January 7

The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) militants kill a teenager, Ramdhan, having failed to find his father, Mangaldhan Tripura, at their home at Dinarampara village. Mangaldhan was reportedly a police informer.

January 10 The dead body of a youth, Gopaljoy Tripura, who was abducted by NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction from his residence at Chowmanu in the Dhalai district, is recovered from a nearby forest.
January 12 The Border Security Force (BSF) discloses that at least 85 persons, including 31 Indian nationals and 54 Bangladeshi nationals, were arrested during ex-filtration and infiltration attempts along the India-Bangladesh border running through Tripura between December 1 and December 31, 2006.
January 14

A NLFT militant, Debrai Tripura, is wounded in an internecine clash between cadres of the same outfit at Ananada Royaja Para village under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district.

A NLFT militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Memberjoy Tripura, is arrested during a search operation at village Uju Chakma Para under Raishyabari police station in the Dhalai district.

January 16

Two NLFT militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Nirmal Debbarma and Binode Debbarma, are arrested following an encounter with the security force personnel at Hari Kumar Para under Champahowar police station in the West Tripura district.

A NLFT militant, Galpuram Reang, is arrested from Salka Para village under Ompi police station.

January 21

Intelligence source reports that Tripura-based militants have shifted some of their hideouts in Bangladesh due to the erection of barbed wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border. Deputy Inspector General of the Border Security Force (Tripura Frontier), Sanjoy Kundu, informs the Chief Minister Manik Sarkar that militants have been constrained to move along the border due to fencing.

January 25

Seven militants of the ATTF and NLFT surrender at Hrankhalpara under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. They deposited two 9mm Pistols with 10 rounds, one 9mm Carbine with 10 rounds, two 9mm auto Pistols with 9 rounds and 50 rounds of 303-rifle. The militants were identified as Satya Ranjan Debbarma, Jogal Debbarma, Ashis Kumar Debbarma, Tapan Debbarma, Ashesh Debbarma, Indra Mohan Malsum and Satya Ranjan Debbarma.

January 31

Three armed extortionists of the Bru Liberation Front of Mizoram (BLFM), identified as Diga Reang, Laldinuma Reang and Darthing Reang, are captured by villagers at Tharma and later handed over to Vangmun police in the North Tripura district.

February 1

The Union Tribal Welfare Minister Jitendra Chowdhury said that INR 55 million out of a total INR 550 million has been sanctioned as the first instalment for the rehabilitation of the militants of the Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT.

February 5

Security force personnel arrest a suspected NLFT militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Kutti Ram Tripura, during a search operation at old Maliraj Roaja para under Salema police station in the Dhalai district.

February 8

A tribal leader belonging to the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), identified as Ratansen Tripura, is killed by the NLFT militants at his home in the Ratan Nagar village of Dhalai district. The militants while fleeing shot at and injured another CPI-M worker, Tanijay Tripura, near the Ratan Nagar bridge.

Police arrest three NLFT militants, identified as Ratan Tripura, Saidol Asalong and Alakjay Asalong, from a shop in GB Market Square.

February 10

Three NLFT militants, Bimal Debbarma, Mangal Debbarma and Rupchand Debbarma, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender at Khumlwng in the West Tripura district.

At least nine militants of the Meghalaya-based HNLC, including its senior leader Herman Pakyntein, surrendered along with a rifle and two shot guns at Panisagar in the North Tripura district. According to police sources, the present cadre strength of the HNLC is estimated to be around 60 to 70, following the surrender.

Three NLFT militants, Bimal Debbarma, Mangal Debbarma and Rupchand Debbarma, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender at Khumlwng in the West Tripura district.

February 13

The construction of rail track between Kumarghat and Agartala is affected due to security threat posed by the militants. Designated construction companies reportedly urged the North Eastern Frontier Railway to ask the Tripura Government to ensure adequate security at the construction sites. Out of a total of 170 minor bridges, the construction of 162 bridges was completed while work for eight more bridges is yet start. Construction of tunnels at Longthorai Valley and Atharamura Hills was also reportedly affected due to militant threat.

February 16

A leader of the ruling Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M), Phalendra Reang, who was abducted by NLFT militants at gun point from his residence at Ashapurnaroaja Para area in the Dhalai district on January 8, is released after 39 days of captivity.

February 20

One NLFT militant, Narendra Debbarma alias Kalak, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction is arrested from his residence at Tuichakatar village under Salema police station in the Dhalai district. Narendra was involved in the abduction of a person, Sailendra Debbarma, from South Panbua under the same police station. A collaborator of the same outfit, identified as Sachindra Debbarma, is also arrested from Champahowar area in the same district.

February 24

An ‘area commander’ of the NLFT, identified as Krishnadhan Debbarma, is killed in retaliatory firing by the security force (SF) personnel who were attacked by the militants at Bablabari village under Champahaor police station in the West Tripura district. SFs recovered spent cartridges and other used materials from hideout of the militants who escaped with Debbarma’s firearms. Debbarma had reportedly been on the run for the past two years.

Two ATTF collaborators are arrested, while they come to extort ransom worth INR 35,000 from a bottling plant at Kalagachia under Sidhai police station in the West Tripura district.

