January 2

NSCN-K militants opened fire injuring two civilians, Lüsüla (15) and Malüfü (26), in Reguri Village in Phek District.

Three cadres of NSCN - Khole-Kitovi faction have joined the NSCN-K with arms and ammunition, citing 'immature' and 'visionless' political views of its higher-ups and members. The three cadres are identified as Picho Lotha, Zubemo Lotha and Yambo Lotha.

January 3

NSCN-K has written to the MHA to take action against the "Kehoi campers" (GPRN/NSCN- Khole Kitovi) for alleged violation of ceasefire ground rules.

January 4

Central Government is closely monitoring the activities of NSCN-IM which is likely to field some proxy candidates in the coming Manipur Assembly elections as 'General Secretary' Thuingaleng Muivah and senior leader V S Atem of the group held a prolonged meeting with Naga Hoho and at least six MLA of the Nagaland People's Front in Dimapur.

January 5

Naga Hoho (Apex body of Nagas in Nagaland) asked NSCN-K to revoke the notice against Sumi Hoho (Apex body of Sumi Tribe) 'vice president' Kitoho Rothoka.

NSCN-K urged the Civil Society members not interfere with the internal functioning of the organization. In a statement issued by the outfit it stated "The internal matters of NSCN-K should be left uninterrupted so long the opinions and views of the people concerned are not sought or in other words the civil societies are asked to do a thorough background check of any issue, acquire basic content and context of the nature of the issue".

January 6

Militant groups operating in the Northeast have realised that violence will never pay and the only way to solve their problems is peace negotiations, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram said peace agreements have been signed by the Government with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha in West Bengal, UPDS in Assam and again it was on the verge of concluding another agreement with at least two groups in Assam.

He said most of the Northeast was today conflict-free and there was no violence in most parts of Northeast as 2011 witnessed a new low in the level of violence where in all states together there were only 627 incidents in which 70 civilians and 32 Security Force personnel were killed.

The Home Minister, however, said there were still some areas of concern that include extortion and occasional kidnapping for extortion.

Sumi Hoho (apex body of the Sumi tribe) 'Vice-President' Kitoho Rotokha resigned from his post. NSCN-K had recently asked 'vice-president' of Sumi Hoho, Kitoho Rotokha to resign immediately or face "dire consequences", alleging that Kitoho was siding with the Khole-Kitovi faction of NSCN.

January 7

ZUF released an NSCN-IM cadre, 'sergeant major' Meikiurou Kamei alias Charlis (40), who was caught by the ZUF cadres from Awangkhun in Tamenglong District on January 1.

January 8

State Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio denied MHA's recent accusation that the Government [NPF led] allowed a meeting of its legislators and top NSCN I-M leaders to discuss candidates for Manipur Assembly elections.

Naga women bodies including Naga Women Hoho, Dimapur (NWHD), Sumi Totimi Hoho (STH) Nagaland and Western Sumi Totomi Hoho (WSTH) Dimapur, expressing "unhappiness towards the false allegation" against Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur Husheli Sema by NSCN-K, appealed the group to "desist" from such accusations. NSCN-K had recently accused the DC of 'fund diversion.

Three Civilians were injured and a house was set ablaze during a clash between NSCN-IM and NSCN-K at Chasa village in Tirap District. The clashes have now stopped after arrival of Security Forces in the area.

January 10

NSCN Khole-Kitovi on the issue of 'Frontier Nagaland State' warned ENPO with exemplary punishment if the organisation (ENPO) did not stop its "evil designs". ENPO is agitating for the creation of a separate state of Frontier Nagaland comprising Mon, Kiphire, Longleng and Tuensang Districts and has refused to cooperate with NSCN Khole-Kitovi.

January 14

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram denied permission to NSCN-IM to travel to Zunheboto District, the hometown of their Chairman Isaac Chishi Swu, under their own security. As the Ministry wants them to visit under Government security citing risk to lives of their leaders from rival groups, the issue saw some heated exchanges between the NSCN-IM and Government representatives in Nagaland.

NSCN-IM and NSCN-K resorted to firing at the Mudoi-Morong area Gelekey, near Assam-Nagaland border with regard to collection of fund from the labourers. No casualties however, were reported.

NSCN-IM "kilo ministry" has reportedly issued orders to all its regional authorities-- central administrative officers (CAOs) --across "Nagalim" to observe 12-hour bandh (general shutdown strike) (from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) on January 17 to show what they described resentment against the Government of India's imposition that prevented collective leadership from visiting Zunheboto .

NSCN-IM 'general secretary' Thuingaleng Muivah has alleged that the Centre was trying to keep out the Naga people from the peace process by preventing the outfit from interacting with their people. The NSCN-IM accused New Delhi of violating the ceasefire ground rules.

January 15

Security Forces arrested five top cadres of NSCN-K from Athibung area in Peren District of Nagaland. SFs recovered sophisticated arms and ammunition from them. The four cadres are still in the custody of Assam Rifles. Another NSCN-K cadre, identified as Isak Sumi, was also arrested along with the other four but was later released as he had an identity card issued by the Centre.

NSCN-Khaplang overran the designated camp of the rival group, NSCN-Khole-Kitovi at Athibung town in Peren District killing a cadre of NSCN-Khole Kitovi during the attack. Athibung has remained a stronghold of the undivided NSCN-K till it split in June, 2011. Later over 70 heavily armed cadres of the NSCN-Khole-Kitovi surrounded the camp of the rival group at Athibung town in the District.

January 16

During the annual Home Secretary-level meet between India and Myanmar at Naypyitaw which is to take place on January 19, a joint strategy to deal with Northeast Indian militant groups, smuggling of drugs, arms and ammunition will be high on the agenda.

NSCN-K member in the Cease Fire Supervisory Board, Wangtin Naga, termed the attack on the Athibung designated camp at Peren District by NSCN-Khole-Kitovi faction as a violation of cease fire ground rules.

January 17

Nagaland saw a peaceful and near total shutdown of shops and business establishments following the 12-hour shut down call by NSCN-IM across "Nagalim" (Naga inhabited areas) in protest against the 'conditions' imposed on the visit of Isak and Muivah, planned for January 13-15 to Zunheboto District.

