January 6

Two children and a woman are killed and three persons sustain injuries as an abandoned grenade explodes at Moirangkhunou under Moirang police station limits in the Bishnupur district.

The Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), through a statement released in Imphal, asks the heads of educational institutions to impose the eeyongphi phanek (traditional local dress) as uniform for girl students of classes IX and X from the forthcoming academic session, beginning February.

Kuki National Army (KNA) terrorists kill a student, identified as Tontang Koshang, at Molnom Kuki village in the Ukhrul district.

A combined team of the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) and Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) terrorists kill the ‘chief’ of Kuki National Army (KNA) during an internecine clash at Diyang in Churachandpur district. In a statement released to the local media, KRA ‘administration secretary’, L Jacob, claims that KNA chief, Vipin Haokip, was ‘given capital punishment’ for working against the interests of the Kuki people as well as acting as an ‘agent of the Indian Government’.

Security force personnel kill a suspected KNA terrorist, identified as Zangkhopao Kuki, during an encounter between Pashang and Molnom villages in the Ukhrul district.

A betel trader is abducted and later shot dead by suspected terrorists at Akampat Students’ Organization ground under Irinbung police station jurisdiction in the Imphal East district.

PULF terrorists attack a passenger bus at Sora for having ‘violated’ the outfit’s orders of suspending vehicular movement along the Imphal-Moreh route. Consequently, transporters suspend services along the route in protest against the attack.

February 26

A civilian is killed by unidentified terrorists at Kot Suohoi village in the Churachandpur district.

February 27

In a press statement, the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) claims to have ‘punished’ the principal of an Imphal-based private school for allegedly taking bribes from some students.

Oinam Ibungochouba alias Ingo, the KCP ‘secretary’ (organisation), is killed by unidentified terrorists at Thinungei Mamang Patpal in the Bishnupur district.

February 28

The PULF, in a statement, claims that two drug peddlers have surrendered to the outfit.

The KYKL imposes a ban on the functioning of cabin restaurants in the State with effect from March 1 and asks people to stop visiting such places. A statement by the outfit says that such restaurants are a "major factor in the moral degeneration of our society".

March 2

Unidentified terrorists shot at and injure Th. Kullachandra, Principal of the Manipur Institute of Technology-Takyelpat, at Mongsangei in the Imphal West district for having refused to pay an extortion amount of Rupees Five lakhs.

The KYKL imposes a ‘curfew’ within 300 metres of all examination centres for the Class XII examination scheduled to start on March 3.

The KYKL cadres shoot at and injure the owner of a restaurant for violating its diktat of shutting down all cabin restaurants.

SF personnel kill an Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) cadre in the Churachandpur district.

Two unidentified terrorists are killed during an encounter with the troops at Keinou Yangoipat in the Bishnupur district.

Two UNLF terrorists are killed in an encounter with the police at Laphupattera in the Bishnupur district. A PLA terrorist is arrested during search operations in the Wahengbam Leikai area subsequent to the encounter.

The Manipur Human Rights Protection Guild (MHRPG) activists fire two shots at the office of a sericulture project at Bamon Leikai in the Imphal East district.

March 5

Police recovers the dead body of a KCP cadre, Laishram Maigou, from Laphupat Tera in Bishnupur district.

Unidentified terrorists, in separate incidents, shoot at and injure three persons, including a woman, for selling and consuming liquor at Gamnom Sapermeina in the Senapati district and Chakpikarong in Chandel district.

March 6

Two KCP terrorists are killed in an exchange of fire with the police personnel at Khongman Kitanapanug area in the Imphal East district.

A KNA cadre is killed at Kanglatombi in the Imphal West district.

March 7

Five PREPAK terrorists are arrested during cordon and search operations launched by the security forces’ in the Imphal east and Thoubal districts.

Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, while speaking to the media in Imphal, said that his Government has received proposals for peace talks from two militant groups in the State.

March 8

16 transport agency proprietors are arrested by the Imphal West district police for having not paid a sum of Rupees 95 lakhs to the Government with the help of the KYKL.

The KYKL asks six teachers, including the Principal of Thambal Marik College at Oinam in Senapati district, to resign from their respective posts within 20 days on charges of ‘encouraging the students to use unfair means’ in the ongoing class XII examination.

