Five Maoists, a security force (SF) personnel and a civilian were killed in a clash on April 23-night between SFs and Maoists in Chautara, headquarters of the Sindhupalchowk district. The clash occured after the Maoists launched simultaneous attacks on the SFs guarding the repeater tower of Nepal Telecom and the Royal Nepalese Army’s (RNA) Naya Srinath Battalion around 9 pm. The RNA issued a statement that SFs foiled the Maoist attacks, adding that one soldier and five insurgents were killed in the clash. Four civilians and 10 SF personnel were injured in the clash. After the attacks, Maoists reportedly abducted Om Thapa, a police personnel, from his residence.

The clashes erupted as the insurgents launched simultaneous attacks on all security installations, Government offices in Malangwa and the Arjun Band barracks of the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) at Nawalpur. Kantipur Online reports that the Maoists freed over 129 inmates, including at least 22 Maoists, from the district prison. The District Administration Office, District Police Office, District Development Committee Office, District Prison and other Government offices caught fire after the attack and were damaged.

Unofficial reports say at least seven police personnel were killed in the Maoist attack. According to Himalayan Times, the clash ensued after the Maoists launched simultaneous attacks at 6.30 pm on the district police office, ward police office, regional police office, the unified command’s Boradandi barrack, Sukhhad base camp, Nepal Rastra Bank branch office and government buildings at Dhangadhi. Of the 25 police personnel in the ward police office, 10 have gone missing after the attack, the report added. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defense, “A group of around 4,000 terrorists tried to make a consorted attack on security bases in the district headquarters at 11.00 p.m. Following the attempted attacks on the bases, the security forces put up a strong resistance in the clashes which continued until 6:00 this morning and was successfully foiled by the security forces in the area.” Four bodies of Maoist insurgents were recovered from the incident site. “After having examined the nature of the clashes and based on accounts of eyewitnesses, it appears that the casualty figures on the terrorist’s side could have been very extensive,” the statement added. Some SF personnel are still out of contact after the incident, sources said. The camp had 230 policemen. Maoists claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Maoists also set free all 103 prisoners, including 32 insurgents, after attacking the District Prison. 16 prisoners have reportedly come into contact with the administration so far, the statement added. SFs recovered one SLR, two .303 rifles, socket bombs and other explosives from the incident site. As reported earlier, the clashes erupted after the insurgents launched an attack at the district headquarters of Ilam targeting the District Prison Office, District Administration Office, District Police Office, the Army base and other Government offices on March 5.
