Two couriers of the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist) were arrested by a joint squad of Charla Police and the personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during a vehicle checking drive on the outskirts of the Charla Mandal (administrative sub division) headquarters town in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on January 5, reports The Hindu. A bundle of 200-metre cordex wire, 10 pressure cookers, some substances used for making explosive materials, and a tractor-trolley were seized from them. The arrested persons were identified as P Sammaiah (35), and Satyaveni (33), both hailing from Charla. According to the Police, the duo had been working as couriers for the CPI-Maoist Dalam (armed squad) led by the Bhadradri-Kothagudem division ‘secretary’ Azad by providing essential commodities and explosive materials to the ultras operating in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh for the last two years.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couple, identified as Madhukar Chinanna Kodape alias Thuge (42), and his wife, Jamani Mangalu Punam alias Shamala (35), who were allegedly involved in several violent incidents, both carrying a total reward of INR 1 million, were arrested by the Gadchiroli Police from Hyderabad District of Telangana on February 20, reports Telangana Today. The Maoist couple, who have been staying in Gachibowli in Hyderabad for last few years, had reportedly left the CPI-Maoist movement in 2006 and since then been evading arrest. The Police found that Madhukar was working as a watchman in a local security company in the city while Shamala was working in the housekeeping department of a car showroom. The duo had concealed their real identities and attended the work regularly. Madhukar worked in various positions in the CPI-Maoist party and allegedly was involved in 25 serious offences registered against him at various Police Stations in Gadchiroli district, while, Shamala is involved in nine serious offences including a murder. The Gadchiroli Police were on lookout for them for last one year, and on reliable information, a Police team of Gadchiroli Police arrested them from Hyderabad.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) party Sabari Local Organisation Squad (LOS) ‘commander’, identified as Paddam Kosaiah alias Sandeep, who carries a cash reward of INR 400,000 on his head, was arrested by the Police during combing operation in Erraboru Forest area under Cherla Mandal (administrative sub division) in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on February 21, reports Telangana Today. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) training book, 10 gelatin sticks, two detonators, cordex wire, one tiffin box, electric wire, batteries and Maoist literature were seized from his possession. Sandeep of Chennapuram village in the Mandal joined the Maoists in 2017 as 'militia' (people's army of the Maoists) member. Since October 2022 he has been working as the Sabari LOS ‘commander’ and carries a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) weapon. He was involved in the abduction and murder of Kurnapalli deputy Sarpanch (head of the Panchayat, village level local self-Government institution) in Cherla Mandal in August 2022. He was also involved in the murder of Mandal Parishad Territorial Candidate (MPTC) member N Srinivas in July 2019, killing of 17 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnels in an ambush under Chintaguppa Police Station limits in March 2020 and killing of 24 CRPF personnels at Tekulagudem under Tarrem Police Station limits in Chhattisgarh State in April 2021. During interrogation Sandeep confessed to Police that he tried to surrender to Police many times but the Maoist leaders forced him to commit crimes. There were 27 cases booked against him in Telangana, seven cases in Andhra Pradesh and eight cases in Chhattisgarh State.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) Pamed Dalam (armed squad) members, identified as Sodi Kame and Sodi Bandu, and a sympathiser, Sodi Chanti, were arrested by the Police from Paidigudem Forest area on Telangana-Chhattisgarh borders in the Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on March 3, reports Telangana Today. Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineeth G in a statement informed that the arrested Maoists had come to Paidigudem forests to plant landmines to target the Police. 10 gelatin sticks, four electric detonators, 20 metre cordex wire, 50 metre electric wire, a battery and a steel bucket were seized from them. Moreover, Maoists were forcing minors to join the party and they were coming to Telangana in the guise of labourers and living on border areas. They were visiting hospitals for treatment; procuring explosive material and essentials, which were being supplied to Maoists to attack Police in Chhattisgarh. Strict action would be taken against such persons, SP, Vineeth warned.

Eight Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) couriers and sympathisers were arrested during vehicle checking on the outskirts of the Ramachandrapuram village under Venkatapuram Mandal (administrative sub division) in Mulugu District of Telangana on March 20, and some explosive substances were seized from them, reports NDTV. Superintendent of Police (SP), Gaush Alam, said on checking their vehicles, the Police found some explosive substances, metal parts of Improvised Explosive Device (IED), Naxal [Left Wing extremism, LWE] revolutionary literature, and some medicines. On questioning, they told Police that some time ago, they, along with other accused, met CPI-Maoist leader Damodhar and some of the Dalam (armed squad) members for solving their land problems, and they got attracted to the revolutionary ideology of the rebels.

