Incidents and Statements involving United National Liberation Front: 1999-2012

  • December 29: UNLF owned responsibility for the killing of two Tangkhul tribal hunters from Ukhrul District and has sought forgiveness from the tribe. UNLF militants on December 28 killed the duo in Ukhrul District. UNLF claimed that it was a case of mistaken identity as its armed cadres mistook the hunters for Assam Rifles troopers.

  • December 28: Suspected UNLF militants killed two civilians hailing from Kongkan village under Chassad Police Station of Ukhrul District in the same District. Two others namely Ruikanmi Chithung (39), son of (L) Yuingam Chithung and Chingringam Lk (32), son of David Lk, were still reported to be missing.

  • December 15: Proscribed UNLF has warned that the outfit fighting for the return of sovereignty of Manipur would not remain as silent spectator if a situation of conflict, hatred and misunderstanding be created among the different ethnic communities living together in Manipur by baseless and unaccounted statements.

  • December 10: The UNLF denies the arrest of one Wairokpam Roshan as a cadre of the outfit. A statement of the outfit has claimed that Wairokpam Roshan had retired from the outfit some 13 years back and has no relation whatsoever with the outfit.

  • UNLF 'Chairman' R.K.Megan alias Sanayaima said that the SF in Manipur have racism attitude while dealing with the people of Manipur. Megan also said that in the RIMS massacre, the security force involved sorted out people with mainland Indian looks and gunned down all the others indiscriminately. RIMS massacre refers to the killing of nine civilians, including MBBS student Momi Riba on January 7, 1995 in front of RIMS gate by CRPF personals after unidentified militants opened fire on the SF personals.

  • December 9: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre identified as Y Wairakpam Roshan Singh during a search operation in Lousang Khong Mayai leikai.

  • November 23: UNLF militants simultaneously triggered two IEDs, planted at a distance of 20ft by the roadside, injuring two Army personnel and a sniffer dog at Konthoujam along Imphal-Jiribam highway in Imphal West District. UNLF's 38th foundation day falls on November 24.

  • UNLF claimed responsibility of the ambush and reiterated its demand of holding a plebiscite to resolve the armed conflict in Manipur. Refusing to hold talks with the Government, it said the conflict could only be resolved with restoration of Manipur's sovereignty.

  • November 16: SFs arrested a UNLF militant in Thoubal District.

  • November 8: Chairman' of UNLF, RK Meghen alias Sanayaima, said that Central Government tactic in the so called peace process in 'Western South East Asia' (WESIA) [Northeast India] is aimed at transforming the conflict between the peoples of the region with the Government of India into a conflict between the peoples on ethnic lines.

  • About NSCN-IM-Government of India peace talks, Sanayaima said, earlier NSCN-IM was fighting for the sovereignty of the Nagas but later on, they had begun to demand integration of all Naga inhabited areas of the region within the ambit of the Indian Constitution. He further stated that NSCN-IM has fallen into the trap set by the Indian Government and has become instrumental in transforming the conflict in the region along the ethnic lines. UNLF Chairman calls for the unity amongst the peoples WESIA and a common future and vision.

  • October 21: In line with its earlier ultimatum to release all outsiders staying on rent in the State by December 31, the CorCom (Coordination Committee of seven militant outfits) has published a booklet listing the houses and areas where rooms/houses have been put out on rent to outsiders.

  • October 20: NSCN-K has clarified that it did not have any link with non-Naga valley based outfits including UNLF.

  • October 19: Two days after an IED blast injured three personnel of 33 Assam Rifles on October 15 at Khordak, SFs arrested a UNLF cadre identified as Ningthoujam Ibungo alias Khulanba who was allegedly involved in the blast on October 17, 2012.

  • October 16: Thoubal District Police arrested a UNLF militant, identified as Chingakham Inaomacha alias Nonglemba at Yaripok Bazar area. The Police recovered three-mobile handsets with three SIM cards from his possession.

  • October 14: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Nongmaithem Amarjit alias Tignupham, in Sekmajin Khunou of Thoubal District.

  • The 18 hour general strike called by the CorCom, Coordination Committee of seven militant groups, against the 'annexation' of Manipur by India on October 15, 1949 started at 12 midnight.

  • October 13: A fierce encounter took place between two armed groups involving the NSCN-IM and another major militant group. The UNLF is suspected to be the other group involved in the encounter. Sources said a cadre of the NSCN-IM died on the spot while another one was severely injured during the encounter.

  • October 10: Denouncing the October 15, 1949 'Merger Agreement' which marked the inclusion of then independent Manipur as an entity of India, the CorCom, coordination committee of seven militant groups, has declared that an 18 hour general strike would be observed from October 14 midnight throughout Manipur. A CorCom statement issued on October 10 by its Media Coordinator H Poirei stated that October 15 will also be observed as 'National Black Day' and urged all concerned to cease all form of entertainment, sports, commercial or institutional activities during the strike period.

  • October 3: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre identified as Laishram Kanta Singh alias Boro from the Kairimbikok Awang Leikai.

  • Contending that recent successful onslaughts against Indian military personnel by cadres of different armed groups had been creating fear psychosis among the security forces, the UNLF claimed that the Ibobi-led Government of Manipur is reaching out to Indian military leaders to send in more troops.

  • September 28: At least two AR personnel and a civilian were killed while five other AR personnel and two civilians sustained injuries in serial bomb blasts triggered by cadres of MPA, the armed wing of the UNLF at Kwatha village, Chandel District near the Indo-Myanmar border.

  • An MPA spokesperson while claiming responsibility for the ambush said, the ambush was carried out by a mobile unit of MPA operating in Chandel district also claiming that the MPA cadres which had carried out the ambush had safely returned to base.

  • September 27: 'chairman' of UNLF, R.K. Meghen alias Sana Yaima, sees the remark by NIA special court in Guwahati that the goal of his outfit's struggle is Manipur's independence, as a moral victory. The court remark came during framing of charges against Meghen.

  • September 26: A total of 114 militants belonging to different outfits surrendered with arms before Chief Minister O Ibobi and other dignitaries at the headquarters of Inspector General, Assam Rifles (South) at Mantripukhri in Imphal East.

  • September 21: A team of commandos of Thoubal Police arrested a woman cadre of UNLF, identified as Laishram Inao alias Meitei Leima Devi, during a routine search operation conducted at Chairen area in Thoubal.

  • September 9: Government of India's attempt to adjudicate UNLF Chairman R.K. Meghen alias Sana Yaima, Organisation Secretary M Nongyai alias Joy and other cadres on the charge of waging war against India is against and in violation of international law, the outfit alleged in a press statement issued by its Senior Publicity Officer Ksh Yoiheiba.

  • September 6: Special Judge of NIA court in Guwahati framed charges against the 'chairman' of Manipur based UNLF, Rajkumar Meghen alias Sanayaima, and 17 others for waging war against India.

  • United Front formed by northeastern militants in Myanmar and resurgence of their activities in Bangladesh was on the agenda of a three-day annual DGP Conference that began in New Delhi.

    UNLF claimed responsibility for September 5 blast in at Singjamei Chinga near Keishampat traffic point in Imphal in which two Assam Rifle personnel were injured.

  • September 5: Giving the ultimatum to all outsiders to leave Manipur as well to check the influx of migrants, the CorCom, the umbrella body of seven militant outfits has laid down that no one should rent out dwelling places to outsiders, hire the service of migrant workers and engage them in business transactions.

  • August 28: SFs arrested a UNLF cadre, identified as Abdul Rehman alias Abbas, during a search operation at Pangal Basti in Chandel District.

  • August 26: SFs also arrested a 'lance corporal' of UNLF identified as Kshetrimayum Priyobarta alias Keirelngakpa at Thoubal Haokha in Thoubal District.

  • August 23: UNLF 'chairman' Raj Kumar Meghan was produced at NIA special court in Guwahati. The court will deliver the charge order on the Manipuri rebel leader on September 6.

  • August 21: In the backdrop of the recent report of two militants surrendering to the BSF, the UNLF has ridiculed the SFs to hoodwink the general public with such antics. A UNLF statement issued by its senior Publicity Officer Ksh Yoiheiba said, there is no cadre by the name of Boynao Simte alias Mangboi of Thanlon who allegedly surrendered before the BSF.

  • August 18: Two militant cadres, one each from the UNLF and the PULF-MA Laskar laid down their arms and ammunition. The two surrenderees have been identified as Boinao Simte alias Mangboi Simte (UNLF) and Hasan Alli (PULF MA Laskar). The arms and ammunitions handed over by the surrenderees included two .9mm pistol, two .9mm magazines and 4 live rounds and one miss fire round of .9mm ammunition.

  • August 17: The coordination committee of 7 Manipur based insurgent groups (CorCom) has declared that the people of Manipur are not Indians, were never Indians and will never be Indians. Taking strong exception to an editorial comment of a local daily lamenting the lack of public participation in Independence Day celebrations in the state the Corcom statement accused the daily of trying to be a mouthpiece of the colonial masters.

  • August 16: CorCom of seven militant outfits has claimed its hand in the series of bomb explosions which rocked the State on August 15 where two people were injured. According to a statement of the CorCom, the four explosions at near the Thoubal Mela ground (7:30am), Sagolband Salam Leikai (9 am), Telipati along the Imphal River (9:30am) and Mahabali village (10:30am) are part of its general strike in boycott of the Indian Independence.

  • August 13: The CorCom of seven valley based militant groups have condemned the bomb attack allegedly carried out by a KYKL-MDF at the residence of AMWJU president A Mobi at about 8.30pm of August 11.

  • August 11: Major militant formations operating in the Northeast called for a general strike on August 15 to boycott Independence Day celebration. However, during the strike, essential services, emergency measures, media and religious activities will be exempted. The militant formations that has called for a general strike, include CorCom of seven rebel organizations HNLC, KLO, NDFB, NLFT and ULFA-ATF.

  • August 10: CorCom, the conglomerate body of seven militant outfits namely KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK-Pro, RPF, UNLF and UPPK, has saluted the martyrs of the Anglo-Manipur War, 1891 on the occasion of Patriots Day (August 13).

  • July 5: Some movements of personnel of the Myanmar Army have been noticed in the areas where most of the militant groups of North East have their bases in the neighbouring country recently, reports Assam Tribune quoting sources. However, no operation has yet been launched against the militants. The news report further states that intelligence inputs about attempts by the Anti-Talks Faction of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-ATF) to strike before the Independence Day celebrations and the Police have been alerted to frustrate any such attempt. Sources revealed that the militants, who are now in Assam, have been directed to indulge in acts of violence, but their movements have been curbed due to operations by police and security forces in upper Assam Districts.

  • Myanmar has agreed to ask the NSCN-K to reduce strength of the Meitei militants to one-third of their current strength. This could be seen as a move to moderate Myanmar's failure to push out Manipur-based insurgents out of the country. The agreement was reached at a meeting of Union ministry of home affairs officials with a nine-member Myanmar delegation in Kolkata (West Bengal) on June 26 and 27. Another commitment of this decision was made to Indian officials in Myanmar on July 4, the source added.

  • July 2: SFs arrested two UNLF cadres in new market, Ward No.6, Moreh town in Chandel District. They were identified as Oinam Naoton Singh and Oinam Bijon singh Meitei.

  • July 1: UNLF has decried the Supreme Court for passing judgement favourable to the armed forces. A release by the outfit senior publicity officer Ksh Yoiheiba states that on March 25, 2000, five civilians were killed by the security forces alleging them as terrorist at Pathribal village on the pretext of an encounter.

  • June 30: The UNLF has alleged that the Supreme Court of India supports killing by SFs in fake encounters in Kashmir and Western South East Asia (North East India).

  • June 29: SFs arrested a UNLF cadre from Sekmai Bazar in Imphal West District at 12:30 am.

  • June 25: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre identified as N Gobin Meitei from Chingdong Leikai Ward No 7 in Chandel District. One point 32mm pistol with two live rounds was recovered from the person.

  • June 22: SFs also arrested one UNLF cadre identified as 'Sergeant Major' Lourembam Manoton Singh alias Apendra alias Sanajaoba at Kamranga Sub-Division area, Jiribam in Imphal East District. One 7.65 mm pistol (made in Italy), one magazine and three live rounds were recovered from him.

  • June 20: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre from L Slabjang village under Thinghat subdivision of Churachandpur District. He has been identified as Hari Das alias Manglemjao who reportedly deserted from Senam Camp in Myanmar on June 16. One 7.62mm pistol, three live rounds have been recovered from his possession.

  • June 17: SFs arrested two militants belonging to UNLF and KCP-Wanglen at 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm from Manipur University gate and Takyelpat respectively in Imphal West District. The two have been identified as 'captain' (UNLF) Khumukcham Naoba alias Khamtoncha and Takhelllambam Doredro Singh alias Tadoren of KCP-Wanglen group.

  • June 8: SFs arrested five militants belonging to Manipur based UNLF in Jorabat and Paltan Bazar areas of Guwahati city. The five arrested UNLF militants were identified as Waren alias Hitler of Thoubal District, Waikhom Robinson alias Yaiphakon and Samjeet Saaban Laiten alias Shantu of Lamlai in Imphal East District, Moirangthm Joy alias Robin of Bishnupur District (all in Manipur) and Lallwmpunia Champai of Mizoram. No arms and ammunition nor any document was recovered from them.

  • May 22: Reportedly whisked away by unidentified gunmen in the night of May 21 from Keibi Heikak Mapan Awang Leikai, Army men claimed to have arrested former UNLF militant Thounaojam Ratan from Bishnupur Bazar in the night and handed him over to Bishnupur Police Station. Quoting report furnished by the Army, Police source said a country made pistol and three live rounds were recovered from him

  • May 21: A former UNLF militant is reportedly untraceable after he was allegedly picked up by a group of unidentified persons from Keibi Sawombung Road in Imphal East District in the night. Thangjam Ratan alias Sana (37) was reportedly whisked away by a group of unknown armed men numbering about 10 who came in two vehicles. The whereabouts of Ratan is still not known.

  • May 5: Troops of 22nd AR arrested CorCom cadre, identified as Corporal Leitanthem Angamba alias Karnajit (25), belonging to the UNLF at Lamkhai in Jiribam, A Chinese made hand grenade, one 9mm pistol with three live rounds were recovered from his possession.

  • May 2: Terming the home coming ceremony as a 'forceful surrender of militants' staged by the O. Ibobi led Government, the UNLF, RPF, the political wing of PLA and PREPAK dismissed the surrender ceremony held at the Mantripukhri on April 30 where 103 militants belonging to different outfit reportedly surrendered.

  • April 30: 103 cadres belonging to several militant outfits operating in the State and its neighboring areas surrendered before the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh during a ceremony at Mantripukhri in Imphal West District along with their weapons. The militants who surrendered include 22 cadres of the UNLF, 20 of PULF, nine of KYKL, 14 of PREPAK, eight of KNLF, 10 of KCP, nine of PLA, four of UNPC, two of NSCN-IM, one each of NSCN-K, UPPK and KRPA and two KRF.

  • Rahul, a class seven student of Don Bosco, Chingmeirong who was allegedly abducted by a KCP on April 21 was released at Chandel District.

  • April 25: Security Forces arrested an 'Sergeant Major' of UNLF, identified as A Athouba, with arms from near Jiri Bazar in Imphal East District. A .9 pistol with one live round of ammunition was recovered from his possession.

  • April 23: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Ningthoujam Houburemba alias from Kumbi Uyung Makhong of Bishnupur District.

  • April 21: SFs arrested one 'sergeant major' of UNLF, identified as Angom Premjit alias Athouba alias Raju, from Jiribam bazar along with one 9mm pistol and a live round.

  • April 20: SFs arrested two UNLF suspects, identified as Longjam Tomchou and Khaidem Mani, along with one country made .32 pistol from Ningthempam in Jiribam area of Imphal East District.

  • April 18: Security Forces arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Yendrenbam Akupi alias Boitomba alias Ibohal, in Wangjing area of Thoubal District. One .9 mm Pistol along with magazine and three live rounds were recovered from his possession.

  • April 12: UNLF Laurembam Iwanthaba alias N. Nanao Singh, has jumped bail and fled to Myanmar by giving Assam Police a slip. The report states that Nanao Singh was able to hide his real identity from the State Police. Notably, Singh is on the wanted list of the NIA and currently believed to be hiding somewhere in Myanmar. Singh was arrested by Guwahati City Police from a rented house in Panbazar area of the city on October 12, 2010.

  • April 4: SFs arrested one UNLF militant from Wabagai Kadaichit of Thoubal District. The militant was identified as 'corporal' Akoijam Jilagamba Singh alias Angacha (31).

  • April 3: SFs arrested one militant each of the PLA and UNLF from Keinou village area of Bishnupur District. While the PLA militant was identified as 'Lance Corporal' Premjit alias Zauglem, the UNLF militant was identified as as 'Lance Corporal' Soibam Inatombi alias Saranacha.

  • March 25: India has moved Bangladesh with a request to track financial assets belonging to the UNLF, in that country. Investigating agencies have evidence that suggest that UNLF chief R.K. Meghen had amassed assets in Bangladesh with money extorted from Manipur. India and Bangladesh had signed a mutual legal assistance treaty last year which allows transfer of each other's sentenced prisoners so that the convicts can complete the rest of their jail term in the prisons of their own country. NIA has also come across evidence that suggest that the UNLF leadership had held two meetings in China in 2009. The first meeting was on January 18, 2009, and the second was on September 28, 2009, at Rulli in China.

  • March 23: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Samandram Banerjee Meitei Nongbam, in Kakching Bazar of Thoubal District on March 23. A .32 Pistol was recovered from him.

  • March 22: A suspected militant identified as Khangembam Naocha, who was killed by SFs in Bishnupur District on March 21, turned out to be former UNLF militant.

  • March 20: One alleged UNLF cadre, identified as 'captain' Khwairakpam Amit alias Kulajit, was arrested from Dholakhal in Imphal East District.

  • SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as 'sergeant major' Kshetrimayum Loichangba alias Amarjeet from Sagolband Tera Loukrakpam Leikai in Imphal West District. One .9mm pistol with four live rounds, two mobile phones, one external hard disc and one digital camera were recovered from him.

  • March 14: The NIA in its investigation into the illegal activities the UNLF revealed that it has invested a huge amount of money in various business ventures in the UK. The UNLF, with the help of two of its sympathisers, including a Bangladeshi national, had formed a company named South East Asia Conglomerate Private Limited in 2006 with its office at Elton House in Durham in England and nominated its 'chief', R.K. Meghen, as one of the directors. The NIA claims to have collected evidence of the UNLF investing money accumulated through illegal means, including extortions, in the construction of a market complex in New Delhi, a food park project at Neelkuthi in Manipur, a fruit processing unit at Mantripukhri in Imphal and a taxi-way near Imphal airport. It has alleged that the registered society which runs the fruit processing unit AEGIS is a frontal organisation of the UNLF.

  • March 9: A top cadre of UNLF, identified as Khwairakpam Romesh was arrested by SFs from Ningombam Phuramakhong in Imphal West District. One .9 mm pistol along with a magazine containing two live rounds was seized from his possession. It was revealed that Nanao joined UNLF in 2008 and got basic military training in Myanmar and worked under the command of one Wanglen. Based on the disclosure made by the militant, Police on March 10 alleged that he was among the UNLF cadres who transported about 230 AK-47 and 56 rifles for NSCN-K in December 2009. He was also involved in an ambush on SFs in Ukhrul District in 2009, Police said.

