A woman cadre of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Ranai, was killed while two Security Forces (SFs) were injured in an exchange of fire with the SFs near Karemetta Police camp under Chhote Donger Police Station limits of Narayanpur District in Chhattisgarh on April 29, reports The Pioneer. As per the Police Officials, Ranai was an ‘area committee member’, and in-charge of the East Bastar division supply team. She was an active cadre of the East Bastar division since 2007 and was believed to be involved in more than a dozen of Maoist attacks in the Narayanpur area. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohit Garg, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was out on a counter-insurgency operation in the area. When the patrolling team was cordoning off the forest near the said Police camp, the Maoists who had laid an ambush, detonated IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), and opened fire at the SFs, leading to the gun-battle. “Two security personnel, one belonging to the DRG and the other from the CAF, sustained injuries in the incident,” said the SP adding that after the guns fell silent, the body of a woman Maoist and two rifles were recovered from the spot.

Four security personnel, including a Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Sub-Inspector (SI), two constables of the paramilitary force and a J&K Police were injured in a grenade attack in Nowhatta chowk in Srinagar downtown area in Srinagar District of J&K April 29, reports The Times of India. Around 9.10pm, militants lobbed a hand grenade targeting a joint team of SSB’s 55th Corps and J&K Police stationed at the checkpoint in Nowhatta chowk. In the explosion, three SSB personnel — SI Anurag Rao, head constable Sananta Kumar and constable Durgesh — and one J&K Police constable, Abdul Majeed, sustained splinter injuries, an SSB officer said.

Five Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were arrested from Dantewada and Bijapur Districts of Chhattisgarh in three separate incidents on August 1, reports The Pioneer. In one incident, three Maoists, including two minors, were arrested after an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and Maoists in a forest near Tetam village under Katekalyan Police Station limits in Dantewada District on August 1. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police launched an operation based on a specific input that senior Maoists had convened a meeting of people from Tetam, Tela, Jiakorta and other villages in a bid to force them to observe the Martyrs Week (July 28 to August 3) in memory of their slain leaders. When the patrolling team was near Tetam, the Maoists triggered IED (Improvised Explosive Devise) blasts and opened fire on SFs that led to the gun-battle. When the gun fell silent, the SFs arrested Hidma Madvi (23), a ‘jan militia member’ along with a 15-year-old girl and a boy aged 16. Also, detonators, Maoist banners, fire crackers, medicines and items of daily use were recovered from the spot, the SP said adding that “the minor girl was part of the Chetna Natya Mandli (cultural wing of Maoists) while the boy was active as a ‘militia member’. All the three were allegedly tasked with arranging commodities of daily use for senior cadres, spreading Maoist propaganda, damaging roads and conducting reconnaissance on police.” In other incidents, two Maoists, identified as Mahesh Yadav (32) and Manku Modiyam (32) were arrested from separate places in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on August 1. While Yadav was arrested from Tindodi village under Bhairamgarh Police Station limits, Modiyam was arrested from Chilnar village under Bijapur Police Station limits in the District. A Police officer said, Yadav was involved in the killing of Policeman -Somaru Poyam and injuring his parents at their house in Matwada village on July 1. On the other hand, Modiyam was wanted for killing a Police official and snatching his AK-47 rifle in Pamalwaya area in the District in 2011.

Five Police personnel were injured in a petrol bomb attack on August 25, in Mawlyndep of Ri-Bhoi District in Meghalaya, reports East Mojo. In a statement issued by Superintendent of Police (SP), East Khasi Hills District, one of Police personnel sustained burn injuries and others were injured after their vehicle were attacked with stones and petrol bomb. Following the incident, combing operation were carried out in the areas and broken bottles, one unused petrol bomb and a small quantity of petrol in a plastic bottle were recovered. The incident took place following the meeting between Farmers Association of Lawmei and those opposing Assam vehicles coming to the Lawmei vegetable collection centre and BDO Sohiong and accompanied by OC Lumdiengjri. The BDO had requested for police security in the functioning of collection centre. It was during this interim, the personnel deployed at Lawmei on their way back the police vehicle was attacked.

Two rooms were also partially damaged in the explosion. Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has claimed responsibility for the blast. Acting on inputs about the presence of senior cadres of Darbha division committee of Maoists, SFs had launched a major offensive in the forests of Gogunda, Bedma, Nagaram, Pujaripara, Gumodi and Kakadi on December 23. The DRG trooper was injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion triggered by the Maoists while a patrolling team was advancing after the gun-battle at Kakadi village of Dantewada District on December 24. “Personnel belonging to DRG, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) unit were involved in the action that concluded on December 25. According to a Police official, the incident took place when a DRG team was returning to base after destroying a Maoist transit camp. The Security Forces (SFs) also recovered six IEDs from two separate places in the same operation. “Acting on a tip-off about a Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] transit camp in the forest near Marjum village, a DRG team launched an operation on the night of July 5. When the team reached the spot, on July 6 morning, Naxals had fled leaving behind three IEDs, each weighing five kilograms.” the official said adding that “later on the way back, they recovered three IEDs, each weighing two kilograms, in Kalepal. Meanwhile, two personnel came in contact with a pressure IED connection, triggering a blast in which both sustained minor injuries. Awasthi, on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the said area, a group of over a hundred personnel belonging to District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had launched an anti-Maoist operation. The Maoists, however, triggered Improvised Explosive Device (IED)explosions and opened fire at the SFs leading to an exchange of fire in which 12 DRG and five STF personnel were killed while 15 of them were injured, the DGP added. The Maoists also looted a Light Machine Gun(LMG), 14 assault rifles and an Under-Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) from the possession of the deceased SFs. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) reported that one Maoist was killed and 14 SF personnel were injured while 13 jawans (troopers) of State Police were missing in the encounter. Police said an armed squad of the CPI-Maoist stormed into Bodhi-Bigha village in Dumaria Police Station limits in Gaya District and planted dynamites that blew up the building.According to the villagers, the community hall, built with then Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Anuj Kumar’s fund at a cost of INR 2 million, had been on Maoists’ radar for a while. On March 27, 2019, Maoists had also blown up Singh’s house in Dumaria after he allegedly failed to return their INR 20 million given in demonetised notes to exchange.Police sources said there were pamphlets at the site demanding INR 20 million from Singh, purportedly from Maoists.
