Salwa Judum activists killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh

 

On April 10, 2006, the Chhattisgarh Government suspended the anti-Maoist Salwa Judum campaign which it had initiated in June 2005 in the Maoist-affected districts of Dantewada, Bastar and Kanker. Since the commencement of Salwa Judum, the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has targeted its activists killing at least 251 of them till May 13, 2011.

Timeline of Incidents

2017

April 3: CPI-Maoist cadres allegedly killed a former Salwa Judum activist in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh. Modiam Somlu (50) was fatally attacked by the Maoists at Loharpara village in the District early this morning, Police said. Somlu, a native of Pundri village, had gone to Loharpara, to fetch 'sulfi' when a group of armed rebels stormed there. The Maoists pumped bullets into him and also stabbed him with sharp-edged weapons, he said.

2016

December 4: A group of CPI-Maoist cadres allegedly killed a 55-year-old man after accusing him of being a member of the erstwhile Salwa Judum in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh. "Budhram Mudma was killed this afternoon with sharp-edged weapons and sticks at his village Mandem under Farsegarh police station limits," a senior Police official said. Mudma's younger brother is the sarpanch of the village. A group of eight to ten Maoists attacked him when he and his family members were working in their vegetable garden outside the house. Later the Maoists fled into the forest. SFs were rushed to the spot and Mudma's body was brought to Farsegarh for autopsy, the official said. Maoist pamphlets recovered from the spot claimed that Mudma was killed because he was involved with Salwa Judum in the past and was responsible for the deaths of innocent tribals in the area. The pamphlets also accused him of being a 'Police informer', the official added. Salwa Judum was disbanded in 2011 after Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional.

2015

September 5: Auxiliary Constable of Chhattisgarh Police, identified as Pila Das, who was abducted by the CPI-Maoist cadres on August 31, was found dead in Sukma District. Das had joined the ant-Maoist militia Salwa Judum as a Special Police Officer in 2006 and was active in anti-Maoist operations in Bastar.

August 25: A 45-year-old man, identified as Pidu Korsa, who was an active member of the Salwa Judum was killed by CPI-Maoist cadres at the Nayapara relief camp in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh. Villagers said that a group of armed Maoists stormed the Nayapara relief camp and pumped bullets into Korsa, killing him on the spot.

2014

April 28: CPI-Maoist cadres killed a person, identified as Sariyam Podiya, (25), at Palamdagu village under Polampalli Police Station area in Sukma District.

January 28: A former Salwa Judum leader, identified as Bodhiram Machhi (55), was killed by Maoists in Bijapur District, Chhattisgarh.

January 2: Assistant Constable Rup Singh Thakur (35) was allegedly abducted and killed by CPI-Maoist cadres in Matda village of Bijapur District.

2013

August 9: CPI-Maoist cadres killed Uike Bodaru (47), the Sarpanch of Kunded village under Jagargunda Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh. Police said Bodaru was a former member of Salwa Judum (an anti-Maoist vigilante group).

June 25: Salwa Judum leader Mahendra Karma was killed in a CPI-Maoist attack in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh.

May 29: Maoists killed a Salwa Judum activist, identified as M Mukka, near Asirguda in Sukma District. Police said Mukka, a former deputy sarpanch of Errabore, was an active member of Salwa Judum between 2005 and 2008.

May 25: Salwa Judum leader Mahendra Karma was killed in a CPI-Maoist attack in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh.

2012

March 19: The CPI-Maoist cadres opened indiscriminate fire in Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh, killing Lachhuram Kashyap, a prominent Salwa Judum leader of Mirtur. The killing took place in the District when Kashyap was returning to his village from a Police Station.

2011

February 2: The cadres of the CPI-Maoist shot dead Nohar Singh, a Salwa Judum leader, in a forested stretch near Toanar village in Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh. Singh was also linked with the State's ruling BJP, D P Rajbhanu, ASP, said.