    SFs arrested a militant belonging to UNLF, identified as P Gyaneshwar (25), at Dibong in Jiribam.

  • March 6: SFs arrested one cadre of the proscribed UNLF identified as 'Sergeant Major' Sagolsem Pamuba alias Surchandra from Hilghat in Imphal East District.

  • NIA filed a supplementary charge sheet in a case registered against the militant group UNLF at the NIA special court in Guwahati.. Three of those charge sheeted are Y. Brojobidhu Singh, N. Bomi Singh, A. Ibomcha Singh the trio are lodged in Guwahati Central Jail following their arrest from Manipur in January 2012.These three were office-holders of a registered society called AEGIS in Manipur, where the UNLF had allegedly invested the money they had extorted from individuals and business houses. The three absconding accused in the case are N. Nardip Singh alias Thabal, C.H. Tanil alias Nabachandra and L. Iwanthaba alias Nanao Singh.

  • March 4: SFs arrested one cadre each of the UNLF and PREPAK outfits from Jiribam sub-division areas in Imphal East District. The UNLF cadre has been identified as L Jayenta and the PREPAK cadre as Irom Monal Singh alias Sanjiv.

  • February 28: One over ground worker of UNLF, identified as Thingom Levis (30), was arrested from Babupara in Jiribam in Imphal East District.

  • February 26: SFs also arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as B Murgan, from Moreh in Chandel District. One USA made .9mm Pistol with five live rounds was recovered from him.

  • February 22: A team of Imphal East commando brought back a 'lieutenant' of UNLF identified as Takhellambam Apabi who was arrested by Mizoram Police from Vairengte in Kolasib District on February 12.

  • February 15: Six cadres belonging to three different outfits surrendered with arms at a ceremony held at 116th battalion in Ningthoukhong of Bishnupur District. The surrendered militants are 'lance corporal' Solendro alias Inaoton, Amarjit alias Mangaljao, Thangcha alias Lupheng, 'corporal' Tungdim Jangam alias Mangboi Zou, all belonging to UNLF, and L Naobi of PLA and Hamish, 'publicity secretary' of PULF. The cadres surrendered five pistols and one carbine along with assorted ammunition.

  • February 8: Greeting the people on the 25th anniversary of MPA the armed wing of UNLF, the Central Committee of the outfit asserted that the armed struggle is the pivot on which the revolutionary struggle should rest.

  • SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Mutum Romesh Singh alias Khunthiba, in Khongjom Maning Leikai in Thoubal District.

  • February 2: SFs arrested a top militant belonging to UNLF, identified as 'Captain' Surajit Singh alias Pradip Singh, from Hojai in Nagaon District. A laptop, some hard disks and documents were recovered from him.

  • January 30: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Sanjoi Singh, from Bishnupur District.

  • January 29: SFs arrested a cadre of UNLF, identified as M Devachandra, from Laphupat Tera Mayai Leikai area in Imphal West District.

  • January 29: KPLT has established links with UNLF and KYKL for training the new cadres. The report further states that almost all the Northeast outfit have abundance of Chinese weapons and bases in Taga area of Myanmar. Further, the major militant outfits are now supplying weapons to the smaller outfits and Dimapur (Nagaland) has emerged as a weapons hub.

  • January 27: SFs arrested two UNLF cadres from Tuibong area in Churachandpur District.

  • January 23: SFs arrested an UNLF cadre, M Meghachandra alias Liklangamba, from Heirok-II in Thoubal District.

  • January 19: Alleging that different Indian agencies have been pursuing several strategies against the UNLF, the outfit, reacting to a claim of the NIA which reportedly projected the outfit as a group of extortionist, asserted that it was part of India's propaganda warfare.

  • January 17: SFs arrested a UNLF cadre, identified as Amom Atorrba alias Romeo, from Sangram Wangu area in Thoubal District.

  • A probe carried out by the NIA reveals that the UNLF outfit earned around INR 1.5 billion between 2007 and 2010 through extortion. Besides UNLF, many other terror outfits are also extorting money in the State. According to NIA sources, one part of the proceeds from extortion has been used by the outfit to procure arms and ammunition and other part was invested by it in genuine business. "Most of the funds come from contractors who execute various central and state government schemes," said source. The probe agency has arrested three top UNLF cadres, N Bomi Singh, Y Brojobidhu Singh and A Ibomcha Singh, who were allegedly part of the conspiracy to launder money into businesses. According to NIA, the trio held different positions in the Association for Extensive Growers Innovative Service.

  • January 16: SFs arrested one cadre of UNLF identified as Phuritsabam Ghambeishing Singh, in Thoubal District.

  • January 14: Two bombs exploded near the polling camp of Congress located at Wangoo under Thoubal District while another powerful bomb went off at Yumnam Leikai, despite the presence of six companies of SFs. However, there were no casualties. CorCom claimed responsibility for the Yumnam Leikai blast. Police has launched a search operation in Yumnam Laikai Nambul Mapan area.

  • January 12: CorCom of seven valley based militant group claimed that it was behind the act of setting ablaze the INC office at Umathel Makha Leikai on January 8 and also the recent attack on INC workers and supports.

  • January 11: SFs arrested one UNLF militant, identified as Laishram Nabamacha (23) alias Samaiba, from New Check in Imphal East District.

  • January 8: The CorCom of seven valley based militant groups has claimed responsibility for the all the recent blasts and Jiribam INC office arson in Imphal East District. The CorCom comprises of the KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK-P, RPF, UNLF and UPPK.

  • January 4: In a statement, the CorCom of seven militant groups said that contesting on (NC tickets, campaigning and organizing rallies for the INC were banned. It said anyone defying the ban would be punished. The CorCom comprises of the KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK-P, RPF, UNLF and UPPK. A spokesperson of CorCom claimed that it had masterminded a series of blasts across the place.

2011

  • December 23: One UNLF militant, identified as Takhellambam Dinesh alias Iyamcha Singh (33), from Chanam Sandrok Awang Leikai.

  • December 20: UNLF claimed that its armed wing MPA militants ambushed troops of 17 Assam Rifles at Nambashi under Kasom Khullen sub-division in Ukhrul District. It also claimed that more than 10 AR personnel suffered casualties in the ambush. It further claimed responsibility for the ambush against troops of 36 AR at Old Somtal in Chandel District at around 10.30 am of November 15.

  • December 19: An intense gun battle took place between SFs and unidentified militants near Nambashi under Kasom Khullen Sub-Division of Ukhrul District.

  • December 6: SFs arrested a UNLF cadre identified as Nanao alias Rome alias Chamjaba in Changamdabi under Yairipok Police station in Imphal East District. A .32 carbine and a magazine were seized from him.

  • December 5: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Meghachandra Singh alias Loitomba, during an operation launched at Umathel area in Thoubal District.

  • November 29: SFs arrested one militant belonging to UNLF identified as Thangjam Rajesh alias Inao Abung alias Sekmaichaoba alias Loungakpa Singh from Yumnam Khunou of Ukhrul District.

  • The Coordination Committee of KCP, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK-Progressive, RPF, UNLF and UPPK has called a 36-hour general strike starting from 4 am of December 3 to 4 pm of December 4, to boycott the visit of Prime Minister and UPA chairperson to the State capital.

  • November 23: On the eve of its 47th raising day anniversary, the Central Committee of UNLF reaffirmed UNLF's commitment to sustain the armed struggle for 'change and liberation' till the goals are achieved.

  • November 19: SFs arrested one cadre of the UNLF identified as Khundongbam Ibosana Singh alias Udaba at Wangjing bazar in Thoubal District. One .9mm pistol loaded with four live rounds of 9mm and two hand grenades with detonators were recovered from him.

  • SFs arrested a cadre of UNLF from Khudengthabi of Chandel District.

  • November 16: The UNLF, in a statement, has clarified that the person who was killed by Thoubal Police commandos at Iroi Lok in Thoubal District on November 15 while rescuing the abducted secretary of State Security Service is not related to the UNLF. It further added that no cadre of the outfit was involved in the act of abducting the secretary.

  • November 15: SFs killed a suspected cadre of UNLF in a gunbattle that ensued when SFs conducted an operation at Andro Iroi Lok under Thoubal District to rescue an abducted employee of the State Security Service (SSS). One .32 pistol with magazine loaded with two live rounds and one hand grenade was recovered from the slain militant. Moreover, 15 numbers of empty cases of AK Rifles were also recovered from the site. The rescued victim disclosed that he was abducted by unknown armed youths at gun point from Yairipok who identified themselves as members of the UNLF on November 13. He was believed to have been abducted in connection with monetary demand imposed on the SSS security guard company.

  • November 13: Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh is reportedly the next target of UNLF. According to the report, UNLF is miffed with the Chief Minister over the recent conflicts in the State on the issue of AFSPA and the economic blockade. UNLF is said to have asked its functionaries based in Thoubal District to target Ibobi and do the needful. However, reacting strongly to the report, UNLF has denied any such motive.

  • November 8: SFs arrested one 'lieutenant' of UNLF, identified as Chabungbam Kiran alias Naotomba (36), from Ngamuthong Awang Leikai in Thoubal District. One .32 Pistol was recovered from him.

  • SFs arrested a female cadre of the UNLF, identified as Poornima Devi (45), from Panghang in Thoubal District.

  • November 4: SFs arrested two UNLF militants, identified as Okram Bobo alias Angongakpan (22) and Thounaojam Bachan alias Achouba (28), from Phayeng, near Don Bosco School in Imphal West District.

  • November 1: SFs arrested a cadre of UNLF, identified as Sapam Joy Singh, from Moreh Bazaar. He disclosed to have joined the outfit in June through one Deven. One .9 mm pistol loaded with two live bullets was seized from his possession.

  • October 30: Security Forces arrested one cadre of UNLF identified as M Amarjeet Singh alias Enao (26) from Moirang in Bishnupur District.

  • October 23: SFs arrested one UNLF militant identified as Thoyam Robin alias Naobi (28) near Iroisemba Bridge in Imphal West District.

  • October 18: SFs arrested a UNLF linkman identified as Animesh Purkasthya, from his rented house in link Road area of Silchar Town in Assam.

  • October 13: SFs arrested one UNLF militant from the Singjamei Thongam Leikai in Imphal West. He disclosed that he joined the outfit in the year 2004 through one Sinam Somendro alias William alias Ibungomacha of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai and has been working under his command.

  • October 9: A top militant belonging to UNLF surrendered before the BSF in Imphal. The name of the surrendered militant was withheld for security reasons, but in his interaction with media, he said he was not satisfied living with the group and decided join mainstream society. "I was not satisfied living there, and I wanted to quit, so I quit it. I did not like what was happening there, so I came out. (After the arrest of Meghen) many have diffracted and I am also one of them. His break up took place near the border area of Myanmar and Manipur," the militant said. Acute poverty and family tension drove the militant to join the UNLF in January 2004.

  • October 7: A 'town commander' of UNLF, identified as 'lieutenant' Yengkhom Sietabal alias Ingobi (36), was killed during a gunfight between SFs and UNLF militants at Nambol Kamong Mayai Leikai under Bishnupur District during the intervening night of October 6-7. Sources claimed that other militants taking advantage of the darkness fled from the incident site. The troops also recovered one .9mm pistol loaded with 11 live rounds from the possession of the dead militant.

  • September 29: The NIA is ready to file its second chargesheet against the UNLF.

  • September 26: Judge of Special NIA court, Adhir Kumer Das rejected the NIA's plea to shift the jailed 'chairman' of the UNLF, Rajkumar Meghen, from Guwahati Central Jail to the Tihar Jail in Delhi on security grounds.

  • September 14: According to NSCN-K sources, at least one cadre each from NSCN-K and UNLF were killed as their camps were heavily attacked by the Myanmar Army in Sagaing division. "Myanmar military has carried out a midnight attack on NSCN and UNLF camps in northern Sagaing division last night," envoy to the collective leadership of NSCN-K Kughalu Mulatonu told The Telegraph over phone from his hideout. He said at least three army personnel were killed. "Casualty would be high on the Myanmar military side," he claimed. He said S.S. Khaplang, chairman of the NSCN-K, is still safe at his council headquarters, heavily guarded by his cadres.

  • Mulatonu said it would take time for the military to attack Khaplang's headquarters but in anticipation of assault the Naga outfit has also mobilised cadres in the area. He said, in June the Government of India supplied over 60 truckloads of arms and ammunition to Myanmar. The shipment of arms and ammunition were transported to Manipur. He said the Nagas may lose the battle this time but not the war. NSCN-K sources said there had been heavy mobilisation of Myanmar army in divisional headquarters in Khamfi, Namjung and Mytkhina.

  • September 11: In a boost for Indian security concerns, the Myanmar army launched a second offensive in Sagaing province against various Indian militant groups, including ULFA, who have their bases there.

  • Around 250 cadres of about 10 North-Eastern militant outfits, including ULFA-ATF, NSCN-K, PLA, PREPAK and UNLF, were present in camps at Sagaing in North Myanmar bordering India. Sources said the militant outfits have sent about 200 armed cadres as reinforcement to Myanmar.

  • September 10: SFS arrested one top UNLF militant identified as Oinam Dinesh from Imphal East District.

  • September 9: The NIA wants to shift Raj Kumar Meghen alias Sana Yaima, chief of UNLF, from Guwahati Central Jail to the high-security Tihar jail in New Delhi. An official source said the investigating agency had written to the Union Home Ministry for shifting the rebel leader to the Tihar Jail citing "security concerns".

  • September 7: Altogether 29 militants, including 23 from five armed Naga groups, laid down their arms and surrendered to the Army authority at Leimakhong in Imphal West District. They also handed over 28 weapons including four Kalashnikov rifles, 16 pistols, one Lathode grenade launcher, 645 rounds of ammunition along with 21 magazines and two radio sets to the Army authority.

  • The surrendered militants includes seven cadres each of NSCN-Khole and FGN, six cadres of NSCN-Khaplang, three cadres of PULF, two cadres each of UNLF and NNC and one each of NSCN-Isak-Muivah and KYKL.

  • September 1: Six militants - four from UNLF and one each from KYKL and NSCN-K surrendered in a ceremony held at 116 Battalion, BSF Loktak Project in Bishnupur District.

  • While the UNLF militants were identified as Lian Khosiam alias Siam Boi, Promolin alias Papao, N. Gul Khochon alias Ngamsei and Soubam Somen alias Ningaidaba of Heinoulok, the KYKL and NSCN-K militants were identified as Laisram Akang Singh alias Abungcha and Digai alias David respectively. One .303 Rifle along with a Magazine, three.9mm pistol including with its magazines, 2 Chinese made hand grenade, one Radio set and 15 live ammunitions were recovered from them.

  • August 24: SFs arrested a UNLF militant, identified as Khumanthem Domendro (26), from Terakhongsangbi in the District.

  • August 23: SFs arrested a cadre of UNLF, identified as Luwanthem Jackson alias Umphaba Singh (24), from Moreh Gate number 2 in Imphal West District.

  • August 9: Sixteen militants of different out fits laid down arms in a surrender ceremony at the Assam Rifles headquarter at Mantripukhri. The surrendered militants include three from the UNLF, two from PREPAK, four from PRA, two from UTLA, three from PULF and one each from Oken faction of KYKL and KCP-Noyon. They surrendered six AK Rifles, two M-16 Rifles, one each US made Carbine and Lathode, three 9 mm pistol, one each .32 mm pistol, .38 mm revolver and M-22 pistol and a large amount of ammunition.

  • August 1: SFs arrested two militants of UNLF identified as Heisnam Ibungo alias Bungo (27) and Rk Tomba Singh (34) from near Pishum Oinam Leikai Lairembi in Imphal West District.

  • July 27: SFs arrested one UNLF militant identified as Thongram Joy Singh (42) from Okram near Okram Chuthek in Imphal East District.

  • July 25: SFs arrested a UNLF cadre, identified as Thongam Ngogo alias Bobu (27) from Khurai Lai Khulembi along Imphal-Ukhrul road in Imphal East District.

  • July 23: SFs arrested an overground worker of UNLF from Sagolmang in Imphal East District.

  • July 15: SFs arrested a cadre of UNLF, identified as Ton alias Langwonba alias Lemba (22), from Naoremthong Bazar in Imphal West District. On spot verification, he disclosed that he joined the outfit in 2009 through one 'Corporal' Yoiheiba and received basic military training in Eastern Nagaland.

  • July 13: At a time when the SFs have intensified their counter-insurgency operations in Manipur, seven militant groups of the state have joined hands and set up a coordinating committee, states Times of India. The committee formation followed a two-day joint meeting of the top leaders of the seven outfits - UNLF, RPF, KYKL, PREPAK, PREPAK-Progressive, the UPPK and KCP.

  • RPF 'president' Irengbam Chaoren has been nominated as the convener of the newly-formed coordinating committee.

    The joint press statement was signed by Ksh Laba Meitei, KCP president, N Oken (general secretary KYKL), N Nongdrenkhomba (PREPAK chairman), I Chaoren (RPF president), Kh Pambei ('acting chairman UNLF), L Paliba (chairman, PREPAK - Pro) and Laanngamba Luwang (chairman UPPK).

  • July 4: One militant of UNLF, identified as one private Lishangkham Nonguk alias Shantikumar (30), was arrested from Moirang SIribol in Bishnupur District.

  • July 3: SFs arrested one cadre of the UNLF, identified as one Ningthoujam Birjit Singh alias Naocha (25), from Porompat JNIMS crossing. On further verification, he disclosed to have provided shelter to cadres of the UNLF and has further helped in transportation of arms and ammunition with another associate identified as Irom Tombi Singh.

  • June 22: SFs arrested two UNLF cadres, identified as Muhammad Tomba (22) and Tazimur Rehman (22), from Khudengthabi area of Chandel District. One AK 56 rifle, two mobile phones and INR 1,100 were recovered from them.

  • May 3: SFs arrested a cadre of UNLF, identified as Wangkhem Deven alias Chingnamba (32), from the market in Bishnupur District.

  • April 28: SFs arrested one woman cadre of UNLF, identified as Laishram Bidyapati alias Ichangbi alias Amurai alias Sonia (24), from Terakhong Sangbi Mamang Leikai village in Bishnupur District. She revealed that she had recently returned from a UNLF camp in Myanmar.

  • April 20: UNLF charged NSCN-IM Supremo Th Muivah of carrying out petty communal politics. He is being scorned by other communities for his narrow minded approach and has brought nothing but sowed ill feelings among the residents of the state, a press release by Ksh Yoiheba, senior publicity office of the UNLF stated. Though the different approaches executed by Muivah to sow disharmony among the different communities including the Kuki and the Meetei have failed and this frustrates the NSCN (IM) leader.

  • UNLF 'chairman' R. K. Meghen has stated that proposal of UNLF for holding plebiscite to resolve the Manipur-India conflict is not an objective but only a means for achieving the objective of empowering the people. Talking to media on the sideline of being produced in the special court of NIA at Guwahati, Meghen said that the ongoing campaign for holding plebiscite being witnessed in Manipur including one of the hill Districts is encouraging and such democratic process of public discussion on the issue is required.

  • March 24: Eight activists of different militant organizations surrendered at the Mantripukhri headquarters of IGAR-S in Imphal West District. The surrendered cadres include Gopal Sharma alias Laimkaiba (25) and Hemanta alias Manimatum (20) of UNLF, Jelen Khangebam alias Boni (25) of PREPAK, Kabi Kanta alias Thoiba (20) of KCP-MTF, Amom Rajesh alias Raju Singh (18) and L. Thoi alias Tomba singh (18) of UPPK, Angom Naocha Meitei (20) second in-command (Finance Section) of KCP-MC-Lamyanba Khuman and Konjengbam Manoranjan Singh alias Sanjit (22) of the same faction. Weapons handed over to the security officers included seven pistols with magazines and huge quantity of live rounds, six lethod bombs, one hand grenade, one Kenwood set and five detonators.

