Incidents and Statements involving NLFT: 1989-2012

2012

  • December 23: Two NLFT militants, Bishanjay Tripura and Paritosh Debbarma, of the same outfit surrendered to Police at Ananda Hari Roaja Para village, 48 kilometres south west of Chhawmanu Police Station, in Dhalai District and deposited one wireless set and INR 700.

  • SFs in Bangladesh have reportedly arrested, NLFT 'chief' Biswamohan Debbarma in Dhaka.

  • December 20: Nine militants of NLFT, including 'commander' Suren Debbarma, have surrendered to Security Forces (SFs) at Karbuk, a village near the Indo-Bangla international border under West Tripura District and deposited one AK-47 rifle, one revolver and one grenade. Debbarma had led an ambush on August 20 in 2002 at Hirapur in Gomati District in which 20 TSR personnel were killed and their arms looted.

  • December 17: Suspected NLFT militants abducted three tribal farmers, identified as identified as Para Kumar Tripura (28), Nandaram Tripura (31) and Matiram Tripura (26), from Nibaranpara under Korbok Police Station. Police suspect that the banned NLFT guerrillas might have taken the hostages to nearby Bangladesh.

  • December 14: Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said that notwithstanding Bangladeshi Security Forces crackdown on separatist outfits from India's northeast, their camps still exist in Bangladesh. "At present, there are about 20-22 camps belonging to State based militants in various parts of Bangladesh," Sarkar.

  • Sarkar also said that some NLFT militants, led by Suren Debbarma, were trying to enter into the state from Bangladesh to create troubles before the assembly elections, scheduled to be held in February 2013.

    Sarkar further demanded deployment of more BSF troopers along the India-Bangladesh border, and urged the local people, BSF and Tripura States Rifle personnel to work in coordination to curb the terrorism in the State. Sarkar referring to intelligence inputs said that six to seven camps were recently built by leader of the NLFT, Suren Debbarma at Ayoddhyanagar of Khagraceri District of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.

  • December 12: NLFT released three persons, including two timber merchants, who were abducted by the outfit from Mamit district on November 25.

  • December 8: Three NLFT militants surrendered to Assam Rifles at Gandacherra in Dhalai District.

  • December 1: PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury claimed that the militants of the NLFT are trying to enter the State ahead of 2013 assembly elections through Mizoram. He further claimed that insurgents based in Bangladesh unable to enter Tripura because of barbwire fencing and watch kept at night by tribals in villages but are trying to enter through Mizoram, which has a Congress government.

  • November 27: NLFT militants, the abductors of the two timber merchants and their driver, have sent a ransom note demanding INR 3 million for their release.

  • November 25: Suspected NLFT militants abducted three Tripura residents, two timber merchants and one driver, from Rajibnagar village, in Mamit District of Mizoram.

  • November 20: NLFT abducted three persons, including two school students, last night from two villages in Dhalai District. NLFT militants abducted two school students, Karendra Tripura (16) and Tirtharam Tripura (15), from Purbasingpara and a farmer, Shubhamoy Tripura (48), from Deshraipara, both remote villages under Raisyabari Police Station of the District. Police sources said at least 35 indigenous families from the two villages had left the villages and taken shelter in the Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Headquarters after facing extortion threats from the NLFT.

  • November 15: BSF has requested its Bangladeshi counterpart, BGB to destroy 55 camps of northeast insurgent group in Bangladesh. "Despite a pro-active role of the security forces in Bangladesh to dismantle the camps of insurgents from the region, at least 55 camps still exist there. BSF officials have handed over a list of the camps to them and asked them to demolish the camps," a BSF official said. BSF also requested for early solution of disputes regarding erection of barbed wire fencing in some patches of the international border, the official said.

  • Three NLFT rebels surrendered their arms to the Assam Rifles. They deposited a pistol, grenades, Bangladeshi SIM cards and currency. The surrendered militants were identified as Mancha Debbarma, Manoj Debbarma and Ashok Debbarma.

  • November 11: SFs arrested four NLFT militants from their hideout at Bhandarima area in Kanchanpur subdivision of North Tripura District. "We could catch four NLFT rebels identified as Pabitra Reang, Akchha Reang, Bansarai Reang, Biladhan Reang and the house winner Ratia Reang. We could not recover any arms and ammunition as three other militants had fled with them before we reached," said SDPO-Kanchanpur Sudip Paul. "We have been carrying out special search operations all over Kanchanpur subdivision and NLFT will not be able to do anything," said Paul.

