Law and Order Situation in North-Eastern States

On July 7, 2009, the Minister of State in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, Mullapally Ramachandran, provided data on the militancy in North-Eastern States in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament). The statement is provided below:

Lok Sabha

The Government is aware of militancy and related incidents of violence in some States in the North East, like Assam, Manipur, Nagaland and Tripura. Data on violent incidents in North Eastern States, State-wise, for the period January to May 2009 and comparative data for the same period during previous two years, are given as under:

Central Government has deployed Central Security Forces to aid the State authorities for carrying out counter insurgency operations and providing security for vulnerable institutions and installations; shared intelligence on continuous basis; gave financial assistance for strengthening of the local Police Force s and Intelligence agencies under the Police Modernizataion Scheme,; and provided assistance for strengthening various aspects of the security apparatus and counter-insurgency operations, by way of reimbursement of Security Related Expenditure. The scheme is being implemented in all States of the region except Mizoram and Sikkim. It has also assisted the States for raising of additional Forces in the form of India Reserve Battalions.

This information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Shri Mullapally Ramachandran, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
