Two National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) terrorists are killed in separate encounters in the Jamircherra area under Manu police station jurisdiction in Dhalai district and Kunjabiharipara village under Jirania police station limits in the West Tripura district.

January 1

At least 53 surrendered cadres of the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and NLFT are rehabilitated at the Lachi rehabilitation centre under Shantir Bazar police station limits in the South Tripura district.

Tripura Director General of Police G M Srivastava says, "there were camps of insurgents of the North East in Bangladesh." He also says that the terrorists "are being backed by the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and Bangladesh Army."

A villager is beaten to death and six women are sexually assaulted by a group of NLFT terrorists at Paisyaranpara village under Chhawmanu police station limits in the Dhalai district.

March 13

A CPI-M supporter and three of his family members are killed by a group of ATTF terrorists at Lembucherra in the Dhalai district.

March 16

Two NLFT terrorists are killed and another is arrested following an encounter with the Tripura State Rifles personnel at Chiching Chera under Manu police station limits in the Dhalai district.

March 20

ATTF terrorists kill five persons, including an assistant manager of a brick kiln and four labourers, and injure two others in Champaknagar under Jirania police station area in the West Tripura district.

April 2

At least 26 terrorists, including 14 belonging to the Biswamohan faction and nine of the Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of NLFT and three affiliated to the ATTF, surrender before the Additional Director General of Police, Pranay Sahay, in the State capital Agartala.

April 3

Two ATTF terrorists are killed during an internecine clash with the NLFT at Anath Chowdhury Para in the West Tripura district.

April 13

ATTF terrorists kill four Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and injure two others during an ambush at Subolkobrapara in the West Tripura district.

April 15

The Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of NLFT signs a memorandum with representatives of the State and Central Government in New Delhi, agreeing to ‘cessation of hostilities’ for a period of six months beginning April 15. The agreement was signed by the Additional Secretary of Union Home Ministry, Commissioner Tribal Affairs (Tripura) and Nayanbasi Jamatiya.

April 22

The President of Tripura People’s Democratic Front (TPDF), political wing of the ATTF, Ranjit Debbarma, says that he would come to the negotiating table if the Union Government fulfilled three preconditions The first precondition was that those who had entered Tripura after 1949 and whose names did not figure in the voters’ list of 1952 should be declared foreigners. Secondly, the issue of sovereignty should be a point of discussion during the peace talks and thirdly, a representative of the United Nations would remain present during the talks.

April 28

Four NLFT cadres are arrested from Singlu in the Jampui hill range of North Tripura district.

May 6

72 terrorists of the NLFT, including 22 female cadres, led by General Secretary Mantu Koloy surrender before the Tripura Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahay in the capital Agartala. The other top ‘commanders’ who laid down arms include self-styled vice president Kamini Debbarma, ‘finance secretary’ Bishnuprasad Jamatia, ‘assistant finance secretary’ Dhanu Koloy, ‘chief of army staff’ Benoy Debbarma and ‘deputy army chief’ Sanjiv Debbarma.

May 17

Six BSF personnel, including an Assistant Commandant, are killed in an ambush laid by terrorists of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT at Thalcherra-Gobindabari road in the Dhalai district.

Security forces arrest six NLFT-N terrorists from a hideout at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district.

A security force personnel and a NLFT-B terrorist killed in an encounter at Gamanjaypara in the West Tripura district.

Nayanbashi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT threatens to pull out of the agreement if their demands were not met. Addressing a press conference in Agartala, the outfit’s leader Ananta Debbarma says, "We will be forced to take up arms afresh unless the state government fulfils its responsibilities."

ATTF calls for a 10-day general strike, beginning August 23, in the four police station areas of Sidhai, Jirania, Kalyanpur and Khowai in the West Tripura district demanding immediate withdrawal of security forces deployed for counter insurgency operations.

ATTF terrorists raid the house of Hrishamoni Debbarma, chairman of a local body, at West Belcherra in the West Tripura district and abduct his 18-year-old son.

ATTF terrorists attack a police camp at Noabadi in the West Tripura district. No casualty was reported in the incident.

An ATTF terrorist, identified as Bimal Debbarma, is killed in an encounter at Champabari under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district.

A suspected ATTF terrorist, identified as Khegendra Debbarma, is killed in an encounter with the troops at Haticherra under Khowai police station.