  • November 9: The BSF has submitted the names and locations of the North East militant campus to Bangladesh during the border-coordinated meeting between the BSF and BGB held at Sylhet from November 5 to 8. BSF PRO, Ravi Gandhi, said, "We have given them all the details and they have assured us of taking action against the insurgents."BSF also raised the issues including the presence of insurgent groups like GNLA, HNLC, NDFB and NLFT in Bangladeshi territory & efforts to prevent smuggling of FICN.

  • November 2: The confession made by NLFT militant Pushparam Reang who was arrested on October 30, 2012 along with his aide Monojit Reang, revealed that the NLFT militants had been regrouping in Kanchanpur sub-division of North Tripura District with orders to carry out abduction of Government teachers and engineers at the instruction of Upendra Reang, the self-styled Vice President of the outfit.

  • The detainee reportedly confessed that the militants were stationed at Buddhapara in Kanchanpur to abduct two Government teachers and two Government engineers. The Police did not reveal the names of the targets on security grounds.

    Security Forces arrested three militants belonging to the Assam based UDLA from Kanchanpur in North Tripura District and recovered INR 45,000 in cash from the trio. One militant, however managed to escape. Sub-divisional Police Officer (Kanchanpur), Sudip Paul said, "They were involved in incidents of extortion and attacks on civilians in Mizoram, Barak Valley districts of Assam and North Tripura. They are also in league with the banned NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura). We have recovered incriminating documents, letters and extortion notices from them".

  • October 30: SFs arrested two militants belonging to NLFT at Kanchanpur in North Tripura District. The duo, identified as Pusparam Reang and Monojit Reang, were arrested from an area bordering Mizoram while they were in a transaction involving huge cash for their Bangladesh hideouts. Pusparam Reang, an over-ground collaborator of NLFT cadres, came to Kanchanpur from a Mizoram village to pay INR 200,000 to Monojit Reang.

  • October 17: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the NLFT is in the process of making fresh recruitments."Dhanu Kalai, a surrendered NLFT militant who was arrested with a huge amount of cash, had confessed before the court that NLFT was in the process of making fresh recruitments and were accumulating money to buy explosives to create disturbance," Sarkar said.

  • October 11: The Security Agencies are apprehensive that the militant groups of the North East may try to re-establish bases in Bangladesh if a Government, which is not very friendly to India, assumes office after 2013 elections in that country.Highly placed security sources told the newspaper that despite crackdown launched by the Sheikh Hasina Government, some militant groups of the North East still have their bases in that country, but most of the bases are in Bangladesh-Myanmar areas.

  • September 16: A hardcore militant of the NLFT identified as Jatendra Reang surrendered to the Security Forces of Kanchanpur in Tripura with arms. He deposited a Chinese grenade, one Improvised Grenade during surrender.

  • September 15: A top NLFT militant, identified as 'sergeant' Bipul Debbarma, surrendered before BSF in the western border of the State. The militant surrendered an AK 56 rifle, a magazine, 25 live ammunition and Bangladeshi currency. Bipul had joined the outfit in 2003 and undergone weapons training in 2004. He was also involved in many operations against Security Forces and abduction of six officials of a construction company from a bordering area of Mizoram in March 2012.

  • September 8: Security Forces arrested two hardcore NLFT militants, Jagalal Tripura, (26), and Maharaj Chakma, (32), from Kanchanpur market in North Tripura District.

  • September 7: NLFT militants fired at a jhumia (Shifting Cultivator), Padmamohan Tripura, in the jungles of Ganganagar in North Tripura District, for refusing to pay "tax" to the outfit.

  • September 6: A division bench of Gauhati High Court upheld the death sentence to prime accused of Jarulbachi massacre, NLFT militant, Ashok Debbarma alias Achak. The massacre occurred during the night of February 11, 1997, when NLFT militants stormed into Jarulbachi village and sprayed indiscriminate firing at villagers. Thirteen villagers including children and old-aged were killed in the attack while six more were injured in the attack. The militants also set ablaze around 50 dwelling huts.

  • United Front formed by northeastern militants in Myanmar and resurgence of their activities in Bangladesh was on the agenda of a three-day annual DGP Conference that began in New Delhi.

  • September 5: SFs arrested two hardcore militants belonging to the NLFT from a remote tribal village of Soigarpur in North Tripura District.

