A
journalist attached to a Tamil language newspaper
Sudar Oli was shot dead by an unidentified
gunman at Trincomalee on January 24-morning.
Military sources said that political columnist
of Sudar Oli, 37-year-old S. Rajan,
was shot dead while he was on his way to work.
Meanwhile,
explosions were reported from five places
in the suburbs of capital Colombo between
8 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on January 24. Army sources
said explosions occurred at Borella, Nugegoda,
Mount Lavinia, Kiribathgoda and Wattala without
causing any damage.
President
Mahinda Rajapakse on January 24 discussed
with the Norwegian Minister for International
Development and key facilitator Erik Solheim
issues relating to the "possibility of resuming
negotiations" with the Liberation Tigers of
Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The two-hour talks were held a day ahead of
Solheim's visit to Kilinochchi to meet with
LTTE chief Velupillai Prabhakaran.