January 18

The NSCN-IM said that the ongoing peace process has been severely affected by the recent developments imposing 'conditions' on the visit of the collective leadership of the NSCN-IM to Nagaland by the Centre. Convener of the steering committee of the NSCN-IM, 'General' (Retd) V S Atem slammed the Centre's directive imposing 'conditions' on the collective leadership's visit to Zunheboto District and termed it an "unjustified imposition".

NSCN-K has reiterated its stance that it would not be involved in the "Indian election" process under any circumstances stating that it had nothing to do with "Naga national politics.

January 19

A senior functionary of the NSCN-K, identified as Ghukato Assumi, was killed by the rival NSCN-Khole-Kitovi faction in a factional clash at Zunheboto District. He was the deputy kilonser (minister) of the NSCN-Khaplang who had worked with Khaplang for over two decades.

A cadre of the NSCN-K, identified as 'second lieutenant' Athui Rongmai, was killed in the Athibung designated camp in a factional clash in Peren District by NSCN-Khole-Kitovi faction.

During the Home Secretary level meeting between the two countries Myanmar has assured India that steps would be taken against the Northeastern militants using its territory.

Myanmar has sought India's help for implementation of several road projects, which would facilitate free movement of the troops to the areas where the militants are taking shelter. Myanmar has also sought India's help in completing the trilateral highway linking India, Myanmar and Thailand.

January 20

Reacting to the recent spate of factional violence that have created "public disillusionment", FNR urged "those involved" in the confrontation to address the "pressing issues and circumstances" that have precipitated it.

Though during their pre-Christmas meeting with Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in New Delhi, NSCN-IM 'chairman' Isak Chisi Swu and 'general secretary' Thuingaleng Muivah had expressed the hope that the six decade old Naga issue would be resolved, recent developments have raised question about the fate of talks, reports The Sentinel. According to reports, the NSCN-IM leaders are virtually under house arrest at the direction of the Centre.

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi said that it would not 'interfere' in the forthcoming Manipur assembly elections.

January 21

In another skirmish in of factional feud between NSCN-K and NSCN-Khole-kitovi in Kohima District, an NSCN-K 'commander' and his son were injured.

A senior NSCN-IM member Anthony Shimray, who was arrested by NIA at Kathmandu Airport, Nepal in 2010, and currently lodged at Tihar central jail, New Delhi, has conveyed that he would begin "hunger strike" by the last week of January to protest against the NIA and the Government of India's policy to detain him longer in prison.

January 22

Nagaland continues to be tense with the factional feud between NSCN-K and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi intensifying during the past few days. In a renewed spate of violence, the two rival NSCN groups clashed at Zunheboto District injuring one cadre of the Khole-Kitovi faction.

Bhutan 'Prime Minister' Jigme Y Thinley said that there is no camp of any militant formation of the northeast in his country. He further asserted that Security Forces are on alert to thwart any such potential attempts by the militants.

January 23

NSCN-IM has called for a 36-hours total shutdown starting from 6 AM January 25 to 6 PM January 26, in all Naga inhabited areas. The shutdown would cover "all Naga inhabited areas and vehicular movement restricted". It would affect all public institutions including educational and commercial establishments except media houses, hospitals and pharmacies. It has requested the public "to extent full cooperation". NSCN-IM in a statement stated, due to "deliberate violation of ceasefire ground rules by government of India, violation of human rights by disallowing the collective leadership from visiting Zunheboto, deployment of security forces around designated Hebron camp without any provocation and placing unacceptable terms and conditions for the collective leadership to accept" has compelled the NSCN-IM to impose the shutdown.

Jailed NSCN-IM leader Anthony Shimray who was arrested in 2010 from Nepal has threatened to begin a hunger strike at Tihar Jail, seeking his "unconditional release as he is also a member of peace talks". In a letter dated January 18, the NSCN-IM leader said the hunger strike is also for removal of every hindrance blocking peace. "Since the Indo-Naga peace talks is not under law/court of India, any member of NSCN involved in peace talks must not stand trial," he argued and asked the NIA to withdraw cases framed against him.

January 24

State Government cautioned the MHA, Government of India and expressed apprehension that the setting up of a designated camp of AANLA militants along the Assam-Nagaland might affect peace in the disputed border areas. Earlier, on January 22 the newspaper has reported that All AANLA has already started a training camp in the foothill between Chandalashung 'B' and New Chandalashung in Ralan area under Wokha District along the interstate border. The report further states that the training started during the month of October 2011 and it was estimated that the number of CPI-Maoist trainees in the camp was around 300.

January 27

NSCN-K had asked Khole-Kitovi faction of NSCN-Khole Kitovi to "immediately re-deposit", more than 50 stolen .303 rifles from "GHQ Armor" [General Head Quarters] back to GHQ within 30 days. Further, NSCN-K has threatened action against both NSCN-Khole Kitovi and their family members.

January 30

SFs dismantled a suspected CPI-Maoist training camp run by AANLA at Jandalashung 'B' in Ralan area of Wokha District. Although no sophisticated arms were recovered from the site, around 200 dummy training wooden guns and weapons used by the AANLA cadres were found.

ZBN, apex body of the Zeliangrong Naga tribe, fervently appealed NSCN-K and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi to maintain "maximum restraint" in the wake of recent "factional hostility". ZBN has also urged CFMG to clarify "which party should occupy the contested Athibung designated camp" in Peren District so as to clear all doubts surrounding the issue. In a statement ZBN 'general secretary', Azeu Namcyn Hau stated that the need of the hour was finding and working towards "a common political cause to remain united" and asserted that Nagas should not allow themselves to be further weakened by "internal factional strife".

SFs arrested three persons, including two women, along with arms at Duncan Basti area of Dimapur District. The arrestees have been identified as Imtiyanger, Lanutola and Mharhoni Kithan. Police said that the arms were meant for sale to GNLA cadres, a Meghalaya based militant outfit.

January 31

Cadres of the NSCN-K and NSCN - Khole-Kitovi exchanged gunfire for 10-15 minutes at Ghukiye village near Zunheboto town. No injury or casualty was reported.