  • August 15: CM Manik Sarkar warned Tripura's resurgent insurgency of imminent action unless good sense prevails soon. The CM spoke in a terse tone that few militant cadres have feigned false surrender and have gone back to the jungles taking advantage of all benefits allowed by the government. This is very akin to treachery with the trust and goodwill of the state government, said Sarkar.
  • August 11: Major militant formations operating in the Northeast called for a general strike on August 15 to boycott Independence Day celebration. However, during the strike, essential services, emergency measures, media and religious activities will be exempted. The militant formations that has called for a general strike, include CorCom of seven rebel organizations HNLC, KLO, NDFB, NLFT and ULFA-ATF.

  • July 28: SFs arrested second-in-command of NLFT-BM, Sabir Debbarma, from Dhalai District. "Debbarma was arrested during a combing operation at Raishyabari by TSR but his identity was revealed to the police during an interrogation yesterday," Inspector General of Police Nepal Das said. He was remanded to police custody by a local court of Kamalpur subdivision, he said. "Debbarma is the second-in-command of NLFT (BM) group," Das told.

  • July 23: In a fierce gun battle that lasted for 30 minutes, one NLFT militant was killed at Majimonipur, 15 kilometres from Raishyabari Police station in Dhalai District, Police confirmed. Acting on a tip-off about presence of a group of NLFT militants headed by Bikaram Bahadur Jamatia alias Bhamtom in the jhum hut, a strong contingent of TSR led by Subedar Bankim Debbarma launched special operation. BSF has intensified their vigil along the border immediately after the incident.

    Tripura Government has finalised a new strategy for combating insurgency in the run-up to the 2013 Assembly poll. A meeting of the state-level co-ordination committee was held in the State secretariat which discussed reports received from intelligence sources on the movement of NLFT militants. The meeting also discussed the July 22 encounter between TSR and NLFT.

  • July 15: A militant belonging to Biswamohan faction of NLFT-BM, identified as, 'commander' Barnajay Tripura, 32, surrendered to the special branch (intelligence wing) of the State Police in an unspecified date.

  • July 3: Three top leaders of the NLFT- Kashirai Reang, Debadanta Reang and Brikhu Reang - surrendered their arms to the Assam Rifles at Khedachara in North Tripura District. The militants surrendered an AK-56 rifle and some China-made arms and ammunition. "The Bangladesh security forces flushed out the insurgents from their camps in Chittagong Hill tracks (CHT) of that country. They crossed over to Tripura before surrendering," a police official said.

  • June 29: Biswamohan Debbarma, the 'chairman' of NLFT-BM is virtually on the run. Especially after the arrest of Utpal Debbarma, 'Foreign Secretary' of the outfit and surrender of two top-ranking rebel leaders - Tipu Debbarma alias Titus and Salgora Debbarma. Biswamohan went to Myanmar after arrest of Utpal to have dialogue with ULFA and NSCN-K leaders for allowing him to establish a permanent base there. Further, both ULFA and NSCN-K leaders have reportedly agreed on providing space to the NLFT-BM for setting up base in Myanmar but on conditions, which include cadre strength, money, arms and ammunition. However, Biswamohan reportedly could not meet the conditions even eight month after the meeting with ULFA and NSCN-K. He, therefore, was not allowed to set up base in Myanmar. The NLFT-BM leader reportedly is e living in Dhaka but keeps changing his 'house' frequently to elude security agencies.

  • June 24: The two arrested NLFT-BM militants- Dhanu Koloi and Bishu Koloi, confessed that though NLFT-BM has a five-storied hideout at Chittagong in Bangladesh, NLFT-BM 'Chairman' Biswamohan and his some special associates do not live there, They live in a border village of Myanmar revealed State Government advocates Tapan Saha and Raghunath Mukherjee, reports Shillong Times. The duo also confessed that they received TNT, high explosive material and detonators from NLFT-BM head and received them at Achlongcherra, a border village of Bangladesh (just opposite of Silacherri). The explosives keep in a rented house at Krishnanagar or Abhoynagar before going for serial blasts either before Durga Puja or prior to the 2013 Assembly election. The duo had also received 10 trucks of FICN to distribute in tribal dominated areas and they did not job at 10 percent commission.

  • June 22: Maoists have reportedly extended a helping hand to NLFT for expanding the latter's area of operation in the State, intelligence sources claimed. Quoting the statement of five surrendered NLFT militants - Dhanu Koloi, Bishu Koloi, Rathashri Koloi, Asitu Mog and Dalphin Koloi - who had been arrested on June 16, for allegedly working for the outfit, Police said Maoists have opened a new front in Tripura. Besides NSCN-K and PLA of Manipur, NLFT has made an alliance with the Maoists to restart extremism in the State, they said. According to their confession, as many as 29 tribal youths had been sent to Myanmar to undertake arms training in Maoist camps in November 2011. "All of them were from the Mandai area on the outskirts of Agartala and they have been approached by a group of surrendered NLFT militants, who are staying in government accommodation, and are drawing monthly remuneration under rehabilitation scheme," said Police.