2010

November 21: Nandu Karma, a key leader of the Salwa Judum was killed by the cadres of the CPI-Maoist in a forested area of Bhairamgarh locality in Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh. Nandu was the closest ally of former Member of Parliament Mahendra Karma, the key man behind Salwa Judum, which was launched in 2005 and grew under Government patronage.

July 22: The cadres of CPI-Maoist shot dead Raghu Singh (55), a prominent leader of Salwa Judum (anti-Maoist vigilante group), in Bhopalpatnam area of Bijapur District. Raghu Singh was leading the Salwa Judum movement in the Bhopalpatnam area. He was a close aide of Mahendra Karma, the man credited for launch of the Salwa Judum movement in June 2005. He had a few weeks ago sought police protection, saying he feared for his life. However, Bijapur Superintendent of Police Avinash Mohanty denied knowledge of Singh seeking Police cover.

May 2: CPI-Maoist cadres killed Rajkumar Nayak, an activist of the 'Salwa Judum', (anti-Maoist vigilante group), under Mirtur Police station in Bijapur District.

January 19: 13 CPI-Maoist cadres and one Salwa Judum (anti-Maoist vigilante group) activist were killed in a firing between Maoists and the Police in the dense Pareshgadh forest area, near Andhra Pradesh border, of Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh.

2009

July 1: Cadres of the CPI-Maoist killed Pando Bhima, an activist of the Salwa Judum (anti-Maoist vigilante group), in Dantewada District. Pando Bhima, who lived at a relief camp in Dornapal village, was killed while he was going to his village in the forest interiors, some 4 kilometres away from the camp, Police said.

June 28: Cadres of the CPI-Maoist killed a Salwa Judum (an anti-Maoist vigilante group) activist, identified as Somulu, when he was on his way home from a CRPF camp near Pinkoda village in Bijapur District.

April 3: Three motorcycle-borne CPI-Maoist cadres shot dead a Salwa Judum activist, Chhannu Karma, outside Dantewada town. He was the nephew of senior Congress party leader Mahendra Karma, who launched the Salwa Judum movement. Chhannu was attacked when he was on his way to the town riding a motorcycle.

2008

June 30: Suspected CPI-Maoist cadres killed three activists of the Salwa Judum in the Bijapur district. The killed included two elected Panchayat members. The dead bodies were recovered near a village on the Amapalli-Ilmchi road. The three killed men had left for district headquarter Jagdalpur three days ago and but had not reached the destination.

June 19: Three SPOs were killed by CPI-Maoist in Banda police station limits of Dantewada district. The SPOs were abducted by the Maoists along with five other civilian police following an encounter in the forests, seven kilometers away from Konta town on June 18. The SPOs were taken to a Maoist camp in the forests blind-folded where they were asked to distance themselves from the Salwa Judum and the police. Five of them were then let off and three others – Gopal, Bhadru and Lakshmaiah, were shot dead and their bodies abandoned near Banda village.

April 20: CPI-Maoist cadres killed two Salwa Judum members in the Gayatapara village of Bijapur district. Ankit Garg, District Superintendent of Police (Bijapur), said that both the victims, settlers of the Gangloor relief camp, had gone back to their village for personal work when they were attacked by a group of 20 armed Maoists.

March 20: Three Salwa Judum activists were killed by the CPI-Maoist cadres in a forested stretch in southern Chhattisgarh. Maoists reportedly abducted the deceased from a relief camp at Mathwara village in the Bijapur district on March 17 and three days later killed them by slitting their throats.

2007

November 19: A prominent Salwa Judum leader, Budhram Rana, and his son were killed after being chased by about 500 cadres of the CPI-Maoist at Musalur village in the Bijapur district. The Maoists raided the Musalur village to attack a contractor. Rana was one of the founder members of Salwa Judum and was a close associate of the Leader of Opposition, Mahendra Karma, who spearheads the movement.