One NSCN - Khole-Kitovi cadre, identified as one 'sergeant major' S. Sangtam, was arrested by Assam Rifles personnel from Old Minister Hill area of Kohima. One .9mm pistol along with 20 live rounds was recovered from his possession.

NSCN-IM celebrated its "32nd Raising Day" at Hebron area of Dimapur designated camp with chairman Isak Chishi Swu unfurling "Naga national flag."

AANLA 'Publicity Secretary' Etwa Urang admitted the presence of around 60 AANLA militants residing in the camp at Ralan area along the disputed Assam-Nagaland border. He clarified that the AANLA cadres were staying there temporarily until the State Government allotted a designated camp for them. The camp was dismantled by SFs on January 30.

February 3

Refuting strongly to NIA that termed it as "terrorist", the NSCN-IM said such allegation was "a calculated act" to sabotage the ongoing "Indo-Naga political talks" that was entering 15 years now.

February 5

In the continuing factional clash, two NSCN-Khole-Kitovi cadres, identified as one 'sergeant major' Thangboi and 'corporal' Jackson Kuki, were killed and one injured after NSCN-K cadres attacked a 'mobile camp' of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi on the outskirts of Athibung area in Peren District. M21 rifle and Bolt rifle along with huge cache of ammunition were also recovered from them.

A businessman identified as Rakesh Kumar, who was allegedly abducted by militants on January 19, has been rescued by the Police.

The KSU of Nagaland said the State is not the place for AANLA, an Assam based militant outfit, to take shelter. In a press release KSU president Subenthung Kithan and vice-president N Amos Humtsoe made it clear that they were against setting up of training camps by the militants at Ralan area in Wokha District of Nagaland.

February 6

KIN, the apex body representing the Kuki people in Nagaland, has condemned, the "cold blooded killing" of two NSCN-khole-Kitovi cadres in Athibung of Peren District on February 5. In a statement, the KIN information and publicity 'secretary' Richard Haolai said Inpi was "really disappointed" at such incident at the time when whole Nagaland was crying for peace.

February 7

In a suspected factional clash, two cadres of NSCN-K were killed and another got severely injured near Hotel Kent in Dimapur. While the slain cadres were identified as Wangkei and 'captain' Wanbon, the injured cadre was identified as 'lance corporal' Nyamsai. According to Police, the three NSCN-K cadres were fired upon by unidentified assailants just after they checked out of the hotel.

Dimapur Police arrested two persons, identified as Smasul Haque and Krishna Dutta, while they were collecting illegal tax from traders at New Market at the behest of "underground elements". A total of INR 163, 640 of the collected amount was recovered from their possession.

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi held a formal reception programme for 51 members of the NNC who had joined its fold. NSCN-Khole-Kitovi 'president' Khole, welcoming the "new comrades", said that although it was the usual norms for revolutionary groups to oppose one another, it should not continue forever. He said it was his dream that Nagas would all merge together under one banner someday.

Assam Rifles arrested six cadres of NSCN-IM during the raid of a house of one 'major' Yimkachang of NSCN-IM at Yimyu Ward, Mokokchung District. Three .22 revolvers and two pistols were seized from them. The arrestees were identified as Aluba Ao, Zulu, Among Imchen, Atiba, Wati Lkr and Imli Nochet.

February 10

A cadre of NSCN-K, identified as 'lieutenant' Tony Kiho, was killed by unidentified assailants near the 6th Mile area of Dimapur District at 6.30 pm. According to Police, the victim was picked up by assailants from some other place and brought near 6th Mile in a gypsy with his hands tied. Tony was shot from a close range. The victim bore several bullet marks on his head and chest.

February 12

NSCN-K said that it would initiate "stern actions" against anybody collecting unauthorized "taxes' in the name of the outfit and asked those who have been doing the same to immediately put an end to the practice.

February 20

SFs arrested four non-locals on charges of illegal possession of a .22 country made pistol and 63 rounds of .22 ammunition at Delux point in Dimapur District. The arrestees are identified as Abul Hussain, Jubayer Ahmed, Najmul Laskar and Zakir Hussain, all from Assam.

SFs arrested one 'captain' of NSCN-IM, identified as Kaphung Koi Muinao, from Sewak Colony of Dimapur along with arms and ammunition, for violation of Cease Fire Ground Rules.

February 22

FNR "implored" all Naga Churches and Church leaders to urge their members to attend the "Naga Reconciliation Meeting" on February 29, at Dimapur.

FNR also made an "urgent plea to the army commanders" of NSCN-K and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi to instruct their cadres to "cease all armed confrontation" with immediate effect.

February 23

In an emergency meeting, NSCN-K resolved to endorse the FNR appeal to "re-strengthen" the reconciliation process and has forwarded the same to S.S Khaplang, 'chairman' and 'president' of the outift, for "final approval". NSCN-K in a said its 'cabinet, while awaiting the "presidential assent" to participate in the meet, has also resolved to restrain its "armed wing/People's Army of Nagaland commanders from launching any offensive campaign". The statement said that the decisions were "necessitated" in order to facilitate a "conducive" atmosphere for the proposed reconciliation meet on February 29.

February 24

One NSCN-K cadre, identified as Gairalung Zeliang of Nagasin village inTamenglong District, was killed in a factional clash with rival NSCN-khole-Kitovi cadres between Bongkolong village and Piellhang village in the District. Wangtin Naga, Supervisor of the NSCN-K CFSB said the incident took place while the NSCN-K cadres were returning back to their respective camp as directed and in response to the appeal of the FNR to NSCN-K and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi to "cease all armed confrontation".

Under the aegis of Naga Peace Facilitation Committee Delhi (NPFCD), a demonstration was held February 24 at Jantar Mantar in the backdrop of the protracted "political dialogue" between Government of India and NSCN-IM going on since August 1, 1997. NPFCD also submitted a two page memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in reiteration of the demands of the Nagas in Delhi for fruitful solution at the earliest.

February 27

Major General (Rtd) N George, chairman of CFMG, after a crucial meeting with NSCN-IM at Chumukedima in Dimapur said that militant groups should look beyond recent incidents and start preparing to implement a solution that "we are expecting will come about in the near future".