  • June 20: NLFT-BM is recruiting youths in the State in the run-up to the State assembly elections due next February (2013). A statement from the State Police Headquarters said, "It has been revealed that NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) extremists are engaged in fresh recruitment of innocent tribal youths from the interior areas." "The guerrillas are also trying to extort money from different agencies with the help of a section of surrendered extremists and their sympathizers," the statement added. Police appealed to the citizens not to be lured to join the militant outfits [reference to NLFT].

  • June 18: Following inputs from the three arrested NLFT-BM militants, Tripura Police conducted searches in 10 locations across the State in the past 24 hours. Sources said during a search in the houses of arrested militants, who have been provided Government accommodation under rehabilitation package following their surrender in 2004, Police in Agartala had seized some incriminating documents belonging to the outfit. The seizure also included a letter addressed to NLFT-BM 'Chairman' Biswamohan Debbarma in Kokborok dialect.

  • The news report states that NLFT-BM has recently recruited some 70 freshers in the outfit, who are now undergoing arms training in Myanmar and Bangladesh. In addition, Biswamohan keeps shifting his base between Bangladesh and sometimes in Aizwal (Mizoram) and the surrendered people were actively associated with NLFT-BM network, taking advantage of the rehabilitation package. According to the report, NLFT-BM has been suffering from shortage of funds for the past one year and they could not even pay arms rent to NSCN-K. As a result, the NLFT-BM wanted some money to procure arms and repay the rent.

  • June 17: SFs arrested three NLFT-BM collaborator and surrendered extremists including a woman from Jirania in West Tripura District with some incriminating documents, extortion notes and cash amount of INR 2.5 million. Three NLFT-BM collaborators were identified as Dhani Koloi (39) alias Dangar, Bishnu Koloi (35) alias Biscuit and Ratasree Koloi (29) alias Pakti. The trio was to handover the cash to NLFT-BM militants. Police personal stated that the trio collected the cash amount from an unidentified youth near Lake Choumohani in Agartala. During the operation Police also recovered one pen drive and some counter foils of notices served to five travel agencies for giving them subscription. The arrested ultras also revealed that the money was meant for buying arms and training the newly recruited militants

  • May 29: Following pressure from Bangladeshi Security Forces, NLFT released three tribal farmers at Bhagirath Para in Dhalai District along the India-Bangladesh border. NLFT had abducted the three farmers on May 7.

  • May 13: A surrendered militant belonging to NLFT, who tried to extort money, was lynched by a mob at Behalabari in Khowai District. The militant, identified as Prabir Debbarma, was lynched when he assaulted a person who refused to pay up.

  • NLFT militants in the State might increase their activity on the run up to the next Assembly elections, slated tentatively for February 2013. The news report states that NLFT militants had abducted 32 indigenous people, mostly farmers, at gunpoint from remote areas under Raisyabari and Damcherra Police Stations. While 24 of them returned home safely, the remaining eight reportedly died in rebel custody. The News report quoting a source from the Special Branch (intelligence wing) of State Police said the outfit had always stepped up activities in the run-up to Assembly polls since 1983 and the current year "should be no exception". "They have become weak over the past nine years and cannot do much to disrupt the polls. Given a chance, they may even surrender. What they want is political concession as given earlier to TNV in 1988, but the Left Front will never give any such thing to the rebels," the source said. The source further said that Tripura State Rifles camps were still in place in strategic areas to prevent movement of militants within the state from bordering areas and these camps would be further strengthened.

  • May 7: The NLFT-BM abducted five Jhumias (shifting cultivators) from Bhagirath Para village under Raisyabari Police Station in Dhalai District. They released one person later before entering Bangladesh with a note demanding INR 200,000 as "tax" from Bhagirath Para village and INR 70,000 as ransom for the release of the four abducted persons. One Subodh Reang led NLFT-BM militants. Earlier reports suggested abduction of four Jhumias and subsequent release of one of them. Further, the demand note said, "Unless the money is paid within a week, the bodies of the hostages will be sent back to the village".