  • March 16: Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh,has described the proposal of UNLF for holding a plebiscite to resolve the Indo-Manipur conflict as a good sign in the State Assembly.

  • March 11: Manipur Assembly opposition leader Radhabinod Koijam of the NCP said that shuffling of UNLF ‘Chairman’ Sana Yaima alias RK Meghen to and fro from NIA Special Court at Guwahati for trial, would not be conducive for any political dialogue with the outfit and to resolve the conflict situation in Manipur. The rebel leader should be placed in a house or a bungalow before initiating any dialogue process, Radhabinod Koijam added.

  • March 3: SFs arrested two UNLF militants, identified as Leishungbam Akber Singh alias Roshan (29) and Elangbam Ajit Singh (41), and near Khoyathong Traffic Island in Imphal West District.

  • February 24: one UNLF-MPA cadre, identified as Lance Corporal Amom Kunjeshore alias Nganba (25), was arrested by SFs at Bishnupur Bazar in Bishnupur District.

  • February 21: The jailed ‘chairman’ of the UNLF, Rajkumar Meghen alias Sanayaima, on February 21 renewed the offer made to the Centre that the outfit would lay down arms before United Nations authorities if the Centre allowed a plebiscite in Manipur in the presence of UN representatives and arrange for the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in the State. Meghen said, "Before the plebiscite is held, the Army and paramilitary forces should be withdrawn and the UN peacekeeping forces should be deployed. The UNLF will deposit arms to the UN authorities on a date prior to the plebiscite and will abide by whatever decision the people give. The UN authorities should hand over power in accordance with the verdict. It is the only way to resolve the conflict." "The UNLF is not waging a war against the Centre but is struggling for the restoration of the State's sovereignty," Meghen added.

    SFs arrested two UNLF militants, identified as Kh. Sushil Singh (28) and Winerjit Singh (20) from Singjamei in Imphal East District. One .32 mm Pistol with magazine and two live rounds were recovered from them.

  • February 19: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre,identified as one Wangkheimayum Malemnganba alias Khullinga Meitei (31) from Wangkheimayum Leirak in Imphal East District.

  • February 16: Two militants, one each from KYKL and UNLF were arrested from Tera Sapam Leikai in Imphal West District.

  • February 15: National Investigation Agency filed charge-sheet against 10 members of the UNLF of Manipur in the Special Court of NIA in Guwahati for their involvement in waging war against the country, raising funds by resorting to large scale extortion from Government as well as private bodies in Manipur and for trying to procure arms and ammunition from foreign countries. The chargesheeted persons include the UNLF ‘chairman’ R K Meghen alias Saniyama, who is currently in judicial custody. The investigation conducted by NIA revealed that UNLF made some attempts to procure weapons with the help of some Chinese origin people.

  • February 14: SFs arrested a UNLF militant from Komlathabi area in Chandel District.

  • February 5: Arrested UNLF ‘chairman’ RK Meghen alias Sanayaima said that the proposed unconditional talks between the ULFA and the Government of India is not going to have any impact on the liberation movement in Manipur.

  • February 1: SFs arrested three militants belonging to UNLF, KYKL and PREPAK. The arrests were made from Thangmeiband Lairen Sangjaba in Imphal West District, Thangmeiband Sijam Leikai and Mayanglangjing in Lamsang respectively.

  • January 29: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Postshangbam Netaji (21), in general area of Mayang Imphal and was handed over to Mayang Police station.

  • January 24: UNLF 'Chairman' R.K. Meghen alias Sanayaima was produced before the Special Court of the NIA at Guwahati for the fourth time which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days till February 7, 2011. Along with Meghen, five other arrested leaders of UNLF, Identified as Nongyai alias Joy, S. Ramesh, M. Landhoni and M. Ibohal who were charged as UNLF cadres and Dilip Nath of Guwahati, who was arrested on charge of providing shelter to UNLF cadres, were also produced before the NIA Special Court and the Court ordered them to appear before it on February 7.

  • An aide of the 'self style' medical in-charge 'major' Achouba of UNLF, identified as Khomdram Bunta Singh alias Roshan (40), was arrested along with one .38 pistol marked as B05675 and a magazine loaded with seven live rounds of bullet from Tendongyang bus shed along the NH-39 under Sekmai Police station.

  • January 17: Thokchon Nanao Singh belonging to UNLF surrendered to SFs at Mantripukhri in Imphal West District.

  • January 11: The UNLF chairman R.K. Meghen alias Sanayaima said after exiting from the NIA court complex at Pan Bazar in Guwahati that there is a need for a united demand from all the insurgent groups as well as from the general public for holding a plebiscite to decide the issue of integration of Manipur with India.

2010

  • December 28: The UNLF asserted that New Delhi has no right to put its Chairman Sanayaima on trial. Stating that he was a freedom fighter struggling to re-establish the lost sovereignty of Manipur, the outfit claimed that Indian Court cannot put Sanayaima on trial.

  • December 27: SFs arrested one over ground worker of UNLF, identified as Saikhom Yaima Singh alias Inao (28), resident of Heidhopokpi Maning Lekai, Heirok Path, Thoubal District. The arrested militant revealed that he was involved in recruitment, ‘tax’ collection and extortion for the outfit from Joipur Khunau and nearby areas.

  • December 20: UNLF cadre Yumnam Romeo alias Panthung surrendered.

  • December 17: At least six AR soldiers sustained injuries when the UNLF militants ambushed a patrolling party in an area between Tuitang and Sehlon village in Chandel District. A UNLF statement issued by its ‘senior publicity officer’ Ksh Yoiheiba said attack was a fitting response given to the visit of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s visit to Manipur.

  • December 13: Troops of 4/8 Gorkha Rifles arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Ningthoujam Surjit alias Nganlamba (22), from Nachou in Bishnupur District.

  • November 30: The UNLF ‘chairman’ Rajkumar Meghen, who went missing after being reportedly caught in Bangladesh about two months ago, was arrested at Motihari in Bihar. ‘’A joint Police team from Manipur and Bihar arrested Meghen from near Chhatauni Chowk. Manipur Police AIG C P Mina identified the militant leader,’’ East Champaran Superintendent of Police (SP) Paras Nath said. Meghen had taken shelter near the India-Nepal border to avoid Police action. No arms were found on him. Confirming Meghen’s arrest, additional SP (Imphal West) A K Jhaljit Singh said, ‘’I have received a message from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) that the UNLF chairman was arrested in Motihari.’’ Meghen was produced in the court of Motihari Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Madusudan Tiwari. He was later taken to Imphal on a three-day transit remand.

  • November 23: The Central Committee of the UNLF on the occasion of its '46th birth anniversary' said that the party stands resolute in upholding its goal of dismantling the structure of oppressive "Indian occupation" to liberate the people from colonial yoke. In its annual statement, the UNLF's apex decision making body said although unfortunate at the loss of the able stewardship of its chairman, R. K. Sana Yaima, the organisational resilience acquired in its 46 years of armed struggle, is nothing to be undermined, and this can would take the struggle forward towards its goal of restructuring the collective political destiny of Manipur.

  • November 22: Another team of the Imphal East Police arrested one UNLF cadre identified as Huidrom Bashu alias maimu Meitei (20) from the Checkon area. He disclosed that he joined the outfit in the year 2005 through one Mani of Yumnam Patlou and was involved in extortion of money from the general public and transportation of party arms and ammunition.

  • November 15: Troops of 28 AR apprehended a UNLF militant from Kanchipur bazaar in Imphal West District. The militant was identified as H Gyaneshwar Singh (68) of Singjamei Chirom Leikai. He was handed over to Singjamei Police Station.

  • November 14: A two-judge Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court sent a first motion notice to the chairman of NHRC, New Delhi, to be relayed to Union Government and Manipur Government for instruction on the disclosure of the whereabouts of UNLF ‘chairman’ R.K. Meghen alias R.K. Sanayaima who was reportedly arrested from Bangladesh on September 29 last, but since then there is no information on his whereabouts. His wife, R.K. Ibemnungshi, had filed a writ petition to the Imphal Bench of the Gauhati High Court on October 29 seeking for the revelation of her husband’s whereabouts at the earliest invoking humanitarian and International laws.

  • November 14: The troops of 26 AR along with Imphal West Police arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Nungthongbam Jamesjet alias James alias Thoi (30), from Phayeng. He confessed his involvement in 'tax' collection and money collection for the outfit from Imphal East District and surrounding areas. He was handed over to Lamsang Police Station.

  • November 11: A militant of the UNLF, identified as Laishram Rishikanta of Koiram village in Thoubal District, reportedly surrendered before 12 AR along with one 9 mm pistol, 39 live rounds and one live round of AK 47 at Nampisha in Ukhrul District.

  • November 4: Police and 21 AR arrested a UNLF cadre, identified as Angom Atomba alias Romeo alias Leishemba (25) from Thoubal District. Police also recovered a Chinese hand grenade from his possession.

  • October 29: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as ‘lance corporal’ Sana Takhellambam (30) from Saiton Khunou in Imphal West District. He confessed to have been involved in a number of incidents of attacks on SFs and undergone training in 2001.

    A cadre of the UNLF identified as Chesham Jtaem Ali (33) was arrested by SFs from Kairang area in Imphal East District.

    Two UNLF cadres, identified as Ojit Sharma (37) and Arunkumar (41) were apprehended by troops of 21 AR and 23 AR during a search operation in Lamjao area of Ukhrul District. They were handed over to Kakching Police Station in Thoubal District together with 12 live rounds of AK 47 and nine detonators seized from them.

  • October 18: A team of the Thoubal District Police arrested a cadre of the UNLF, identified as Moirangthem Jiten Singh (33) at Tangjeng on NH 39.

    Troops of the 23 Assam Rifles arrested another UNLF cadre identified as one Nongtongbom alias Pungpham (22), from Ishikha village in the District.

  • October 16: The Vice Chairperson of the UNLF, Kh Pambei, issued a press statement confirming the news of the arrest of UNLF Chairman R. K. Meghen in Bangladesh. According to the statement, Meghen was travelling in his own vehicle (Dhaka Metro G-17-0716) in Lalmatia area of Dhaka under Mohammadpur Police Station at about 12.30pm (BST) of September 29 when he was arrested.

  • October 15: One militant, identified as Moirangthem Ngouba (32) was killed in a gun battle with the Security Forces (SFs) that ensued during a search operation at Langathel in Khongjom area of Thoubal District. One AK-series assault rifle with magazine, 10 live ammunitions of AK Rifle, one Chinese made hand grenade and one driving license in the name of Ngouba were recovered from near the body of the slain militant. The family members of Ngouba said that he was once a member of the UNLF, but had been discharged on medical ground. They also said Ngouba had been missing since October 13.

    A combined team of 33 AR and Bishnupur District Police arrested one woman over ground cadre of the UNLF, identified as Maipakpi Devi (39) from Moirang Khunou.

    Security Forces arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as Salam Yaima Singh alias Mera (35), from Thoubal District.

  • October 14: SFs arrested one cadre of the UNLF, identified as ‘lance corporal’ Ningthoujam Jeevan alias Yaishkul (35), from the house of one Hajarimayum Medha Devi of Khwai Brahmapur Nagamapal Laimayum Leirak in Imphal West District Police. Ningthoujam Jeevan declared himself to have joined the outfit through one Tonsana of the UNLF and working under one Tomba of the outfit.

    A top ranking intelligence officer in New Delhi said there is no truth in UNLF ‘chairman’, R.K. Meghen, having been extradited from Bangladesh to India already. "We are awaiting official confirmation of the arrest from the Bangladesh government" he said.

  • October 13: The UNLF ‘chairman’, Rajkumar Meghen alias Sanayaima, was arrested in Bangladesh on an unspecified date in October 2010, senior Indian officials said. He was subsequently handed over to India. Officials said Meghen had moved to Dhaka from his hideout in Myanmar’s Sagaing Division to line up an arms deal. However, an MHA official said that they have received information about the arrest of the UNLF leader but had no information that he was handed over to the Government of India.

    Thoubal District Police arrested one woman over ground worker of the UNLF, identified as Phuritsabam Apabi alias Indubala (30), from the general area of Salungpham village.

  • October 12: Thoubal District Police arrested one cadre and one sympathiser of the UNLF from Salungpham area. While the cadre was identified as Thongam Bisho Singh, the sympathiser was Sarangthem Chaoba Devi (34).

  • October 4: A UNLF cadre, Yumlembam Gopin Singh alias Leibakhomba (35), was arrested by the Imphal East District Police from New Checkon. He disclosed that he joined the outfit in December 1996 through one Nongal and He was Involved in extortion of money from the general public and Government and traders.

  • October 3: A UNLF cadre, Ramananda Singh alias Commando (21), was arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel. One live round of AK-47 was recovered from him. He was also handed over to Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East District.

  • September 21: BSF troops of the Assam and Meghalaya frontier killed four militants of ULFA and Military Council of the KLNLF, arrested 17 militants belonging to the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), KLNLF, People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Military Council faction of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), UNLF, MULTA and Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) among others. They also got nine militants of ULFA, NDFB and All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA) to surrender along with arms and ammunition.

  • September 8: Two UNLF cadres were arrested by the Police in Guwahati. They were identified as self-styled 'lieutenant colonel' Ningombam Dilip Singh alias Ibochou alias Moni, and self-styled 'captain' Jatishor Sing. Two laptops, eight cellular phones, five extra subscriber identity module (SIM) cards, three pen drives, three Internet data cards, two ATM cards (present bank status INR 3,58,046), a handycam, a digital camera, a Sony digital camera and INR 365,000 in cash were recovered from the possession of the militants.

  • September 4: The militant shot dead in a reported encounter with a combined force of the Thoubal District Police and Assam Rifles in the night of August 31 at Ngariyan Chingkhong was a UNLF cadre Moirangthem Thomas (24). He joined the UNLF around six years back.

  • September 3: Tripura Police Chief Pranay Sahaya said that with crackdowns on the camps in neighbouring Bangladesh, militants of the Northeast are now shifting base to Myanmar. Outfits like ULFA, KLNLF and UNLF have already shifted their bases to Myanmar which has a 1650 kilometre long border with India, according to reports, the DGP said. The DGP said the Centre has already taken up with the Myanmar Government the issue of their soil being used by insurgents from Northeast India.

  • August 27: Three more United National Liberation Front (UNLF) cadres, who were arrested at Guwahati by a combined force of Central Forces and Assam Police on August 19, were brought back to Imphal.

  • August 26: Out of the 11 suspected cadres of the UNLF who were arrested at Guwahati Assam on August 18, seven cadres were brought back to Imphal. The cadres, including a 'lieutenant colonel', were brought back by a team of Imphal West District Police.

  • August 21: An UNLF cadre, Surjit Singh (31), was arrested by a combined force of the Thoubal District Police and Assam Rifles in and around Tentha Khunjao. He revealed that he worked for the UNLF under the ‘command’ of one Sapam Mohon Singh of Tentha Khunjao and he delivered demand letters to Government employees, contractors and traders in Tentha area.

  • August 20: A United National Liberation Front (UNLF) cadre, Gurumayum Botomba Sharma alias Manikanta (28), was arrested by the Imphal West District Police from Uripok Canteen Leirak. He disclosed that he had joined the outfit on January 11, 2006, through one Tongbram Tiken alias Inao of Sagolmang Salam Leikai and got basic military training at Mithi in Myanmar.

  • August 19: 11 militants, including two women cadres, belonging UNLF, were arrested by the City Police from three different places of Motghoria, Chachal and Hengrabari in Guwahati, Assam. The Police also recovered a satellite phone, 20 cell phones, two gypsies, ten laptops, three video cameras and a number of ATM and credit cards. Cash worth over INR 0.25 million was recovered from the possession of the militants.

    UNLF cadre, Leishangthem Nanao Singh alias Surchand alias Maikeilepa (30), was arrested by the Imphal West District Police from Tera bazaar area. He disclosed that he joined the outfit in October 2007 through one self styled ‘sergeant major’ Khomei. He got basic military training at Leitang in Chandel District. He was operating in the ‘organisation section’ of the UNLF in Imphal West under self styled ‘sergeant major’ Robindro. Some incriminating documents relating to UNLF and one two wheeler were recovered from his possession.

  • August 13: A combined force of the Bishnupur District Police and Assam Rifles foiled an attempt by the UNLF to trigger a bomb blast along Tiddim Road in between Nambol and Bishnupur ahead of the Independence Day celebration, by arresting a cadre of its armed wing Manipur People's Army (MPA), Oinam Anand alias Angouton (22), from Kamong Sabal Maning Leikai. Following his disclosure, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) weighing around five kilograms was recovered and defused by the Security Force. There was one magazine filled with bolts, bearings, nails and explosive materials in the IED. Angouton confessed that the IED was handed over to him by one 'sergeant' Angamba of the outfit to plant and trigger a blast at a spot in between Nambol and Bishnupur. He had undergone military training of the outfit inside Myanmar and he was a bomb expert. Angouton was also involved in the blowing up of an excavator of the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) on January 21.

  • August 8: Imphal East District Police arrested three suspects, including a woman over ground worker of the UNLF, when they were traveling in a vehicle at Sita Track junction. They were identified as Khuleibam O. Usha (32), Chabungbam Khellen Singh (25) and Mohammed Yaima alias Mojibur (22). All of them hailed from Porum Pangantabi in Pangei of Imphal East District. Khuleibam was operating as 'project officer' for recruitment for the group. She was taking two others as fresh recruits to Myanmar to join the group. A cellular phone, one driving license, two Voter ID and INR 3725 were recovered from their possession.

  • August 7: Two cadres of KCP and another cadre of UNLF who were arrested by Imphal West commandos from Goa on August 2 were brought to Imphal. The KCP cadres have been identified as Naorem Manimohon Meitei alias Amit alias Kaoba alias Kokai (36) and Sahid alias John alias Khamba Phaobitek Mayai Leikai. The UNLF cadre, Sapam Mohon alias Iboyaima alias Sanatomba (37) Tentha Khunou Bazar, said Senior (SP) Imphal West L. Kailun in a press release.

  • August 4: Two UNLF cadres were arrested by the Thoubal District Police from Salungpham village. They were identified as Laishram Govind Meitei alias Achamba (21) and Thokchom Ojit Meitei (26). They disclosed that they were operating in the finance section of the outfit.

  • July 30: A 'finance secretary' of the UNLF, identified as Sarangthem Prem alias Lukhoi (38), surrendered before the Assam Rifles and Tengnoupal Police. He deposited one 9-mm pistol with magazine along with seven live ammunitions. He joined the outfit in March 2005 and got training in Andro Khunou Hill. He was extorting money on behalf of the outfit from Khurai, Singjamei, Pangei and Wangkhei areas.

  • July 18: Two UNLF cadres, identified as 'Seargent' Takhellambam Raghumani Singh alias Mangangba alias Mani alias Raghu (35) and 'corporal' Uttam Singh alias Nancho (24), were arrested by the SFs in Imphal West District. One .38 mm pistol and six live rounds were recovered from the possession of Uttam.