An ATTF militant, Sonaicharan Debbarma, is arrested from South Goklunagar village under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. Debbarma was reportedly involved in the massacre of 15 non-tribal people at Kalyanpur under Khowai sub-division on August 14, 2003.

February 25

Two NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Dinesh Debbarma and Sachindra Debbarma, surrender before Tripura Police at Radhapur in the South Tripura district.

Two ATTF collaborators, identified as Jitendra Reang and Gamsai Reang, are arrested from Balarampara areas under Kachucherra police station in the Dhalai district.

Two unidentified NLFT collaborators are arrested from Kalyanpur and Teliamura police station areas in the West Tripura district.

March 1

One NLFT militant, Joangfa Tripura, is shot dead by Dhalai district police at Sajaigroupingpara under Manu police station. While other militants manage to escape, a Chinese grenade is recovered from the encounter site.

March 2

Two militants of the ATTF and NLFT, identified as Biraha Kumar Jamatia alias Yakharia and Geeta Tripura alias Kaplop, surrender at Teliamura in the West Tripura district. They deposit two 38 factory-made revolvers along with six live rounds of 38 ball ammunitions. The report adds that 21 militants surrendered before the 15 Assam Rifles alone in the last four months.

Militants shot dead two persons, Tikendra Tripura and Tapan Tripura, at Joychandrapara under Langatarai Valley police station in the Dhalai district. Police suspected the involvement of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT.

Two brick field labourers, Jiban Oraon and Bijoy Oraon, were abducted by militants at Jagabandhupara in the Dhalai district, while they were traveling in a truck. Another person who was abducted escaped.

Two NLFT militants belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as ‘sgn.’ Biralal Kishore Jamatia alias Barchu alias Baga and ‘corporal’ Nayan Hari Jamatia alias Nanjia, surrender at Jampaijala under Takarjala police station in the West Tripura district. They deposit 9mm carbine ammn-20 rounds, 7.62 BDR-8 rounds, Chinese grenade-1. Two collaborators of the same faction, identified as Sailaram Reang and Jagat Sadhan Jamatia, also surrender with them.

March 3

Two suspected militants, Haranjoy Reang and Debendra Reang, are arrested and four guns are recovered following an encounter with security personnel at Tankaraipra under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district.

March 4

One NLFT militant belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Rabarai Reang, is arrested from Sachindra Chowdhury area under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district.

One country made gun is recovered from Togpoo Hatai Para under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. Separately, a country made gun is recovered from Katatilla under Kamalpur police station in the Dhalai district.

March 5

Police arrest two suspected militants, Rabindra Reang and Dinesh Reang, during a search operation at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district. They were involved in the March 2- abduction of two labourers from Jagubandhupara.

March 5

Tripurainfo reports that personnel of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) arrested four militants operating in Tripura, including a NLFT cadre Suren Debbarma, from Moulavibazaar area on an unspecified date in February. Suren Debbarma was involved in several ambushes on security forces and massacres of civilians in Tripura. He was an ‘area commander’ of Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT when he led a ambush on TSR, in which 20 security personnel were killed at Hirapur in the West Tripura district on August 20, 2002. Later he defected to NLFT’s Biswamohan Debabarma faction.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar informs the State Legislative Assembly that 171 civilians were killed and 183 more were injured in militant attacks in the State during January 2004 to January 2007. During the same period 197 civilians were abducted by various militant outfits. Chief Minister further says 104 militants of different outfits were killed in encounters with security forces and 71 security personnel were killed in militant attacks during the same period. He mentions that Biswamohan Debabarma faction of the NLFT carried out maximum attacks during the period, including 93 attacks in 2004, 61 in 2005 and 62 in 2006. Chief Minister adds that 862 militants and collaborators surrendered during the tenure of the present Government, adding that highest figure of surrender was 322 in 2004. He further says that the State Government has already informed the Union Government about the presence of militant hideouts in Mizoram.

March 6

Two Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, Samir Choudhury and Aloke Das, are killed and two others, Shyama Chandra Debbarma and Sukdeb Tripura, are seriously injured in an ambush by ATTF militants at Binan Hazaripara under Champahawr police station in Khowai subdivision of West Tripura district. Militants manage to decamp with two AK 47 rifles.

Three militants, including a ‘lance corporal’ of the NLFT, are arrested by the security forces following an encounter at Tankarai Para under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district. Four country made guns are recovered from them.

March 7

Tripura Public Works Department Minister Badal Choudhury informs the State Legislative Assembly that 5317 families were uprooted due to militancy during the last three years and out of them, only 2786 families were rehabilitated to their respective homes.

March 8

Militants belonging to the Borok National Council of Tripura (BNCT) abduct a school teacher, Shambujoy Tripura, from Durjoynagar under Manikpur police station.

Two electronic detonators, bomb and one country made gun are recovered from Tripura basti under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. The explosive weighing about one kilogram wrapped in a plastic bag is defused.

March 10

One BLFM militant, Gandhi Reang alias Dragon, is killed at Asha para village near a displaced Bru refugee camp under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. According to police sources, Dragon was an inmate of Refugee camp and he was involved in several militant activities. While two other militants are arrested, one country made pistol, one 9 mm revolver with two live rounds are recovered from the encounter site.

