A third-year student at Bahawalpur's Government Sadiq Egerton College on March 20 stabbed a professor to death over what he vaguely described as the academic's "anti-Islam" remarks, reports Dawn. Associate professor Khalid Hameed, the head of the English department, was seated inside his office at the college when he was allegedly accosted and attacked with a knife by the student. According to initial information noted by Police at the scene of the crime, Khateeb Hussain, a 5th-semester Bachelor of Arts (BA) student enrolled in the English department, had exchanged hot words with Prof Hameed at around 8:40am over the arranging of a 'welcome party' at the college. The event, which Hameed was overseeing, was to be held on March 21 to welcome new students to the college. Hussain was averse to the event being organised because he viewed the mingling of male and female pupils at the function as "un-Islamic". Following an argument, Hussain stabbed the professor in the abdomen and head. Hameed was taken to the Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. In the video, seen by Dawn, the suspect identifies himself as Khateeb Hussain and says that he attacked the English professor because he allegedly "spoke against Islam". In response to a question, he says he assaulted the teacher with a knife in the office where he was sitting. Both of the suspect's hands are bandaged, indicating he received knife injuries during the scuffle. When informed that the professor had died at the hospital, the suspect expresses satisfaction with his actions. He is then questioned on why he did not use a lawful way of voicing his complaints against the academic, to which he responds that the country's laws are "freeing the blasphemers (gustaakhon) ". When asked if he regrets his actions, he expresses no remorse.

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) of Peshawar (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) sentenced two persons, including a local Government official, to life in prison on March 22 (today) for their role in the Mardan university campus lynching two years ago of Mashal Khan accused of blasphemy, reports Daily Times.Mashal Khan (23), was attacked and killed by a mob in the university campus following a dormitory debate about religion. In February 2018, the court convicted 31 people, sentencing one person to death, while acquitting 26 others.A joint investigation team had later found the blasphemy allegations against Mashal Khan to be false.ATC sentenced two more men to life imprisonment, while acquitting two others.Arif Khan, a local Government official who had been a member of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was convicted for provoking and participating in the lynch mob.The court ruling noted two videos in which Khan is seen “torturing Mashal” and “congratulating his co-accused for committing the murder”.Khan’s grave continues to be guarded by police, due to fears that it will be defaced by religious hardliners despite his name being cleared of blasphemy.

Riots broke out in Ghotki District of Sindh on September 15 after a school principal from the minority Hindu community was booked on charges of alleged blasphemy, reports Times of India. Widespread protests erupted in Ghotki after a FIR was filed against the Hindu principal of Sindh Public School on the complaint of Abdul Aziz Rajput, a student's father who claimed that the teacher had committed blasphemy. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan shared a video of protesters breaking the infrastructure of the school and expressed concern over the situation. "Alarming reports of accusations of blasphemy in Ghotki and the outbreak of mob violence," the rights organisation said in a tweet. Videos of stick-wielding protesters were shared on social media in which they were seen vandalising a Hindu temple and damaging the school where the incident took place. Police on September 16 registered three cases against rioters who had taken to the streets to protest, reports Pakistan Today. According to Sukkur Additional Inspector General (AIG) Jamil Ahmed, all first information reports (FIR) have been filed in the Ghotki A-section Police Station with the State as the complainant. One FIR was filed under Sections 295 (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 147 (punishment for rioting) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). AIG Ahmed said that Section 295 was included because the protesters had vandalised a Hindu temple. Police have nominated 45 people in the FIR, out of which 22 are named while 23 are unidentified.