  • July 16: A UNLF cadre, Ningthoujam Surjit Meitei alias Achaiba (27), was arrested by a combined force of the Thoubal District Police and Assam Rifles from Salungpham area. He disclosed that he joined the outfit in 2001 as '22nd batch' and got basic military training in the same year.

  • July 13: Nagaland Page reports that four militant groups of Manipur, ULFA and the NSCN- K have jointly decided to put up a joint front against the NSCN-IM in Manipur, following a senior level meeting held in Bangladesh recently. According to sources, UNLF, People's Liberation Army (PLA), ULFA, Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), PREPAK and NSCN-K discussed the prevailing situation in Manipur and Nagaland and expressed their satisfaction in putting up a joint front against NSCN-IM in Manipur. UNLF 'chairman', R.K. Meghan reiterated the aim to achieve independence of Manipur and integration of Kabaw valley of Myanmar. He expressed his desire of having good relationship with the NSCN-K, PLA and ULFA. Meghan also pressed upon having strong bondage with Paresh Baruah, 'commander-in-chief' of ULFA in restoring glory of Ahoms and Meitei confederacy.

  • Sources said Meghan believed that bulk of Myanmar's population on border areas support UNLF's struggle for independence and would join their confederacy for prosperity. He was of the view that if Myanmar's people did not support them, how they could survive their areas. He was of the opinion that after elections in Myanmar, Military Junta would lose control and people would raise their voices in uniting Kabaw with independent Manipur. UNLF and PLA camps in Manipur are the first step towards achieving their objective of establishing Kangleipak including Kabaw Valley, he said.

  • July 9: One UNLF cadre, identified as self styled ‘corporal’ Thongam Kamba alias Thongamcha (32) was arrested by Imphal West commandos from Lamphel Fishery gate, said a press release issued by Imphal West Senior Superintendent of Police L Kailun.

    Four UNLF cadres were arrested by the Imphal West District Police from different parts of the District. They were identified as Laishram Mathen Khuman (32), Mayanglambam Shanouton alias Shanou (40), Mietram Rambo alias Shanta alias Yaiskulsenba (22) and Laishram Bimol alias Joy (34). Two 9-mm pistols with magazines having two live rounds each were also recovered from the possession of Mietram.

  • July 2: The UNLF alleged the June 26 surrender of militants before the Manipur Police and Assam Rifles to be stage managed.

  • June 29: UNLF cadre, L. Budha Singh (28), was arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel at Wangu Tera in Thoubal District.

  • June 26: At least 19 cadres of three militant outfits formally surrendered before the Manipur Director General of Police, Y. Joy Kumar, and Major General C.A. Krishnan, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), in a function held at Assam Rifles headquarters complex at Mantripukhri in Imphal. They included 15 cadres of the United Liberation Army (ULA) outfit, consisting of its 'commander in chief', 'secretary' and 'financial secretary', three cadres of the KYKL and a cadre of the UNLF. They deposited a large quantity of warlike stores and communication equipment, including an AK Rifle with ammunition, two sten carbines, two 303 rifles, four pistols, a revolver, hand grenades and three wireless radio sets.

  • June 25: Two cadres of the UNLF were arrested by the Guwahati Police, in Guwahati, Assam.

  • June 23: Two woman cadres, Tongbram Ningol Salam Ongbi Sangeeta alias Tampha of the PREPAK and Angom Shanti alias Leingakpi alias Nanao of the UNLF, were also arrested on the disclosure of Kanta.

  • June 20: A combined team of Thoubal District Police commandos and troops of Assam Rifles (21st Battalion) arrested one UNLF cadre, Mayengbam Romen alias Khonthang (26) at Kakching Bazar.

  • June 6: Sentinel reports that 13 militant organizations from the Northeast States of Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya figure in the list of banned organizations as it appears in the website of the Union Home Ministry (MHA). The ULFA heads the list. The other outfits were: NDFB, People's Liberation Army (PLA), and UNLF, People's Revolutionary party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC).

  • June 2: A UNLF cadre, Surjit Ningthoujam Singh alias Nganlamba (21), was arrested by the troops from Bishnupur District area. Army sources said that he was recruited at a very young age by the outfit and was indoctrinated to serve its nefarious designs.

  • June 1: A UNLF cadre, Thengujam Basa alias Basan (30), was also arrested by the Imphal East District Police on.

  • May 8: A suspected over ground worker of the UNLF, identified as Salam Radha Mohan Singh, was arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Arong Khunou Awang Leikai in Thoubal District.

  • May 3: Expressing concern over the activities of the Manipur-based militant outfit UNLF and CPI-Maoist in the State, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the case of the two recently-arrested UNLF leaders would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Tarun Gogoi condemned the ULFA for being 'insincere' about the proposed talks by adamantly insisting on 'sovereignty' as the issue, saying that no dialogue was possible under the circumstances as sovereignty was 'non-negotiable'. Gogoi was also critical of the intellectuals who had been urging the Government to be flexible on the sovereignty issue. Gogoi said that the ULFA was not a revolutionary group as its leaders maintained a lavish lifestyle in foreign countries at the expense of their cadres. He further added that while some camps of the ULFA and other militant groups still existed in Bangladesh, the country was extending full cooperation to India in flushing out the militants.

  • The National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) was also maintaining close ties with different anti-India groups having bases in Bangladesh. According to an assessment by the SFs, at least a hundred trained cadres of the outfit are still in Assam, while, around 50 cadres must be in Bangladesh. Sources further said that the NDFB launched joint operations with the ULFA from time to time, but the outfit also maintained close ties with other groups like National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM), UNLF, All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) etc, as well as with some other anti-India groups in the neighbouring country. Sources revealed that under pressure in Bangladesh, anti-talk faction of the NDFB recently established a camp in Myanmar and is located near a camp of KYKL.

  • April 30: Two UNLF cadres were arrested by the Police at Patharquwariri at Guwahati in Assam. They were identified as 'vice-president' Kh. Tomba alias Vikram Singh and self styled 'lieutenant colonel' Abu alias Dilip Singh. Sources said that they were arrested when they were planning to proceed to Myanmar. One lap top, cash in terms of hundreds of thousands and documents were recovered from their possession.

  • April 20: Two UNLF cadres were arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Wabagai area in Thoubal District. They were identified as Mayengbam Chandramani alias Mani (29) and Waikhom Darmo Singh (32).

  • A UNLF cadre, Ningthoujam Meghachandra alias Yaibiren alias Vikash alias Valentino alias Fock Light (28), was arrested by the Imphal West District Police from Nupilal Complex gate.

    Based on Yaibiren's confession, another cadre and a sympathizer of the UNLF were arrested by the Imphal West District Police. They were identified as Laimayum Toleshwor alias Token (45) and Sagolsem Babulu Singh (45). They disclosed that they were operating under the instruction one Ingba. One receipt book of UNLF was seized from the possession of Babulu.

  • April 16: A UNLF cadre, Haobam Dhanachandra alias Tomba (29), was shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Thampalok under Tengnoupal Police Station in Chandel District. He joined the UNLF since 2003. One AK series Rifles loaded with one magazine containing 10 live rounds, one Chinese hand grenade and two IEDs were recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

  • A UNLF cadre, identified as Kh. Amuthoi Meitei alias Lamthoi (28) of Umathel Awang Leikai in Thoubal District, was arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel.

    One cadre of the Manipur-based PULF, identified as Kalam Uddin of Makhan Nagar area under Jirighat Police Station in Cachar District of Assam, was arrested by the Security Forces. One demand note or extortion notice of INR 0.2 million, which was to be served on some individual or business house of the area, was recovered from his possession. PULF after lying low in Barak Valley for long respite has been trying to regroup and spread its presence, following the hiatus created by the surrender of Black Widow (BW) and the subdued presence of People's Liberation Army (PLA), UNLF, People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) and Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP).

  • April 10: Myanmar's Ambassador to India U. Kyi Thein at Shillong in Meghalaya said that action against Indian insurgents in its territory will be initiated only after receiving military assistance from India. "We have informed India of our requirements to help us in fighting against the insurgents," the Ambassador said. "India has agreed to provide us our military requirements, but I cannot share with you our requirements," Thein said. He said, "We also shared the same problem (insurgency) like India. This problem will be sorted once India meet our requirements." The report adds that there are at least 15 insurgents' camps operating from Myanmar soil, fighting either for an autonomous or independent homeland in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. The Centre asked the Myanmar to take action against the militant groups, including Manipur-based UNLF, People's Liberation Army (PLA), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) Assam-based ULFA and Nagaland-based National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) operating from Sagaing division and the Chin State of Myanmar. Thein said that the problem of insurgency across the India-Myanmar border can be sorted out through infrastructure development. "We (India- Myanmar) now plan to develop infrastructure in the border with special emphasis on enhancing connectivity," the Ambassador informed.

  • March 27: A UNLF cadre, identified as Soibam Somen alias Ningaidaba (23) of Heinoubok, was arrested by the Imphal East District Police from his locality.

  • March 26: Two UNLF cadres surrendered before the Manipur Director General Police Y. Joykumar and IGAR (South) Major General C. A. Krishnan at a surrender ceremony held at Mantripukhri area in Imphal East District. They reportedly laid down arms to the Assam Rifles on March 15. They were identified as Sunil Singh alias Kiyamlakpa and Herojeet Singh alias Silongba. Kiyamlakpa joined '293rd battalion' of the UNLF on October 27, 2007 and got training at Tuambual camp for 60 days. Silongba joined the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in 2005 before he defected to the UNLF on April 14, 2009. He was trained at Mintha camp for 45 days.

  • March 21: The Manipur-based militant outfits, PLA and UNLF, are on recruitment drive in order to consolidate their bases in Barak Valley in Assam. According to intelligence sources, two hardcore women cadres of the PLA, identified by name in their teens, are on recruitment mission and extortion drive. Resources are also being pulled up through ransoms. The PLA in particular is active in certain areas of Nagaon where a middle aged woman cadre is looking after the interests of the organization. UNLF, which has virtually no strength in the valley except in the fringe areas bordering Manipur in Lakhipur sub-division, is making desperate bid to regroup in order to make its presence felt with the sole objective of extortions to replenish its depleted coffers. A woman cadre of the outfit is looking after recruitment and resource generation. Both the outfits are however operating independently, said the sources.

  • February 26: India and Myanmar are gearing up for a "well-coordinated operation" to flush out militants of the Northeast from the forests in the neighbouring country. The operation was finalised after Union Home Secretary G.K. Pillai visited Yangon, capital of Myanmar, on February 18. An official source said Pillai had disclosed this during a security meeting attended by top officials of the Manipur Police and Central Forces in Imphal on February 26. Pillai said that militant camps of various groups from the Northeast, including the UNLF, PLA, NSCN-K and NSCN-IM were based in Myanmar. The locations of these camps and maps of the area, Pillai said, had been provided during his meeting with Myanmar’s Deputy Home Minister Brigadier General Phone Swe. "They assured us that any camp working against Indian interests would be targeted," Pillai said. He, however, expressed doubts regarding the capabilities of the Myanmarese military and the effectiveness of such an operation. "They will take action, but the Myanmarese military has certain limitations concerning their capabilities," he said.

  • February 25: A UNLF cadre, identified as Keishmam Ningthowal (20), was arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation at Takhel area in Imphal West District.

  • February 15: A UNLF militant, identified as Salam Yenning alias Amujao, was shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Lamphal village in Chandel District. While eight other militants managed to escape, one M-16 Rifle with magazine, 6 live rounds of M-16, 2 Chinese hand grenades and INR 400 were recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

  • February 14: An Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) trooper, identified as Pebam Bikramjit (28) of Haobam Marak Keisham Leikai, was shot dead by unidentified militants at Haobam Marak under Singjamei Police Station of Imphal West District. However, the victim was a former militant of UNLF who surrendered in the year 1999 along with an AK-56 rifle to the Police.

  • February 11: Three suspected valley based militants were shot dead by the Assam Rifles during an encounter at Nambasi village under Kasom Khullen sub-division in Ukhrul District. An AK-47 Rifles with 10 live rounds two 9-mm pistols and one hand grenades were recovered from the encounter site. Two slain militants were claimed to be UNLF cadres by their family members. They were identified as Moirnagthem Dinesh alias Naotomba alias Nungthang (22) and Moiranthem Nanao (19).

  • February 7: One UNLF militant, identified as Oinam Nilson alias Leibakngakpa (20) of Pishum Oinam Leikai, was arrested by Imphal West commandos from Pishum Oinam Leikai area of Imphal West. One cellular phone was recovered from the possession of the arrested militant.

  • January 17: Two suspected UNLF cadres are shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel in a counter-insurgency (CI) operation at Khongkhan under Kamjong sub-division in Ukhrul District. One G-3 Rifle with magazine and 8 rounds, one 303 Rifle with magazine and 15 rounds and Japanese made radio set are recovered from the incident site.

  • January 15: Two suspected UNLF cadres are arrested by the Thoubal District Police from Kwakhhong Hiranmei village. They are identified as Leishangthem Rajesh Singh alias Koiruoba alias Koirounganba alias Kokonganba alias Lucky (25) and Salam Hemanta Singh (30). One vehicle, one laptop computer, two cellular phones along with two SIM cards and one driving license in the name of L. Rajesh are recovered from their possession. Rajesh Singh discloses that he joined the outfit in 1998 through one Romeo and got training at Myanmar in 2002 and he is currently operating as 'commander unit-I' in Thoubal District. Salam Hemanta confessed that he is operating under the 'command' of Rajesh Singh.

  • January 9: Two PREPAK cadres, involved in the January 6 bomb attack at the residence of Manipur Opposition leader Radhabinod Koijam at Thangmeiband, are arrested by a combined force of the Imphal West District Police and Assam Rifles. They are identified as Moirangthem Monao alias Parimacha alias Mohen alias Sana (26) and Laikhuram Munal Singh alias Santahoi (24). One loaded 9-mm pistol, one magazine of AK-47 rifles with three live rounds and one two wheeler vehicle and one cellular phone are recovered from their possession. They reveal during their interrogation that they were operating under one R.K. Jemson alias Rozar alias Ramananda alias Nongpoknagnba (32) of Sagolband Bijoy Govinda. They confess their involvement in the killing of one non local sugar juice vendor at Kwakeithel Bazar on March 1, 2009, killing of one non local barber at Sagolband Khumbong Mayum, lobbying of hand grenade at computer shop at Lamphel Sanakiethel, setting ablaze of Ujala Restaurant at Kwakethel, setting ablaze of Joychandra Garden at Langol and extortions of money from various shops and restaurants and saw mills and other business establishments in the Imphal areas. They also disclose that the recent serial killings of non locals in the State were the handiwork of the PREPAK, PLA, UNLF and KYKL as per a ‘decision’ taken at the top level to destabilise the present Manipur Government.

  • January 2: A UNLF cadre, Mangham Puyam (45), is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Khullen in Chandel District. One grenade is recovered from his possession.

  • January 1: A UNLF cadre, Khumukcham Amujao alias Lamkkhaiba (23), is arrested by the Thoubal District Police from Kakching Khunou area.

  • December 31: Unidentified militants open fire at the residence of retired Senior Field Assistant in the paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal, Laishram Madhumangol, at Moirangkhom in Imphal West District. Madhumangol said that the UNLF once ‘summoned’ him in connection with a land dispute. Earlier, a bomb is also triggered at his residence.

  • December 25: The UNLF rejects the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram’s appeal for to give up violence and hold talks.

  • December 23: A UNLF cadre, Sinam Anand Singh alias Babu (22), is arrested by the Imphal West District Police from Thangmeiband Dewan Leikai. He discloses that he was operating under the ‘command’ of one Pathou of the Manipur People’s Army, armed wing of the UNLF.

  • December 22: The Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, turning down the demand for sovereignty, asks the ULFA and UNLF to give up violence and hold talks. He said that the Union Government was willing to look at 'new governing structures' to take care of the development agenda of the Northeast. "A couple of groups like the ULFA and the UNLF are still carrying out violent activities. To them we say, give up the demand for sovereignty. Give up violence and we can talk of anything," the Union Minister said at the valedictory session of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) leadership summit in Kolkata. Stating that the Constitution was resilient and innovative, and accommodated the concerns of the people of smaller states, he said, "If new innovations for governing structures are required, we are willing to look at it. The Constitution has provided for hill development councils, semi-autonomy, and some schedules to address the concerns of the people of the smaller states. We can have more schedules as long as it takes care of the development agenda."

  • December 21: A UNLF cadre, Moirangthem Bobo Singh (48), is arrested by the Imphal East Police from Top Khongnang-khong. Bobo discloses that he joined the UNLF through one M. Devan and he was involved in the killing of Laishram Ibocha Singh and his daughter Laishram Ibemchaobi on April 10 at Uyumpok Mamang Leikai as well as Chanam-thabam Jayanta of Pukhao Laipham on April 14.

  • December 18: Two UNLF cadres, Naorem Kiran alias Shekhar (29) and Ningthoujam Helendro Singh (29), are arrested by the Imphal West District Police from near the northern gate of the Johnstone Hr. Secondary School. One cellular phone and one identity card of the 2nd India Reserve Battalion were recovered from their possession. Following their confession, five other cadres of the UNLF are arrested. They are identified as one Khaidem Romen Singh (29), Ashem Nilakanta alias Ingo alias Yaiphaba (29), Elangbam Ratankumar (28), Heisnam Romeo Singh (22) and Heisnam Deban Singh (32). Three AK 56 Rifles, one double barrel gun, one inverter, 170 Numbers of AK-56 projectiles, 10 live rounds of double barrel ammunition, one utensil (Tekali) and solar lamp plate were recovered from the residence of one Heisnam Deban Singh (32) at Khodrak Mayai Leikai.

  • December 13: Imphal West District Police arrest three UNLF cadres, involved in the grenade attack on a convoy of 34 Assam Rifles at Singjamei Bazar on November 19, along with a cable operator of a television network from the morgue of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. They are identified as Aheibam Nabin Singh (38), Keisam Premjit alias Yotchabi Singh (32) and R.K. Surjit Singh (35).

  • December 2: A UNLF cadre, Oinam Nandi Singh alias Khagemba (38), is arrested by a combined team of Imphal East District Police, Assam Rifles and the Army from his residence at Kwakeithel Landong.

  • November 30: A UNLF cadre, Nameirakpam Usa alias Jandou (32), is arrested by the Imphal East District Police from Kongba Laishram Leikai on November 28. He confesses that he was trained in Arunachal Pradesh and was further involved in extortion of money from the general public, Government officials and traders.

  • November 28: A UNLF cadre, Kanjujun Nano (27), is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Bashjikhong in Imphal West District.

  • November 24: The UNLF celebrating its 45th ‘raising day’ in Imphal states, "The UNLF believes that there is a common interest in the fight against the Indian state by the CPI(Maoist) and the liberation struggles of Manipur and the (Northeastern) region. The UNLF shall actively pursue a policy of mutual help and support with the Indian revolution through the CPI (Maoist)."

    Troops launch a counter-insurgency operation at Old Somtal in Chandel District targeting UNLF militants who killed five Assam Rifles personnel, including two officers, in an ambush on November 23. "We have launched a major search-and-destroy operation in the area. So far, the search parties have not made any contact with the militants, nor has there been any encounter as they are fleeing from our troops," a senior unnamed Assam Rifles officer said.

  • November 23: Five Assam Rifles personnel, including two officers, are killed in an ambush carried out by the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), armed wing of the UNLF, at Old Somtal area in Chandel District. The slain Assam Rifles officers were identified as Major Bhupendra Mehra and Captain R. Kumar. The militants manage to decamp with two AK-47 Rifles along with magazines, two INSAS Rifles with magazines and a stand Carbine from the ambush site.

