Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-Marxist) member in the Bankura District, reported IANS. The body was found in the morning of January 7 by local residents. According to Police, Haren Baske, 40, was abducted by a group of people late in the night of January 6 and taken to the nearby Surirtari near Ranibandh under Barikul Police Station, where he was shot dead. Local residents said a group of 50 Maoists had barged into Baske’s house and taken him away with them, as he was a CPI-Marxist activist.

Suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres raided a Police camp at Satnala in the Barikul region of Bankura District on January 25, abducting two Policemen and snatching firearms from the camp, reported The Hindu. The body of one of the abducted Policemen was later found near the camp on January 26. Superintendent of Police Vishal Garg said a large group of militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, raided the camp, taking the personnel by surprise. They opened fire indiscriminately, injuring four personnel. Then they snatched an AK-47 rifle and a self-loading rifle from the Policemen. “When the policemen retaliated, the group fled from the spot, but took away two constables with them,” he added. The bullet-riddled dead body of Constable Sanjay Ghosh was found in a forest near the camp, while the other Policeman, Ajay Pande, remained untraced. Garg said a massive search was under way.

A day after his abduction from Old Malda on February 21, his wife Gangarani had received a call demanding INR ten million for his release. But the family members refused to say if they had paid the ransom to secure the release. Police suspect that he had been abducted by Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) or United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants and a financial deal had been struck for his release.

Times of India reports that the Communist Party of India- Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres abducted headmaster of Shibram Satpathy School Ranjit Duley from Sarulia in Bankura District on March 5. Police suspect that Ranjit’s abduction has a revenge motive. On August 15, 2009, Ranjit’s brother Ramkrishna was shot dead by Maoists. Both brothers were members of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) local committee at Sarulia. A group of 10 to 12 Maoists first raided the house of Chandicharan Singh Sardar, president of the Gitalaya village panchayat samiti (block level local self government institution). Upon not finding him there, the Maoists abducted his brother and local Forward Bloc leader Tapan Singh Sardar and killed him near the house. Chapala Garai was the sarpanch (president of gram panchayat, village level local self government institution) of Darda gram panchayat. Kinkar Singh was the Bloc secretary of the Forward Bloc while Gobardhan Singh was a Bloc member for 15 years. The victims were picked up from their homes at about 2 AM [IST] and shot at from close range in a field in the hilly village bordering Jharkhand, Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Chaudhuri said. Maoists left posters at the spot claiming that the seven villagers had been spying for the Security personnel. “Protest against those with ‘Operation Green Hunt’ and Left Front and Congress leaders,” one of the posters said.
