Two employees of the Barani Area Development Project (BADP) of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government were wounded during a bomb blast at their office in Kohistan on April 28, according to Dawn. Local clerics had reportedly delivered sermons during Friday prayers urging “the faithful” to attack offices of NGOs who inducted women staff for their project activities in the remote district. The clerics asked the people to restrict the entry of female staff of NGOs into their houses, saying these women were urging local women to go for family planning against their husbands’ will, which was a sin. “Attack the offices and workers of such NGOs who brought such women to our areas to spread obscenity,” the clerics were quoted as having said in the sermons. Sources added that two partner NGOs of the BADP had inducted four female employees for their health and education projects but the local clerics objected to this and asked them to expel the women.

Seven soldiers were killed and 18 others sustained injuries on August 24 in North Waziristan in four militant attacks, including two suicide bombings targeting the same Pakistan Army convoy at two different places, according to The News. One of the suicide bombers rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the military convoy near the Qamar Picket built on a roadside hill near the Mir Ali town, killing five soldiers and injuring 10 others. Cobra gunship helicopters reportedly attacked suspected militant hideouts later but reports about any loss of life were not available. The same convoy, which had come from Bannu in the North West Frontier Province and was on its way to Razmak, was attacked once more when it proceeded further. Another suicide bomber riding a vehicle struck the convoy near Asadkhel village on the road to Razmak, killing two soldiers and injuring two others. Villagers in Qutabkhel said gunship helicopters shelled the area after the attack on the military convoy. Military officials were later quoted as saying that two militants were killed by the troops in retaliatory firing. The third convoy to be attacked was reportedly transporting troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) from Qutabkhel to Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan. Three FC personnel were wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack that targeted the convoy.

According to Dawn, Taliban militants captured Chargano village at Darra Adamkhel in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on August 8 when rival tribesmen surrendered to them after clashes which left five people dead and at least 10 others injured. Witnesses said that some 20 families of the Qasimkhel tribe surrendered themselves to the militants after 35-hour-long gun fight between the two sides. Both sides targeted each other’s positions with rockets and heavy machine-guns. After capturing the village, the Taliban militants were seen looting houses of tribesmen belonging to Qasimkhel. They also reportedly started a house-to-house search for their rivals in the town. "Families fled their homes and militants brought pick-up trucks and tractor trolleys, taking away everything, including home appliances and weapons," said a tribesman. After taking control of the village, a local commander of the militants appeared in the main Darra Bazaar and announced that the area had been cleared of "criminals." "Criminals have been eliminated and Mujahideen have restored peace", he claimed.

Local people said they had seen the bodies of 15 soldiers and disputed the military’s claim that 15 militants had been killed. A military convoy, going from Miranshah to the Razmak sub-division, came under intense firing by militants after it had hit an improvised explosive device in the Dosali area. 32 more persons, including five children, a woman and two Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel, were killed and scores of others injured on December 26 in continued sectarian violence in Kurram Agency on the fourth consecutive day, The News reported. The death toll from the four days of clashes has reportedly increased to 47 while more than 100 people have been injured. Official sources said the rival groups attacked each other’s positions in Balishkhel, Sadda, Sangina, Khar Kali, Ali Zaik, Bagan and Upper Kurram. Curfew has been clamped in Parachinar for the last five days without any break thus causing severe shortage of edibles and medicines. Heavy weapons, including mortar and rocket shells, are allegedly being used by both the warring groups. One of the shells that landed at a residential area in Sadda bazaar killed five children and a woman and wounded six children. Further, a group of armed men attacked the Mangak security post manned by FC personnel near Sadda killing two soldiers, Taza Gul and Niaz. A rocket attack killed two people at Balishkhel mosque and injured seven others. Three tribesmen were killed during a clash in the suburbs of the city and two in the Ahmadi Shuma area of Lower Kurram. Details of those killed elsewhere in the clashes on December 26 were not available.

Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson, was assassinated on December 27 in a gun and suicide attack as she drove away from a campaign rally just minutes after addressing thousands of supporters at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi, according to Daily Times. 30 more people were killed and over 100 others, including Benazir’s political secretary Naheed Khan and Sherry Rehman, wounded when a suicide attacker riding on a motorbike blew himself up after firing at Benazir who was waving to her supporters from her vehicle’s sun roof. PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar stated that Benazir fell inside the vehicle after receiving bullets in her head and neck. Witnesses said three gun shots were heard before the suicide blast near her Black Lexus bulletproof vehicle. She later died at the Rawalpindi General Hospital. “The blast happened at around 5:10pm and the doctors pronounced her dead at 5:25pm,” Babar said. "It may have been pellets packed into the suicide bomber's vest that hit her," interior ministry spokesman Javed Cheema told AFP. Following the assassination, PPP activists reacted violently in different cities in Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan. Angry protestors took to the streets, pelted stones, burned government and private property and various vehicles besides chanting slogans against the government, The Post reported. At least 10 people were killed in different parts of the country, including two in Lahore, during the exchange of fire. In Karachi, police said at least 70 vehicles were burnt by protesters, including 35 trucks filled with wheat. All petrol pumps were immediately closed as knots of protesters blocked many roads. Incidents of aerial firing were reported in different parts especially in Peshawar, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Quetta. Official sources told The News that civil armed forces have been summoned in aid of the security agencies to maintain law and order, adding the security around sensitive installations and government personalities has been beefed up.