February 28

Major General (retd) N. George, who was recently appointed as chairman of CFSB, said Government of India (GoI), has decided against allotting anymore designated camps except the NSCN-K sub-office at Dimapur. George said this while addressing media after a separate meeting with the NSCN-Khole-Kitovi and NSCN-K CFSB at Police Conference hall Chumukedima. George said the CFSB members of both the factions gave a positive response to his appeal to stop factional clashes.

In what could prove a damper to the much hyped 'Naga Reconciliation' convened by the FNR, the NSCN-K will not be attending the 'Naga reconciliation meeting' called by FNR on February 29 at at Agri expo centre, Dimapur.

Suspected NSCN-K militants killed two NSCN-Khole Kitovi militants, identified as Khamhi Konyak and Lemnyu Konyak, at an unspecified place in the State.

NSCN-IM 'General Secretary' Th. Muivah stated that CM Neiphiu Rio had a clear-cut commitment to the issue of integration of Naga inhibited areas. Muivah said that this was proved after CM Rio made visits to Naga inhabited areas of Manipur during the recently concluded Assembly polls.

The FNR organized a Naga reconciliation meeting. The meeting was supported by the signatories of the Covenant of Reconciliation, Naga Concordant, churches, Naga people and its tribal organizations. The meeting attended by over 20,000 people from Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, called upon all Naga groups to end armed confrontations amongst themselves and join "Naga Reconciliation: A Journey of Common Hope".

March 1

Affirming and reiterating its "sincere and firm" commitment to uphold the CoR, as per the commitment made by 'chairman' S.S Khaplang, NSCN-K appreciated FNR's "steadfast pursuit of Naga reconciliation". Stating that S.S. Khaplang, though unable to attend the reconciliation meet on short notice due to health and security concerns, MIP, in a statement, said he has extended sincere "appreciation and acknowledgement for the effort."

March 2

ENPO and Konyak Union (KU) have condemned the killing of two NSCN-Khole-Kitovi cadres by NSCN-Khaplang at Phomching Town under Mon District on February 28.

March 4

One person was 'arrested' by cadres of NNC-NA, identified as Vikaho Achumi while he was collecting "money from a truck in the name of the NNC" in Dimapur. He was reportedly demanding INR 5000 per truck.

March 5

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, expressed happiness at the resolutions adopted at the February 29 'Naga Reconciliation Meeting' called by the FNR. "If we (Nagas) don't show such unity, we do not have a future. As long as you cling to your individualism, 'villagism' and tribalism, we'll not survive," the Chief Minister said. Rio felt that, since Nagas are divided and placed in two countries (India and Myanmar), they should try to hammer out a settlement with India and Myanmar respectively.

March 7

A dead body was recovered near Ruliezou, below Government women polytechnic in Kohima District. Police informed that the victim bore one bullet injury on the forehead and had his hands tied. Police also found an Electoral Roll ID and Driving license from the victim, identified as David Angkang of Ukhrul District, Manipur. The body has been kept at North Police station, Kohima, Police added.

March 8

SFs arrested two militants belonging to NSCN-IM from Signal Basti in Dimapur District. SFs also seized large quantity of "unaccounted arms and ammunition from their possession" which included one AK -56, 25 live rounds AK-56, one 0.22 mm air gun, 24 0.22 mm live round, one M 20, ten M 20 live round, 20 7.62 mm live round, 25 9 mm live round, 18 12 bore cartridge, one Chinese grenade, one telescopic sight, two mobile phones and four register containing collection details. SFs said the operation "once again" brought to limelight the gross violation of CFGR by cadres of various factions in Dimapur town.

Two Jorhat (Assam) bound trucks from Tuensang were reportedly detained by NSCN-K cadres between Meilong and Longsa area, after the drivers of the trucks failed to pay "vehicle tax", a statement issued by Private Truck & Mini Truck Owners' Union Tuensang District (PTMTOUTD) president Beso Chingmak Chang and executive committee chairman Kejong Chang said. The cadres allegedly seized the keys, vehicle documents and four mobile phones belonging to the drivers and handymen, PTMTOUTD said.

March 12

NNC said that after thorough deliberation it welcomed the resolutions adopted on February 29 (in Dimapur) at the Naga Reconciliation Meeting (NRM) under the banner of FNR, especially the 3rd resolution that "made about the NNC this time as rightly stated."

The NSCN-IM, while appreciating the tireless efforts of the FNR towards bringing all the Naga outfits into one fold, said that it cannot accept in toto the resolutions adopted by the FNR during the NRM.

March 14

NSCN-K asked the FNR and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi to give "clear explanation" to Nagas on "repeated back tracking" and also clarify if the "journey of common hope" still stood valid. NSCN-K alleged that five to six "gunmen" of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi attempted on the life of NSCN-K Sumi Region 'vice chairman' Shikato Achumi on March 14 at Zunheboto town.

Stating that implementation of CFGR is a joint responsibility of both the Union Government and NSCN's People's Army, the NSCN-K said the present trend clearly indicates that CFGR has become more or less an arbitrary imposition on People's Army by the Union Government and its agencies.

NSCN-IM issued a directive banning the burning of forests in the State. The outfit said perpetrators would be fined INR 20,000 for it and 50 percent of the total amount extracted as fine would be awarded to the village authority or any individual who reports the matter along with the identity of the perpetrator to the concerned authority.

Pakistan's external intelligence agency ISI has admitted before a three-member bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary to meddling in northeast India. Former ISI chief Asad Durrani made the admission before the bench during a hearing on the ISI's mandate. He also admitted ISI funding the BNP during the 1991 general elections in Bangladesh.

March 15

Three dead bodies suspected to be of NSCN-Khole Kitovi cadres were found few hundred metres away from Chui Village Junction in Mon District.

A day after the NSCN-K accused NSCN-Khole-Kitovi cadres of attempting on the life of its 'vice president' Shikato Achumi at Zunheboto town on March 14, the latter has claimed its cadres had "simply fired shots in the air" to let him (Achumi) know that his threats and harassments must stop. It stated that on March 14, Shikato Achumi, was forcefully demanding money from a shop.