Police arrested a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) Local Organisation Squad (LOS) ‘commander’ identified as Kunjam Ungal alias Pradeep, and its ‘deputy commander’ identified as Musike Raje, from Bhadrachalam town in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on April 18, reports Telangana Today. Ungal had joined the Maoists as a Balala Committee member in 2005 and became a member of Maoist outfit in 2009. Raje also joined the Maoists as a Balala Committee member in 2010 and became Maoist outfit member in 2013. Ungal was accused in killing four Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in an ambush and looting firearms in 2009, killing of 10 CRPF personnel in a bomb blast and looting the arms in 2010, killing of 14 CRPF personnel and looting of arms in an ambush in 2014, besides involving many other violent attacks on Police forces, Superintendent of Police (SP), Vineeth G said. Raje was involved in several incidents of exchange of fire with Police. The Maoist leaders have been forcing minor boys and girls to join their ranks to commit acts of violence. Adivasis have to be wary of Maoists and keep them away from their hamlets, SP, Vineeth noted.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Vineeth G informed that Police seized 500 detonators, 600 slurry sticks, 90 bundles of cordex wire, two motorcycles, a tractor and a pick-up truck from the arrested couriers and ‘militia’ members. The material procured by the arrested at the directions of the Maoist top leadership was used in making landmines, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and rocket launchers to attack Police. Police arrested Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) Pamedu Local Organising Squad (LOS) ‘commander’ identified as Gotta Bujji alias Kamala alias Laxmi (29), at Taliperu Dam in Cherla Mandal (administrative sub division) in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on June 9, and seized explosive material from her, reports Telangana Today. Bujji, a native of Cherpalli village under Bhupalapatnam Police Station in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh, came to the Taliperu Dam area along with other Maoists and ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) members with the intention of killing the Police. The associates of Bujji fled from the spot on noticing the Police. Bujji was recruited as a guard when she was 15 years old in 2008 for the Maoist West Bastar Division National Park Area Committee ‘secretary’ Madhavi. She carried a double-barrel gun working in the National Park Committee from 2008 to 2014, in which she was shifted to South Bastar Division. She was appointed as Pamedu LOS ‘commander’ in 2015 and carried an INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle. Bhadrachalam Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said that the ‘militia’ members, who belonged to the Kanchala Rasapalli Revolutionary People's Committee (RPC) ‘militia’ committee of the CPI-Maoist, were arrested during a joint search operation carried out by Cherla Police, Special Party Police, and jawans (troopers) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The arrested ‘militia’ members, along with other Maoists, planted a 12-kilogram landmine beneath a BT Road between Gorukonda and Chennapuram villages in Cherla Mandal in July 2022. Dummugudem Sub Inspector (SI) P Keshava Rao, along with staff and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) 141th bn personnel, chased and caught a car that did not stop for the inspection at Nallaballi in the district. Upon questioning, the passengers in the car were found to be Maoist couriers and were identified as Kunja Raghuvaran of Bhadrachalam, Pulipati Raviteja of Andhra Pradesh, Baireddy Sathish, and Ubbanapalli Dinesh Kumar of Chhattisgarh. The couriers had met Maoist leaders on August 11 and were given INR two million in cash to procure explosive material in large quantities to attack Police camps. The couriers were also given a gelatin stick, a detonator, two live rounds of ammunition, and 0.5 metres of cordex wire as a sample for the purchase, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineeth G. said.

The Wazedu Police arrested four persons in possession of explosives and Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) literature during a vehicle check-up in Mulugu District of Telangana on October 12, reports Telangana Today. The arrested are Kadari Yadagiri, Kalakota Prabhakar, Shivarathri Pavan Kalyan, and Elmakanti Mahesh; all of them are from Theegaram village in Jangaon District, according to a press note. Police identified the Maoist couple as Donga Gangadhar Rao alias Narsanna alias Bakkanna alias Vengo Dada (80), a ‘central committee member, CMC’ in the CPI-Maoist technical department, and his wife Bhavani alias Sujata alias Shayamala alias Laxmi (60), a ‘divisional committee member, DCM’ of the outfit’s Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC). Police said that Rao had studied polytechnic in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, in 1969 and moved to Hyderabad for a livelihood. He had worked at a private company in the city during which he got attracted to Naxal [Left Wing extremism, LWE] ideology and subsequently joined the then Peoples’ War Group (PWG) outfit in 1980. He had gone underground in 2000. The CPI-Maoist ‘central committee (CC)’ entrusted him with the responsibility of the technical department involved in the task of manufacturing weapons and explosives, the Police added. The couple had been staying in Indaram under a false identity for the last 10 months. They allegedly purchased land and constructed a small house in the village using fake Aadhaar and PAN cards. The couple had been tasked with strengthening the Maoist urban network, motivating youth to join the outfit, and carrying out disruptive activities at the behest of some senior Maoist leaders. A case has been registered under Section 120 (B) r/w 34 Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 10, 13, 18, and 18 (b) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) 1967. Two fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, INR 157,900 cash, two mobile phones, electronic gadgets, copies of CPI-Maoist Telangana State second plenary resolutions and other documents were recovered from their possession.

The Ramagundam Police arrested Pamidimalla Avinash alias Mallesh, a Dalam (armed squad) member of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), in Godavarikhani town in Karimnagar District of Telangana on December 8, reports Telangana Today. Mallesh, a resident of Satulur in the Palnadu District of Andhra Pradesh, joined the outfit two years ago and was working for it. He used to run a printing press in his village and got into contact with Maoists when they approached him for printing documents and pamphlets. He came to Godavarikhani based on the instructions of the party to restore its hold in the coal belt area. Some posters containing Maoist ideology and propaganda were seized from him.
