According to official sources, 37 left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) and the People’s War Group (PWG), surrendered before Jharkhand Chief Minister Babulal Marandi in Giridih, on August 12. The Chief Minister handed over a cheque for of Rs. 10,000 and papers relating to the handing over of a unit under the Prime Minister’s AwasYojna (housing programme) to all those who surrendered. He said his government has instituted a rehabilitation package for surrendered Naxalites and most of the persons who joined the Naxal movement did so out of sheer ignorance and not driven by hardcore ideology. He added, "We tackle Naxalism from all angles, law and order and also from socio-economic view point. But killing of elected persons is ridiculous". The Chief Minister also appealed to political parties to rise above ideological divides and cooperate with the government to combat the menace of Naxalism in the State.