    One Constable of the Imphal East District Police is shot at and wounded by suspected militants during an ambush at Yaralpat near Mega Manipur School under Porompat Police Station. Two empty cases of lethod shells and one unexploded lethod shell are recovered from the incident site.

  • November 12: The Imphal West District Police arrested two persons from Uripok Cheirap Court, identified as Angom Dilip Singh (36) and his wife Angom Ongbi Sushma Devi, for alleged involvement in organising manpower for the KYKL and UNLF and also transporting recruited youths from Imphal to Guwahati in Assam under the 'command' of one Milan of Kakwa in Imphal.

  • November 10: Five militants, including one UNLF cadre, were arrested by the SFs in separate search operations in Thoubal District.

  • November 3: A UNLF militant, identified as Khumbongmayum Gojendro, is arrested by the Imphal West District Police after an encounter at Babupara area.

  • October 31: The UNLF in a press release claims its armed wing Manipur People's Army (MPA) have killed seven Army personnel, including a captain, and injured many more in an ambush in the Aibol Khul area of Chandel District. The UNLF release also says that the cadres of the MPA's 293rd battalion captured five weapons, four INSAS Rifles and one AK Rifle, as well as one binocular. The Army spokesperson admits there had been an ambush on Assam Rifles personnel. The party lost three troopers, including one Junior Commanding Officer and two soldiers, he adds. He also mentins that the soldiers also managed to inflict casualties on the attackers.

  • A UNLF militant, Heikujan Inaoba Singh (24), is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation under Kakching Police Station in Thoubal District.

  • October 28: Indian Army soldiers arrest four militants from Chiri Bridge on the National Highway-53 under Lakhipur subdivision in Cachar District. One of the arrested militants is identified as K. H. Gyaneshwar Singh (32), of Bishenpur District in the State of Manipur. Army sources said he was a 'second lieutenant' of the PLA. The other three militants are reported to be UNLF cadres hailing from Lakhipur. They are identified as Nilot Chandra Sinha (40) of Nayagram, Thomba Sinha (32) of Kunjenleikai and K Premjit Sinha alias Ranjit of Orabil under Lakhipur Police Station.

  • October 27: A UNLF militant, Nama Yumana Romio Singh alias Thunghm (26), is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation at Napath area under Kakching Police Station in Thoubal District.

  • October 25: The UNLF claims responsibility for executing an assailant, Pukhrambam Mangoljao, who allegedly killed a child, Soram Prabhakar alias Thoi, at Kumbi in Bishnupur District on October 18.

  • October 23: A UNLF militant, Yumnam Sunil Singh alias Babu Sane Singh (23), is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation under Lilong Police Station in Thoubal District.

  • October 19: A press release signed by the ‘assistant secretary information and publicity’ of the Military Council faction of the United Kuki Liberation Army, H. Joshua Kuki, stated that the outfit has decided to merge with the ZRA for the larger interest of the Zou families for "achieving greater things and serving bigger purpose."

  • October 15: Normal life and functioning of the Government departments and hospitals are disrupted in Manipur, after the Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), an umbrella body of the outlawed PREPAK, UNLF and PLA, called for a general shutdown and observed a ‘national black day’ against the State’s merger with the Indian Union in 1949.

  • July 24: A UNLF militant, Elangbam Boinao Singh, and a PREPAK militant, Thokchom Dinesh Singh, are arrested by a combine force of the Thoubal District Police and Assam Rifles from Hiyanglam area. A locally made pistol is recovered from Boinao's possession.

  • July 15: Police arrest a UNLF militant, identified as Elangbam Ibochouba Singh alias Khomei (23) of Kadangband Mayai Leikai, during a search operation at Kakching Lamkhai in Thoubal District.

  • July 13: An unidentified militant, shot dead in an encounter with a combined team of Thoubal District commandos and troops of the Assam Rifles at Wangbal in Thoubal District, is identified as one R K Bidyananda (32) of Chingmeirong Maning Leikai. According to Police, Bidyananda is a cadre of the UNLF outfit.

  • July 8: A combined team of Assam Rifles and Thoubal District Police arrested two UNLF militants, identified as Thongam Bisho Singh alias Bokul (28) and Phuritsabam Saratchandra Singh alias Dada (29), during a search operation at Salungpham in the Thoubal District.

  • July 7: SFs, during a search operation, recovered a US carbine, eight olive-green uniforms and two Chinese grenades at Bangairibge jungle under Jiribum Police Station in Imphal East District. Sources said that the weapons belonged to suspected UNLF militants.

  • July 5: A combined team of Thoubal District Police and personnel of the Assam Rifles shot dead a UNLF militant in an isolated area between Thoubal Wangmataba and Kabrang village under Thoubal Police Station of Thoubal District around 4.45 am (IST) in the morning. However, two other militants managed to escape through the hilly terrain and thick forest. One foreign made pistol, one magazine containing three live rounds of 7.62mm, one Chinese hand grenade and one receipt book written as UNLF Nungaiba Phongdokchaba having 30 pages were recovered from the possession of the slain militant. The slain cadre was later identified as Khoirom Ratankumar (30) of Moidangpok Awang Leikai village.

  • June 29: SFs arrested one UNLF militant, identified as Pvt Lukram Jyotin Singh alias Nonjaba (21), from Tengnoupal in Chandel District.

  • June 26: The Thoubal District Police arrest one KCP militant suspected to be involved in the killing of a contractor, Y. Krishnadas, and one UNLF militant, who carries a reward of INR 100000 and is suspected to be a prime accused in the killing of non-locals at Leimaram.

  • June 19: A UNLF militant, Maipaksana, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel while traveling in a vehicle on the Chandel-Pallel road.

  • June 16: A female local volunteer of the UNLF, identified as Elangbam Bandana Devi alias Naobi, is arrested by a combined team of the Thoubal District Police and Assam Rifles during a search operation at general area of Hinyanglam Hiranamei village. She confesses that she was involved in observing the movement of Security Forces in the June 5 killing incident of a non-local worker at Wabagai Lamkhai.

  • June 9: Assam Rifles personnel arrested a person, identified as Zawin, from his residence at Moreh in Chandel District. He is involved in smuggling of arms and ammunition for the UNLF from Myanmar to Moreh.

  • June 7: A UNLF militant, Okram Shyam Singh alias Thoirakpam, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Pallel to Kakching road in Thoubal District.

  • June 5: A UNLF militant, identified as Mayanglambam Inaoyaima Singh alias Nongdamba, is arrested by the Thoubal District Police during a search operation at Khangabok Bazaar. Mayanglambam confesses during his interrogation that he was operating in the 'finance section' of the outfit.

  • A non-local barber is shot dead by the UNLF militants at Wabagai Lamkhai in Thoubal District. A UNLF sympathiser, involved in the killing, is subsequently arrested by a combined force of the Thoubal District Police and Assam Rifles. However, two other UNLF militants, involved in the killing, manage to escape from the incident site. Superintendent of Police of Thoubal District, Clay Khongsai, announces a cash reward of INR 50,000 to any individual or Security Force personnel who can give information about the two absconding UNLF cadres.

  • June 4: A UNLF militant, identified as Leishangthem Shyam Meitei, is arrested by the Imphal East District Police from Ayangpali.

  • June 3: A suspected UNLF militant is shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Nampisha village in Ukhrul District. One 7.62-mm pistol with magazine and two live rounds of ammunition are recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Other militants manage to escape from the encounter site.

  • May 21: A UNLF cadre, identified as one Mohendro, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Korshantombi area under Kakching Police Station in Thoubal District. Three live ammunitions of AK-47 are recovered from his possession.

  • May 10: Assam Rifles stated that militant outfits like the UNLF and PLA continue with their sole agenda of extortion, intimidation, drug trafficking and smuggling which is proved by the fact that their leadership and their families are getting wealthier by the day. These outfits have a number of over-ground workers who are actually white collared terrorists sustaining terrorism by provisioning money and power to the banned organisations by fleecing the poor public and terrorising them, the press release said.

  • The Imphal West District Police foil an abduction bid of the director of the remote sensing department when they arrest three UNLF cadres from Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak. One 9-mm pistol along with three rounds of live ammunition and a motorcycle are recovered from their possession.

  • May 9: An unspecified number of UNLF militants are killed and several others wounded by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter near International Border Pillar No 110 in Ukhrul District.

  • May 7: A suspected militant, Oinam Kabichandra alias Muthi, is shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at New Shijang village under Moreh Police Station in Chandel District along the India-Myanmar border. One point 25 Spanish pistol with magazine, four live rounds, two fire cases and one hand grenade are recovered from the possession of the slain militant. The report adds that Kabichandra had been imprisoned several times for being a cadre of the UNLF.

  • May 2: A UNLF cadre, identified as Hidangmayum Sanatomba Sharma, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation at Porompat in Imphal East District.

  • April 26: A UNLF militant, Elangbam Ibochauba, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from K. Molnom area under Kakching Police Station.

  • April 22: Two UNLF militants are shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter in the area along India-Myanmar Border Pillar 84 in Chandel District. A 9-mm pistol, four live rounds, one .32 revolver, three live rounds and eight Chinese hand grenades are recovered from the possession of the slain militants.

  • April 20: The KYKL and UNLF jointly ask the administration of the Manipur University to defer the forthcoming election of its Students Union, scheduled to be held on April 24, citing alleged irregularities in the registration process.

  • April 14: One Assam Rifles personnel, Nokzar Ao, is killed and six others wounded in an ambush carried out by cadres of the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), armed wing of the UNLF, along the road connecting Leishang and Kongkan villages on the India-Myanmar border under Kamjong Sub-Division in Ukhrul District. The outfit, however, claims that over 14 Assam Rifles personnel were killed and over 10 wounded in the ambush.

  • April 12: A UNLF cadre, Sorokhaibam Bisarat Singsang, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Kakwa Sorokhaibam Leikai area under Kakwa Police Station in Imphal East District.

  • April 4: Two suspected UNLF militants are shot dead by the SFs in a pre-dawn encounter at Nognada area in Imphal East District. The Police later recover dead bodies of the slain militants from the incident site along with an AK rifle, a 9-mm pistol and a hand grenade.

  • April 1: A UNLF militant, Thongam Khelen Singh alias Loingamba, is arrested by a combined team of the Imphal West District Police and Army from Iroishemba wooden bridge near a camp of the Central Reserve Police Force.

    The Thoubal District Police arrested one UNLF cadre, Ningthoujam Nanda Singh alias Malemnganba, from Arongthong area.

  • March 20: A suspected UNLF militant, Boboy Singh alias Khundaba, is shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Laibi under Tengnoupal Police Station in the Chandel District. One 9-mm pistol, two magazines, 10 fired cases, six live rounds and a diary are recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

  • March 19: A UNLF cadre, identified as Kongbrailatpam Milan Sharma, is arrested by a team of the Thoubal commandos during a search operation at Wangjing bazar.

  • March 12: At least four militants are killed during a clash between the combined cadres of the NSCN-K, UNLF and ULFA on one side and the NSCN-IM on the other in the Tirap District of Arunachal Pradesh. Two slain militants are from the NSCN-IM and the other two were the combined group of the three militant outfits.

  • March 10: A UNLF militant, Leishangthem Nanao Singh alias Surchandra Singh, is arrested by the Imphal West District Police. Leishangthem revealed during interrogation that he received basic military training in Myanmar.

  • Two suspected UNLF militants are shot dead by a combined force of the Imphal West District Police and Army during an encounter at Mayang Imphal Yangbi. One sten carbine with magazine, three live rounds, one 9-mm pistol, six live rounds with magazine and a hand grenade are recovered from their possession.

  • March 8: One UNLF cadre is shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Ril Ram Centre and Bongli areas under Tengnoupal Police Station in the Chandel District. One US made lethode, two live rounds of lethode and three destroyed grenades are recovered from his possession.

  • March 5: The ‘commander of the joint task force, human resource’ of the UNLF and KYKL, Lamjingba, produces a school teacher, Chungkham Rameshwar Singh, before the media in Imphal West District and declares that he would be shot at for allegedly misguiding the students in using unfair means in the ongoing Class X exam.

  • March 2: A UNLF militant, Huirem Surjit alias Nongmadon Singh, is arrested by a combined force of the Imphal West District Police and Assam Rifles from Kangchup Chingkhong area. He confesses during interrogation that he received basic arms training at Sajik Tampak in the ‘25th batch’ of the UNLF.

  • February 22: A UNLF cadre, Moirangthem Noren Singh, is arrested by the Thoubal District Police from the Thoubal Wangmataba Mathak Leikai area.

  • February 16: Troops arrest three militants of the UNLF and PREPAK from three different places in the Bishnupur District.

  • February 14: SFs arrested one UNLF cadre, Aman Dorain Singh alias Tampak Ngakpa, from the general area of Wangu in the Thoubal District. Aman confessed during interrogation that he was involved in ambushes laid against the troops at Keithelmanbi and Sajang in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

  • February 13: One UNLF cadre is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel at Sita-Tengnoupal road junction in the Chandel District. He is identified as Lala Singh of Imphal West District.

    One UNLF cadre, Shyam Kishor alias Tomba, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Yairipok Awang Leikai in the Thoubal District.

  • February 6: The UNLF ‘bans’ the general manager of the Imphal Urban Cooperative Bank, Y. Ningthemjao Singh, from entering the premises of the bank for his alleged involvement in malpractices.

  • February 4: Five militant groups, the UNLF, PLA, KYKL, PREPAK and KCP, jointly ‘award’ death sentence to two men, Ipham Amir Khan and Achom Romen Singh, for their alleged involvement in the January 22 rape and killing of a handicapped woman vendor, Achom Romen, at Moreh in the Chandel District.

  • January 24: Two BSF personnel are killed and another injured in a militant attack at Ithai under Kumbi Police Station in the Bishupur District. Later, the UNLF outfit claims responsibility for the attack..

  • January 23: While contradicting a claim of the UNLF of having destroyed bunkers and inflicted casualties on the SFs at Khenjang in the Chandel District on January 18, the Assam Rifles say five militants were killed in the retaliatory firing and several others managed to escape from the incident site.

  • January 19: The UNLF claims, through a press release, to have destroyed a four-man sentry post of the Assam Rifles, by killing all the four Security Force personnel at Khenjang village in the Chandel District on January 18.

  • January 12: A UNLF cadre, Ningombam Rocky Singh alias Giri, is arrested by the Imphal West District Police from Liwa road.

  • January 4: An achievement report released by the Superintendent Police of Imphal West District, L. Kailun, states that 91 militants were shot dead and 343 others, including 13 UNLF cadres, arrested by the District Police during counter-insurgency operations in 2008. The report says of the 343 arrested, 83 were detained under the National Security Act (NSA). 88 assorted weapons and 989 ammunitions were recovered from the arrested and slain militants, the report adds. In addition, the report further says INR 1, 95,280 were also recovered from these militants.

  • December 29: 15 boys of Class XII of the Kanan Devi Memorial School who attempted to assault a teacher of the school and assaulted the driver of a school bus, when the latter tried to intervene, are summoned by the ‘Joint Task Force for Human Resource’ of the KYKL and UNLF and are whipped as ‘punishment’ before the media at an unspecified place in the Thoubal District.

  • December 23: Troops of 32 Assam Rifles arrest a UNLF cadre, Waikhem Sotar Meitei, and a cadre of the United Socialist Revolutionary Army, identified as Kamthelal, from Waiphei village under Yairipok Police Station in the Thoubal District.

  • December 21: The Thoubal District Police arrest a UNLF cadre, Tekcham Romenkanta Singh alias Ibochouba alias Malem alias Puya, during a search operation at Wangjing Tekcham Leikai. A booklet titled "Nungaiba Phongdokchaba" is recovered from his possession. Puya confessed during interrogation that he was earlier a trained PLA cadre and later joined the UNLF.

  • December 20: SFs arrest two UNLF cadres, Laishakam Pathoi Singh and Akoijam Ibomcha Singh, from a vehicle at Bongyang under Tengnoupal Police Station in the Chandel District. One RPG launcher, one RPG rocket, 10 chargers for RPG rockets, 11 Chinese grenades, 38 lethod bombs, 2035 assorted ammunition, 1960 numbers of 5.56 ammunition, two AK magazines and 14 magazines of M-16 were recovered from their possession.

  • December 17: SFs arrest two PLA and one UNLF militants from Patsoi Kiyam area in the Imphal West District. While two PLA cadres are identified as Thangjam Samananda alias Dinesh and Sorokhaibam Inaoton alias Nojen alias Sanjit, the UNLF cadre is identified as Khongbantabam Lanboi alias Echen. The PLA cadres confess that they had joined the outfit in 2003 and 2004 respectively. The UNLF cadre, on the other hand, said that he had joined the outfit in January 2002.

  • December 12: Two UNLF cadres, Tokchom Rajen Singh and Hemam Raju Kumar Singh, are arrested by a joint force of the Manipur Police, Bangalore Police and Military Intelligence from Bangalore, capital of Karnataka.

  • December 7: A UNLF cadre, identified as ‘private’ Thingom Angouba Singh, is arrested by the AR personnel at Kakching Khunou under Waikhong Police Station in the Thoubal District.

  • December 2: The UNLF claims that three barracks of the 12 Assam Rifles located at Nambisha village of Ukhrul District were destroyed in an attack by its armed wing, the MPA, on November 27.

  • November 14: Two suspected UNLF cadres are shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Old H. Mongjang village under Moreh police station in the Chandel district. An AK 47 rifle with one magazine containing 10 live rounds, one Chinese made hand grenade and a radio set were recovered from the possession of the slain militants.

  • November 12: The UNLF militants lobbed two lethod bombs at the 32 Assam Rifles post at Lilong in the Thoubal district. They later manage to escape in a vehicle in which they came. However, no one is wounded in the bomb attack.

  • November 11: A UNLF cadre, Anthim Tholbi Singh, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel when he was traveling in a vehicle at Bongyang under Kakching police station in the Thoubal district.

  • November 8: A UNLF cadre, identified as Kenjit alias Panaoba, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation at Chamol area under Tengnoupal police station.

  • November 4: A UNLF cadre, identified as W. Shantikumar alias Maimu of Torbung Mayai Leikai village, is arrested by the troopers of 57 Mountain Division of Assam Rifles from Torbung area.

  • October 30: Two UNLF cadres are shot dead by the Assam Rifles during an encounter at Behiang under Singngat police station in the Churachandpur district.

    The UNLF claims that cadres of ‘292 battalion’ of the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), its armed wing, destroyed a major camp of the Army located at Veng Khul under Singhat sub-division of Churachandpur district.

  • October 18: A 15 year old UNLF cadre, identified as No. 20515 M. Salaodin alias Azad alias Boboy, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel during a search operation at Kakching Lamkhai. Five live rounds of AK-47/56 are recovered from his possession.

  • October 12: A UNLF cadre, Tourangbam Naopa alias Nongmailakpa alias David, is arrested by a combined team of Imphal East district police commandos and 32 Assam Rifles from Khongman Mangjil crossing.

  • October 7: A UNLF cadre, Pemba alias Sathiba, is arrested during a search operation at Singtam area under Kakching police station.

  • September 22: One UNLF cadre, Telem Ranjoy alias Marum, is arrested by the Imphal East district police commandos from Khurai Sajor Leikai.

