The Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) was exploded through a remote-controlled device when people were celebrating New Year Day around 5.30am. A team of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area before launching a search operation. According to reports the bomb went off around 15 minutes after the Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and a few seconds after Assam Rifles (AR) convoy passed the area. The injured individuals have been identified as Mohammed Alludin Khan, Thongam Leibak-macha, Thon-gam Premchand , Asem Bijoy, Mohammed Ziaur Rehman and Rabina Begum. Two Meghalaya Policemen, identified as Havildar Aldrin Lyngdoh of 3rd Meghalaya Police Battalion (MLP) and Armed Branch Constable Aitom A Sangma of South Garo Hills District executive force (DEF) were killed and three Policemen identified as driver-fireman Medison Sangma, Constable Betherson M Sangma of DEF and 3rd MLP Battalion constable Brething K Sangma were injured in an attack on November 18, when Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants ambushed a Police convoy, after attacking the convoy with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Siju in South Garo Hills District, reports The Shillong Times. The Police were en-route to strengthen Siju Police out post against attack by GNLA. GNLA had recently made public their plans to target Police personnel and officers in retaliation for the Meghalaya government’s alleged refusal to accept their peace talks’ proposal. The Sentinel further adds that Meghalaya Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and the Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandos have been rushed to comb the area. Close to two dozen armed GNLA men are believed to have taken part in the operation. Further, Constable Brething K Sangma, one of the three Police personnel injured in the IED blast was able to pin down the militants and prevent them from looting the weapons by opening fire from a mounted machine gun, despite sustaining splinter injuries, reports The Shillong Times. GNLA is known to dominate the Siju area, reports The Shillong Times.

The injured personnel have been identified as Havildar Bibison Baitha, Battalion Constable (BNC) Karbinath Sangma, BNC Alians B Marak, BNC Dambarth B Marak and driver of the gypsy Riwstarwell Nongklaw. Police personnel numbering ten armed men travelling in a mini truck and a maruti gypsy from the 3rd MLP Battalion headquarters in Jowai, Jaintia Hills, were stocking up their outposts and camps when they came under attack by the armed militants. The two vehicle convoy had just replenished the stock of food items and other essentials at Chokpot (South Garo Hills) for their battalion personnel deployed for counter-insurgency operations and were moving towards Sibbari (West Garo Hills) when the attack took place. Despite the attack, the militants failed to take away any service weapon from the injured personnel since the armed men in the second vehicle acted promptly.

The bomb was planted in a bush along the roadside and the explosion left a half foot deep crater at the roadside. The Sentinel adds that the explosion took place when the two Border Security Force (BSF) vehicles had just crossed the area. Police sources said that the BSF personnel were patrolling the Sawombung area along the Imphal Ukhrul road. When they reached a small bridge one foreign made powerful bomb which was planted under the bridge was detonated using a remote control device.

Two more blasts took place near a petrol pump at Patgaon under Serfanguri Police Station in which three people were injured. The injured were identified as Man Bahadur, Purnima Rai and Chatra Maya.