Four NLFT terrorists, including an ‘area commander’ and a self-styled lieutenant, identified as Jabamohan Jamatia, who carried a cash award of Rupees 1.5 lakh on his head and another terrorist collaborator surrender at the Birganj police station in the South Tripura district.

Suspected ATTF terrorists kill a civilian near Krishi Dibbodaya Kendra in the West Tripura district.

A terrorist of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Naresh Debbarma, is killed in an encounter with the police at Ranasinghpara under Champahawar police station.

The cease-fire between the Government and the Nayanbashi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT is extended by another three months.

Tripura police arrests Tripura State Rifles (TSR) deserter Rahid Mian who had fled his camp in Sharmun range of Dharmanagar subdivision in North Tripura district on September 23, 2003 after killing three TSR personnel.

NLFT terrorists abducted two truck drivers, Gobinda Debnath and Rasamay Lodh from Mayakumar Roajapara in Dhalai district.

NLFT militants criminally assault two tribal girls in the Rajkandi village under Kumarghat police station of North Tripura district. The militants also ransack the entire village and loot the villagers off their valuables.

November 23

Three ATTF terrorists identified as Sankar Debbarma, Sujit Debbarma and Swadesh Debbarma surrender before the Inspector General (IG) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), K.D. Pachauri at the CRPF headquarters in capital Agartala.

Meanwhile, two tea garden labourers abducted by NLFT terrorists from Sarojini Tea Estate in North Tripura district on November 15 are released at an unspecified place.

November 24

Terrorists of the NLFT abducted two tribal youths, Ranju Kumar Debbarma and Bibhisan Debbarma from Bilascherra Panchayat area of Dhalai district.

November 26

The ATTF militants assault 12 tribal villagers of Sarat Chowdhurypara village in West Tripura district after they refused to abide by the outfit’s ‘diktat’ for protesting against the setting up of a security force camp in the area.

November 27

NLFT militant Bipin Reang killed in an encounter with the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Kinapara under Raisyabari police station in Dhalai district.

November 28

A tribal girl is killed in crossfire between TSR personnel and BNLF militants near Tharma village in North Tripura district .

The BSF personnel arrest two NLFT terrorists Tarun Debbarma and Sanjit Debbarma from Bogabil area in West Tripura district.

The security forces destroy an illegal gun-manufacturing factory at an unspecified place in Tripura and arrested three BNCT rebels.

December 2

Ten militant outfits operating in the north-eastern region have been proscribed under the ‘Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Bill, 2004’ tabled in the Lok Sabha in New Delhi. These include the two groups’ active in Tripura, the NLFT and ATTF.

December 11

Terrorists belonging to the NLFT are reported to have killed the wife and daughter of a local tribal leader at Kachubari under Champahawar Police Station limits in West Tripura.

December 13

Replying to a question in the State Legislative Assembly, the Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, states that at least 69 persons were killed and 59 others sustained injuries in the 179 incidents of terrorist violence in different parts of Tripura in the past 11 months. 83 civilians were abducted by the different terrorist outfits of which 40 abducted persons returned home safely, he added. On counter-terrorism operations, Sarkar informed that the troops killed 54 hardcore terrorists of different outfits while 88 of them were arrested and approximately 200 cadres surrendered thus far.

December 17

The National Liberation Front of Tripura-Nayanbashi (NLFT-N) signs a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) with the Union Government and the State Government of Tripura to surrender arms and ammunition. However, separate reports suggested that the MoS was signed in the absence of the chief of the outfit, Nayanbashi Jamatiya, who has opted out of the peace process and returned to his base in Bangladesh. The outfit had signed a cessation of hostility agreement with the Union Government in April 2004 and held three meetings with the Government representatives so far.

December 25

138 cadres of the National Liberation Front of Tripura-Nayanbashi Jamatiya surrender before the Tripura Governor, D.N. Sahay, at the State Police Training Centre in capital Agartala.

December 28

Suspected terrorists belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the outlawed NLFT kill at least 16 Territorial Army personnel and injure three others during an ambush at Agumabari in the South Tripura district.

December 31

In a notification, the Tripura Government asks NLFT-N 'chief' Nayanbashi Jamatia to immediately surrender or face consequences.
