Maoists blow up cell tower in Andhra Pradesh

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres allegedly blasted the BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) cell tower at Darakonda area under GK Veedhi Police Station limits in Visakhapatnam District on October 11, reports The Hindu. Police suspected that a group of armed Maoists, including militia members, moved into the Darakonda area and blasted the equipment of cell tower to disturb the communication system and fled from the spot. Locals said that the incident took place between 9.30 p.m. and 9.45 p.m. and now the mobile phones in the area are down.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Police (DGP) s of four Maoist-affected States - Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh - discussed about various issues related to movement of Maoists, ganja transportation and other issues here at a resort near Bhogapuram mandal (administrative division) in Vizianagaram District on October 10, reports The Times of India. The DGPs' reportedly discussed about precautionary measures to be taken as the Naxals [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] are gearing up for the first anniversary of the martyrs of Ramaguda encounter. The meeting reportedly concentrated on the LWEs and coordination between the States, besides discussions on present scenario of the Naxal movement.

Separately, the CPI-Maoist extended its support to academic Kancha Ilaiah in the backdrop of threats hurled at him following a book written by him on Vaishya community and gave a call to people and democrats to stand by him, reports The Hindu on October 11. The CPI-Maoist condemned the threats as undemocratic saying people who had objections were free to present their arguments. The threats against Prof. Ilaiah were part of a larger conspiracy by Sangh Parivar, State and Central Governments to curb voices against superstitious beliefs and unscientific thinking, a press release by CPI-Maoistís official spokesman Jagan stated.