Veteran Nagaland legislator and former CLP leader Chingwang Konyak, announced in the State Assembly that Nagas of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh were not willing to be part of 'greater Nagaland'.

NSCN-Khole-kitovi has termed the killing of its cadres in Mon District by NSCN-K on March 14 as "overall cowardly acts" with an ideology that seemed to "converge with anti-peace and anti-people propaganda".

March 17

A kapur (area administrator) of the NSCN-Khole-kitovi, identified as Kito Sumi, was shot dead by suspected NSCN-K at Naga Hospital at Kohima. A civilian was also injured.

Nagaland Home Minister Imkong L Imchen said a total of 112 persons were killed in factional clashes from 2008 to February 2012. Out of the 112 killed, 88 persons were killed in 2008, two in 2009, three in 2010, eight in 2011 and 11 persons till February 2012. The minister added two civilians had also been killed in the factional clashes.

March 18

CBI has exposed a FICN racket that operates in Northeast with help from militants in Nagaland. The revelation was made after interrogating Malda-based (West Bengal) Barkat Ali who was arrested on March 12 near the Guwahati railway station in Assam when he was about to board a train to Dimapur in Nagaland.

March 19

CM Neiphiu Rio informed the State Assembly that he was not aware of the progress of political talks between the Union Government and the NSCN-IM since the State was not a party to the dialogue between the two.

Nagaland has spent INR 20,84,05,854 for procurement of arms and INR 9,51,03,526 for ammunitions during 2008-09 to 2011-12 while an amount of INR 2,42,58,713 sanctioned during 2008-09 was yet to spent as allotment was awaited from MHA. The arms and ammunitions were received through the allotment from MHA as per demand made by the department.

March 20

Konyak Union, at a meeting, unanimously resolved to declare non-cooperation to NSCN-K. KU will also observe "Black Day" on March 30 within Mon District to mark those Konyak tribesman killed in the recent factional clashes in Mon. ENPO, a organization which is advocating for a separate State of Frontier Nagaland, had also recently resolved to declare "non-cooperation against NSCN-K. Frontier Nagaland will comprise of four border Districts inhabited by six Naga tribes.

March 21

NSCN-IM Chairman Isak Chishi Swu while addressing the 33rd republic day celebration of the NSCN-IM at the Council headquarters, Hebron said that both the NSCN -IM and the government of India which have been in negotiation for the past 15 years at the highest level, were determined to work out an acceptable solution based on the "unique history" and "situation" of the Nagas and an "interdependent relationship".

NSCN-K 'military supervisor' "Lieutenant General" Niki Sumi on 32nd Republic Day at Suruhuto designated camp said, "Today Naga society is overflowing with tribalism, groupism and now factionalism and this has stalled the Nagas from standing for our own political right."

March 22

FGN celebrating 57th Republic Day at Chümoukedi village said it remained a silent observer thus far awaiting for the "suitable opportunity." FGN also called upon GOI to be responsible and to find a peaceful solution to the Naga issue.

March 23

SFs recovered 160 detonators, 45 gelatin sticks and 10 meters fuse wire used in improvised explosive devices including time devices from a bus bound for Mokokchung from Dimapur District.

Police also recovered connecting devices used in ignition of explosives from another bus bound for Wokha District terminating at Dimapur, from Khakti township in Assam-Nagaland border hours after the first recovery.

March 24

The North East militant outfits have changed their routes to bring in weapons and explosives to the North East region after the improvement of relation between India and Bangladesh.

March 26

A NSCN-K tatar (Core member) was reportedly abducted by some militants, who were travelling in a car, somewhere from Naga Hospital colony Kohima in the afternoon of March 26 and he was found shot dead near a paddy field below Pfuchama village in Kohima District later in the day.

March 27

Three militants reportedly from Nagaland were killed at Koura Basti near Kherbari along Nagaland-Assam border. According to sources, the incident occurred when around nine to 10 militants reportedly went to 'collect tax' from a stone quarry located in that area.

SFs arrested one person, identified as A. Samuel Chophi of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi while "collecting tax" in Purana Bazaar in Dimapur District. Tax collection receipts along with INR 31735 were also seized from him.

March 27-28

NSCN-K and militants of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi have called back their cadres to their other respective designated camps from Ahthibung designated camp in Peren District following instructions from CFSB, a report said. NSCN-K, which was based on Ahthibung designated camp, called back their cadres on March 27 while NSCN-Khole-Kitovi did so on March 28.

March 28

SFs arrested two NSCN-Khole-kitovi cadres, identified as Khekivi Chisi and Bokaho Awomi, in Diphupar in Dimapur District.

Three NSCN-IM cadres, identified as R.S. Tamreiyo, P S Graceson and R Kurakmiu, were arrested in Singrijan area in the District. INR 10,000, four live rounds of .303 and tax collection receipts were recovered from them.

SP of Wokha District clarified that of the three persons killed at Koura Basti near Kherbari along Nagaland-Assam border, one was a civilian. The two militants of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi have been identified as "captain" Mhabemo Yanthan and Chumthungo while the civilian was identified as Thungchamo.

NSCN has expressed regret over the shooting incident near Naga Hospital Authority in Kohima on March 15 and sought pardon from the innocent victim and family.

NSCN-K has condemned the abduction and murder of its tatar (Core Member), Adi Angami, allegedly by NSCN-Khole-Kitovi at Kohima on March 26.

Another factional clash occurred between NSCN-Khole-kitovi and NSCN-K at around 9:15 am in a place between Natha old and Natha new in the outskirts of Zunheboto District.

March 29

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi said it desired to pursue serious consultations with all the apex tribal organisations to "factually analyse the issue confronting the Naga people."

March 30

In continued factional clashes, two militants, one each from NSCN-K, identified as one Tsilise, and another from NSCN-Khole-Kitovi cadre, identified as one Johnson, were killed in Kiphire in the morning. One Athong Pochury of NSCN-K also received minor injury during the clash.

NSCN-K in a statement said that "huge quantities of military gadgets, assorted ammunitions including one M21 Chinese rifle were also recovered".

Huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered by SFs from NSCN-Khole-Kitovi cadres during an operation in Zunheboto District. During the operation, two cadres of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi, identified as 'captain' Xukivi Sumi and 'lance corporal' Kunovi Yeptho, were also arrested.