August 28 The Kuki National Front (KNF) opposes any handing over of 'Kuki territories' to the NSCN-IM without prior consent and mandate of the Kuki tribals. Claiming that Nagas are the 'non owner of the land', the outfit says that it is keeping a close tab on the Union Government's negotiations with the NSCN-IM.

September 8 Newspapers in Manipur go off stands protesting against the interference of militant outfits in their functioning. An unidentified militant outfit had 'banned' two local newspapers and the cable network ISTV for not "properly" reporting the abduction of the Manipur University Students' Union president on September 6.
September 9 A heavy exchange of fire reported between the NSCN-IM and NSCN-K cadres at Irengkhul under Sapermaina police station in the Senapati district.
September 12 One Assam Rifles personnel is killed and five persons, including three civilians, sustain injuries in an explosion targeting an SF convoy at Langmeidong on the Imphal-Sugnu road in Thoubal district.
September 13 PLA releases Manipur University Students' Union leader, Kh. Ashok Kumar, after a week in captivity.
September 14 Chairman of the UNLF, Sanayaima, in an interview with the Reuters in Hong Kong rules out negotiations with the Union Government without United Nations mediation. Sanayaima says, "Whether we remain with India or whether we become a sovereign, independent nation, let the people decide. Considering India is the largest democracy in the world, I think they should accept the challenge."
September 15 Imphal East district police arrests four militants of the NSCN-K from a house during a cordon and search operation at Paomei Colony.

September 20 The Yairipok police recover a dead body of a youth, identified as Mohammed Nazim Ali alias Kalu, from Wangkhem.
September 21

Two BSF personnel are killed in an ambush by the PLA at Kumbi Khodrak road under Kumbi police station in the Bishnupur district.

A civilian, identified as Seikhothang alias Thangboi, is shot dead by unidentified militants at Sielmat Pine Hills in the Churachandpur district.

September 22 Union Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee informs in Imphal that at least eight militant outfits in Manipur have declared informal ceasefires' with the Union Government. "Eight armed groups are currently in peace mode with security forces operating in Manipur with an arrangement between them that they suspend operations against each other and cease hostilities", he says.
October 1

The UNLF declares a ban on the activities of the KCP-P. A statement by the outfit says that the KCP-P "has gone against the wishes and aspirations of the people and has been leaving a bad impression on revolutionary movements launched by other underground organisations."

A KCP-P cadre, identified as Sinam Sanatomba alias Sharma, and his civilian accomplice, Ningthoujam Abung alias Suraj, are found dead with bullet injuries at Langthabal Phura Makhong under Singjamei police station limits.

October 7 Two youths are shot dead by unidentified militants at Chanam Sandrong under Irilbung police station in the Imphal East district.
October 8

A suspected KCP cadre is shot dead by the Manipur Police at Thangal bazaar in Imphal.

October 9 Four soldiers are killed in an ambush by the UNLF at Zoupi under the Chakpikarong police station in Chandel district.

October 11

Two militants, one each belonging to the UNLF and PLA, are killed in an internecine clash at Kam Ranga village under the Jiribam police station in the Imphal West district.

October 16

A civilian of Khanpi village under Henglep subdivision of Churachandpur district is killed after he inadvertently steps on an IED booby trap planted by the militants.

Three drug addicts are shot in their calves by suspected KYKL cadres at Turen Wangma under the Kakching police station in the Thoubal district.

October 17

Two unidentified militants are killed in an encounter with the police at Laphupokpi under Irilbung police station in the Imphal East district.

October 18

Suspected UNLF militants kill two KCP cadres at Tentha in the Thoubal district. The UNLF had earlier imposed a ban on all three factions of the KCP accusing them of indulging in extortion in the name of revolution.

October 29

Two suspected former cadres of the NSCN-K are killed by unidentified militants at Deulahland under Imphal police station.

November 2

KYKL imposes a ban on Melas (local fairs) saying, "these Melas have become a bed rock of immorality, obscenity and drug abuse." In a statement released by the ‘Deputy Secretary Publicity & Research’ of the outfit, Apabi Mangang, claims that Melas "help in a big way in the larger strategy of the Government of India to corrupt the people of the State morally, economically and politically."

November 3

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) extends the ban on four militant outfits operating in Manipur for two years. Addressing the press after a CCS meeting chaired by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that the Union Government has decided to extend the ban on UNLF, PLA, KCP and KYKL.

