Two soldiers killed and nine others injured in bomb blast in Balochistan

Two Security Force (SF) personnel, identified as Lutfullah and Muhammad Riaz were killed and nine others injured in a remote-controlled blast in the Sangsilla area of Dera Bugti District in Balochistan on February 18, reports Daily Times. The Baloch Republican Army (BRA) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, a Police van was partially damaged in another remote-controlled blast in Chatter area of Nasirabad District in Balochistan. No casualties were reported, although the vehicle was partially damaged in the blast.

Death toll in Kurram Agency suicide attack rises to 39

The death toll of February 17 suicide attack that hit Kurmi Bazaar in Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), bordering Afghanistan, on February 18 rose to 39, reports Daily Times. Representatives of Toori tribe-Bangash tribe Qaumi Anjuman presented a list of 39 persons killed as a result of the blast, at a press conference. The death toll rose to 39 after 14 more people died overnight at the hospital, representative of the Qaumi Anjuman said, adding that 26 injured persons are admitted to different hospitals in Parachinar and Peshawar, some of victims’ condition stated to be very critical.

Maoists kill JJP cadre in Jharkhand

Anup Bhuyan, an alleged cadre of Jharkhand Janmukti Parishad, a Left Wing Extremist (LWE) group, was killed by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Latehar District on February 17, reports Zee News. Bhuyan was picked up by the Maoists from his house at Kurungkhata village under Manika Police Station and shot dead, the Police said. The Maoists owned responsibility by leaving a note near the body, which was recovered during the day, accusing him of murder and robbery.

Meanwhile, the Maoists and cadres of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Maoist, exchanged fire for about two hours in the night the same day at Karamtoli in Gumla District, reports Daily Bhaskar. However, there was no report of any casualty yet, the Police said.

Maoists set ablaze earthmoving equipment in Andhra Pradesh

Three hydraulic excavators allegedly set ablaze by a group of cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) at Modingedda in GK Veedhi mandal (administrative unit) in Visakhapatnam District on February 18, reports The Hindu. The equipment was being used for laying a 6-km road between Thotakonda and Mesithotavanipalem. The Maoists left posters saying that any move to start bauxite mining would result in such reaction from the CPI-Maoist and that the Government must immediately stop the Green Hunt Operation against Maoists.

Maoist activities across Jangalmahal brought under control, says Union Home Minister P Chidambaram

Stating that Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) activity in the State's Jangalmahal region has been considerably brought under control after the new government came to power in West Bengal, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said on February 18 that both the Central and the State Government will work together to eliminate left wing extremism from the State, reports The Hindu. “I think after the new government took over, the people of West Bengal should readily appreciate and acknowledge that the Naxal problem that was affecting the Jangalmahal region of the State has been controlled to a substantial extent,” he said at the inauguration of the Regional Hub of National Security Guard (NSG) at Badu in the State's North 24 Parganas District. Chidambaram attributed the success in combating the Maoist problem to co-operation between the Central and the State Government.

SIMI-backed political party, PFI, becoming a major internal security, alarms NIA

The Pioneer reported on February 19, that Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) backed Popular Front of India (PFI) is fast becoming a major internal security headache for the government. According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) sources, “This could make it the biggest internal security threat by 2014 parliamentary polls if its growth is unchecked”. The radical outfit recently shifted its headquarters from Kerala to Delhi.

Army integration in final stage, states UCPN-Maoist Chairman 'Prachanda'

The United Communist Party of Nepal (UCPN-Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ claimed on February 19, that the process of integration of Maoist People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combatants has reached its final stage, according to The Himalayan Times.

According to the ‘non-paper’ proposal which, he said, is being prepared, as per the direction of Special Committee (for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants), the ranks of PLA inductees will be determined as per the standard norms of National Army.