March 11

Two ATTF militants, including one identified as Kanchanlal Debbarma alias Kasak, are killed at Marahadok village under Khowai police in the West Tripura district. Other militants manage to escape from the encounter site. One Chinese pistol and a Chinese grenade are recovered from the encounter site.

March 12

Seven NSCN-IM cadres desert their camp at Paithal in Khagrachari of Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh and surrender at the Border Security Force (BSF) headquarters in the North Tripura. They are identified as self-styled 'second lieutenant' John Lithungo, 'sergeant major' Jackov Lovingson, 'sergeant' Dickson, 'sergeant' Ashin, 'sergeant' Manush, 'corporal' Shetoy and 'captain' David Tpung. They deposit one AK-56 assault rifle, one AK-47 assault rifle, four M-21 rifles, one sniper and one 7.62 rifle, eight Chinese-hand grenades, 1,306 rounds of assorted ammunition and eight magazines. The report adds that altogether 10 cadres deserted the camp on February 12, and on their way to India they had an encounter with 17 militants sent from the Paithal camp to chase them. Following the encounter, three of them were dragged back to the NSCN-IM camp while the rest seven managed to escape.

March 17

Kali Mohan Tripura, a NLFT collaborator belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction, is arrested from Pancharaan Para under Raishyabari police station in the Dhalai district.

March 28

SFs arrested one cadre of the Biswamohan Debbarma action of the NLFT, identified as Sanjoy Tripura, from Khagend Roaja Para village in the Dhalai district. Another NLFT (BM faction) cadre, Mangal Charan Debbarma, is arrested from Bangshi Para village in the West Tripura district.

Two hardcore ATTF cadres, Raju Debbarma alias Imang and Sukan Debbarma alias Mazang, surrendered and deposited one AK-56 rifle, one AK-66 rifle, seven magzines and 194 live rounds of AK series, before the SFs at Radha Charan Para village in the West Tripura district.

March 29

Four ATTF cadres, Saroj Debbarma alias Silong Debbarma, Radha Kishu Debbarma alias Daphun, Animesh Debbarma alias Likong and Pradeep Debbarma alias Rupai, surrendered to the SFs at Hrankhalpara in the West Tripura district.

Two ATTF cadres, Dhananjoy Debbarma and Mithun Debbarma, surrendered before the Police at Teliamura.

Two extremists of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, Reklai Jamatia and Amish Kumar Jamatia, surrendered before the police along with one pistol and three live rounds Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district.

March 30

The number of surrenders of both the ATTF and the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT has risen to 14, with the surrender of two hardcore cadres of ATTF, identified as Predesh Debbarma and Purnab Debbarma, at Chakmaghat in the West Tripura district.

One BLFM cadre, identified as Kalkhuma Reang, sustained injuries when villagers of Kathalbagan in the South Tripura district assaulted him. Police sources said that a group of BLFM militants were trying to extort money from the villagers when the incident occurred.

April 3

Two hardcore militants, identified as Laila Tripura alias Boura and Adam Jyoti Tripura, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrendered and also deposited two 9-mm revolvers, one grenade and five live rounds of 9-mm revolver at the Border Security Force headquarters at Salbagan in the West Tripura district.

April 4

A gun battle occurred between SF personnel and NLFT militants at Chandramani village in the Dhalai district. However, no casualty is reported.

April 5

Four hardcore cadres of the ATTF and the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrendered before the SFs at Jirania in the West Tripura district.

April 7

SFs killed two militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of NLFT, Manoj Debbarma and Arpan Debbarma, and recovered a Chinese-make grenade, subscription notes of the outfit and other incriminating documents from their possession in the Mainak village of West Tripura district.

April 10

Two ATTF cadres, Bir Kishore Debbarma alias Mithun and a woman cadre, Piyali Debbarma, laid down their arms before the security forces and deposited one Chinese-make grenade and incriminating documents at Khowai in the West Tripura district.

April 12

A local court at Khowai in the West Tripura district sentenced a hardcore ATTF militant, identified as Naru Debbarma, to life imprisonment for the abduction and subsequent killing of a tribal villager.

April 14

Six HNLC cadres, identified as Kitbakmar Baniang, Amos Khamnaior, Teidur Kharsahnoh, Orrissal Ynsatlang, Ricky Kharjana and his wife Baitbianglen, surrendered to the Border Security Force at Panisagar in the North Tripura district.

April 17

Security forces arrested one cadre of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Jariham Reang, from Shilabari under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district along with one country made gun.

April 18

BSF personnel clashed with unidentified insurgents at Manicherra under Khowai police station in the West Tripura district and later recovered a Chinese-make air gun, a modern cutter and a bag full of dresses from the incident site.

April 19

One ATTF cadre, identified as Uttam Debbarma, surrendered to the police at Mandai in the West Tripura district.

April 22

A cadre of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Sandhya Ram Debbarma, surrendered and deposited one factory made 9-mm revolver with two live rounds to the Assam Rifles personnel at Hrankhal Para camp in the West Tripura district.

SFs arrested two suspected militants, Debsingh Reang and Sanjib Reang, at Biswarampara village in the Dhalai district and recovered one country-made gun and three live cartridges from their possession.

