A joint operation against Maoists was launched in West Bengal on January 7 with Police forces of West Bengal and Orissa launching a major ground offensive against the Maoists at Gapiballavpur in West Midnapore District, reported Indian Express. Four companies of armed Police of Bengal and Orissa launched the operation at 1pm (IST) at Gapiballavpur, which borders Mayurbhanj District of Orissa. This is the first joint operation of West Bengal Police with forces of another State to curb the Maoists. "A lot of exchange of fire took place between us and the Maoists who triggered landmine blasts too. However, there have been no casualties or injuries on either side nor has there been any arrest. We will continue with our operation and such joint operations will continue," Manoj Verma, Superintendent of Police (West Midnapore) told The Indian Express. Earlier, Mayurbhanj Deputy Inspector General and his counterpart in West Bengal met in Midnapore on January 6 to discuss the operation. The Bengal Government had proposed a similar joint operation with Jharkhand too and is waiting for a response. The Bengal Government has also written to the central Government to send 5-6 companies of Central Para Military Forces to replenish the existing forces. The central Government had taken away some forces from for the elections in Jharkhand.

A suspected CPI-Maoist cadre was killed by the Police in an encounter in the hilly terrain of Belpahari in West Midnapore District, reported The Telegraph. The Police claimed that he was from the same group that had killed a Policeman in the Barikul area of Bankura District on January 25. Following a tip-off that the group had crossed over from Bankura, the Police rushed to the place. As 100 Policemen approached Talpakuria village at around 9am, the Maoists opened fire at them from the forest. “Over 250 rounds were fired in all and the Maoists retreated towards Laljal near the Jharkhand border,” said District Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Verma. Later, the dead body of a suspected Maoist was found along with four improvised explosive devices, a .303 rifle and 10 cartridges. Indian Express quoted the SP as saying,” Acting on intelligence input, we began operation at Talpukuria village in Belpahari at 8.30 am. A Maoist ‘commander’ was shot dead. We have his body. We also arrested 11 villagers, of which six are members of the Maoists squad. The rest are from the PCPA [People's Committee against Police Atrocities] who helped the Maoists.”

At least eight Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed and several others injured in an encounter between the Maoist and joint forces in the West Midnapore District on June 16 (today), reports Times of India. The exchange of fire at Ranja forest near Lalgarh, around 30 kilometres from District headquarter Midnapore town, was still underway when reports last came in. West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma said there were three women among the eight dead and believed the toll could rise as several others, including top Maoist leaders, could have been seriously wounded. "Eight bodies have been recovered by the Police after daybreak. We have also seized a cache of arms that include an AK 47 assault rifle, an SLR, some pistols and ammunition," he said. Police believe the arms and ammunition were among those looted from Police armoury in the past. According to Verma, Maoists have been active in the area between Lalgarh and Salboni for quite some time.

The death toll increased to 12 in the encounter that occurred between the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and joint forces in the West Midnapore District on June 16. Earlier, it was reported that eight Maoists were killed. "Twelve Maoists were killed by the joint forces. It is a major success. We found eight bodies. We have information that four of the bodies were carried away by Maoists while many more were injured," Director General of Police (DGP) Bhupinder Singh told reporters in Kolkata, according to PTI. "Acting on a tip off that 40 to 45 Maoists had gathered at Duli village near Ranja forest in Salboni Police Station area, a team of commandos and Special Forces of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Police closed in," the DGP said., adding, "When the Maoists opened fire, the forces retaliated." The NDTV, however, put the death toll at 13. Police sources said that five of the eight Maoists killed were been identified as Arjun (a close associate of Maoist leaders Bikash and Tara), Sagen, Mala, Radha and Lakshmi (who is suspected to have played a major role during the massacre of 24 Eastern Frontier Rifles personnel at Silda on February 15), adds The Hindu. The sources said that based on intelligence inputs received from the Jharkhand Police, it was suspected that top Maoist leader Akash was also killed during the encounter. According to Police sources, the Security Forces had raided the area three days ago [June 13] also but the Maoists had managed to escape. Indian Express adds that the Maoist squad was led by Maoist State Committee member for Bengal-Jharkhand-Orissa region and ‘commander’ of the Lalgarh squad Bikash. He was said to have escaped, using his cadres as a shield. “It was to ensure Bikash’s safe passage that the Maoist squad took such heavy casualty,” said an unnamed security official involved in the operation. Maoist casualties confirmed that Bikash’s Lalgarh squad was joined by cadres from Jharkhand. One of the bodies found was that of Arjun Munda, a Jharkhand Maoist. Another was of Sagen Mahato, a Maoist from Lalgarh.

During searches the joint forces seized about 120 kilograms of explosives stacked in two plastic drums and stored under the ground near a water body in the Madhupur forest near Jamboni, which provides easy access to Jharkhand.
