On April 16, Police Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) arrested a local leader of the militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Sanowar Hossain from Choto Chandpur area under Nazipur municipality of Patnitala upazila (sub-district) in Naogaon District, reports Prothom Alo. The militant had been hiding under the guise of Abdullah for the last 10 years and was working as a mason. On 25 November 2019, Chapainawabganj’s additional district and sessional judge court had sentenced Sanowar and two other accused to death for their crimes.

The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Police arrested Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) ameer ‘chief’, Mohammad Shafiqur Rahman from his home in Bashundhara area of Dhaka city, for what officers said was his direct link to a militant organisation, The Daily Star reports on December 14. Shafiqur has links to a newly formed militant outfit named Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, said CTTC Chief Mohammad Asaduzzaman. Shafiqur's son Rafat Chowdhury, currently in jail, travelled to the hill tracts with 11 others to receive training on arms from Kuki-Chin National Front, he said, adding that Shafiqur paid for the trip. Rafat and his associates held meetings at Shafiqur's house in Sylhet and conducted "recruitment activities" for the militant outfit. Before joining the new outfit Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya, Rafat was an active operative of militant outfit Ansar Al Islam, said CTTC Chief.

Two members of a newly formed militant outfit, Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindal Sharqiya have been arrested in two separate locations of Dhaka, the capital city Sylhet in Sylhet District, said the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) on December 22, reports The Daily Star. The arrestees identified as Saiful Islam Tuhin, a former madrasa (Islamic Seminary) student in Sylhet, and Nayeem Hossain, a student of Agriculture Training Institute in Dhaka’s Agargaon, earlier averted a crackdown by the law enforcers in Bandarban, said CTTC unit officials. The arrestees stayed at different camps in Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) for about a year with other accomplices. Separatist group Kuki National Front (KNF) members and the militant group's local associates trained 12 of them for a month. They were given training on firearms, said the CTTC official.

Five operatives of newly formed militant outfit Jama'atul Ansar Fil Hindai Sharqiya were arrested from two separate places, Narayanganj District’s Sonargaon and Gulistan area of Dhaka city, on December 4, reports Daily Star. The arrestees are: Sakib Mahmud, 27; Golam Sarowar, 25; Forhad Hossain, 22; Murad Hossain, 21 and Wasiqur Rahman alias Nayem, 28. They were planning to kill a member of a law enforcement agency before they were arrested. The outfit recruited three to four members who would have executed the plan in Gaibandha under the leadership of an armed and trained member. Sakib was the trained leader of the team. The operative was responsible for the outfit's activities in Gaibandha. He is the nephew of Shamin Mahfuz, the advisor and coordinator of new recruits, according to official source. Moniruzzaman Kohinur (71), was arrested at his Elephant Road home in Dhaka city while Alamgir Hossain (70), was picked up from his home from Gopalpur upazila in Tangail District. Matiur Rahman, deputy director of the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), said Police handed the arrestees to the tribunal. Matiur said Kohinur from Gopalpur's Beradakuri village was the commander of Al-Badr in Tangail. He surrendered with the Pakistanis after the war. He was taken to India as a prisoner of war. Kohinur later went to Pakistan. From there, he moved to Japan with a Pakistani passport. After returning to Bangladesh in 1990s, he started living in Dhaka. He further said Alamgir, who hails from Chatutia village in Gopalpur, was involved in mass killings by the Pakistani occupation army as one of its local collaborators.

All the arrestees were aware that Amin was accused in the case filed with Kotwali Police Station on November 20. Edi Amin, who directly assisted the snatching, surrendered at a Dhaka court on November 27. Before that had taken shelter in three different areas of Dhaka to evade law enforcers. He first took shelter in the house of his sister, Khodeza Akhter Lipi, in Khilgaon area on November 22. Then he went to Bijoynagar area on November 23 and stayed at the house of his father-in-law, Mohammad Nasir Miah Faruq, till November 24. And finally, he went to Basabo area on the morning of November 25 and took shelter in the house of one Tanvir Hossain till November 26. All three were arrested on November 28. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a fugitive extremist leader, Saiful who has been on the run for 30 years after being sentenced to life in multiple cases from Rupganj area of Narayanganj District, tbsnews.net reports on September 10. According to RAB, a group of extremists looted the weapons stored in Gurdaspur Police Station of Natore, killed a Constable and snatched an arrested extremist from the Police Station custody in 1987. In these incidents, Saiful was accused of robbery and murder cases in absentia.