April 29

Two cadres of the Biswamohan Debbarma of the NLFT, identified as Jamidar Tripura alias Bhanudoy and Suresh Tripura, surrendered and deposited ten live rounds of .303 rifles and ten more live rounds of 7.62 SLR before the security forces at Karbook in the South Tripura district.

May 2

Police killed an unidentified cadre of the ATTF and wounded another during an encounter at Sonatanpara village under Sidhai police station in the West Tripura district.

May 4

A NLFT militant belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Tabji Rai Reang, is arrested along with a country-made gun from Rabamanipura under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura District.

May 6

Police arrest a NLFT collaborator belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Ashok Kumar Debbarma, from Tuisaharpek under Kalyanpur police station in the West Tripura district.

May 7

NLFT militants abduct a civilian, Niru Kumar Debbarma, from Raimohan Sadhupara village under Kalayanpur police station in the West Tripura district.

A ‘sergeant’ of the ATTF, identified as Jogendra Debbarma, surrenders before Police at Abhicharan under Lefunga police station along with a Chinese-make pistol and three live rounds of cartridges.

May 8

Four militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrender to the Police along with two factory made revolvers- one .38 revolver, three live rounds of cartridges. They were identified as Brajendra Reang alias Buchu, Sandairam Reang alias Samuk Naisiekson, Halam alias Debra and Mrinal Debbarma.

May 11

One Assam Rifles personnel, identified as P. Vishiho, is killed in an encounter with the ATTF militants at Jamirlong under Sidhai police station in the West Tripura district.

Suspected NLFT militants triggered an IED blast in the Dhalai district. However, no casualties are reported.

Two insurgents belonging to the ATTF, identified as Udam Singh Tripura and Biswa Mohan Tripura, surrendered before the security forces at Hrankhalpara under Teliamura police station along with two guns and four bullets.

Three NLFT militants, Briguram Jamatia, Dhancharai Reang and Mitrojy Reang, surrendered to the security forces along with two country-made revolvers at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district.

One collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Rupa Kumar Tripura of Matirai Roaja Para under Salema police station, surrendered to the SF personnel at B. C. Para in the Dhalai district.

May 16

Eight militants, including two women cadres, belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) surrendered to the security forces along with one revolver, one grenade and 98 rounds of bullets in the West Tripura district.

May 22

Seven militants belonging to the NLFT and ATTF surrendered to the security forces at Jaharnagar in the Dhalai district and at Khowai in the West Tripura district. They also deposited 700 grams of explosive material, two detonators, one Chinese-make grenade, one wireless hand set, 20 live rounds of SLR, 15 rounds of AK series and 12 live rounds of 9mm revolver.

May 28

BNCT militants abducted two labourers, identified as Sama Laxmi Chakma and Ramani Reang, from Chakbeha Choudhurypara under Manikpur police station in the Dhalai district. The BNCT, which maintains links with the NLFT, was reportedly not active for a long time. However, the outfit has strengthened its base at different places of Longtorai Valley subdivision in the same district, a report said.

The Special Branch (intelligence wing) of the Tripura Police revealed that the NLFT, depleted by a spate of desertions and surrenders over the past three years, is preparing to regroup itself and is reportedly planning to carry out a fresh offensive against the security forces. Intelligence sources added that the NLFT chief Biswamohan Debbarma held a meeting with his commanders in a jungle hideout across the Indo-Bangladesh border at Katacherra near Raisyabari in the Dhalai district on May 17 and planned to target camps of the Tripura State Rifles in the interior areas of the State.

June 3

Suspected militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT abducted six labourers from Govindabari under Manikpur police station in the Dhalai district. They were identified as Nikunja Nath of Padmabill in Khowai, Vidhyarai, Hussain Miah, Fakar Miah, Gian Miah and Khalai Miah of Assam.

June 4

Two militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Sailen Debbarma and Sankar Jamatia, are killed in an encounter with the security forces at Halamtuicha under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district. One Chinese-make grenade was recovered from the incident site.

Two collaborators of NLFT and ATTF, identified as Sakti Debbarma of Tuikuipara and Madan Debbarma of Bahadur Sardarpara, surrendered to the SFs at Teliamura in the West Tripura district.

June 6

Militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, killed one Border Security Force personnel, identified as Dina Bandhu Pal, patrolling at Raishyabari border under Sikandar para Border out Post in the Dhalai district. Security forces also recovered one magazine of SLR with 20 rounds of cartridges from the incident site.

Three insurgents of the NLFT surrendered before the Central Reserve Police Force at Nutunbazaar in the South Tripura district, along with several live cartridges. Altogether 81 insurgents of different outfits have reportedly surrendered to the security forces since January 2007.

June 7

One NLFT cadre, identified as Bikramjoy Tripura, is arrested by the security forces from Thalcherra under Raishaybari police station in the Dhalai district in connection with the killing of one Border Security Force personnel on June 6.

June 8

Security forces rescued three abducted villagers, Annajit Debbarma, Prabhat Debbarma and Drau Kumar Reang, soon after their abduction by militants belonging to the ATTF at Dupicherra under Salema police station in the Dhalai district.

June 9

Suspected NLFT militants abducted one civilian, identified as Utpal Debbarma, from Aidangkur under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district.

