Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre were killed an exchange of fire between CRPF personnel and Maoists in a forested area at Irapalli village under Pamed Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 10, reports The Times of India. Six other CRPF personnel, including an officer, were also injured in the encounter. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P., separate teams of Security Forces (SFs) comprising the 151st and 204th battalions of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), had launched a counter-insurgency operation in the Maoist core areas of Sukma and Bijapur Districts on February 9. On the following day, personnel of the CoBRA, while advancing through the said forested area came under fire from the Maoists, triggering a gun-battle between the two sides, the IGP said, adding that two constables were killed in the gunfight, while six others sustained injuries. The body of a slain Maoist along with a weapon was recovered from the encounter spot, said the IGP, adding that the identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained.

In a major attack on Security Forces (SFs), the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres ambushed a group of SFs killing 17 of them and injuring 15 others while one Maoist was also killed in the attacking the dense forests of Elmaguda close to Kasalpad and Minpa villages in the Chintagufa area in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on March 21, reports The Times of India. According to Director General of Police (DGP), D. M. Awasthi, on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the said area, a group of over a hundred personnel belonging to District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had launched an anti-Maoist operation. The Maoists, however, triggered Improvised Explosive Device (IED)explosions and opened fire at the SFs leading to an exchange of fire in which 12 DRG and five STF personnel were killed while 15 of them were injured, the DGP added. The Maoists also looted a Light Machine Gun(LMG), 14 assault rifles and an Under-Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) from the possession of the deceased SFs. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) reported that one Maoist was killed and 14 SF personnel were injured while 13 jawans (troopers) of State Police were missing in the encounter. However, on September 11, 2020, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Sunderaj Patilingam in a press release stated that 23 Maoists and 17 SFs were killed in the said encounter.

Armed cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed a dreaded gangster, identified as Ramanand Yadav, his relative, and a close associate while five others were injured in a gun-battle at an undisclosed location on the border of Khagaria-Saharsa District of Bihar on April 8, reports Deccan Herald. As per the report, the Maoists were tracking Ramanand who had gone to Khagaria to attend the last rites of his brother-in-law. They gheraoed Ramanand and his men on the border of Khagaria-Saharsa District and in the ensued gunfight, Ramanand, his nephew and a close associate were killed. Ramanand was wanted by the Bihar Police in connection with more than a dozen cases of kidnapping, loot and murder in five Districts – Saharsa, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur and Khagaria in Bihar.

Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and a Police Sub-Inspector (SI) were killed in an exchange of fire in a forested area near Pardhoni village under Manpur Police Station limits in Rajnandgaon District of Chhattisgarh on May 8, reports Hindustan Times. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Jitendra Shukla, said, “we had got a pin-point Information about the Maoists and hence a team was made to nab (arrest) them. When we were cordoning off Pardhoni, the Maoists started firing. In retaliation, we also started firing. Our sub-inspector S.K. Sharma lost his life in Maoist firing.” The slain Maoists included a ‘divisional committee member, DCM’ identified as Ashok, and an ‘area committee member, ACM’ of CPI-Maoist identified as Krishna. “Two other woman cadres, Sarita and Pramila, were junior cadres and working as party members,” the SP said, adding, “we have also recovered an AK-47 assault rifle, one Self Loading Rifle (SLR)and two 315 bore rifle from the spot and searching of the whole area is going on.”

Three cadres of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a woman, were killed while another was injured in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in Tabo Valley of Manmandubera forest under Tabo Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on May 28, reports The Times of India. Also, another PLFI rebel was arrested from the spot. The slain cadres were identified as - Patras (40), Dadu Nag (30) alias Champa da, and his 26-year-old wife whose identity is yet to be ascertained. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajiv Ranjan Singh said, “Acting on a tip-off the Police and Paramilitary Forces launched a search operation at the valley at dawn and as the forces were advancing, the PLFI rebels opened fire at them. Soon the SFs replied the shots leading to a gun-battle. After the guns fell silent, the SFs started a combing operation during which they found three bullet-ridden bodies and one AK-47 rifle, live cartridges, explosives, and Naxal literature were from the spot.” The DIG further added that “An unidentified cadre who sustained injuries in the gunfight has been admitted to the government hospital in Chakradharpur while a fifth rebel, identified as Manoj, has been arrested.”

Four cadres the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) at Sirla forest near Tumudibandha area in Kandhamal District of Odisha on July 5 (today), reports The Hindu. Acting on a tip-off regarding a Maoist camp, District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel raided the spot in the early hours of the morning. An exchange of fire broke out between the two sides, during which four of the Maoists sustained bullet injuries and died. Though, the slain Maoists have been identified as members of 'Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) Division', their identities are yet to be ascertained. Arms and ammunition, including three license rifle, two country made pistol and huge cache of weapons have been seized from the site of the encounter.

Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an exchange of fire with a joint team of Security Forces (SFs) comprising Special Task Force (STF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near Chautha nallah in the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) forest bordering Nepal under Laukariya Police Station limits in West Champaran District of Bihar on July 10, reports The Times of India. One Policeman and an SSB Inspector were injured in the gun-battle. The slain Maoists were identified as – Vipul from Muzaffarpur, Kiran, Nakul and Chhotey Sahni alias Suraj, a resident of Valmikinagar. Vipul had been arrested in 2018 for the murder of Champapur-Gonauli Panchayat mukhiya (head of the Panchayat, village level local self-Government institution) Manoj Singh in the VTR region. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Lallan Mohan Prasad said by the Special Task Force of Bagaha police and the SSB on receiving the inputs about the presence of the Maoists in the forests, the joint operation was launched. “The Maoists were caught unawares and resorted to indiscriminate firing. The security personnel retaliated and four rebels were killed in the encounter,” said a Police official. The SFs also recovered three self-loading rifles (SLRs), an automatic Kalashnikov (AK)-56 one .303 rifle from the encounter spot.

Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an exchange fire with Security Forces (SFs) near Pulamphar forest under Jagargunda Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on August 12, reports Hindustan Times. The Inspector-general of Police (IGP), Sunderraj Patilingam said, acting on inputs about the presence of Maoists in the interior areas of Jagargunda, the SFs, including the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite unit Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), launched a joint operation. When one of the patrolling teams was in the said forest, an exchange of fire broke out between the two sides. After the guns fell silent, bodies of four male Maoists were found at the spot along with a .303 rifle, a huge cache of country-made weapons, and explosive material, the IGP said adding that the identities of the slain Maoists are yet to be ascertained.

In one incident, Maoists killed four civilians on suspicion of being ‘Police informers’, in Gangaloor region of Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh on September 4, reports The Times of India. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sunderaj Patilingam, “the deceased were identified as Punem Sannu, Gore Sannu and Aaytu, natives of Pusnar village and Bhusku from Metapal village. They called the villagers, who were supporting the construction work and killed four of them.” The incident took place in forests during a ‘jan adalat’ (People’s/Kangaroo court of Maoists) where the rebels branded the four villagers as ‘Police informers’ and sentenced them to death, the IGP said adding that there were 20 villagers called inside forest who were in support of development activities in the region. All of them were beaten up while 16 of them were released and four asked to wait. The villagers later spotted bodies of four persons killed with sharp-edged weapon and reported to Police.

Five Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a woman, and two Special Operations Group (SOG) commandos were killed in an exchange of fire between the Maoists and an anti-Maoist operations team in a forest in Kalahandi District, along the Kandhamal District border, of Odisha on September 9, reports The Indian Express. Two composite teams of SOG and the Kalahandi District Voluntary Force (DVF) initiated an operation in the forest area, during which they were subjected to heavy firing from the other end. As Police personnel were combing the said area, several Maoists came into a face-off with the forces. When asked to surrender, the Maoists opened fire at the Police team, forcing the latter to open fire in self-defense, resulting in the death of three Maoists. While the remaining cadres managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest, Police recovered one 8 mm rifle, blasting materials and other items from the spot. A team of SFs comprising the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and its elite unit Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), launched an operation on September 27, after receiving intelligence inputs about the movement of 120 People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) members of CPI-Maoist’s ‘West Bastar Division committee secretary’ - Papa Rao. When one of the patrolling teams of DRG was cordoning off the said forest area, an exchange of fire broke out between the two sides. After the guns fell silent, the body of one unidentified Maoist was recovered while the other three were dragged away by their colleagues. The Anti-Naxal Squad (ANS) commandos killed five cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including three women cadres, in the Kosmi-Kisneli forests under Dhanora Taluka (revenue sub-division)in Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra on October 18, reports The Times of India. There were no casualties or injuries on the security personnel side. Sources said Tippagarh Local Organizational Squad (LOS) and Platoon 15 were present at the place when they were surrounded by the commandos. The encounter lasted for around 45 minutes following which the Maoists started retreating, later, the slain bodies of five Maoists, their pittoos (rucksucks), one INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle and two other firearms were recovered from the encounter site. Apart from Tippagarh Dalam (armed squad), Korchi Dalam too was present at the site. The slain Maoists have been identified as Rajo Kirko, 34, (platoon 15), Kumli Gawade (23) (Korchi Dalam member), Zunki Pada (32) (Tippagarh Dalam Area committee member, ACM) and Shivaji Madavi (30) (Tippagarh Dalam member). Three persons including a ‘zonal commander’ of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) identified as Santosh Yadav alias Alok, and two civilians were killed during an exchange of fire between the Maoists and Security Forces (SFs) at Mahuari village under Barachatti Police Station limits in Gaya District of Bihar on the intervening night of November 21 and 22, reports The Pioneer. The Maoists opened fire at a team of SFs comprising Central Reserve Police Force (CPRF), Police personnel of Jharkhand and Bihar, who were out on a joint anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. In the ensued gun-battle, Santosh Yadav, carrying a reward of INR 1 million on his head was killed by the SFs while the Maoists shot dead two civilians – Birendra and Jairam and injured three others when they opened fire at a civilian crowd. Also, four troopers of the CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) battalion of the CRPF were injured. SFs recovered INSAS and AK 47 rifle from the encounter spot. Three bodies of the rebels, including a woman cadre, in uniform were recovered from the encounter site.
