Tripura Timeline - Year 1997

January 4

Two security force personnel are killed and three others sustain injuries in an attack by the Tripura Resurrection Army (TRA) near Raisyabari in the Dhalai district.

January 31

Unidentified tribal militants kill six non-tribals and injure 20 others in a predawn attack at Taidu Bazar in the South Tripura district.

February 5

140 Tripura Resurrection Army (TRA) cadres, including its ‘supreme commander’ Dhananjoy Reang, surrender at Korbok near the India-Bangladesh border along with 36 country-made guns, two country-made rifles, eight country-made pistols and two communication devices.

February 12

All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) terrorists kill 17 non-tribals and injure 20 others and also set ablaze 40 houses in a raid at Tharul Bachai Village in the West Tripura district.

February 15

Unidentified militants raid two villages and kill 12 persons, including nine at Ramchandraghat and three at Gangabasti in the West Tripura district.

March 8

77 Tiger Liberation Organisation (TLO) militants, including its ‘commander’ Gucharan Debbarma, surrender at Mungabari in the West Tripura district.

March 8

11 NLFT terrorists are arrested along with arms and ammunition from a hideout at Nagrai in the South Tripura district.

March 8

Seven ATTF cadres are arrested from Burburia area of Amarpur sub-division in South Tripura.

March 13

Ninety-eight militants, including 47 Tripura National Sengkrak Force (TNSF), 14 Tripura Liberation Force (TLF) and five Tripura Tribal Youth Force (TTYF) cadres, surrender at Gandacherra in Dhalai district.

March 16

Tripura Government rejects ATTF proposal for talks in a third country but offers to negotiate without pre-conditions under the provisions of the Indian Constitution.

March 29

The Union Government proscribes the ATTF and NLFT under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, for a period of two years.

May 7

18 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a policeman are killed and four others are injured in an ambush by NLFT terrorists at Khumulung in the South Tripura district.

May 17

Five tribal villagers, including four relatives of a surrendered militant, are killed by the ATTF at Sabang Shanti Sadar Para under Kalyanpur Police Station jurisdiction in the West Tripura district.

May 28

Three persons are killed and another is abducted by the ATTF at Sarbong Market under Birjing Police Station jurisdiction in the South Tripura district.

June 4

Unidentified tribal terrorists kill five non-tribals and injure two others at a village in the Seven-mile point area under Teliamura police station limits in the West Tripura district.

June 10

NLFT terrorists kill 18 persons, including nine security force personnel of the Territorial Army and Ground Reserve Engineering Force (GREF), in an ambush at Chamanu village in the Dhalai district.

June 13

ATTF Chief Ranjit Debbarma in a statement threatens to resume its "Operation Roukhala" to evict ‘foreigners’ from the State starting July 1.

July 3

NLFT terrorists kill two persons, injure seven others and loot Rupees 8 Lakh from a bank at Monpathar in the South Tripura district.

July 12

31 Tripura Tribal Youth Force (TTYF) terrorists surrender at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district.

August 1

Three police personnel are killed and ten others sustain injuries in an ambush by the NLFT in the Natanbari hill tract area of North Tripura district.

September 13

Four ATTF terrorists are killed in a clash with NLFT cadres at Bhandarima in the North Tripura district.

September 23

17 persons and five ATTF cadres are killed as ATTF ambushes a police patrol party at Dagabil in the West Tripura district.

October 27

NLFT terrorists kill four Bangladesh Rifles personnel during an encounter at Rema Tea Garden inside Bangladesh territory, adjacent to Khowai town in the West Tripura district.

October 29

NLFT terrorists kill three persons who were abducted earlier on October 19 from Konarrampara in the West Tripura district.

November 11

11 civilians and nine security force personnel are killed in an explosion triggered by the NLFT near Raishyabari in the Dhalai district.