June 12

Five militants of the NLFT and ATTF surrendered to the Assam Rifles in two separate incidents in Tripura. Three NLFT militants, identified as Binanjoy Reang alias Chang, Bajuban Reang alias Kakhurai and Mary Darlong, surrendered along with two revolvers and ammunition in the North Tripura district. Similarly, two unidentified insurgents of the ATTF surrendered at Kamalpur in the Dhalai district.

June 13

An arrested insurgent belonging to the NLFT, identified as Maniram Tripura, managed to escape from police custody when he is being taken to the Kulai hospital for a routine check up at Kulai in the Dhalai district. He was arrested on June 6 in connection with an ambush on a BSF patrol party on the same day in which one BSF personnel is killed at Raisyabari in the Dhalai district.

June 15

Nine unidentified NLFT militants surrendered to the security forces along with two grenades, revolvers and a huge cache of ammunition at Khumulwng in the West Tripura district. Another NLFT militant also surrendered to the police at Khowai. Meanwhile, two more NLFT cadres surrendered to the police at Ompi in the South Tripura district.

June 27

Four NLFT militants, identified as Harendra Debbarma, Parthanjoy Reang, J S Jamatiya and A P Jamatiya surrendered to the security forces at Kanchanpur in North Tripura and at Birganj in South Tripura district along with one rifle, two cartridges and one hand grenade.

June 29

Two NLFT cadres, identified as Balendra Reang and Madhuram Rang, surrendered to the security forces at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district.

July 1

Suspected NLFT militants abducted three civilians, Manikya Reang, Kunjamohan Reang and Joysingh Reang, from Bhagaicheeri village under Ambassa police station in the Dhalai District.

July 3

Suspected ATTF militants abducted three unidentified activists of the ruling Communist Party of India–Marxist from a remote tribal hamlet of Dinkobrapara.

July 6

Two members of the NLFT, identified Shankar Debbarma and Mangal Debbarma, are arrested by the security forces at Dasharambari near Jirania in the West Tripura district. A pencil pistol and 20 cartridges are recovered from their possession.

July 13

Mannya Kumar Tripura, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and the vice chairman of the East Govindabari Village Committee under Chawmanu police station in Dhalai district, is abducted along with two Booth Level Officers (BLOs), by Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT militants while returning after taking images of voters of Naisharampara under Chawmanu Assembly constituency in the same district. The two BLOs, identified as Khsetrajoy Reang and Raikumar Tripura, are released later.

Four NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Jagatsadan Jamatia, Joy Jamatia, Ukiljoy Jamatia and Saya Jamatiya, surrendered to the Assam Rifles personnel at Teliamura in the West Tripura district along with one AK 47 rifle, 36 rounds of bullet and one Japanese wireless set.

Two collaborators of the NLFT, Krishnamanik Tripura of Raishyabari and Sanjit Debbarma, surrendered to the security forces at Hrangkhwalpara in the West Tripura district.

Six unidentified NLFT militants surrendered to the Assam Rifles personnel and deposited one AK-47 rifle and 68 live cartridges at Teliamura in the West Tripura district. Two more unidentified NLFT cadres also surrendered in the same area.

Five unidentified militants belonging to the NLFT surrendered to the SFs at an unspecified location. Two more unidentified cadres, including a self-styled corporal of the same outfit, also surrendered to the police at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district.

Security forces killed one NLFT–Biswamohan Debabarma faction militant, identified as Sunaranjan Chakma, at Bilaicherri under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district.

An unidentified insurgent attacked and injured a Border security Force personal and looted his light machine gun from a border outpost at Sher in the Dhalai district bordering Bangladesh.

August 3

Two NLFT militants, identified as Bishnu Ram Tripura and Ranjit Debbarma, surrendered to the Assam Rifles along with two revolvers and live cartridges at Kanchanpur camp in the North Tripura district.

Two unidentified ATTF cadres also surrendered to the security forces at Gumsinghbari border outpost in the West Tripura district.

August 6

Suspected ATTF militants killed three civilians, Malendra Debbarma, Gajendra Debbarma and their 60-year-old mother Krishnabati, at Baijalbari under Khowai police station in the West Tripura district.

Two NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debabarma faction, Swadesh Debbarma and Sukendra Debbarma, surrendered to the security forces at Subharampara under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district along with one Chinese-make grenade and some incriminating documents.

Dhancharam Reang, a civilian who was reportedly abducted by the NLFT militants from Mungiakami police station in the South Tripura district on July 7, returned home after being released by the abductors.

August 14

An unidentified ATTF cadre is shot dead during an encounter with the police at Ratanpur area in the West Tripura district. One AK-47 rifle and live ammunition are recovered from the incident site.

August 15

NLFT militants ambush a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrolling party at Prabhumanipara in the Dhalai district, injuring a CRPF constable, Paramjit Yadav.

August 16

The decomposed body of a suspected collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT is recovered on from Pathlongjoypara under Kanchanpur police station in North Tripura district. Karyai Reang had been abducted by unidentified militants from his house at Pathlongjoypara recently.

August 19

NLFT militants abduct a person, Mohanlal Debbarma, from the Shantir Bazaar area under Kamalpur subdivision of Dhalai district. Mohanlal Debbarma, who is the younger brother of Parimal Debbarma, a local leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, was abducted as he refused to part with funds meant for development work, as demanded by the militants.