  • September 21: One suspected UNLF militant is shot dead by the Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Ashang village under Kasom Khullen police station in the Ukhrul district. While a G-3 rifle with two magazines loaded with eight live rounds and two empty cases are recovered, other militants manage to escape from the encounter site.

  • September 16: Around 50 persons, including government officials and labourers staying in various parts of the valley, fled to their village in Heirok. The exodus from the valley follows the September 15 attack on a salesman, Laishram Sashikumar, hailing from Heirok part-II, by two UNLF cadres at Lalambung Makhong in Imphal. The attack is carried out on Laishram for allegedly disregarding a militant diktat asking him to return home in Heirok.

  • September 15: A salesman, Laishram Sashikumar, hailing from Heirok part-II, is shot at and wounded by two UNLF cadres at Lalambung Makhong.

  • September 11: The combined security forces of Imphal West district police commandos and 12 Maratha Light Infantry also arrest one KYKL militant, identified as Ninghtoujam Herojit Singh.

  • September 10: Troops of 29 Assam Rifles manning Tengnoupal check post arrest six persons while travelling towards Imphal in a vehicle along with two other female passengers. They are identified as Premkumar Singh, Jemsen Singh, Amarjeet Singh, Somarjeet Singh, Bipin Singh and Sushil Kumar. Their interrogation led to the revelation that two of them are UNLF cadres.

  • September 7: Troops of the Assam Rifles arrest two UNLF cadres from Tangjeng Khunou near Sugnu. One 9-mm pistol and four live rounds are recovered from their possession.

  • September 3: Two UNLF cadres, Maung Myint and Tunwai, are arrested by Assam Rifles personnel at Bongyang under Tengnoupal police station.

  • September 2: Two suspected UNLF cadres are shot dead by troops of the 1st Assam Rifles during an encounter at Nambashi village in the Ukhrul district along India-Myanmar border. A Chinese 9-pmm pistol loaded with four live rounds and a hand grenade are recovered from the slain militants.

  • August 30: One UNLF cadre, identified as 's/s l/cpl' Loyang Ngamba alias kanglei alias Kumarjit alias Ibuma, is arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel at Bongyang check post under Tengnoupal police station in the Chandel district.

  • August 24: Assam Rifles personnel arrested one over ground worker of the UNLF, identified as Gelson, during a search operation in the Sajik Tampak area.

  • August 23: One UNLF militant, ‘cpl’ Toijam Thengnaba alias Rocky, is shot dead by the troops in the Imphal West district.

  • The UNLF in a press release said it has imposed a ‘ban’ on petty non-local traders and artisans settling or penetrating local villages in the Imphal West district.

  • August 22: One UNLF cadre, Laimayum Suraj alias Akas, is arrested by Imphal East district police commandos near the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.

  • August 21: Two suspected UNLF militants opened fire and punctured the rear tyres of a passenger bus plying from Heirok part-III, where the villagers were asked by the UNLF and KYKL not to move out of their villages for ‘defying’ them in receiving arms under the Special Police Officer scheme of the Manipur Government. Thoubal district police commandos later arrested the two militants involved in carrying out the attack on the bus along with the motorcycle they used.

  • August 20: The Thoubal district police arrested one UNLF cadre during a search operation at Tekcham.

  • August 16: Army personnel and Cachar district police arrest two Manipur based militants in two separate search operations at Silchar town and Banskandi village in Assam. They are identified as Sanjoy Singh, an UNLF cadre and Kamaruddin, a PULF cadre.

  • August 10: One surrendered UNLF cadre, Naorem Tejmani, is shot dead by unidentified militants at Lamloi Khongnangkhong under Lamphel police station in the Imphal West district.

  • August 7: One UNLF cadre, Moirangthem Pintu Singh alias Thomba, is arrested by a combined team of Imphal East district police commandos and Assam Rifles personnel from Khurai Sajor Leikai.

    July 26: Two UNLF militants are arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from the outskirts of Silchar town in Assam.

  • July 19: Three children are killed and two others sustain injuries when a bomb explodes at a playground in the Phaisanjang village under Moreh police station in Chandel district. Condemning the incident, the Kuki Students Organisation contends that it is an unprovoked rocket launcher attack by the UNLF.

  • July 15: The HPC-D alleges that the UNLF and KCP-Military Council frequently rape tribal girls and are trying to separate the smaller communities in the State.

  • July 6: The UNLF and KYKL said that they would target all the villagers of Heirok unless the public relent and retreat from the decision to accept arms under the Special Police Officers scheme.

  • July 1: More than 300 students of Heirok village, studying at various schools and colleges with boarding facilities in the state, returned due to the recent threats from the UNLF and KYKL to the people in Heirok in connection with the setting up of Special Police Officers.

  • June 24 : Militants belonging to the UNLF and KYKL captured two persons, N. Angou and Rabi, for their alleged involvement in lifting kerosene oil meant for distribution among the people of Ukhrul in connivance with some people close to Legislator Danny Shaiza. They are paraded at an unspecified place in the valley area.

  • June 22: One UNLF cadre is wounded by the Assam Rifles personnel during a counter-insurgency operation at Nambisa village in the Ukhrul district. One weapon is also recovered from the incident site.

  • June 20: One suspected cadre of the UNLF is arrested by the West Bengal Police during a search operation in the capital Kolkata.

    A combined team of Imphal East district commandos and Assam Rifles personnel arrests one UNLF cadre, Soram Herojit alias Naobi, from Kongba.

  • June 15: A woman cadre of the UNLF, identified as Khujaimayum Roshini alias Thamila alias Thabalei, is arrested by Imphal West district police commandos, for her involvement in the June 13 killing of a youth, Sanglai Akham, at Chingmeirong.

  • June 13: 12 persons are captured and later paraded before media persons by UNLF and KYKL militants at an unspecified place in the Bishnupur district for allegedly selling kerosene oil at more than INR 14 per litre.

  • June 13: Militants of the KYKL and UNLF prohibit villagers at Heirok from going outside their locality for ‘defying’ their warning and deciding to join as volunteers of the Special Police Officers (SPOs). They identify five persons for their lead role in appointment of SPOs and procurement of arms, and declare to give ‘capital punishment’ to them.

  • June 11 : Nine persons are captured and later paraded by the UNLF and KYKL militants before the media at unspecified place in the Thoubal district for allegedly selling kerosene oil at high price.

  • June 7: One suspected UNLF militant is shot dead by troops of the 21 Assam Rifles during an encounter at Kakching in the Thoubal district. One 9-mm pistol and a magazine having five rounds of live ammunition are recovered from the possession of the slain militant. One identity card bearing the name, P. Rajen of Chanrangpat of the same district, is also recovered from this possession.

  • June 7: Father of one kerosene oil agent, who is accused of selling oil at more than INR 14 per litre against the joint declaration of the UNLF and KYKL, is paraded by militants of both the groups in the Thoubal district. The spokespersons of the two outfits say that Mohammed Abdul Hei was selling 2500 litres of kerosene oil at the rate of INR 22 per litre.

  • June 6: Assam Rifles personnel arrest one UNLF cadre, Thongam Bishojit, in the general area of Salungpham of Thoubal district.

  • May 31: The Commission headed by S.P. Rajkhowa submits its report to the Manipur Government. The Commission was set up to probe the incident of molestation of more than 20 women by the UNLF and KCP militants at Parbung and Lungthulien under Tipaimukh sub-division in the Churachandpur district in January 2006.

  • May 28: Two UNLF cadres, Danbir alias Talumbi and E. Prem Singh, are arrested by troops of the 21 Assam Rifles during a search operation at Tokpaching under Kakching police station.

  • May 27: 12 persons are captured and later paraded before the media by a combined group of cadres of the KYKL and UNLF for their alleged involvement in the sale of kerosene oil in black market.

    One cadre of the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), armed wing of the UNLF, identified as Heikrujam Thonba alias Robin, is killed in a landmine explosion at Aibol Joupi village in the Chandel district.

  • May 21: The UNLF cadres attacked the Army troops at an unspecified place between Tuitung and Tawang village in the Chandel district. A UNLF spokesperson says that the security forces may have suffered heavy casualty.

  • May 3: One UNLF militant, Brahmacharimayum Ngoubi alias Nongthangsana, is arrested by the Manipur Police from Kongpal Khaidem Leikai in the Imphal East district.

  • May 1: Two Assam Rifles personnel, Rifleman R.K. Trichi and Rifleman B.T. Barbar, are killed while four others sustained injuries when the UNLF ambushed troops travelling on security convoys at two places in the New Somtal area of Chandel district. While one attack is carried out at an unspecified location between the Phairengkot and Hrengkot villages, the other occurred at Molcham.

    One UNLF cadre, L. Umakanta alias Ibomcha, was arrested by the police during a search operation at Moijin in the Thoubal district.

  • April 29: Assam Rifles personnel arrested two UNLF militants, ‘s/s lt’ Thokchom Naobi alias Naoba alias Lanjingba and Khundrakpam Sanathoi Singh, from Wangjing area in the Thoubal district. One 9-mm pistol (imported) with a magazine, seven live rounds and a mobile phone were recovered from them.

  • April 29: The UNLF and the KYKL declare to check the hike in price of kerosene oil while exploring the reasons behind the price hike of the same in the local markets. A joint statement of the two outfits signed by ‘deputy secretary organizations’, UNLF, N Ibochou, and ‘secretary publicity and research’ of the KYKL, Langamba Mangang, said they planned to make available kerosene at the control rate of INR 14 per litre through the SK Oil agents. The outfits have also said that except the authorized agents, no one else could sell kerosene in the markets.

  • April 25 : Two suspected UNLF cadres, Kabrabam Premjit alias Ibai and Elangbam Kanto, are shot dead by Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at Kharungpat under Kakching police station in the Thoubal district. While the other militants managed to escape, two Chinese 9-mm pistols with four live rounds and two empty cases of 9-mm ammunition are recovered from possession of the slain militants.

  • April 19: One UNLF cadre is arrested by the SFs during a search operation at Patsoi in the Imphal West district.

    Leaders of the KCP, KYKL, PREPAK and UNLF, while celebrating the ‘28th foundation day’ of the KCP, pledge to end all factional strifes.

  • April 18: The dead body of a former UNLF militant, Irom Ratan, is recovered by the police from Keinou Thongkha. He was reportedly killed by suspected cadres of another militant group at Keinou Thongkha Chiru Lambi under Bishenpur police station on April 17-night.

  • April 5: One UNLF miitant, Kakchingtabam Somo alias Nganba, is arrested from Sekta Makha Leikai in the Imphal East district.

  • March 15: The MPA cadres of the UNLF attack a post of the Assam Rifles (AR) at T. Minnou village near the Myanmar international border, under Moreh police station in the Chandel district and claimed causing heavy casualties and damage to the post. The UNLF while claiming responsibility for the attack said that it was carried out by a company of the 293 battalion of MPA under "Operation Canon" and added that around 10 soldiers may have died. However, the AR authorities stated that only one trooper died and four others were wounded in the incident. An AR statement added that two militants were killed and five others wounded in the retaliatory action by the soldiers.

  • March 11: Two dead bodies are recovered by the police from Keinou Thonga in the Bishnupur district. The UNLF claims that both were cadres of the outfit and were killed for deserting the outfit's camp with weapons and selling the same to the NSCN-IM.

  • March 5: Assam Rifles said their troops arrest two UNLF militants during a search operation in the Lamdeng Khunou area of Imphal West district.

  • February 26: The 'publicity secretary' of the UNLF, identified as Ksh Yoiheiba, claimed that cadres of its armed wing, the MPA, have 'reoccupied' New Samtal, Layang and its surrounding areas, occupied by the security forces during the counter-insurgency Operation Samtal-II launched in November 2007. He also claimed that six militants, killed by the Assam Rifles personnel at Thangbung Minou village in the Chandel district on February 24, are not UNLF cadres.

  • February 23: Six suspected UNLF militants are killed by Assam Rifles personnel during an encounter at a border village in the Chandel district.

  • February 21: The UNLF claims that five security force (SF) personnel are killed while many others injured in an ambush by its armed wing, the MPA, at Muolvaikhup village under Kamjong sub-division in the Ukhrul district. The Assam Rifles, however, says that only one trooper is injured and denies any casualty.

  • February 19: One UNLF cadre, identified as Lisham Biten Singh, is arrested from Waithou Bazar in the Thoubal district.

  • February 11: A militant of the UNLF, identified as Salam Biren alias Manggal of Keibul Mayai Leikai, was found shot dead on at Hiyanglam Lai Panganba under Kakching police station in the Thoubal district.

  • February 1: Security forces arrested one UNLF cadre, identified as SS Cpl Somen alias Ningaidaba, from the general area of Sagolband Heinoubok in the Imphal West district.

  • January 29: The UNLF captured two parsons, identified as Mayanglambam Suresh alias Lamphel alias George alias Oja and Hankhulan Haokip, for allegedly extorting ransom in the name of the outfit. Demand letters addressed to Churachandpur Shanting Taxi Association, LDA Director and Loktak Hydro Electric Power House and various blank demand letters were 'recovered' from their possession. A UNLF spokesman said that INR 5500 had already been extorted from a family of Thangmeiband area and INR 10,000 from a saw mill at Mongsangei were ordered by one 'advisor' T. Kom and 'finance secretary' T. Joseph.

    A UNLF spokesman claims that cadres of its armed wing, the MPA, attacked the security posts at Molcham and Khenjang. He added that the security forces from the posts at Old Somtal, Laijang and Chaljang retreated following heavy pressure from the MPA cadres.

  • January 28: One UNLF cadre is arrested. during a search operation in the Imphal West district.

  • January 23: UNLF militants attacked a post of the Assam Rifles located at Nambisa village in the Kamjong subdivision of Ukhrul district. While UNLF senior publicity officer Yoiheiba claimed to have destroyed three barracks, two bunkers and caused multiple casualties in the attack, official sources stated that no casualties or damage to property was caused in the incident.

  • January 15: Briefing the media at New Samtal, Brigadier Raymond Noronha, commander 26 sector of the IGAR (south), stated that the whole area of the Samtal has been cleared of the UNLF presence and they have been pushed back into the jungles of Myanmar. A hand out of HQ IGAR (south) said 14 militants were killed. It also claims to have busted five militant camps and recovered "a large quantum of warlike stores and rations" from these camps. Till date, 198 IEDs have been recovered and destroyed from the region.

  • January 12: Two UNLF militants and their two Bangladeshi guides were arrested at Jorabat in Assam en route to their camps in Bangladesh via Meghalaya. The team comprising the UNLF's 'lieutenant' Thangjam Kumar alias Nirig, and its 'second lieutenant' Narengbam Loken alias Banjamin and guides Sushil Sinha and Nirmal Sinha were heading towards Shillong when police intercepted their vehicle at Jorabat on the outskirts of the city. Rati Kuri, the driver of the vehicle who is a resident of Meghalaya, was also arrested.

  • January 10: The security forces claimed to have retrieved New Lajang, the last village in the Somtal region of Chandel district, which was under control of the UNLF. An official spokesman said the UNLF and other militant outfits deserted the area recently and that Somtal was now free of militants. He stated that 13 UNLF cadres were killed and many more injured during the counter-insurgency operation that began on November 18. Twenty soldiers were injured while tracing and destroying improvised explosive devices.

  • January 9: One UNLF cadre, Thounaojam Mangi Singh alias Thingel, is arrested from Patsoi near Oil Pump area in the Imphal West District. He confessed to have got basic military training at Chumnu in Myanmar. Two more UNLF cadres, identified as Ravi Mocha and Cho Zaycha, were arrested from Kamjong Bazar under Chassad police station in the Ukhrul district. Zaycha is a Myanmar national.

  • January 8: One former UNLF cadre, Wakhem Purnachandra Singh, is killed by the KRA militants at his residence at Kairang Litan Makhong under Heingang police station in the Imphal East district. Th. Misao, 'information and publicity secretary' of the KRA, said that the KRA "punished" Purnachandra for his involvement in the killing of a senior leader of his outfit, Khuplam Hangsing, in Delhi on November 12, 2007.

  • January 6: One UNLF militant, Sarangthem Wayencha alias Naobi, is arrested from his residence at Moirangkampu in the Imphal East district. One more UNLF militant, Kangjam Bungcha alias Sanatomba, was arrested during a search operation.

  • January 5: One unidentified UNLF cadre is arrested during a search operation in the Imphal East district.

  • January 3: Delhi Police stated that the killing of Khuplam Hangsing, chief of the KRA, was carried out at a flat in West Delhi on November 12, 2007 at the behest of a UNLF cadre, W. Luwangamba. A monetary dispute led to the murder of Hangsing, police said. However, a 'senior publicity officer' of the UNLF, Ksh. Yoiheiba, denied the outfit's role in the killing.

  • December 27: One UNLF cadre, Chanam Ibomcha alias Khongdum alias Devadas alias Khongthan, is arrested from Dharmasala in the Imphal West district.

  • December 26: Two UNLF militants, Nongmaithem Prasad alias Pasha Singh and Usham Jadumani alias Raju, are arrested from Yaiskul Chingakham Leirak in the Imphal West district.

  • December 21: The UNLF claims to have killed at least five security force (SF) personnel and injured many others at Tuileng near Molcham. The outfit also said that cadres of its armed wing, the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), used rockets and sophisticated weapons in the encounter in which one of its cadres was injured.

  • December 19: A UNLF spokesperson said that cadres of the outfit ‘seized’ tobacco products worth INR 12 lakhs from a mini-truck bound for Moreh at Koirengei on the National Highway-39 on December 12. The tobacco products, which were being transported from Guwahati, belonged to one Jiten Bihari of Thangal Bazaar and one Khumak Kuki of Moreh. He said that the UNLF handed over tobacco products to Sagolband Thingom Leikai Youth Welfare Club’s volunteers, who later set ablaze those products. He asks Bihari and Khumak Kuki to ‘surrender’ before the outfit by December 30. He also mentioned that Bihari asked the outfit to let him off on payment of a sum of INR 2 lakhs.

  • December 17: The UNLF claims that at least seven security force personnel, including an officer, are killed and three others wounded in an attack by cadres of its armed wing, MPA, near Old Somtal in the Chandel district. According to a statement issued by the UNLF 'senior publicity officer' Ksh Yoiheiba, cadres of the MPA (293 Battalion) attacked a vehicle convoy of the security forces near Old Somtal. However, Assam Rifles spokesperson, Colonel L.M. Pant, denies the UNLF claim and said that the outfit was indulging in false propaganda to boost the morale of its cadres.

  • December 15: The UNLF claims to have killed five security force personnel and wounded seven others in an attack on a security post at Aeiyang village in the Sajik area of Chandel district.

  • December 13: Telegraph reports that the Army has retrieved Khenjoy and Sehlon ridges from the UNLF's domination during the ongoing counter-insurgency operation in the Chandel district. The Army is currently engaged in clearing the Somtal area of IEDs and more than 68 IEDs were reportedly defused in November 2007.

  • December 7: Kanglaonline, quoting intelligence sources, reports that around 250 UNLF cadres, including some important leaders, are still in Lajang village which is yet to be retrieved by the troops engaged in the ongoing counter-insurgency ‘Operation Somtal-2’ in the Chandel district. The report added that one media team spotted a bunker dug by the militants at Sehlon village. "UGs keep coming and going at our village but they never stay for a long time," said Jamkhothang Mate, a villager.

  • December 5: The UNLF claims to have killed two security force personnel and wounded many others at Thanjal village between Old Samtal and Laithung village in the Chandel district. A spokesperson for the outfit claimed that the security forces have retreated from the village after these losses.