  • April 30: Six employees of an Assam-based construction company, ABCI, kept in captivity inside Bangladesh for more than a month by NLFT militants have been released, Police said. They said the NLFT cadres released the employees near a BSF border outpost at Rajiv Nagar in Tupuibari in Mamit District on April 30. The reason for letting them go unharmed was not known. Aizawl District SP Lalbiakthanga Khiangte said that there has been no communication from the ABCI on how the hostages were released by the insurgents. Sources said that the NLFT cadres had demanded INR 10.2 million as ransom for their release.

  • The six employees were abducted on March 26 at Mauzam village in south Mizoram's Lunglei District near Mizoram-Bangladesh border.

  • April 25: Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said the UMHA had taken up the matter of the abduction of six construction workers from Mizoram by NLFT militants with the Bangladesh Home ministry. Six executives of the Assam-based Anupam Bricks and Concrete Industries (ABCI), undertaking construction of Indo-Bangladesh border fencing, were abducted by armed NLFT militants from their camp near Mauzam village in the Mizoram -Bangladesh border Lunglei District on March 26.

  • April 12: State Government has asked all eight District SPs to strengthen Security in all sensitive locations following intelligence inputs on regrouping of NLFT-BM militants. The report indicated that a huge cache of arms has reached NLFT-BM through NSCN. The report states that the arms consignment with 27 heavy firearms from China had been received by NLFT-BM recently. Further, as many as 27 surrendered militants have reportedly returned to the outfit. According to latest statistics, NLFT-BM has strength of 127 militants.

  • April 2: NLFT operating from Bangladesh were behind the abduction of six executives of the Assam-based ABCI from south Mizoram, the Police said. A senior Police official said they had proof that the NLFT militants operating from Bangladesh were responsible for the abduction. "However, no ransom demand was received by the ABCI or the State Government and the NLFT was yet to claim responsibility for the abduction. An armed group of militants abducted six executives of the ABCI, engaged in construction of Indo-Bangladesh border fencing on March 26.

  • March 24: For last two weeks a group of NLFT militants led by Malindra Tripura (Murai) and Baisjoy Aslong are camping at a crop field in the remote Bhagirath para in Dhalai District. The Jhum huts they take as their shelter are situated next to border pillars number 2275 and 2274. The NLFT militants are camping to collect the share from the wages given to the people under MGNREGA scheme and INR 4,000 per family who got IAY room.

  • February 17: 'vice-president' of NLFT, Subir Debbarma was taken to Dhaka for interrogation.

  • February 16: Bangladesh RAB arrested 'vice-president', identified as Subir Debbarma of NLFT from Khagrachhari District.

  • February 7: Movement of NLFT militants from the interior areas of Gandacherra, Longtarai valley, Kanchanpur and Amarpur Sub-Divisions have been observed recently.

  • January 29: NLFT and ATTF are shifting their bases in Bangladesh closer to the Myanmar border. Further, the HNLC and GNLA, of Meghalaya are shifting their bases in Bangladesh towards the Tripura border.

  • January 22: CorCom of seven militant outfits of Manipur have joined hands with five other Militant groups of the Northeastern and called for a mass boycott of Republic Day celebrations on January 26 in the entire northeast. Five other outfits include the ULFA-ATF, HNLC, KLO, NLFT and ATTF.

  • January 20: SFs arrested three militants belonging to NLFT from Gobindabari, in Dhalai District.

2011

  • December 3: The Centre is thinking of the withdrawal of the ban on two militant outfits of the State namely the ATTF and NLFT, in view of the decline in insurgent activities in the State. Sources said the Centre had recently constituted a tribunal headed by sitting Delhi High Court judge Bipin Sanghi to go into the issue and make suggestions. The tribunal had subsequently sent questionnaires to state governments and security agencies seeking their views on the issue.

  • December 1: Nine tribal villagers abducted by NLFT militants returned unhurt from militants Bangladesh's hideout after 136 days from the militants' captivity. The tribals were abducted on July 18 from Debendra Karbari Para under Chawmanu Police Station of Dhalai District.

  • November 10: Suspected NLFT militants opened fire on TSR troopers at the Mohan BOP along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Kanchanpur-Longtarai Valley border in North Tripura District. So far, no casualties have been reported in the firing or recovery of arms.

  • November 2: Ten militants belonging to NLFT, including a woman cadre, surrendered before the Assam Rifles in North Tripura District. The surrendered militants deposited two grenades, two detonators, and some documents. During interrogation, they stated that factionalism in the insurgent outfit, non-payment and scarcity of food led them to take the step.

  • October 20: A Police report said that 74 people, mostly tribals, were abducted by NLFT and ATTF militants this year in Tripura, as against 114 and 121 people in 2010 and 2009 respectively.