April 1

The Assam Rifles arrested a suspected arms dealer identified as Obed Kamei (24), a resident of Tamenglong District of Manipur, with a pistol and two magazines at Nui Colony, Burma Camp in Dimapur District. The arrestee along with the recovered item was handed over to East Police Station, Dimapur.

April 2

Naga youth asked the Government to 'rein in' militants who are unleashing terror in the State in the name of Naga nationalism. Fed up with fratricidal killings between the Naga militant groups that have claimed hundreds of innocent lives, besides unabated extortions, abductions and ransom calls by the militants, thousands of peace-loving Naga youths took to the streets of Kohima (District) urging the Government to take steps. The rally, which was organised by the Angami Youth Organisation (AYO), was supported by several other Naga organisations. They submitted a memorandum to home minister Imkong L. Imchen, asking the Government to prevail over those who had defied the voice of the people. It also demanded that all factions/militants strictly adhere to the ceasefire ground rules, and that militants be evicted from civilian areas. Meanwhile, the apex body of the Yimchungru community, YTC, appealed to all the Naga militant factions under Yimchungru region not to move around in "uniform or with arms and other sophisticated weapon" within its jurisdiction so as to create a congenial peaceful atmosphere. It also reminded the factions to strictly adhere to ENPO resolution to cease all forms of hostility, killings, abductions, threat and other unwanted activities in the society.

April 3

The collective leadership of NSCN-IM, Isak Chishi Swu and Thuingaleng Muivah, left Dimapur for New Delhi for another round of talks with the GoI. Before the departure, Muivah said, "We are waiting for a final response from the GoI. Our history is unique and our solution should also be based on the uniqueness of Naga history". The collective leadership also said that the exact dates for the talks have not been fixed yet. Both Swu and Muivah met Home Minister P Chidambaram in December 2011 and discussed with him the peace process to find an amicable solution to the Naga issue.

April 9

NNC appealed to 'warring groups' to stop killing each other "in the name of the nation and God". In a statement, NNC 'chairman' N K Assumi said in the name of the "nation, you have killed own brothers" and "thousands of brave soldiers" have been lost.

April 10

AR claimed to have arrested two "tax collectors", identified as Chisho Sumi and Anandju Sangtam, near Dhansiri Bridge at Burma Camp in Dimapur District at around 5.15pm on April 10 while they were allegedly collecting money from truck drivers.

The Dimapur District Truck Drivers Union (DDTDU) has dismissed the AR claim, saying the two arrested persons were in no way connected to any factions.

April 12

Chang region (Tuensang District) of NNC/FGN has issued termination order to 12 cadres for "misusing power", "misappropriation" and "misbehavior and non- cooperation" with Chang region authorities. NNC/FGN Chang region further informed public that the region would not hold any responsibility if any untoward incident happens to these terminated cadres.

NSCN-IM leadership is believed to have conveyed the State Congress leaders to press the Union Government for expediting the ongoing talks over the long protracted "Indo-Naga political issue."

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi in a statement directed all its "national workers" both civil and military setup to "totally stay away" from interfering in any disputes, issues and problems in internal village level, "among clans, communities etc. in and around Nagaland".

April 13

AR arrested 13 NSCN-IM cadres along with one .9mm Pistol, one .22 Rifle, more than 3000 rounds ammo of various weapons, detonators and large amount of communication and surveillance equipments in an operation at Chumukedima ward No. 1 in Dimapur District.

April 16

NSCN-K is all set to sign a bilateral cease-fire with the Myanmar Government in the later part of April, 2012. NSCN-K sources revealed that top leaders from the outfit have left for its Council Headquarters (CHQ) located in Myanmar where a meeting will be held on April 20 to work out strategies and modalities for setting up ceasefire ground rules with the Myanmar Government.

This development comes in the wake of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi led by "general" Khole and Kitovi Zhimomi, who have all the while alleged S.S Khaplang of being more concerned with politics in Myanmar than in Nagaland.

Asserting that main purpose of the cease-fire between the GoI and the NSCN was to facilitate for a purposeful political dialogue, the NSCN-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) urged GoI and its machineries to respect the cease-fire "whole-heartedly." In a statement, the NSCN-IM "kilonser" (minister) A.Z.Jami said its serious concern was towards a sincere and meaningful political dialogue rather than "interpretations" of the CFGRs.

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi said it has "totally banned" all forms of gambling in public places and weekend market places in both urban and rural areas of Nagaland.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram while addressing Chief Minister's conference on internal security said that in the Northeastern states, nearly all major insurgent groups were in talks with the Centre and was confident that there would further be improvement in the region.

Security Forces arrested four persons for carrying arms. Police around 8pm intercepted one auto rickshaw and on frisking the passengers recovered one country made pistol along with five live rounds. The arrestees were identified as Kevika Sumi, Kito Sumi, Vekugha Sumi and Mughato Sumi.

April 17

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio reiterated the need for an early settlement of the Naga political issue which could pave the way for a faster pace of development. He said the Nagas had gone through so much tough times where "thousands of people killed, raped and molested because of the Naga political struggle."

Conveying appreciation to NSCN-K 'president' S.S. Khaplang for "tireless efforts" rendered for "peace truce" with Myanmar Government to end the decades old conflict to forge out a solution to the Naga political problem in Myanmar, the NSCN-Khole-Kitovi however said it expected that Nagas of Nagaland be left "free of troubles and harassment" in terms of "taxations or whatsoever is our presumption and expectation from our Naga brothers from Myanmar."

April 19

SFs arrested six cadres of NSCN-Khole/Kitovi faction after they busted a camp of the militant group in general area of Nuton Basti in Dimapur. They were arrested along with one AK 56 assault Rifle, 74 live rounds of 7.62mm AK, two live rounds of 7.65 mm, two live rounds of .22 mm, with tax collection receipts and various incriminating documents. The Assam Rifles source then stated that these cadres were in Dimapur town to carry out extortion and coordinate security and movement of 'senior officials' of NSCN-Khole/Kitovi.

