A 36-inch diameter pipe supplying gas to the Punjab and Sindh provinces was reportedly destroyed in the attack and gas supply to Multan, Faisalabad, Muzaffarabad and other cities was suspended. Some rockets and mortars missed their target and hit the runway at Sui Airport, damaging it considerably. Dawn reported that casualty figures might rise as 12 of those wounded were said to be in critical condition in different hospitals of Islamabad. Approximately 8,000 to 10,000 devotees were reportedly attending the annual gathering of Shia sect when a bearded man of medium height and dark complexion walked up to the stage and blew himself up, said eye-witnesses. Syed Akhtar Hussain, a witness, told Daily Times that the congregation had just commenced prayers when gunshots were heard in the courtyard followed by a large explosion. Police said three men approached the well-guarded mosque and one of them snatched the machinegun of a head constable. They shot him dead while the other police personnel killed one assailant and injured another. The mosque’s private guard, Fida Hussain, was also killed while two police personnel were wounded. The suicide bomber managed to run into the courtyard and blow himself up, killing one worshipper, the witness said, adding that the bomber’s head was decapitated and looked of African origin.
