The Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) are reported to have neutralized a militant module and arrested three militants identified as Peer Mohammed Ashraf of the Al Badr, Gowhar Hussain Gani and Saleem Yousuf Gani alias Faisal, both from the HM outfit. A JKP spokesman said that on further investigation, three more Over Ground Workers of the HM outfit were arrested. They were identified as Ajaz Ahmad Pal, Hayatullah Bhat and Muhammad Amin Bhat. One AK 47, three magazines and 59 AK rounds were recovered from their possession.

The Hindu reports that the Mumbai Police on April 10 arrested two cadres of the proscribed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) from the Thane district. The duo, identified as Irshad Salim Khan and Israr Ahmed Abdul Hamid Tailor, are believed to be close to the arrested secretary-general of the outfit, Safdar Nagori. Khan is a civil engineer by profession and was the former president of the outfit while Israr Ahmed is a computer professional. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria told, "Both are wanted in a case registered under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act here on July 28, 2006, in which train blasts accused Ehtesham Siddqui was earlier arrested."

Police said acting on a tip off, the 'Q' branch police team arrested a Sri Lankan Tamil Refugee Navaneetha Krishnan from the Samathuvapuram locality near Sakki Mangalam. The chemical solution was being smuggled to Sri Lanka for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), police said.

Another person, Nongthombam Ibomcha alias Raju, who escaped during a police raid, surrendered before the Yairipok police. Police claimed that contrary to the initial reports, neither the building of the railway station nor the railway tracks were blown up by the Maoists. The Maoists, however, had damaged an ATM of the State Bank of India in an attempt to loot cash, but had failed. It came to light when a CSG team raided a boat used to make illegal trips to Iranatheevu, controlled by the LTTE, in Sri Lanka, near the fishing harbour in Rameswaram. There were five persons on board, identified as Oomaiyan alias Christhu, Vellaiyan, the owner of the boat Chellaiah, Murugan and Arasu, who possessed photographs of model uniforms, which were supposed to be delivered to a group of tailors in Tamil Nadu. A sum of INR 3000 and 50 soaps were also seized. G. Venugopal, CSG Inspector who carried out the raid, told The Hindu that the group had ventured into the sea in the guise of fishermen. They had confessed to having visited Iranatheevu twice in the last four days. Christhu is reported to have had an active role in meeting the LTTE agents.

Sources told Daily Excelsior that a seven-member Police party conducted a raid on the residential quarter of Pharmacist Shaukat Ahmed Pir at Old Sub District Hospital, close to Iqbal Market, at 10:00pm (IST). On sighting the Police, a heavily armed militant reportedly lobbed a hand grenade and opened bursts of AK-47 gunfire, injuring Constable Abdul Majeed. In the subsequent encounter, Police shot dead the militant and arrested the Pharmacist. The Superintendent of Police (Sopore), Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, confirmed that the slain Pakistani militant was HuM chief Sajjad Afghani. The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Dr B Srinivas, informed a press conference that Handwara Police conducted a raid in Srinagar and arrested HM ‘chief spokesman’ Abdul Khaliq Dar a.k.a. Junaid-ul-Islam a.k.a. Khalil-ur-Rehman a.k.a. Fazal-ur-Rehman early in the morning. According to Police records, Junaid-ul-Islam had crossed the Line of Control in 1990 to undergo training in guerrilla warfare at a HM camp in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). He underwent training and later also handled training camps for fresh recruits and trainee HM militants. He was an ideologue and was also known for writing articles and his reactions to the articles of other authors in local newspapers, particularly in the Urdu weekly Chattan. He had regularly visited a number of guerrilla training camps in PoK to propagate the jihadi ideology and also headed the media operations of his group. Police said that since his return to Kashmir valley in 2003, Junaid-ul-Islam had been operating as the chief spokesman.

