A
number of Tamil militant organisations have come into existence
in Sri Lanka, over the years. Some of these have withered away
while the others have come over-ground to join the democratic
mainstream consequent to a renunciation of militant means. The
Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is currently the only active militant organisation.
At
their formation, all these groups vowed to achieve a separate
Tamil Eelam (State) through militant means. Those that have joined
the democratic mainstream have reconciled to the idea of a united
Sri Lanka.

operated at one point of time or the other.