  • December 4: The Assam Rifles refutes allegations that hardship was inflicted on the local populace during the ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Somtal area of Chandel district. .

  • December 2: The Dingpi Area Peace and Development Committee while speaking to the media in the capital Imphal complains against the ongoing counter-insurgency operations launched by the security forces targeting the UNLF militants in the Somtal area of Chandel district bordering Myanmar.

  • November 30: One UNLF militant is killed by security force (SF) personnel during the ongoing counter-insurgency operation at Tuiting near Wayang in Somtal of Chandel district. One AK-47 rifle is recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

  • November 25: A counter-insurgency operation targeting the UNLF militants is reportedly continuing in the Somtal area of Chandel district. According to Army sources, the militants managed to escape from their hideouts following the operation. Another Army source stated that the troops have cleared and secured the area till L Dongjoi Moljol and Phaisangjang along the Khengjoi ridge line, areas along the Sehlon ridge line, and the area upto Phoilen. The SF personnel recovered and later destroyed 57 improvised explosive devices (IED) which were laid by the UNLF. Two soldiers, Bharat Patel and Mohammed Iqbal, were wounded while neutralising the IEDs. However, the UNLF claimed to have killed at least seven SF personnel and wounded several others.

  • November 24: Sangai Express reports that the security forces (SFs) launched a counter-insurgency operation targeting the UNLF militants at Somtal area in the Chandel district. 28 IEDs were recovered and the UNLF cadres exfiltrated to neighbouring Myanmar following the operation.

  • November 23: The UNLF reiterates its demand for a plebiscite in a statement on the eve of its 43rd ‘raising day’. "We will continue our armed struggle to regain the sovereignty and independence of Manipur even more vigorously as long as the issue of plebiscite remains unsettled," the ‘central committee’ of the outfit said in its annual statement. The outfit described the peace talks as a trap to suppress the ‘liberation struggle’.

  • November 22: One post of the Assam Rifles is attacked by the UNLF militants at Nambisha village under Kamjong sub-division in the Ukhrul district. The UNLF, while claiming responsibility for the attack, states that cadres of its armed wing, the Manipur People’s Army (MPA), had earlier attacked and destroyed a security forces’ camp at Ishi village in the Sajik Tampak area on November 6. Since the destruction of the camp, a large number of security force personnel entered into the area where the ‘293 battalion’ of the MPA was operating.

  • November 21: One UNLF militant, Ahanthem Nandakishore alias Naoba alias Parihan, is arrested from Kwakeithel area in the Imphal West district.

  • November 10: Manipur Police arrested an employee of the State Social Welfare Department, Samjetshabam Angou Singh, for his involvement in the deduction of money from contractors engaged in the construction of Anganwadi (childcare) centres under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (Education for All Campaign). Police said that Angou Singh, hailing from Kangjabi Leirak in the Imphal West district, was asked by the UNLF to give them extortion money at the quarters of Heikham Borajao Singh, the Legislator belonging to the Communist Party of India, at Babupara in capital Imphal. One PREPAK militant was earlier arrested from Borajao Singh’s quarters on October 27.

  • Telegraph quoting the confession of Kughalu Mulatonu, a 'kilonser (minister)' of the NSCN-K, reported that the ULFA, NSCN-K and the UNLF and some other Northeast-based militant groups clandestinely met in Bangkok in 2006 to discuss how to revive the dormant Indo-Burma Revolutionary Front (IBRF). "I personally did not visit, but our representatives were there at the meeting in Bangkok in 2006," informed Mulatonu. .

  • November 4: Imphal Free Press reports that the UNLF has asked members of the erstwhile board of directors of the Imphal Urban Cooperative Bank led by Kh. Gourakishore not to serve on the newly constituted board of adminstrators from the bank. The board of directors of the bank had been reportedly dissolved in June 2007 for various irregularities.

  • November 1: One UNLF cadre, Laishram Nanao alias Nongdrel, is arrested from the house of a person, Keisham Rojen Kumar, at Keisham Leikai in the Imphal West district. Following his confession, another cadre of vthe same outfit, identified as Ashem Deepak alias Dingku, is also arrested from an unspecified place near Loklaobung bridge.

  • October 28: Three UNLF cadres, Hemam Boy alias Wangdamba, Thangjam Dhamen alias Imoba and Keisham Chandra alias Takhaiba, are arrested from Maharani Bridge in the Imphal West district.

  • October 23: A Delhi Sessions court refuses to grant bail to T. H. Shyam Kumar Singh, the Deputy Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, who is accused of aiding the UNLF. The Delhi Police had reportedly arrested Singh along with two 'lieutenant colonels' of the UNLF while trying to board a Kathmandu-bound flight from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on October 2, 2006. A charge sheet was filed indicting him for offences pertaining to crimes against the state and other provisions of the Indian Penal Code. Singh was elected as the Deputy Speaker in August 2007, after winning the Assembly election while lodged in Tihar jail, Delhi.

  • October 18: One UNLF cadre, Potsangbam Dhananjoy alias Naba alias Taibangnganba, said to be a medical officer of the outfit, is arrested by the SFs from Thoubal Wangkhem Litan Leikai in the Thoubal district.

MPLF, the KLO and TPDF also jointly appeal to all the people and militant outfits in the Northeast region to unite.

  • November, 1: Manipur Police brought back four UNLF cadres, arrested earlier in October by the Meghalaya Police and later remanded by a magistrate to police custody, Two UNLF cadres, Tongbram Inao Singh alias Tiken and Laishangthem Naoba alias Pari, were arrested from the Patsoi area in Imphal West district.

    Polices sources said that, one motor cycle was recovered from the possession of the arrested militant.

  • October 28: Three UNLF cadres, Khulem Maniton Singh, Khumu-kacham Dabal Singh alias Jeevan and Konthoujam Megha Chandra Singh were arrested from the Patsoi area.

  • March 21: According to the 2005 Annual Report of the Manipur Police, 23 militants including three UNLF cadres, surrendered during the year.

  • March 18: The Churachandpur district-based Hmar Inpui, apex body of the Hmar community, gives its full support to the allegations that a number of Hmar women were criminally assaulted by cadres of the UNLF and KCP in the Tipaimukh subdivision on January 16, 2006. Chief Minister Ibobi Singh disclosed in the Legislative Assembly that a judicial inquiry headed by a former Judge of West Bengal High Court will investigate the issue.

  • March 14: A youth, identified as Ibohanbi alias Ramesh, is shot at and wounded and later paraded before the media at an unspecified place in the Bishnupur district by the UNLF cadres for his alleged ‘promiscuous behaviour and misuse of the outfit’s name for personal benefit’.

  • March 13: HPC-D refutes the accusation of its involvement in the displacement of Hmar people from Manipur made by the UNLF.

  • March 11: A woman, Hoinu Haokip, is killed and three persons, including two women, are injured in a UNLF triggered bomb blast at Hollenjang village in the Chandel district.

  • March 11: The HPC-D accuses the KCP of its involvement along with the UNLF in the assault on Hmar women and extortion of money from Hmar civilians in the Churachandpur district.

  • March 10: Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh, while responding to a debate in the Legislative Assembly, assures to find out the facts regarding the issue of alleged criminal assault on Hmar women by non-tribal militant outfits, including the UNLF, in the Parbung and Tipaimukh areas of Churachandpur district in January 2006. "The government will endorse the unanimous decision of the House to find out the facts," the Chief Minister said.

  • March 8: On the occasion of International Women's Day, a large public rally of at least 10, 000 people is organized by a conglomerate of four women's organizations, the Joint Women`s Organisation, in the streets of Churachandpur district in protest against the alleged assault on Hmar women by non-tribal militant outfits, including the UNLF, on January 16-night at Lungthulien village in the Tipaimukh subdivision.

  • March 1: A UNLF cadre is arrested by Assam Rifles personnel from an unspecified place. Explosives are reportedly recovered from the arrested militant.

  • February 28: An IED expert belonging to the UNLF, identified as 'SS' Pvt Premjit, is arrested from Ahalup in the Ukhrul district. IED material and explosives are recovered from the possession of the militant who is suspected to be involved in a number of bomb blasts in and around Imphal.

  • February 24: Manipur Government sends relief material for Hmar refugees, who are presently living in the neighbouring State of Mizoram after being reportedly driven away by the UNLF from Churachandpur district.

  • February 22: UNLF kills a person, Ningthoujam Kennedy alias Jiten, at an unidentified place as 'punishment' for his alleged connivance with the security force personnel and 'involvement in extortion from the people on behalf of the outfit'.

  • February 18: A militant belonging to the MPA, armed wing of the UNLF, is killed and four others, including three SF personnel, are injured in an encounter at Eigyang village in the Chandel district.

  • February 16: A UNLF militant, L. Nganba alias Khagemba, is killed and four Assam Rifles personnel are wounded in two separate encounters between SFs and cadres of the MPA, armed wing of the UNLF, at Eigyang near Sajik Tampak under Chakpikarong police station in the Chandel district.

  • February 15: A UNLF cadre, Elangbam Boinao, is shot dead by personnel of the Assam Rifles in an encounter at a place near Kakching Khunou under Waikhong police station in the Thoubal district. An AK-47 rifle with magazine and seven live rounds of AK-47 ammunition are recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Another militant managed to escape.

  • February 15: Five Army personnel are wounded in a UNLF triggered IED explosion along the National Highway-39 near Tasar Farm at Sangakpham in the Imphal East district.

  • February 15: UNLF asks KCP to 'produce a white paper on the charges leveled against' the journalist Ratan Luwangcha within a week. The journalist was attacked and wounded by KCP cadres on February 8.

  • February 10: A security force personnel, who was wounded on January 8 in a UNLF triggered blast at Ningthoukhong in the Bishnupur district, succumbs to his injuries.

  • February 6: A UNLF cadre is arrested from Sekmai in the Thoubal district.

  • February 5: A soldier is wounded in an ambush by MPA, the armed wing of UNLF, at Sugnu in the Thoubal district.

  • February 2: One militant is killed, while three others are wounded and an equal number of them abducted during an internecine clash between suspected cadres of the UNLF and NSCN -IM at a place under Kasom Khullen police station in the Ukhrul district. All the casualties are NSCN-IM cadres.

  • January 27: HPC-D’s ‘information and publicity secretary’ R. Palate rejects UNLF’s ‘accusation’ that his outfit is responsible for the 'torture' of villagers of Parbung and Tipaimukh subdivisions in the Churachandpur district. He says that the Barak river region has been the main source of income and means of livelihood for the people of Tipaimukh, "but since UNLF’s ‘occupation’ of the region, heavy ‘taxes’ on all items/commodities pertaining to the Hmars without the ‘consent’ of the HPC-D had paved way for the deteriorating relationship between the UNLF and the Hmar outfit."

  • January 24: The HSA accuses UNLF at Aizawl for harassing the Hmar community in south Manipur.

  • January 23: The HAS claims at the Shillong Press Club in Shillong that 81 people are killed in landmine blasts and booby traps planted by Manipur-based militants, including MPLF and UNLF, at Tipaimukh in the Churachandpur district in the past two years.

  • January 22: Two UNLF cadres and one security force (SF) are killed in the counter insurgency Operation Dragnet in the Parbung and Thanlon sub-divisions of Churachandpur district. So far in this operation, nine UNLF cadres and two SF personnel, including an Army officer, have been killed, according to General Officer Commanding of the Army's 57 Mountain Division, Major General G. G. Dwivedi.

  • January 20: A Lieutenant Colonel of the Indian Army, Rajiv Bakshi, is killed by militants in an ambush at Parbung area under Tipaimukh sub-division in the Churachandpur district, and four UNLF cadres are also killed in SFs’ retaliatory firing following the ambush. Four AK-47 rifles along with a huge cache of ammunition, explosives and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) are recovered from the incident site.

  • January 14: A ‘retired’ cadre of the UNLF, Oinam Pahari Singh, is killed by suspected PREPAK cadres at Kumbi Awang Leikai under Kumbi police station in the Bishnupur district.

  • January 11: Two women, Tochil and Lunpui, are injured in a clash between cadres of the UNLF and HPC–D at Lunthilien village under Parbung police station in the Churachandpur district.

  • January 10: A UNLF cadre, Sansenba, is killed in an encounter with the SF personnel at Khoubuk village under Sugnu police station in Chandel district. One 9 mm US-made pistol with two live rounds, AK-47 ammunition, one combat shirt and a paper with photographs of UNLF cadres are recovered from the incident site.

  • January 7: Two suspected HPC-D cadres are killed in an encounter with UNLF militants at Damdei under Parbung police station in the Churachandpur district.

  • January 3: Three SF personnel are killed and five others wounded during an encounter with the UNLF cadres at Longpi village under Nungba police station in the Tamenglong district.

  • January 2: One SF personnel is killed in an IED explosion triggered by suspected UNLF cadres at Munlian Ghat village under the Jiribam police station in the Tamenglong district.

2005

  • December 27: Four UNLF cadres and one SF personnel are killed in an encounter at Ningthoukhong Mamang Pat near Loktak Lake in the Bishnupur district. One AK-56 rifle and a magazine with 30 live rounds are recovered from the incident site.

  • December 26: Two UNLF cadres, Ratikanta Pukhrambam alias Babocha and L. Brajamani, reportedly involved in recruiting local youth, are arrested at Awang Jiri Mayai Leikai in the Imphal West district. Demand notes of the outfit are recovered from their possession.

  • December 16: Three UNLF militants, identified as ‘SS pvt’ Elangbam Hemanta, ‘SS’ Ningombam Bomen and Koijam Tomba, are arrested respectively from the Uyemok Mamang Leikai, Keibi Awang Leikai and Kameng localities.

  • December 11: A ‘private’ of the UNLF, Samadram Benerjit alias Najban, is arrested and four rounds of ammunition are recovered from his possession.

  • December 11: A UNLF militant, ‘corporal’ Morieo, is killed in an encounter in the Chakpikarong subdivision of Chandel district. His body was, however, been taken away by his colleagues. One AK-47 rifle, one magazine, 31 rounds of ammunition and incriminating documents are recovered from the encounter site.

  • December 6: A Border Security Force BSF) personnel is killed and two others injured in a UNLF triggered IED explosion at Yairipok Bamon Leikai Mang in the Thoubal district.

  • November 30: A UNLF cadre, Sanabam Apik Singh, along with a KYKL cadre is arrested from Yambem village in the Thoubal district.

  • November 19: One SF personnel and four civilians are killed during an exchange of fire between the SF personnel and a combined team of NSCN-K and UNLF militants at Longmai part-III village under Longmai police station in the Tamenglong district.

  • November 14: UNLF claims responsibility for the November 12 ambush on the CRPF foot patrol. The outfit says that the attack is a reply to the "tall talks of Lt General Arvind Sharma, GOC 3 Corps of the Indian Army". It further adds that it "can strike at the Indian forces anytime and anywhere at will".

  • November 9: A UNLF cadre, Thongam Gandhi alias Prithibi, is arrested from his residence at Khurai Kongpal Thongam Leikai in the Imphal East district.

  • November 7: UNLF has refuted the claim by GOC 3 Corps, Maj. Gen. A.K. Samantaray, that several militant outfits active in the Imphal valley, including the UNLF and PLA, are in contact with the army and are contemplating surrender. In a statement, Ksh. Yoiheiba, ‘senior publicity officer’ of the outfit, describes the claim as "lies and rubbish" which are "intended to create confusion among the rank and file of the UNLF."

  • November 5: A UNLF cadre, Yahounganba alias Khumai Nanao, is arrested from Waikhong in the Thoubal district. Following his confession, another cadre of the outfit, Kiran Leishangthem, was also arrested from the Thoubal Leishangthem area. One pistol and three live rounds are recovered from him.

  • November 3: The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has extended the ban on four militant outfits, including the UNLF operating in Manipur, for two years. Addressing press persons after a CCS meeting chaired by Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee says that the Union Government has decided to extend the ban on UNLF, PLA, KCP and KYKL. He also informs that the ban is extended as the outfits still continue to indulge in unlawful activities in India’s North East.

  • November 1: UNLF is requested, by ‘chief commander’ of the mobile task force belonging to City Meitei faction of the KCP, N. City Meitei, to reconsider its decision to impose a ban on his outfit. N City Meitei says that his outfit does not indulge in abduction for ransom and does not create terror for the public unreasonably.

  • October 20: A UNLF cadre, Tekcham Romenkanta alias Ibungo alias Puya alias Malem, is arrested at Palace Gate in the Imphal city.

  • October 18: Two KCP cadres are killed by suspected UNLF militants at Tentha in the Thoubal district, while another cadre manages to escape. UNLF had earlier imposed a ban on all the three factions of the KCP ‘accusing’ them of indulging in extortion in the name of revolution. The two slain militants have been identified as Khumukcham Ibungo and Yengkokpam Amu alias Rojen belonging to the Prithvi and Emoinu factions respectively.

  • October 17: UNLF claims to have taken into custody three KCP cadres during ‘special drives’ carried out by the outfit against KCP cadres involved in extortion activities.

  • October 11: Two militants, one each belonging to the UNLF and PLA, are killed in an internecine clash at Kam Ranga village under Jiribam police station in the Imphal West district. The slain militant of the UNLF is identified as Ningombam Sanathoi alias Umbilen.

  • October 9: Four SF personnel are killed by the UNLF at Zoupi under Chakpikarong police station in the Chandel district.

  • October 3: A UNLF ‘lance corporal’, Salam James alias Lantemba alias Alberson alias Santosh, is arrested from Moirang Lamkhai in the Bishnupur district.

  • October 1: UNLF declares a ban on the activities of the KCP-P. A statement by the outfit says that the KCP-P "has gone against the wishes and aspirations of the people and has been leaving a bad impression on revolutionary movements launched by other underground organizations".

  • September 28: Two UNLF cadres, Chingangbam Naobi alias Chand and Moirangthem Bimolchand alias Roshan alias Melei, are arrested respectively from JN Hospital Campus at Porompat in the Imphal East District and from Ningthoukhong in the Bishnupur district. A .38 pistol along with one magazine and six round of ammunition are seized from the latter’s possession.

  • September 18: A UNLF cadre and an eight-year old girl are killed during an encounter between the army personnel and militants at Pamzal village in the Churachandpur district.

  • September 16: A UNLF cadre, Kh. Diamond, is arrested from an unspecified place in the Bishnupur district.

  • September 13: A UNLF cadre, Philem Manaobi, is arrested from Moirang Lamkhai in the Bishnupur district.

The pradhan, Sagolsem Surendrakumar, is paraded before journalists at an unspecified place in the Ukhrul district where he has reportedly confessed his ‘misconduct’.

  • July 27: One UNLF cadre along with three of the PLA is arrested from Kakching Khunou and its surrounding area in the Thoubal district. One 9 mm pistol, three live rounds of ammunition and incriminating documents are recovered from their possession.

  • July 15: A UNLF cadre, Sanasam Loken Singh, is arrested from the Khagempalli Nganappi Thong area in the Imphal West district. Three of his accomplices, however, have managed to escape. Acting upon information provided by him, police personnel subsequently arrested another cadre of the outfit, Sanasam Rabi Singh alias Lan-puba, from the Kwakeithel Nganappi Thong area.

