Attacks on Jammu & Kashmir State Assembly

On 1.10.2001 around 13.50 hrs. a Tata Sumo, bearing registration No. JK 01C-1342 forced its entry through a sealed point at the Jehangir crossing towards the Assembly Complex. The terrorists in police uniform, had hijacked the government vehicle from Barbarshah area (about 3 Kms. from the assembly complex). The vehicle went past a barricade, where many security personnel were posted, towards the gate. Three terrorists got down from the vehicle while the fourth blew himself up along with the vehicle carrying explosives. The vehicle exploded with a deafening sound, killing 14 persons on the spot (final count 38 killed and 70 injured) besides smashing a number of vehicles.

The three terrorists moved towards the Assembly Complex firing in all the directions. The terrorists engaged the security forces in a gun battle inside the complex which ended at 8.PM. 2 terrorists and 2 BSF Jawans were killed while 12 personnel of special operations group, the J&K police and CRPF personnel were injured. All the roads leading to the area were sealed immediately after the firing started.

Spokesman of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit who rang up a local news agency, CNS, claimed responsibility for the blast and said the suicide bomber was Wajahat Hussain, a resident of NWFP of Pakistan. He did not divulge the number of other terrorists or their identity. On 2.10.2001 a spokesman of the Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) claimed that they had used 125 Kg. RDX to attack the heavily guarded J&K Legislative Council Complex. He identified the slain terrorists as Saifullah @ Wajahat of Pakistan, Arbi Bhai , Raja Bhai and Ayubi Bhai.