August 20

An ATTF militant, Raghu Debbarma, is shot dead at Belbari under Khowai subdivision in the West Tripura district.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, while inaugurating the Khumulwng Degree College near Jirania in the West Tripura district, stated that militant hideouts in neighbouring Bangladesh have reduced from 55 to 26 over the past few years. He said that the groups have been facing trouble following a surrender of militants during the last two years, adding that militants have lost their acceptance in tribal areas as the people have realised the futility of militancy.

August 27

One Tripura State Rifles personnel, Jayanta Roy, is killed by NLFT militants belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction at a work site of the North East Frontier Railways at Swapnabari under Manu police station in the West Tripura district. With this incident, at least seven persons, including two security force personnel, have reportedly been killed in August.

August 28

August 29

One ATTF militant, identified as Ashok Debbarma, is killed in an encounter with the Tripura State Rifles personnel at Nandakumarpara in the West Tripura district.

August 31

Suspected NLFT militants abducted a tribal villager, Negendra Debbarma, from Iswar Chowdhury para under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district.

SFs arrested two suspected militants, Khrendra Reang and Prabharam Reang, from Chanmanipara under Mugiakami police station.

September 4

12 persons were killed in 72 militancy-related incidents that were reported till August 2007 as compared 26 deaths in 102 such incidents in 2006. During the past eight months, 28 civilians were abducted from the West Tripura and the Dhalai districts. A total of 31 such incidents were reported in the West district and 32 cases from the Dhalai district.

September 12

One ATTF ‘area commander’, Upayan Debbarma, is killed and another cadre, Ranjit Debbarma alias Birendra Debbarma, is injured in an encounter with the security forces at Tamakari area in the West Tripura district.

Tripura Police rescues a civilian, Kamala Kanta Debbarma, from militants’ confinement at a forest near Malirai Debbarma Para under Kamalpur police station in the Dhalai district.

One suspected NLFT militant, Biswamohan Tripura, is arrested from a hut near Purnaron Rouja Para under Longthorai Valley police station in the Dhalai district along with one loaded country-made gun.

September 26

One ATTF collaborator, Ranjit Debbarma, is arrested from Basantapara under Mungiakami police station in the West Tripura district, on charges of serving a extortion notice to the villagers.

September 27

An encounter occurs between the NLFT militants and security force (SF) personnel at Patlongjoypara under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. During the subsequent search operation, four Borok National Council of Tripura (BNCT) militants, Lankajoy Reang, Nimanjoy Reang, Ganga Rai Reang and Britta Ram Reang, are arrested and three improvised country made guns are recovered. However six other militants, Dharam Reang, Alajoy Reang, Padarai Reang, Thomas Uchai, Santosh Debbarma and Jhan Jamatia, managed to escape from the incident site.

September 28

A group of suspected militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT attack the residence of one Prajapati Nama Sudra at Asha Purna Roaja Para under Salema police station of Dhalai district. However, no casualty is reported.

Two NLFT cadres, Tangsa Tripura and Malin Debbarma, are arrested from Mogpara under Gandacherra police station in the Dhalai district.

September 29

Ranjit Debbarma, ‘president’ of the ATTF, has stated in an online interview to a Website that the NLFT and ATTF are operating jointly. "The present leadership of NLFT is running the organization along correct lines. This has made it possible for us to work together. As of now our relations are very good", Debbarma said. "TPDF (political wing of the ATTF) and NLFT are different organizations; their main objective is one and the same - restoration of Tripura´s sovereign independence. Some leaders of the NLFT were self-centred and promoted selfish interests. They were not genuine revolutionaries. That leadership has gone now," he added.

October 4

The Borok National Council of Tripura (BNCT) is reportedly carrying out a fresh recruitment drive in the Kanchanpur and Longthorai valleys. About 42 tribal youths were recruited from Mrityunjoypara, Sarbajoypara, Joymonipara and Bhandarima under Kanchanpur subdivision in the North Tripura district. Militants of the BNCT are reportedly operating under the behest of the NLFT.

One NLFT militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Ram Bahadur Reang, surrendered before the Tripura States Rifles personnel at Subhash Nagar headquarters under Kanchanpur sub-division in the North Tripura district.

Three cadres belonging to the NLFT – Biswamohan Debabarma faction, Dushanjoy Tripura, Santi Joy Tripura and Phirak Tripura, surrendered at Bairagi Dukan.

October 14

At least six persons, including a woman, are wounded in a bomb blast triggered at Gandacherra town in the Dhalai district.

October 15

Seven persons are injured in a bomb explosion, suspected to have been triggered by the militants at Gandacherra police station limits in the Dhalai district.

October 17

The NLFT militants abducted one civilian, Sudhanshu Nath, from Barcherra area under Kanchanpur subdivision in the North Tripura district.

Two militants of the NLFT- Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Dipen Tripura and Dharmendra Reang, surrendered along with two country-made guns at Chhawmanu in the Dhalai district.

