Citing official sources, media reports added that the IED exploded just before the commando team reached the spot. The terrorists also fired indiscriminately at them. However, after a brief encounter, the terrorists fled the area. There were no reports of causalities so far.

A National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) ‘sergeant’ identified as Kamlesh Basumatary was killed in an encounter at Jharbari village, under Serfanguri police station-limits, Kokrajhar district on February 27. Reports said security force (SF) personnel intercepted the slain terrorist and his colleagues when the group had gone to collect ration and medicines for their camps located in Bhutan. In a bid to flee they lobbed hand grenades on SFs and opened fire. SFs killed a terrorist in retaliatory fire, while his associates escaped.

Suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) terrorists attacked an oil storage depot and a gas pipeline in Assam’s Tinsukia district, on March 8. Reports said Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC’s) a five million-litre petrol tank at Digboi refinery caught fire in the explosion triggered by the terrorists. The fire could not have been controlled when reports last came in. Also, damage of property could not be immediately assessed. Another blast, again triggered by the ULFA terrorists damaged an Oil India Limited pipeline carrying gas from its Duliajan unit to North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) power grid at Kathalguri. The pipeline was later repaired and gas supply was also restored. According to Tinsukia Deputy Commissioner (DC), B N Das rocket launchers might have been used in the attack. ULFA ‘commander-in-chief’ Paresh Baruah reportedly called up the local media in Guwahati to claim responsibility for the attack. No injuries were reported in the twin blasts.

The 14th battalion of CRPF post at Saikot and the 110th CRPF battalion at Leimatak in Churachandpur district, security post of 28th Assam Rifles battalion at Kheba Ching in Thoubal district, the 76th Border Security Force (BSF) battalion post at Moirang Khucou in Bishnupur district, and the 37th Assam Rifles battalion at Moreh in Chandel district were reportedly attacked. According to official sources, the terrorists used rocket launchers, powerful grenades, mortars and sophisticated weapons in these attacks. According to reports, a group of at least 12 ULFA terrorists first hijacked a bus and forcibly took it to the crude oil storage facility at the incident site. The patrolling team of the CISF noticed the terrorists’ movement and an encounter ensued. The terrorists blew up an empty crude oil tank with a rocket launcher even as two CISF personnel lost their lives in countering the attack. A ULFA terrorist, too, was killed.
