Nine extremist outfits active in Assam

The Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and United Muslim Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) were among nine extremist groups currently active in Assam, the Assam Government informed the Legislative Assembly on August 6, according to Indian Express. The other seven outfits included the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). The Assam Forest and Environment Minister Rockybul Hussain, replying on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, stated that apart from the nine outfits, the NSCN-IM too was involved in killing people in the State. The Government, however, did not have the exact number of lethal weapons that these extremist groups had in their possession, Hussain informed. The minister also informed that 39 members of different outfits, excluding the HuM and MULTA, had been killed by security forces in the state between January 2006-7. The outfits together have killed 1,363 people since Gogoi took over as Chief Minister in May 2001.
