Police accede to Maoist demand of withdrawing nine camps in West Bengal

Bowing to pressure from the People’s Committee against Police Atrocities, the Midnapore West district police on November 27 withdrew all nine police camps from Ramgarh and Lalgarh, reports The Statesman. The Committee had sent a deputation to the Ramgarh Police yesterday and demanded that the police camps be withdrawn within 24 hours or they would confine police officers in the camps. However, the Superintendent of Police Rajesh Singh said the decision to withdraw the camps was taken earlier by the Government to ensure school children could continue their studies (there were three police camps at schools) and also for their posting in Jhargram municipality for the civic poll on November 30.
