A suspected National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) terrorist was arrested by the security forces (SFs) from Krishnanagar area of Agartala on April 1. Separately, a report on April 1 said that the Nayanbasi faction of the proscribed group is involved in arms smuggling and fake currency circulation in various parts of the country. This was reportedly based on a confession by an arrested terrorist, Dilip Datta, during his interrogation by SFs on April 1. He also admitted that he has been working as a conduit for the NLFT. Conduits allegedly from Thailand, Myanmar and Pakistan are reportedly facilitating these activities of the NLFT through Bangladesh.

The accused, a supporter of the pro-democracy leader in Myanmar Aung Sang Suu Kyi had hijacked the plane and diverted it to the N S C Bose International Airport in Kolkata. The two students released all the passengers after a few hours of negotiations and surrendered to the Indian authorities at the airport. They had been granted bail by the court in Kolkata after a few months of the incident. Police sources said that the accused is being brought to Kolkata for further interrogation.

These insurgents were being treated for gun shot injuries and explosive burns by various private practitioners. Reports said the intelligence agencies have begun a manhunt for those who brought them to Lucknow. They are also reportedly trying to find out the source of money, which these injured Maoists were spending for their treatment and those helping them in Lucknow. Reports also said that the intelligence agencies have also picked up clues regarding the movement of Maoist leader Pushpa Kumar Bahel alias Prachand in Lucknow about three months ago.

One live hand grenade, one AK-56 assault rifle, four magazines and 65 cartridges were seized from his possession. Police sources said the terrorist, Baldev Singh Dohak, crossed over to Pakistan a number of times and have links with the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). As per police record, Dohak was arrested by the Haryana police in 1991 at Kalianwali Mandi in Sirsa district. Subsequently, he was arrested by Muktsar, Faridkot and Ferozepore police in a number of criminal cases. He remained in jail for four years and he was released on bail in 1995. After coming out of jail, he again started terrorist activities after jumping the bail.

A consistent supporter of the proscribed Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Nedumaran was picked up from his Mylapore residence and remanded to judicial custody till August 28 by a designated judge for POTA cases. Police sources said Nedumaran had been arrested for the pro-LTTE speeches he had made in the past few months and especially during a conference he organised in Chennai on April 13, 2002. Immediately after his remand, Nedumaran told media persons that he would continue to support the LTTE, as it was the only organisation that fought for the cause of Eelam Tamils. Subba, also wanted in connection with the attempt on the life of the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) president Subash Ghising in February 2001, is the son of Gorkha Liberation Organisation chief Chattre Subba, currently in jail on the same charges. An AK-47 rifle and some ammunition were seized from his possession. The police also did not rule out Santosh’s involvement with terrorist groups, particularly the Maoist insurgents in Nepal. Official sources also suspected that the accused had links with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN).

Reports said three of the most wanted Pakistan-based Al-Badr Mujahideen terrorists, including its publicity and finance 'chief' were nabbed in Srinagar in a joint operation by SOG personnel, Jammu and Kashmir police and Border Security Force (BSF), on August 21. While two of them were arrested from a house in Kursoo Rajbagh, the third that had managed to escape during the cordon and search operation, but was later arrested from a hospital in the city. They have been identified as Dr Tariq Mehmood Shaheen alias Zainul Abideen alias Dr Abdullah alias Fayaz Ahmed Khan, Moazam Sadiq and Hamid Noaman Bhat. Two fake identity cards, two pistols, two wireless sets and some incriminating documents, including those containing e-mail addresses and details of fund distribution, were recovered from their possession. A local conduit was also arrested with an amount of Rs 10 Lakh. SF personnel also arrested house-owners who had given shelter to the terrorists, the local who had acted as guide to these terrorists, and also the person who ran the hospital from where the third terrorist was picked up. Reports also said SFs were considering booking the three local residents under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). Some more Al Badr terrorists are also present in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), according to sources, and their aim is to sabotage the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the State by mixing up with the local residents with fake Electronic Photo Identity Cards (EPIC). The interrogation of a Pakistani terrorist of the Al Badr outfit, was arrested on December 23 along with his female associate from a hotel at Jammu General Bus Stand, led to the arrest of a Deputy Superintendent of Police’s brother and Personal Security Officer (PSO) of Nazir Mir, a National Conference (NC) Legislator, besides of six other persons, including two teenaged girls, who were reportedly involved in the recent spate of grenade explosions in Rajouri town. Besides halting grenade explosions in Rajouri, the arrest of the terrorist, Azhar Hussain alias Abu Danish and his female associate Gulzar Bibi, has also helped the police in working out a series of other subversive activities across the border district of Rajouri. Official sources said that the detention were made following leads given by Aftab Ansari, prime accused in the January 22 terrorist attack on the American Centre in Kolkata. The arrested hawala operators were supplying money to Aquib Ali Khan in Bhopal, already under arrest, on instructions from Ansari. Ali Khan used to get consignments of weapons reportedly from Pakistan agents and arrange funds from hawala dealers. The CBI spokesman said that hawala dealers had not been put under arrest but their questioning was on to get details about other possible associates in their network.

However, the residence of a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member, Baldev Singh, was situated close to Akheel Ahmed’s residence. Akheel Ahmed had attempted to purchase Baldev Singh’s residence to ensure that the visits of LeT ‘commanders’ were not noticed. However, when Baldev Singh refused to sell his residence, the plot to kill him and his family members was prepared and executed. The second arrested in an associate of Akheel Ahmed.
