At least 19 persons were killed and 25 others wounded, when explosions were triggered targeting migrant workers in six separate locations in the eastern districts of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia on January 5, reports Times of India. Sibsagar district was also part of the area where explosion caused civilian casualty, according to Assam Tribune. Assam Police suspected involvement of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). The report added that heavily armed ULFA militants attacked two brick kilns, fired indiscriminately on shops and business centres, besides triggering an explosion near a tea garden. "In all the incidents, the ULFA targeted people, most of them daily wage earners and petty traders," a senior police official said. "The death toll could mount as we have reports of some more people injured in remote areas," said Tinsukia district magistrate Absar Hazarika.

The Governor of Goa, S. C. Jamir, survived an assassination attempt on November 24 when his convoy was attacked with improvised explosive device (IED) blasts in the Mokokchung district of Nagaland, according to Times of India. Two security force personnel were injured in the attack, which was the fourth attempt on the life of the former Nagaland Chief Minister. Officials said the attack occurred when Jamir's 30-vehicle convoy was passing near Changki around 6 am (IST). He was coming from his hometown, Mokokchung, and was heading towards the State's commercial hub of Dimapur, the officials added. Sources said four of the six IEDs planted by militants exploded seconds after Jamir's vehicle passed by. Police suspect the attack was the handiwork of NSCN-IM, which had earlier dubbed Jamir as "anti-people and anti-national". However, the Naga outfit denied its involvement and alleged that the attack was "stage-managed". "The life attempt was staged-managed to generate a sympathy wave for Jamir and Congress in Nagaland," an NSCN-IM statement said. In 1993, Jamir was injured in an attack at Nagaland House, New Delhi. Another abortive bid on his life was made in Kohima in 1995. Four years later, he escaped another ambush on the National Highway-39 near Kohima.

Meanwhile, the locomotive and two sleeper coaches of the Kamrup Express were partially damaged in a bomb blast on the tracks between Bokajan and Khatkhati stations in the Karbi Anglong district on December 4-night. Police suspect the hand of the Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA) in the blast. Although police recovered two wires from the blast site, it was not clear whether a timer or a remote-controlled device was used to trigger the crude bomb. The sub-divisional police officer of Bokajan, Satyen Gogoi, said, "The crude bomb was hidden in the ballast on the track. Had it been kept right under the track, the impact would have damaged the track and derailed the train."