September 14: CPI-Maoist cadres killed a Salwa Judum activist, Gangaram of Batawada government relief camp under Bhairamgarh police station area in the Bijapur district, while he was returning to the camp.

September 11: Cadres of the CPI-Maoist abducted three Salwa Judum activists from Gangaloor police station area of Bijapur district and subsequently killed one of them, identified as Hemla Budhru. The three persons from Gangaloor relief camp were grazing cattle when about 12 Maoists came and abducted them. The whereabouts of the two others is not ascertained.

September 10: Two Salwa Judum activists, Vacham Budaru and Vacham Kariya, were 'interrogated' and killed by around 50-60 cadres of the CPI-Maoist at Punedhvaya village in the Bijapur district.

September 9: A Salwa Judum activist, Somlu Muriya was killed by Maoists at Parkel village under Mirtur police station limits in the Bijapur district.

September 8: A Salwa Judum activist, Agan Palli, was killed by cadres of the CPI-Maoist at Dhanora village in the Bijapur district.

September 7: Around 500 armed CPI-Maoist cadres' raided Adwara village in the Bhairamgarh block of Bijapur district and axed to death three tribal men. Maoists killed the civilians for their alleged link with the Salwa Judum.

September 2: A Salwa Judum activist, identified as Chaituram, and his relative, Mudyami Jhadi, were killed by a group of at least 60 cadres of the CPI-Maoist at Bhusaram village under Bhairamgarh police station area of Bijapur district.

August 26: Cadres of the CPI-Maoist attacked a government relief camp at Patarpara village near Bhairamgarh in the Dantewada district and killed four Salwa Judum. "Four Salwa Judum cadres were killed and seven were injured in a rebel attack at Patapara village near Bhairamgarh," Rahul Sharma, Dantewada district Superintendent of Police, told IANS. Around 20 Salwa Judum activists, including four women, were injured in the attack conducted by more than 400 Maoists. Some others were reportedly missing from the relief camp till last reports came in. Maoists also destroyed the houses and looted food grains.

July 27: July 27: A Salwa Judum activist, identified as Hemla Aayatu, was killed by cadres of the CPI-Maoist at Dodapara village in the Bijapur district.

July 25: One Salwa Judum activist, identified as Potami, was killed by the Maoists at Tungali village under Jangla police station area of Bijapur district.

July 8: A Salwa Judum activist, identified as Sirha Madkami Hunga, was killed by CPI-Maoist cadres in the Sukma block of Dantewada district.

July 5: Dead body of a Salwa Judum activist, Poyami Raju, was found in the Bijapur district. Raju was earlier abducted by the CPI-Maoist cadres on July 4 from the Bade Kumali village.

June 24: Two Salwa Judum activists, identified as Lambaram Sodhi and Chandreyya, were killed by CPI-Maoist cadres at Surekheda and Motalapalli villages respectively in the Dantewada district.

June 22: A Salwa Judum activist, Srinivas, was shot dead by CPI-Maoist cadres at a weekly tribal market at Edugurallapalli in the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh.

May 22: A member of the Salwa Judum movement was killed and six others sustained injures in a CPI-Maoist-triggered landmine explosion along the Jargunda-Arangpur road in the Dantewada district. According to police, the incident occurred when 250 Salva Judum members were on their way to Arungpur from Jargunda to purchase food grains.

April 10: Three senior activists of the Salwa Judum movement were reportedly abducted last week and then killed by the CPI-Maoist in the Dantewada district. The victims' bodies were recovered from a remote forested part of the Dantewada district.

February 14: CPI-Maoist cadres killed three Salwa Judum activists in the Bijapur area.

2006

January 9: A villager is killed and another sustained injuries when a bomb, hidden in a transistor by the Maoists, exploded at Bhairamgarh in the Dantewada district.

January 20: A former Sarpanch (village headman) is beaten to death by CPI-Maoist cadres at Mohli village in the Surguja district.