November 6

The Imphal West district police arrests PREPAK chairman, Meishnam Biren alias Achanba, during a cordon and search operation at Haobam Marak Irom Leikai area.

November 7

UNLF refutes the claim by Maj. Gen. A.K. Samantaray, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Corps, that several militant groups active in the Imphal valley, including the UNLF and the PLA, were in contact with the army and are contemplating surrender. Ksh. Yoiheiba, ‘senior publicity officer’ of the UNLF, describes the claim as "lies and rubbish" "intended to create confusion among the rank and file of the UNLF."

November 8

21 persons, including 13 women, are injured in an explosion at Thangal market area in Imphal city. Two injured persons subsequently succumb to their injuries.Two suspected KCP-P cadres are killed in an encounter with the police at the foothills of Etam hill in the Imphal East district.

November 13

Three CRPF personnel are killed and two others sustain injuries in an ambush by the UNLF at a spot between Kaimai and Sibilong, under Nungba police station in the Tamenglong district

November 14

UNLF claims responsibility for the November 12 ambush on the CRPF foot patrol and says it "can strike at the Indian forces anytime and anywhere at will."

November 18

Two unidentified militants are killed at Keikhu under Porompat police station in the Imphal East district.

Another unidentified militant is killed at Thanga Lawai Paton under Moirang police station in the Bishnupur district.

November 19

Four member of a family are killed and a SF personnel is injured in an encounter between the Assam Rifles and a combined team of NSCN-K and UNLF militants at Longmai part-III village under Longmai police station in the Tamenglong district. The injured SF personnel succumbs to his injury subsequently.

November 21

One civilian is killed in an IED blast in the Tolbung village of Churachandpur district

November 22

The bullet marked dead body of an unidentified civilian, killed by unidentified militants, is recovered from Leimakhong Bazaar under Sapermaina police station in the Senapati district.

November 26

A civilian is killed in a landmine explosion at Jiribam in the Parbung sub-division of Churachandpur district.

November 29

Three civilians are killed by unidentified militants at Tentha Tuwangbam under Kakching police station in the Thoubal district.

December 6

One BSF personnel is killed in an IED explosion by the UNLF at Yairipok Bamon Leikai Mang in Thoubal district.

December 7

One member of the Kadangbal gram panchayat (local self-government) of Imphal East district is killed by unidentified militants at Sambrei Wakangkhong under Heigang police station.

December 11

One UNLF militant is killed in an encounter in the Chakpikarong subdivision of Chandel district and a former KYKL cadre is killed by unidentified militants at Leishoi Leikai under Moirang police station.

December 15

Four militants are killed in a clash between the KNA and KNF-P at the Koubru Hill Range under Gamnom Sapermeina police station in Senapati district.

December 20

KLA militants in an ambush kill Assam Rifles personnel at Cheijang Bongyang Kuki village under Yairipok police station in the Thoubal district.

A civilian is killed in an IED explosion near Thanlon village in Churchandpur district.

December 21

The ‘defense secretary’ of KNF, Mangoi, killed in the Imphal West district.

December 22

Two civilians are killed by unidentified militants at Nungchap forest under Jiribam police station in the Imphal East district.

December 25

Security forces arrest two NSCN-K cadres, including a ‘sergeant’, in the Jiribam sub-division of Imphal East district.

December 27

Four UNLF cadres and one SF personnel is killed in an encounter at Ningthoukhong Mamang Pat near Loktak Lake in the Bishnupur district.

December 29

Five civilians, including four children, are injured in KYKL-triggered IED blasts at the Ngariyan community hall on the Old Cachar road connecting the Bishnupur and Tamenglong districts and at the Bekra circle in Bishnupur district.

The merger of three Kuki militant outfits, KRA, UKLF and the KNF- S, under the banner of the KNC against the KNA is announced by the ‘commanding officer’ of the KRA, Maj Max, at Sadar Hills area.

December 30

One of the child victims of the December 29 bomb blast near Ngariyan community hall in Imphal succumbs to her injuries.

December 31

The Inspector General of Police (Intelligence), Tunglut Thangthaum, is killed along with a Constable and two police personnel are injured in an attack by the PLA on the National Highway 153 in Bishnupur district.