October 21

At least nine leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist party, including Sabita Debbarma, chairperson of the Paschim Kunjaban Village Committee, are assaulted by the ATTF militants at Rambabu Bazaar under Khowai police station in the West Tripura district. Tripura Police said that an ATTF leader, Ripan Debbara, and his associates are involved in the incident. The militants attacked the villagers for demanding a security camp at Rambabu Bazaar.

October 24

A batch of 135 cadres of the NLFT is being imparted guerrilla training at a hide-out in Bangladesh. Two NLFT militants, Sajanrai Reang and Swarna Reang, who surrendered before the security forces at Manikpur in the Dhalai district on October 22, revealed the information that the rigorous training of the fresh batch is almost completed and ‘passing out parade’ is likely to be held by November. They have also revealed that 27 cadres of the batch will be sent to Karachi in Pakistan for specialized training that to be imparted by designated officers of the Pakistani external intelligence agency, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Both the surrendered cadres also confessed that they are imparted arms training in Hongkong.

October 28

Security forces arrested one ATTF militant, identified as Subi Debbarma, during a combing operation in an interior part of the Radhapur police station under West Tripura district.

Two NLFT militants, Rambajoy Reang alias Rojung and Biranjoy Reang alias Bikhlai, surrendered before the SFs at Hrangkhal Para under Teliamura police station in the Dhalai district. One 9-mm revolver with 6 live rounds and two 36 HE Grenade are deposited by them.

October 31

Security forces arrested three militants belonging to the Borok National Council of Tripura, Lalchina Reang, Lalsang Zuala and Ajindra Reang, at Gachirampara in the North Tripura district. One FM radio and INR 4,300 in cash were recovered from their possession.

Two militants belonging to the NLFT, Adhi Mohan Tripura and Sankar Debbarma, were arrested by the SFs during two separate raids at Damcherra and Jirania in the West Tripura district.

November 2

Security forces, in a search operation, arrested two Borok National Council of Tripura cadres, Nilmani Reang and Gachiram Reang, from Champarai under Ganganagar police station in the Dhalai district. Other member of the group, identified as Hatarai Reang, however, managed to escape. Three country-made guns and gun powder was recovered from them.

One NLFT cadre, identified as Haitarai Debbarma of Belapur under Ranirbazar police station, surrendered along with five rounds of SLR before the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Subash Debbarma, at Ganganagar in the same district.

November 4

Security forces during a search operation arrested three NLFT-BM faction cadres, identified as Rajesh Deb Barma, Nil Kanta Deb Barma and Rabindra Deb Barma, from the outskirts of Jam Tilla village in the West Tripura district. Sources revealed that the three militants had been intimidating and coercing the people of West Tripura district to support NLFT-BM faction against their will.

November 8

Security forces arrested two NLFT militants from the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Raban Debbarma and Surendra Debbarma, from a remote place under Champahowar police station in the West Tripura district.

November 9

Security forces arrested one ATTF militant, Nantu Debbarma alias Sanjib, from the remote Govinda Sardar Para village under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district.

One NLFT cadre from the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Sudhan Debbarma of Kartik para, was arrested from the West Tripura district.

November 11

Krishna Bhakta Malsum, a linkman of an unidentified militant group, is lynched to death by a group of villagers of Lailakbari in the Dhalai district. However, his associate managed to escape from the incident site. The villagers alleged that the deceased and the other accused visited Lailakbari on October 29 and distributed subscription notices on behalf of a militant group.

Two ATTF militants, identified as Samir Debbarma and Ratish Debbarma, surrendered to the Sub Divisional Police Officer under Khowai sub division in the West Tripura district. .

November 18

Assam Rifles personnel arrested one militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, Nibedhan Reang, from the Kanchanpur area in the North Tripura district. .

The Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, alleged that the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura is nothing but a mask of an underground outfit and said that it could do nothing without help from the militant group.

November 19

Security forces arrested three BNCT militants, Ranjit Reang alias Lading, Taksila Reang and Ubajoy Reang, from a village under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. One .22 revolver with 2 rounds of 9-mm and one Khukri were recovered from their possession.

November 23

Police personnel arrested two BNCT militants, identified as Dhaniram Reang and Briguram Reang, from Naising Para and Tulamani Para under Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district. One locally made gun, torch light, gun powder approx-50 grams and iron pieces were recovered from them.

November 24

Assam Rifles personnel in a counter-insurgency operation killed three militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT at Dagmabari under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district. They were identified as Rajmohan Jamatia alias Raima of Teliamura, Baksikia Jamatia of Kamalpur and Shalsi Debbarma. Three AK-56 rifles, seven AK magazines, a grenade, 231 rounds of ammunition, two explosive detonators and some incriminating documents were recovered from the incident site.

Five NLFT militants, Amrit Sadhan Jamatia, Mahenjoy Reang, Pabiram Reang, Abhiram Reang and Manindra Reang, surrendered before the Assam Rifles personnel at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district along with two firearms.

November 26

Three ATTF militants, identified as Ram Debbarma of Sambhu Rampara, Sukumar Debbarma of Kebal Sadhupara and Bidhu Debbarma of Birchu Thakurpara, along with two grenades surrendered before the Sub Divisional Police Officer of Khowai in the West Tripura district.