January 30: Eight civilians and three CPI-Maoist cadres are killed during a Maoist attack on a Government camp in the Dantewada district.

February 9: CPI-Maoist cadres kill at least three people in the Cherakdodi village of Dantewada district.

February 12: CPI-Maoist cadres attack the Cherli village in Dantewada district and shot dead three tribals.

February 20: CPI-Maoist cadres killed two tribal villagers at Thothapara village in the Dantewada district.

February 26: Two people are killed and 25 others sustain injuries when cadres of the CPI-Maoist raid a government-run relief camp in the Dantewada district.

February 27: An anti-Maoist Jan Jagaran Abhiyan leader, Mohan Mandavi, was shot dead by the Maoists at Tular village in Dantewada district.

February 28: At least 25 tribals are killed and 40 others sustained injuries in a landmine blast triggered by the CPI-Maoist cadres near Eklagoda village, in the jurisdiction of Arabore police station of Dantewada district.

March 4: Police recovered the mutilated body of an anti-Maoist tribal leader, Markam Shanku, from Inzaram area in the Dantewada district.

March 6: Cadres of the CPI-Maoist raided Basaguda village in the Dantewada district targeting the activists of Salva Judum and killed six of them.

March 8: Maoists killed four civilians and injured an unspecified number of them at Diwarpali village under Dornapal police station in the Dantewada district.

March 12: CPI-Maoist cadres killed two villagers at Chikaguda village in the Dantewada district after alleging that they were supporting the Salva Judum campaign.

March 15: CPI-Maoist cadres killed two tribal villagers in the Dantewada district.

March 16: Suspected cadres of the CPI-Maoist killed two tribals in the Bijapur area of Dantewada district.

March 24: Maoists killed two tribals by slitting their throats in the Chhote Dongar village of Dantewada district.

March 24: Police recovered bodies of two local Salwa Judum leaders from Bijapur locality of Dantewada district.

March 25: 11 persons are killed and four others sustained injuries in a landmine blast triggered by the CPI-Maoist cadres in Kanker district.

March 30: A tribal participating in the anti-Maoist Salwa Judum programme was shot dead in the Geedam locality of Dantewada district.

April 7: Three Salwa Judum tribals were killed by the Maoists in Dantewada district

April 9: Three Salwa Judum tribals were killed by the Maoists in Dantewada district.

April 24: CPI-Maoist cadres killed Kowasi Mangru, a local tribal leader associated with the now suspended Salwa Judum campaign, in a village under the Bhairamgarh police station in the Dantewada district.

April 27: Bullet-ridden bodies of two tribals, among the 52 abducted by the Maoists, were recovered in the Dantewada district.

April 29: Police recovered the bodies of 13 abducted tribals from a forested area under the jurisdiction of the Arabore police station in Dantewada district.

June 17: Maoists killed four tribals working for Salwa Judum in Dantewada district. Maoists dumped the bullet-riddled bodies of three persons in a thickly forested belt under Farsegarh police station. Another dead body was recovered from Usur locality.

June 23: Maoists killed three persons, including a contractor involved in the collection of tendu (tobacco) leaves, in the Basuguda area of Dantewada district. According to police sources, the victims, while traveling on a Jagdalpur-Basuguda bound bus, were identified by the Maoists as supporters of the anti-Maoist movement, Salwa Judum, and later killed.

June 26: A tribal leader of the Congress party, Lalit Markam, was killed by Maoists at Dudhiras village in the Dantewada district. "Markam was killed by ultras on Monday because he supported the anti-Maoist campaign Salwa Judum," said police sources.

July 3: A Congress party leader was shot dead by the CPI-Maoist in Dantewada district. Chhannuram Watti, who had participated in the Salwa Judum movement, was shot dead during a ‘people’s court’ in the Nilabaya area.