  • July 15: Manipur’s Legislative Assembly unanimously adopts a resolution urging the Union Government to hold peace talks with militant outfits operating in the State. During discussion on the resolution, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh rules out the UNLF’s demand for a plebiscite under the aegis of the UN on question of Manipur’s sovereignty. He says, "The response (of the UNLF) to the appeal for peace talks is positive. But holding a plebiscite and involving a third party in resolving the problem is not practicable. The negotiations should be under the Constitution. It is an internal matter."

  • July 6: Two UNLF cadres are killed and three SF personnel wounded in an encounter at Ashang Tangkhul village along the Myanmar border in the Ukhrul district. The outfit claims that the incident occurred when the SFs tried to over run one of its camps. However, it denies having suffered any casualty.

  • June 30: UNLF claims to have injured two soldiers stationed at Pukhao in a bomb attack targeting a security convoy.

  • June 26: A heavy exchange of fire has been reported between UNLF cadres and SFs at the border town of Bhutankhal near Jiribam in the Imphal East district. The outfit’s claim of killing four SFs in the encounter is denied by the troops.

  • June 20: Eight militants, including six UNLF cadres, are killed near Phoipi in Henglep area of the Churachandpur district. A cache of weapons, including six AK-47 rifles, one RPG with four rockets, one M-16 rifle, one G-3 rifle, a shot gun and a lethode launcher are recovered from the encounter site.

  • June 14: Three UNLF cadres, including a woman, are arrested in the Sekmaijin, Laphupat Tera and Arong Nongmaikhong areas of the Imphal West district. Their interrogation subsequently leads to the recovery of arms and ammunition from an abandoned camp of the outfit in the Arong Nongmaikhong locality. The cache includes an AK-56 bayonet, four magazines, 100 live bullets, one 9 mm pistol along with four live ammunition, two communication devices and some incriminating documents.

  • June 11: A UNLF cadre, Mayengbam Khoilencha alias Open, is arrested from the Lamphel area of the Imphal city.

  • May 16: A former UNLF cadre, Mandengbam Ton, is killed by unidentified militants in front of SAI Museum at Takyelpat in the Imphal West district.

  • May 15: A UNLF cadre is arrested from Lamboikhongnangkhong in the Imphal West district.

  • May 12: A UNLF militant is killed and two SF personnel along with two civilians are wounded during an encounter near Bhutankhal Makha Leikai under Jiribam police station in the Imphal East district. One UMG, one IED and a radio set are recovered from the slain militant. The outfit, however, claims to have killed two soldiers and injured three others.

  • April 25: Two Assam Rifles (AR) personnel are killed and four others are wounded by the UNLF at Sonapur under Jiribam police station in the Imphal East district. UNLF, however, claims that six AR personnel are killed in the ambush.

  • April 20: UNLF claims responsibility for the April 17 incident of abducting and killing a civilian at the Khabam Maning Leikai area in the Bishnupur district. The outfit has reportedly ‘accused’ the civilian for his involvement in killing one of its cadres in 2000.

  • April 3: A former UNLF cadre is killed by unidentified terrorists near Heirok part II Litan Makhong in the Thoubal district.

  • April 1: A huge cache of arms and ammunition are recovered from the militants belonging to the UNLF and KNF at Khongsai Veng under Porompat police station in the Imphal East district. The cache has included 74 electronic detonators, 75 ordinary detonators, a .38 pistol with one magazine, 16 rounds of .38 ammunition, two 30 mm anti-aircraft shells, 169 rounds of .303 rifles, communication devices, nametags and badges of the outfits. Three terrorists of these two outfits are also arrested subsequent to the recovery.

  • March 25: Two NSCN-IM militants are killed and another injured in an internecine clash with the UNLF and another unidentified Kuki outfit at Yangnom in the Ukhrul district.

  • March 21: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh informs the Legislative Assembly that his Government will send feelers to the outlawed UNLF to initiate peace talks, but rules out the possibility of involving a third party in the process.

  • March 9: An ‘administrative camp’ of the proscribed UNLF is neutralized near Khoirentak in the Bishnupur district and a large quantity of ration is recovered.

  • March 5: A UNLF militant is arrested from the Imphal East district.

  • March 4: Two UNLF terrorists are killed at Laphupattera in the Bishnupur district. Four AK-56 rifles, six magazines, 66 bullets, two Chinese made hand grenades and a communication device are recovered from the incident site.

  • March 3: A girl, suspected to be a UNLF informer, is arrested from Tuilaphai village in the Churachandpur district along with six rounds of ammunition and seven empty cases.

  • February 26: UNLF reiterates its demand for involving the United Nations to achieve a solution to Manipur’s armed conflict. The outfit had earlier issued a four-point proposal in this connection.

  • February 24: Six militant camps, including two of the UNLF, are neutralized and a huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered at Keibul Lamjao in the Bishnupur district.

  • February 23: Three UNLF terrorists are arrested from the Kekrupat Bus Parking area in Imphal West district.

  • February 20: Three UNLF terrorists are shot dead by the BSF personnel at the Kamalpur border area of Dhalai district in Tripura. One civilian sustained injuries and one UNLF cadre is arrested. One AK-47 rifle, one pistol along with magazines and a mobile set are recovered from the incident site. The encounter is reported to have started, after the entry of an armed group of UNLF cadres into Bagaicherri village from their Bangladesh hideout and abduction of a person, who has reportedly sustained injuries in the crossfire. This is the first incident of killing of a Manipuri outfit’s cadres in an encounter with the SFs in Tripura.

  • February 16: In an attack by NSCN-IM cadres on a UNLF camp near Aven village of Tousem subdivision, one cadre each of the two outfits are killed, according to a spokesperson of the former.

  • February 16: One UNLF cadre is killed and four persons are injured at Mandu village.

  • February 15: Two UNLF cadres are killed in the Tamenglong district.

  • February 8: Three hardcore UNLF cadres, including an ‘area commander’ for the Imphal West district, are arrested by the Imphal West district police from various places. They are identified as Soubam Somen alias Nungaidaba, Moirangthem Rajesh alias Tomcha and Huirom Romen alias Makulong, who are actively involved in several cases of extortion from Government departments, according to the Imphal West district SP, S Ibocha.

  • February 5: One SF personnel is killed and two others are injured in an attack by suspected UNLF cadres on an army post at Gothol in the Churachandpur district.

  • February 2: Responding to Manipur Governor S.S. Sidhu’s appeal to militant groups to come to the negotiation table, the UNLF ‘chairman’, Sana Yaima, in a press statement in Imphal, has come up with a four-point proposal to "end the conflict satisfactorily once and for all." The four proposals are: a ‘plebiscite’ under the supervision of the UN, deployment of a UN peacekeeping force, surrender of all weapons to the peacekeepers and transfer of political power in accordance with the outcome of the plebiscite.

  • January 31: Two SF personnel are wounded in a UNLF-triggered bomb attack at Yairipok in the Thoubal district.

  • January 29: The UNLF has cautioned the NSCN-IM leadership over the latter’s raising once again the Naga integration issue, terming it as a dangerously myopic policy that has the potential to plunge the whole region into endless conflict and chaos. The outfit, in a statement issued by its ‘department of publicity’, has also taken the view that the NSCN-IM, in seeking an exclusive solution to the ‘Indo-Naga political process’ through the creation of a ‘Nagalim’, is indulging in illusion.

  • January 28: A UNLF cadre, Maibam Robert Singh, is arrested along with a .38 pistol at Khurai Thangjam Leikai in the capital Imphal.

  • January 27: Two civilians are wounded in an IED explosion triggered by suspected UNLF terrorists at Sehao Kuki in the Chandel district.

  • January 26: Seven persons, including two SF personnel, are injured in an UNLF-triggered explosion targeting a SF vehicle at Chandrapur village in the Imphal East district.

  • January 24: UNLF admits that two of its cadres are killed in a shoot out with the security forces’ near Singmui Lamkhai in the Churachandpur district on January 23. The outfit adds that it has ‘lost’ one AK 56 rifle, one M-18 and one 9 mm pistol during the incident.

  • January 23: Two suspected cadres of the MPA, armed wing of the UNLF, are killed in the Shingmun area of Churachandpur district. Two automatic rifles, one grenade launcher and one pistol are also recovered from the incident site. Army sources further claim to have unearthed a cache of ammunition, mines, explosives, radio sets and ration belonging to terrorists in the Singhat sub division.

  • January 19: A UNLF terrorist, Ningombam Bipin, is arrested along with several extortion notes from Lamphel Super Market area of capital Imphal.

  • January 17: A UNLF terrorist, Sougrapam Surjit Singh, is arrested from Thangal Bazar in the heart of capital Imphal.

  • January 17: UNLF claims that that ten Army personnel are killed and another ten wounded in an attack, carried out by its MPA cadres at a newly set up Army camp at Tuilaphai in Churachandpur district. However, the Army denies the UNLF claim.

  • January 16: Two army personnel are killed in an encounter between SFs and UNLF cadres at a location between Tuilaphai and Sijon villages in the Churachandpur district.

  • January 15: An UNLF terrorist, Khangembam Angousana, is arrested by the Imphal West District police from North AOC area of capital Imphal.

  • January 10: Three UNLF cadres, identified as Saikhom Shamungou, Sanasan Ngongo Singh and Thiyam Sunder Singh, are killed at Bunghol Khullen village under Yairipok police station limits in the Thoubal district. An AK-47 rifle, two Chinese-make hand-grenades and some ammunition are recovered from the incident site.

  • January 9: A ‘lance corporal’ of the UNLF, Dolen Singh alias Kebru, is arrested from Heingang in the Imphal East district.

  • January 4: A UNLF terrorist, Lamabam David alias Sonaba, is arrested from Takyel Khongban in the capital Imphal.

2004

  • December 21: The UNLF in a statement condemns the ‘punishment’ meted out to the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of Manipur University by the KYKL.

  • December 12: About 200 civilians from Manipur flee to Tamu in Myanmar following heavy exchange of fire between the security forces and cadres of the UNLF in the interior areas of Somtal, Chejang and Tuitong in Chandel district.

  • December 9: A security force personnel and two UNLF terrorists are killed in a series of encounters in the vicinity of Phoibi Ching in the Churachandpur district.

  • December 9: The MPA, armed wing of the UNLF, claims to have killed three Army personnel during an attack between Phoibi Ching and Seneyan Khul in the Churachandpur district.

  • December 8: The UNLF claims to have killed at least four Army personnel in an attack carried out by its armed wing, the MPA, at Tangshang village in Churachandpur district.

2003

  • December 18: The Imphal West district police arrests one UNLF terrorist identified as Yumnam Kiran from Kiyamgei Mamang Leikai.

  • November 24: UNLF calls for a 'united struggle' by all terrorist outfits in the Northeast on its 39th 'raising day commemoration'.

  • November 8: At least eighteen armed KYKL cadres reportedly desert the outfit to join the Manipur People's Army (MPA), armed wing of UNLF, in Manipur.

  • November 5: Two soldiers are killed and three others sustain injuries in a bomb explosion triggered by suspected UNLF terrorists in the Moreh area of Chandel district.

  • October 23: Ten ULF terrorists are killed in separate encounters with the security forces in the Bishenpur and Imphal West districts. One mortar launcher, two AK-56 rifles, two carbine machine guns and one 9 mm pistol, besides a large cache of ammunition are recovered from the slain terrorists.

  • October 13: Three UNLF terrorists are arrested at Kakching Khunou in the Thoubal district.

  • September 18: UNLF terrorists kill one of their former comrades after abducting him on September 15 from the Langol area in the Imphal East district of Manipur.

  • August 24: One UNLF terrorist is killed during an encounter at Nongangkhong in the Thoubal district.

  • August 23: A combined team of Bishnupur police commandos and Central Reserve Police Force personnel kill one suspected UNLF terrorist during an encounter in the Thoubul area.
    Separately, two UNLF terrorists are abducted and later killed by some unidentified gunmen in the Imphal East district near a High School at Thambalkhong Sabal Leikai.

  • July 21: Security force personnel kill at least seven UNLF terrorists in an encounter at Moreh in Chandel district.

  • June 30: Assam Rifles personnel kill two terrorists, including a ‘district secretary’ affiliated to UNLF, during an encounter at Nepat Pali, under Lamlai police post limits, in Imphal East district, Manipur, and recover an AK 56 rifle with 19 live rounds and a US carbine with 24 rounds of ammunition.

  • June 28: Assam Rifles personnel kill two UNLF terrorists, including a ‘district commander’, in an encounter at Mayang Imphal in the Imphal West district.

  • June 27: UNLF ‘finance wing’ member Narengbam Loken is arrested from the house a local resident at Tera Loukrakpam Leikai in the Imphal West District. Cash worth Rupees 130,000 and some incriminating documents are also recovered from his possession.

  • June 19: Two surrendered UNLF cadres employed in the 2nd Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) are killed by unidentified gunmen inside the campus of a local college in Imphal.

  • June 14: Manipur police arrests one UNLF cadre along with six unidentified terrorists in separate Statewide search operations.

  • June 12: Rival terrorist outfits of Manipur - UNLF and the United Kuki Liberation Front (UKLF) - agree to end hostilities between themselves and also decide to work towards resettling villagers displaced as a result of their conflict.

  • April 26: Security force personnel kill one UNLF terrorist during an encounter in Thoubal district and recover a US-marked nine mm pistol, three detonators with wire, 55 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and materials for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) from the encounter site.

  • April 6: UNLF terrorists kill one of their colleagues at Komlaching, under Yairipok police station limits in Thoubal district for indulging in extortion without 'prior permission' of the outfit.

  • February 14: Security forces arrest one self-styled sergeant major and publicity secretary of the UNLF during a combing operation at Uripok.

  • January 20: Security forces arrest four UNLF terrorists from a temple in Jaipur village, Cachar district of Assam.

  • January 10: Three terrorists affiliated to the MPLF, which consists of three groups including the UNLF, are killed in a prolonged encounter at Sajik Tampak in the Chandel district.

  • January 1: Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), which includes the UNLF, asks all outfits in the Northeast to put an end to extortion in the name of armed movement, commencing January 15, 2003.

2002

  • December 8: Ukhrul Superintendent of Police S Manglemjao escapes a UNLF ambush. However, four other policemen are killed in the incident.

  • October 15: UNLF, a member of the MPLF conglomerate comprising of three terrorist outfits, protests the merger of Manipur with the Indian Union, on the anniversary of the merger. Normal life in Manipur is been paralyzed following a seventeen-and-a-half-hour statewide general strike called by the umbrella organization.

  • October 12: A joint team of police commandos arrests two UNLF cadres, identified as Salam Jibarn Singh alias Ichingakpa and Khumukcham Premjit Singh.

  • September 25: MPLF, of which UNLF is a member, calls for people’s support to strengthen traditional brotherhood among peoples and to forge revolutionary solidarity to fight the common enemy.

  • August 10: Red Horns Division of the Army kills an unidentified UNLF terrorist in an encounter in Dooni, under Borbori police station-limits, in Nalbari district of Assam.

  • August 9: Imphal West police arrests UNLF terrorist from Keibul Sangram village.

  • August 6: Border Security Force personnel arrest four UNLF terrorists from a hideout and seize several UNLF combat fatigues and many incriminating documents.

  • July 17: UNLF claims responsibility for the July 16-attack on the 14 Jat Regiment near Jirighat, in Cachar district, Assam. The UNLF claims in statement that 10 troops had been killed in the ambush, laid by its armed wing––the Manipur Peoples Army (MPA).

  • July 18: In a statement, the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) claims responsibility for the July 16-attack on the 14th Jat Regiment near Jirighat and admits that it has linkages with the Assam based United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) terrorists.

A media report quoting official sources accuse UNLF of supplying arms and ammunition to various terrorist outfits in the Northeast with the active connivance of Myanmar’s security forces.

  • July 14: UNLF terrorists attack personnel of the Army’s Jat Regiment from atop the hills of Jujam near Jirighat, in Cachar district, Assam, killing three, including an officer and seriously injuring six others.
  • June 2: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel arrest nine terrorists belonging to the UNLF and the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), including two women, from the Thamnapokpi area of Manipur.
  • May 25: UNLF terrorists lift the ‘ban’ they imposed on two vernacular dailies Poknapham and Kangla Pao, on May 22, for inaccurate reporting of a factional fight between the terrorist groups.
  • May 22: UNLF imposes a ban on the publication of Poknapham and Kangla Pao newspapers accusing them of publishing incorrect reports without verification.
  • April 5: Two terrorists of the UNLF and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) are killed in an internecine clash in Sotobekra, Hengchumpunji and Saikhulphai areas, south of Jiribam.
  • March 27: Two suspected UNLF terrorists are killed in an encounter in Mayang Langjing, on the Khurkhul-Lamsang road.
  • February 21: UNLF terrorists kill four Assam Rifles personnel, including a Captain, and injure three others in an ambush near Yairipok Top Chingtha.
  • February 14: All the 192 terrorists of Manipur arrested in December 2001 by the Myanmar Army are set free. The release took place in four batches beginning January 3.
  • January 27: The Armed wing of the UNLF, Manipur People’s Army (MPA), attacks an Assam Rifles camp in Yairipok in Thoubal district.
  • January 16: A UNLF press statement says the outfit would not participate in the forthcoming State Assembly elections, due in February 2002.

2001

  • December: The Myanmar Army arrests 192 United National Liberation Front (UNLF) terrorists from Tamu and Kalamayeo areas following a series of raids on their hideouts. The arrested men include UNLF chairman R.K. Meghen.
  • November 24: The UNLF’s Manipur People’s Army attacks a BSF camp at the Phubala area in Bishenpur district in Manipur with rocket launchers.

UNLF observes 37th foundation day anniversary.

UNLF says that the idea of a joint ‘liberation struggle’ initiated by the United Liberation Font of Asom (ULFA), National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Khaplang (NSCN-K) and UNLF with the formation of the Indo-Burma Revolutionary Front (IBRF) in 1990 is slowly but definitely becoming a reality.

  • November 25: ULFA claims that the Myanmar Army has seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from UNLF hideouts during the first week of November. The seizures included 1,500 AK series rifles and SLRs,
  • November 17: Police in Hmarkhawlien, Cachar district, arrest two UNLF terrorists fleeing from Jiribam following a clash with the NSCN-IM.

  • November 16: UNLF terrorists attack a Border Security Force (BSF) patrol returning from Morian Bazar in Bishenpur district and trigger two Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosions. Four BSF personnel sustain serious injuries.

  • November 16: Two UNLF cadres were arrested in Cachar district.

  • Nov 2 – 8: Conflicting media reports suggested the arrest of nearly 200 UNLF cadres and leaders in raids conducted by the Myanmarese army.

  • October 14: Three security force personnel were killed by MPA cadres at Kwakta in Bishenpur district.

  • October 4: UNLF killed two security force personnel and injured four others in an ambush in Chandel district.

  • February 13: United National Liberation Front (UNLF) Chief Sanayaima alias Meghen, speaking at the 36th anniversary of the outfit, appreciates Union government's willingness to hold talks with insurgent groups of Northeast. He, however, says issues such as independence of Manipur, right to self-determination and demilitarization must be brought under the ambit of the negotiations.

2000

  • November 23: UNLF, on its 36th Foundation Day, reiterates demand for the liberation of the oppressed people from the Indian Union.
  • June 10: A. Samarendra Singh -- UNLF founder who was also a Manipuri playright and social worker, shot dead by terrorists in Imphal.
  • May 8: Eight Manipur People's Army (MPA) terrorists- cadres of the armed wing of United National Liberation Front (UNLF), killed in an encounter in Wangoo Laipham, Thoubal district.

1999

  • February 15: UNLF militants kill nine security force personnel in Churachandpur district.
