Woman Maoist cadre arrested in Odisha

Police claimed to have arrested a suspected woman cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)Maoist), identified as Rebati Nayak, from a forest in Naktideula area in Sambalpur District on an unspecified date, reports The Hindu. Police sources said Rebati is an active cadre of Sambalpur-Deogarh-Sundargarh Zonal committee of CPI-Maoist. A cadre of the outfit since 2003, Rebati has 18 non-bailable warrants pending against her in Sambalpur and Deogarh District. Her husband Bimba Bhoi is also an influential cadre in the same ‘Zonal committee’.

Meanwhile, the Maoists have given a bandh (shut down strike) call in Koraput District on May 16. The Koraput-Srikakulam divisional committee of the CPI-Maoist has given the bandh call. The Maoist division functions under the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC). Daya alias Chemmala Krishnamurthi, ‘secretary’ of Koraput-Srikakulam divisional committee, has sent a letter to newsmen in Koraput District regarding the bandh call. It may be noted that Daya was the key element behind abduction of the Laxmipur Biju Janata Dal Member of Legislative Assembly Jhina Hikaka in Koraput District on March 24. Through the letter written in Telugu, Daya has informed that this bandh call is given to protest against National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and anti-Maoist operations like Operation Green Hunt. Maoists are also demanding withdrawal of Border Security Force (BSF) personnel from Narayanpatna area of Koraput District.

Separately, responding to media queries on May 12, chief minister Naveen Patnaik sought to underplay the Centre's observation on spread of Maoist activity in the State, reports The Times of India. "The allegations are not correct. We will give a reply to the Union government on Monday [May 14]," he said. Official sources said the Government is now preparing a detailed rebuttal to be sent soon.