July 17: CPI-Maoist cadres killed 33 villagers and injured 70, besides abducting over 20 people from the Erraboru relief camp in Dantewada district.

September 6: CPI-Maoists cadres killed three civilians in the Dantewada district. Police said the Maoists had abducted four people from Basaguda last week and killed three of them by slitting their throat.

September 30: Three villagers, including a former sarpanch (village head) were killed by CPI-Maoist cadres for their involvement in the anti-Maoist Salwa Judum campaign at Bijapur police district of Dantewada district.

October 2: Three villagers were killed when CPI-Maoist cadres triggered landmine blasts near Nakanpal village in the Bijapur police district of Dantewada district.

October 2: CPI-Maoist cadres killed a 45-yr-old person after dragging him out of his house in an unspecified village under Usoor police station area of Dantewada district.

October 27: A middle-aged anti-Maoist Salwa Judum activist was beaten to death by CPI-Maoist cadres in the Bastar region.


2005

June 19: CPI-Maoist cadres kill eight civilians and injure 100 others near Kotrapal village in the Dantewada district.

July 16: Seven villagers and two Maoists are killed when cadres of the CPI-Maoist attack six villages in the Dantewada district. Targeting the villagers, over 250 Maoists attacked the Kutru, Ambeli, Pharsgaon, Uskapatnam, Badekarkeli and Chhotekarkeli villages.

July 19: Maoists kill two civilians in the Bijapur village of Dantewada district. According to official sources, the villagers were killed for taking part in anti-Maoist demonstrations.

July 21: Maoists killed Sarpanch of village Tumla, Lekam Satish and seriously injured his father for leading Salwa Judum campaign in the village.

July 28: Cadres of the CPI-Maoist attack the Karemarka and Muder villages in the Dantewada district and kill seven persons.

August 6: Maoists killed a tribal leader, Akhmu Podami, of village Junwani in Bhairamgarh region.

August 9: Maoists killed two persons related to the Leader of Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly, Mahendra Karma, in the Dantewada district.

August 12: Maoists killed a village Sarpanch, Rajman Uike of village Baghadongari after he was kidnapped along with three others.

August 16: Pandru Dongi of village Jangla under Bijapur police district was abducted by Maoists and later killed. The Maoists accused his son of participating in the Salwa Judum campaign.

September 28: Maoists killed Pandu of village Boradi under Gangalur police station by slitting his throat.

September 29: Maoists killed Mahadev Manjhi after taking him out from his house and injured two others in the incident at Pandiyarapara village, four kilometers away from Bijapur Police Head quarters.

September 30: Maoists killed five civilians in the Bijapur area of Dantewada district. The victims were part of a group of seven civilians who were earlier abducted by the Maoists from the area.

October 22: Maoists shot dead Hafta Mangu, a former Sarpanch, village headman, in village Ghumra under Bijapur police district headquarters. Mangu had reportedly participated in the Salwa Judum campaign.

October 28: Maoists shot dead Jumadi Laxmaiyya, a resident of Cherapal village. The victim had reportedly participated in Salwa Judum.

November 4: Maoists killed one Pujari Budhram in Gogla village under Gangalur police station in Bijapur police district.

November 5: Maoists shot dead a civilian and assaulted three others at Gangaloor village in the Dantewada district. Police said the Maoists killed Pujari Budhram for being involved in the anti-Maoist Salwa Judum campaign.

November 11: Two tribals identified as Samlu of village Padera and Hemla Boudhram of Gangalur under Bijapur police district were killed by the Maoists for participating in Salwa Judum.

December 15: CPI-Maoist cadres killed a village headman, Chintanpalli, in the Dantewada district when he was returning from a weekly market.

Maoists shot dead a civilian in the Bijapur area of Dantewada district.

December 30: A group of nearly 50 CPI-Maoist cadres raided Gorna village in the Dantewada district and killed two villagers for participating in an anti-Maoist campaign.
