reserve forest, some 130km off the capital, during the raid. It is suspected that NLFT had buried the weaponry.

The RAB found two more bunkers at Satchhari National Park in Chunarughat sub-District of Habiganj District. The cache included 38 rocket shells, four machine guns, 95 rocket chargers, 1,300 ammos of machine guns and over 13,000 bullets of different guns.

Police sources revealed that the operatives of outlawed PBCP-Janajuddho and GMF are trying to regroup in Kushtia and Chuadanga Districts. Police conducted drives in different areas of the two Districts on May 29-30 and arrested so far arrested five cadres of the two banned outfits. Of them, three were arrested in Kushtia while the rest in Chuadanga.

In Harinakunda sub-District Jhenidah District, one cadre of PBCP-Janajuddha was killed in a gunfight. The identity of the deceased could not be known immediately. Two constables were injured during the incident. One LG gun, three rounds of bullet and six bombs were also recovered from the scene.

A local leader of ICS was shot and injured by Police at Gazna village in Satkhira District. The victim was identified as Shamsul Alam Bulbul (35), former president of Kolaroa sub-District unit ICS.

Convicted War Criminal and BNP leader, Abdul Alim, passed away while undergoing cancer treatment at the prison cell in Dhaka city. On October 9, 2013, the ICT-2 awarded him death sentence. But he was spared the sentence because of his old age, ill health and physical disability.

Asserting that the Government has the capability to face any challenge, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed at her official residence Gono Bhaban said "I don't see any reason to be afraid of, had I been afraid of such conspiracies I wouldn't have come to politics". Mentioning the report on a conspiracy hatched to topple the Government through unfair means, she said it was the responsibility of the Government to make sure such conspiracy cannot take place and affect the mass people.

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a media call in Dhaka city said "A mass uprising against this illegal Government is imminent". A group of militants killed a local leader of the JCD, the student wing of BNP and ICS, the student wing of JeI, identified as Adil Mahmud Chowdhury (30), in Mirsarai sub-District of Chittagong District. Chowdhury, son of Abu Taher Chowdhury of Shayerkhali area, was the JCD Upazila unit convenor.

BNP's Mirsarai upazila unit called a dawn-to-dusk hartal on October 11, in the sub-District in Chittagong District protesting the killing of Adil Mahmud Chowdhury, a JCD, the student wing of BNP and ICS leader, in the sub-District in Chittagong District on October 9. BNP and pro-BNP organisations staged a rally in the upazila headquarters where they made the announcement.

One person, identified as Nur Nabi (24), a Jubo Dal activist, was killed in an explosion when he along with his associates was making crude bombs at Bathania village in Feni District. Some youths, including Nabi, were making crude bombs in an abandoned room at Bathania village, said ASP, Saiful Haque said.