Eastern Naga Students' Association (ENSA) welcomed the NSCN-K proposed "bilateral cease-fire" to bring an end to the decades old conflict and work out a solution to the Naga political issue in Myanmar Naga areas through peaceful means.

Security agencies believe tha the CPI-Maoist is making inroads into the North-East to gain access to the arms market in the neighbouring Yunan province of China and not with the aim of expanding their base. "The Maoists are in the north-eastern region for long-term strategic reasons. Militant outfits in the north-east are already procuring arms from the Yunan province, Myanmar and Southeast Asian countries. The source of illegal arms in Yunan province is mainly a Beijing-based arms manufacturing company, Norinco, which has its unit in Yunan," a source said, adding, that the Centre has raised concern with China and Myanmar regarding smuggling of arms through their territories.

A MHA document says Maoists are working in close association with the PLA of Manipur, which also has a base in Myanmar. "The Maoists have been found carrying Chinese-made arms, but we do not know yet whether they procured the weapons directly from China or were supplied arms by north-eastern militant outfits," the source said.

April 21

Two cadres of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi, identified as 'Lieutenant' Engo Konyak and '2nd Lieutenant' Shannau Konyak, were killed by NSCN-K cadres in at the junction of Phushumi village near V.K. town under Zunheboto District.

April 22

NSCN-K has once again reiterated that there could be no "reconciliation" at the expense of sovereignty stating that it (sovereignty) was not a "mere traditional concept".

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi reiterated that the "Indo-Naga" political solution demanded practical solution with clear opinion and "will of the people". Stating that ambiguity and inconsistent politics have failed the Nagas for many years, it said that "Indo-Naga" political struggle has entered a more practical zone with NSCN-Khole-Kitovi making necessary preparations to consult all strata of Naga society to pursue the "realistic political solution" that was acceptable to Naga people. They also made it clear that S.S Khaplang, who was "impeached and expelled from NSCN on June 7, 2011", was reportedly in touch with the junta backed Myanmar Government to seek some sort of autonomy under its constitution, "has lost all legitimacy" in western Naga homeland.

April 24

NSCN-K said NSCN-Khole-Kitovi's "espousal" of Eastern (Myanmar) and Western Nagaland (India) was another ideology for further partitioning Naga areas rather than "dismantling" the arbitrary imposed "artificial boundaries" by Myanmar and India.

It also stated that Khole-Kitovi had chosen their path "(Nagas of Nagaland)" and the NSCN-K would "neither interfere nor question" their choices since it had "nothing to do with" the pursuits of Naga political goal.

April 25

Naga Hoho (NH) [Apex body of Naga tribes] expressed its desire that the ongoing cease-fire between NSCN-K and GoI which was listed to "expire" on April 28 be extended.

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi group's CFSB members would be leaving for New Delhi on April 26 to discuss extension of the ongoing cease-fire agreement scheduled to expire on April 28.

April 26

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi CFSB supervisor C. Singson while leaving for Delhi for the extension of cease-fire agreement between the outfit and Government of India which expires on April 28 said that the latter was "very positive" for the proposed peace talks between the two parties.

Talks that will ink the crucial bilateral cease-fire agreement between NSCN-K and Myanmar Government on the long drawn Naga-Myanmar political issue was reported to have started at "Khamti" town in Myanmar located beyond the borders of India.

Besides working out strategies and modalities for setting up cease-fire ground rules, the meeting will also deliberate on NSCN-K's proposal.

April 27

GoI and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi signed a fresh cease-fire agreement in Delhi. NSCN-Khole-Kitovi's CFSB supervisor C Singson confirmed that his group has signed fresh cease-fire with Government of India for a period of one year.

Cease-fire agreement (CFA) between the GoI and NSCN-K could not be extended. NSCN-K on April 27 said that it would not "continue bilateral cease-fire" with the GoI at the "dictation" of MHA.

NSCN-IM joint council has said Naga people were "concerned" on the proposed talks between NSCN-K and the Myanmar military junta, saying all Nagas were inseparable parts of the whole and 'Nagalim' embraces all their Naga ancestral domains. According to NSCN-IM leaders it was under the legitimate leadership of Isak and Muivah that had declared "unilateral ceasefire" with the Myanmar Government years ago.

Notably, the Khaplang group has signed a truce with the Myanmar Government on April 12. Top leaders of the NSCN-Khaplang had left Nagaland for Yangon few days before the signing of the truce, according to a report.

India has told Myanmar to ask NSCN-K to stop helping other Indian militant groups.

The NSCN-IM refuted the Indian intelligence bureau reports about Chinese funding Maoists in the North East including Nagaland. Maintaining that it cannot comment on Maoists' activities or presence in the other States, the NSCN-IM, however, said in Nagaland, if there be any activities or presence as alleged, it was "certainly the creation of Assam Government and India."

April 28

N Kitovi Zhimomi 'general secretary' of the NSCN-Khole-Kitovi said his cadres would abide by the ceasefire ground rules, but would not deposit arms before final negotiations/agreements. As reported earlier, NSCN-Khole-Kitovi signed cease-fire with the Government of India on April 27. The ceasefire is effective from April 28, 2012 for a period of one year.

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi said that senior functionary member and 'vice chairman' of NSCN-K, identified as Khoba Phom, "in an act of exhibiting the spirit of Nationalism, and to strengthen the Indo-Naga political issue", along with nine others joined its group. The newly joined members opined that the need of the hour for the Naga people was to reconcile and embrace together unconditionally.

After building close links with ULFA-ATF, the GNLA are developing contacts in the neighbouring Nagaland and procuring sophisticated arms from Naga militant groups, who route the weapons via Guwahati (Assam), making it more difficult for the city Police to intercept them.

According to the source, the Nagaland-based outfits are getting these arms from Myanmar and some Chinese agents. "They buy an assault rifle for around Rs 8 lakh [INR 800,000] and a sophisticated pistol for Rs 4-5 lakh [INR 400,000-500,000].

April 29

Reacting to the reports of delay in the extension of cease-fire between the Government of India and NSCN-K, Nagaland Government appealed to the Centre to further extend the cease-fire between the two entities.