Two militants belonging to the NLFT, Ratna Hajury Jamatia of Bastavmura under Takarjala police station and Sunil Jamatia of Hataikachakpara under Takarjala police station, surrendered to the Deputy Superintendent of Police at Raishyabari in the Dhalai district. They deposited 68 rounds of `303 rifle to the police.

November 28

Police personnel recovered the dead body of a NLFT militant, identified as Surendra Debbarma of Jaglung Bari, from a pond at Dagamabari under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district.

Police arrested one militant belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Karmajoy Reang of Thali Bari, under Taidu police station in the South Tripura district.

December 1

The Tripura Director General of Police, K. T. D. Singh, said that the outlawed terrorist groups of the State are still maintaining more than 30 hideouts in Bangladesh from where they are infiltrating armed cadres into Tripura by taking advantage of the porous Eastern border of the State. "The number of hideouts has not been reduced despite assurance of taking tough stand and only one temporary camp has reportedly been relocated," he added.

December 4

NLFT militants abducted two persons, identified as Shakti Rishidas and Brajendra Das, at gunpoint in the Dhalai district. Both of them are residents of Dalucherra village under Salema police station, and were abducted when they went to graze cattle near the Longtarai hill range.

Security forces arrested three militants of the BNCT, Krishnamohan Reang, Dhananjay Reang and Gunadhar Reang, from the Laikhand area under Kanchanpur subdivision in the North Tripura District.

December 5

Four persons, including two drivers of private vehicles, were abducted by suspected BNCT militants at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district. However, one driver managed to escape from the militants’ captivity.

Two persons possessing firearms were arrested by police during a search operation at Chankhala in the West Tripura district.

December 8

Four militants of the ATTF surrendered before the security forces at Kamanmura under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district. They were identified as Surya Debbarma, Maharam Debbarma, Binan Debbarma and Ranandra Debbarma. According to Police, the surrendered militants were wanted in extortion cases in several villages under Jirania and Champaknagar area of the district.

December 10

Two militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as, Santilal Tripura alias Sathai and Mrinal Debbarma alias Munwi surrendered before the security forces at the Tripura State Rifles Post under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district. Police said that both the militants were escaped from their base hideouts in Bangladesh with their wives and expressed their desire with the security personnel to give up insurgency.

Two militants, one from the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Sanjit Kumar Jamatia and another belonging to the ATTF, Monoranjan Debbarma, surrendered before the security forces in Khasiamangal area of Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. They also deposited two revolvers with five live rounds of ammunition.

December 10

Two militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Santilal Tripura alias Sathai and Mrinal Debbarma alias Munwi, surrendered before the security forces at the Tripura State Rifles Post under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district.

Two militants, one from the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Sanjit Kumar Jamatia, and another belonging to the ATTF Monoranjan Debbarma, surrendered before the security forces in the Khasiamangal area of Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district.

Militants of the BNCT abducted four workers engaged in the erection of barbed wire fencing along the India-Bangladesh border at Tlangsang under Vangmun police station in the North Tripura district.

Two NLFT militants, Biswarai Debbarma and Shyamal Debbarma, surrendered before the Assistant Commandant of Tripura State Rifles (10th Battalion) at Murabari Post in the West Tripura District. They also deposited one grenade and 13 rounds of bullets.

Two BNCT militants, identified as Jaksha Kumar Tripura and Barunjoy Tripura, surrendered before the security forces at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district.

December 15

A group of BNCT militants abducted a villager, identified as Damodhar Chakma, at gunpoint from Upanbali Para under Longthorai Valley subdivision in the Dhalai district.

Two ATTF militants, Santi Debbarma and his brother Kishore Debbarma, were arrested by security forces at Madhya Bagbari under Sidhai police station in the West Tripura district.

December 16

The Tripura government announced a special rehabilitation package for surrendered militants in the State. Only the surrendered militants, who have not yet received assistance from the central government, will be covered under the scheme. In the first phase, a total of 1456 militants, who had joined the mainstream before year 1998, will be rehabilitated through existing schemes of the Tribal Welfare department, while the remaining surrendered militants will be rehabilitated in a phased manner. However, leaders of surrendered militants claimed that altogether 6000 militants of different groups had surrendered to the security forces before 1998 and they did not get any assistance from the government.

December 26

Five BNCT militants and collaborators are arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Hazacharra and Naisingpara area of the Kanchapur Reang camps in the North Tripura district. They were identified as Rahela Reang, Dhuram Reang, Raviram Reang, Dabit Reang and Nagiram Reang.

Director General of Police K.T.D. Singh stated that, "Terrorism in Tripura is now under control." Compared to 152 civilians killed in insurgency-related violence in 2000, the death toll in 2007 stands at only 19, he said. The number of extremist-related incidents fell from 449 in 2000 to 102 in 2007. Similarly, abductions have reduced from 542 in 2000 to 58 in 2007, the police chief stated.

December 27

Two NLFT militants, Pijush Debbarma and Birendra Debbarma, were arrested at Aidangkur, a remote village under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district.

December 31

A tribal leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist, identified as Chandra Mohan Debbarma, is shot dead by two militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT at Naksirai Para under Kalyanpur police station in the West Tripura district.

A leader of the ruling CPI-M, identified as Chandra Mohan Debbarma, was shot dead by two militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT at Naksirai Para under Kalyanpur police station in the West Tripura district.