As many as 26 NLFT cadres also stayed in the HNLC camp at that time, he added. Meanwhile, Sentinel quoting Rynjah’s confession reports that since most of the cadres deserted the camp the strength has been reduced to 26, and the camp is left with one .303 rifle. He added that training was affected due to shortage of arms and ammunition. He said that he deserted the camp due to forced labour detention and ill treatment by the HNLC commanders. He mentioned that one of his colleagues, Bahdeng, died in the camp during training, while two others, identified as Stallion and Bahdit, deserted the camp.

On August 11, the Roorkee police arrested a 38-year old agent of the Pakistani external intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), from Piran Kaliyar, a popular Islamic pilgrimage spot, reports Statesman. Police sources said that Mohammed Afzal Pradhan has been active in the area for the past several months, and helped run an ISI-backed fake currency racket in the country. Police found four fake passports, including a Pakistani one, fake currency notes, some Pakistani currency, some contraband substances, and drugs in his possession. According to the Senior Superintendent of Police of Hardwar, V Muruguran, Mohammed Afzal Pradhan is a resident of Mumbai who had been working under another ISI agent Jatah alias Bilal, wanted by the police for running the fake currency racket. On his directions, Pradhan ran this racket in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Lucknow and Hyderabad and had been sent to Uttarakhand some four months back.

Documents pertaining to Indian Army, a photograph of Ordnance Factory, Kanpur, a map of Cantonment area, tickets, pocket diary, mobile phone, driving licence and ration card were seized from him. The JuM terrorist, Fayyaz Ahmed, had entered India via Nepal on August 5, 2008 and was in touch with the commander of the outfit, General Abdullah. On August 16, the Gujarat Police announced the arrest of Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) leader Abul Bashar Qasmi, who allegedly was the mastermind behind the July 26 Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts, reports The Hindu. Gujarat Director-General of Police P.C. Pandey said Qasmi was arrested from a village in Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh (UP) by a joint team of the UP and Gujarat Police. The Gujarat police also said with this arrest they had unravelled the conspiracy that led to the bombings. Before Qasmi’s arrest, nine SIMI cadres were arrested from Ahmedabad and Vadodara. “We now have the entire details of how and where the plans for the Ahmedabad blasts were chalked out, who were the people involved and how the entire plan was operationalised,” the DGP said. Acting on a tip off, police arrested four suspected Maoists when they were negotiating a ransom payment with a prominent businessman of Sundergarh district in a temple at the civil township area of Rourkela city. Following their interrogation, two Maoist group leaders, identified as Om Ahya alias Raju of Singhbhum in Jharkhand and Rohit Das of Keonjhar district in Orissa, were arrested near the railway station. The Maoists had earlier collected a token amount of INR 100,000 from the businessman. According to police sources, the ULFA leader, identified as Dharmen Koch, belonged to the 128th Battalion of the outfit and he had been running a shop in Tura Super Market for the past two months. During interrogation, Dharmen revealed that two months ago he received an order from the ULFA leadership to shift the Battalion to Myanmar since the atmosphere in Bangladesh was not conductive for the organisation. One week later, he was again asked to take over as 'area commander' of ULFA's 109th Battalion in Garo Hills from Madan Koch who was killed in a police encounter on January 22, 2007. Police said the 109th Battalion was involved in supplying arms to the ULFA from Bangladesh through Garo Hills. The Battalion also carried out extortion drives in the plain belt areas of Garo Hills.

A. K. Jain, the Additional Director General of Police (Crime) and chief of the Special Investigation Team in Rajasthan said, "Shahbaz was a key player in planting the bombs in Jaipur as he was instrumental in mobilising resources as well as selecting the team, which executed the blasts." Police sources said Pathan's name was revealed during the interrogation of Sajid Mansuri, an accused arrested in connection with the Ahmedabad serial blasts case. An unidentified police officer told Times of India, "Pathan was in touch with several SIMI activists in Pune and we passed on this information to the Gujarat Police. Panor, a local resident, used to act as a linkman in the extortion racket. Police also recovered INR 110000 from Nokte, besides two mobile phone sets.