May 1

The meeting between representatives of GoI and NSCN-K leaders for extension of ceasefire scheduled on April 30 in Delhi has been postponed as more NSCN-K leaders are expected to arrive in Delhi to attend the meeting. NSCN-K sources said the minor differences between the GoI and NSCN-K have been ironed out in a meeting held on April 28.

UHM P. Chidambaram denied that negotiations with NSCN-K and Central Government were in danger even as the ceasefire agreement renewal is yet to be done. Notably, NSCN-K ceasefire with Central Government expired on April 28.

May 2

Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur, referring to the issue of militants operating in the northeastern States of India getting help from China, told the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) that the Chinese Government has conveyed that it would never support armed groups that are against the Government of India.

May 3

Bilateral ceasefire agreement between NCSN-K and theGoI was extended for another year, five days after it last expired on April 28. Member of CFMG and kilonser (minister) H. Vusshe said that both sides (GoI and NSCN-K) came to this agreement after hectic parleys over certain "pressing" and "pertinent" issues related to the implementation of ceasefire ground rules were agreed upon. Vusshe, however, denied the delay of extension to the ceasefire on April 28 with issues relating to his organisation's bilateral ceasefire agreement with the Government of Myanmar.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio advocated for two separate solutions to Naga political problem, one with New Delhi while other with Myanmar, since the Nagas were divided between the two countries by the erstwhile colonial rulers.

May 4

The GoI will "keep a close watch" on the activities and movement of NSCN-K faction leaders and cadres during the next one year extended period of ceasefire. Disclosing this, a senior official in the Union Home Ministry said, "If they are found extending any help to any of the anti-Indian insurgent groups or indulging in factional killing, the ceasefire agreement may come to a naught."

The Government sources indicated that the NSCN-K was categorically asked to ensure that no anti-Indian insurgent outfit or their members be allowed in the Eastern Nagaland area of Myanmar where the NSCN-K rules. The Government is believed to have got the report that Paresh Baruah led ULFA besides Manipur based PREPAK and PLA have a regular movement in the Khaplang dominated area of Myanmar.

May 8

With the extension of the cease fire between the GoI and the NSCN-K on May 3, 2012, the latter became the only outfit in the North east region to have entered into a cease fire agreement with two countries-India and Myanmar.

Assam Rifles personnel arrested two tax collectors of NSCN-Khole- Kitovi, identified as Bokato Zhimo and Ramlal Shah, from Marwari Patti in Dimapur. Some tax collection receipts and INR 3,000 in cash were recovered from them.

GoI has decided in principle to start peace talks with the NSCN-Khole-Kitovi faction while the latter was expecting a formal invitation from the GoI soon to initiate peace talks with their group.

Recalling the bilateral ceasefire agreement signed between NSCN-K and the Union of Myanmar on April 9 at Khamti town (Myanmar) after more than 60 years, the outfit said that the representatives in the meeting clearly pointed out that it was "an authentic political institution struggling for Naga sovereignty with mass support across the artificial boundary," .

NSCN-Khole-Kitovi, said it welcomed three "home comers" from NSCN-K who had joined its fold along with six arms from Konyak region on May 5.

NSCN-K also said nearly a dozen "compatriots", who earlier were loyalists of NSCN-Khole-Kitovi, have joined "national platform" during the last few weeks, and described their joining as "another boost to the ever coagulating Naga struggle under NSCN/GPRN led by SS. Khaplang".

May 9

Security Forces arrested one Ghosheto Swu, a regular tax collector of NSCN-IM from Signal Basti in Dimapur. The accused confessed to have carried out tax collection in Signal Basti area on "commission basis." Tax collection receipts and incriminating documents along with INR 1890 were also seized from him.

In the aftermath of the April 19 incident near Hebron involving the 29 Assam Rifles (AR) and NSCN-IM, both appear to be at loggerheads again when 32 AR reportedly surrounded around 40 NSCN-IM cadres stationed at Kejanglwa village under Jalukie sub-division in Peren District.

SFs arrested two "tax collectors" of FGN, identified as Vikujha Awomi and Nilota Aye, were arrested from Darogapathar area in Dimapur along with 'tax collection' receipts and cash.

Exactly a month after signing a ceasefire agreement with the Myanmarese authority, the NSCN-K said it will open a "truce supervisory" office in the neighbouring country, Myanmar at Khamti town.

May 10

Four cadres belonging to FGN, identified as Arum Zhimo, Mughato Zhimo, Akito Sema and Abeto Zhimomi, were arrested while collecting tax from brick laden trucks in Darogajan and Bamanpukhri areas in Dimapur. Various tax collection receipts of the FGN along with INR 9725 were seized from their possession. All the accused along with the seized items were later handed over to Dimapur Police.

Naga Hoho (the apex body of the Nagas) said it would send a delegation to New Delhi and talk with the central leaders to find an early solution to the Naga political problem.

India has sought the details of the major ground rules of the ceasefire agreement inked between the Myanmar Government and NSCN-K, which is currently on ceasefire with the Government of India as well.

May 11

GoI in a move to bring about "final settlement" to the protracted Naga political issue, said it was ready to engage all three Naga militant groups- NSCN-IM, NSCN-K and NSCN-Khole-Kitovi for peace talks.

The Sixty sixth meeting of CFMG between CFMG and NSCN-IM CFMC members was held at Police complex Chumukedima in Dimapur. CFMG chairman Major General (Retd) N. George said that the meeting discussed to resolve misinterpretation of CFGR to avoid recurrence of any situation.

European ambassadors and members from the European Union would most likely facilitate the ongoing Naga talk, which has reached a crucial stage. The ambassadors of seven countries - Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Germany, Poland and Slovakia - and members from the EU - would arrive in Kohima on May 13.

May 13

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram said unlawful activities of CPI-Maoist will not be tolerated in the northeast.

The Naga Hoho, the apex body of the Nagas after deliberating over the 15 year-long Indo-Naga cease fire vis-à-vis political dialogue between the NSCN-IM and Government of India has called for Indo-Naga political settlement within 2012.

Peace activist Niketu Iralu said though the Nagas have strong aspirations for integration of Nagas-inhabited areas in northeast, the Naga groups remain divided amongst themselves. Iralu said the weakening of the negotiating strength among them was primarily due to divisions among Nagas.
