Subject: Deployment of observers for Jammu and Kashmir elections.

The Commission held the briefing for the Observers being deployed for the Jammu and Kashmir elections today. The Commission has already deployed 17 special observers in all the 14 districts of the State to observe the implementation of the initiatives taken up by the Commission for ensuring free and fair elections in the State. The special observers have been visiting the State since middle of July 2002.
2. In addition, for observing the election process with the issue of notification for the polls, the Commission is now deploying 30 senior IAS officers and 18 senior IRS, IA&AS and IC&ES officers as Observers in the State. They will be assigned to different districts to cover all assembly segments in the State. Each observer will normally undertake three visits covering the period of nominations, scrutiny, poll and counting.