  • Union Home Ministry said that terrorist outfits NLFT, ATTF, ULFA, NDFB and Meitei extremist outfits of Manipur continue to have close links between themselves to carry out subversive activities.

  • October 14: October 14: An unofficial report said that the ATTF HQ located at Satcherri in Bangladesh had recently fallen to NLFT following most of the remaining ATTF militants joining hands with their rival-NLFT. In this regard, unofficial sources said, "The process began last year when ATTF suffered a vertical split with Sachindra Debbarma launching a coup against the president Ranjit Debbarma. Both the ATTF and NLFT were already suffering severe financial crisis and loss of manpower and hold following steady and continuous surrenders of top leaders and lower level cadres with arms".

  • October 12: SFs arrested one suspected NLFT militant identified as Parimal Chakma following a brief encounter with a group of three NLFT militants at remote Bholanath Para under Natunbazaar Police Station in South Tripura District.

  • October 5: NLFT militants abducted a minor girl, identified as Chiranjoy Tripura (5), from remote Sarada Roaja Para under Raishyabari Police Station of Dhalai District. According to report, the kidnapping was reportedly carried out after the extortion money demanded by NLFT had not been paid by the villagers.

  • September 29: During the biannual conference of BSF and BGB held in Dhaka from September 25 to 30, the BSF handed over a fresh list of Indian insurgents hiding in Bangladesh to the BGB and demanded action against them even as the latter ruled out presence of rebels in Bangladesh. BSF Director-General Raman Srivastava on September 30 said, "BSF has furnished a fresh list of camps and hideouts of Indian insurgents hiding in Bangladesh soil like NLFT, ULFA, ATTF, NSCN-IM, NDFB, HNLC, PLA, and UNLF."

  • September 25: DGP K Saleem Ali said the insurgency is still a major challenge when it comes to internal security in Tripura though it suffered a lot during the past few years. DGP further said that ATTF, one of the frontline insurgent groups is on the brink of collapse as its archrival NLFT had snatched away almost all weapons, according to intelligence inputs and the morale of NLFT is also very low as its cadre strength has scaled down to 100-120. However, the DGP warned that they (NLFT) are desperately trying to boost the strength by recruiting new guys during the winter keeping in mind of the next Assembly election slated for 2013. Saleem Ali further said, "We have credential inputs about the existence of around 20 hideouts in Bangladesh in spite of their efforts to flush out insurgents holed up in their soil. There are reports of procuring Bangladesh ration cards by some rebel leaders and staying there with their families".

  • September 14: DNARSF declared that it will start a 48 hour long hunger strike from September 16 in front of the Civil Secretariat in Agartala. DNARSF alleges that a section of surrendered militants belonging to ATTF and NLFT had not been accepted as returnees by the State Government and they did not get any assistance to restore normal life.

  • September 8: Increase in extortion and abduction activity by the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) has forced Tripura Government to extended for another six months the operation of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). Tripura has 70 Police Stations, out of which 34 have the AFSPA in full force while AFSPA have been imposed partially in six of them.

  • September 5 : NLFT kidnapped two persons from Jatindra Roajapara in Dhalai District. Police said the extremists had issued extortion notices to the villagers a few days ago. The victims were identified as Birkumar Reang (27) and Pranay Tripura (12).

  • September 2: Five villagers abducted by NLFT militants in June from the remote Rambhadra para village under Natun Bazar Police Station in South Tripura District were released, after they paid ransom to the militants. The freed villagers are Kulendra Reang, (41), Paranjay Reang, (38), Bipadjay Reang, (35), Khagendra Reang, (47) and Nagda Reang (39).

  • August 19: The merger between NLFT and ATTF for united arms struggle has been virtually derailed, revealed Utpal Debbarma, 'foreign secretary' of NLFT-BM. He further revealed that the NLFT still has a strong base in Bangladesh with five to seven hideouts operating and most of the NLFT leaders still live in Bangladesh along with their families but the outfit holds important meeting in Myanmar instead of Bangladesh while NLFT has no hideout in Myanmar. He said that he used to receive money from different construction agencies engaged in erection of barbed wire fencing, border road and development works in interior areas.

  • August 11: The Tripura administration has alerted the Security Forces with the information of fresh recruitment in NLFT and passing out of its new batch. Quoting intelligence report, State Home Department officials on August 11 said that as many as 15 surrendered NLFT militants had returned to the outfit in the past one month from Khowai, Longtarai Valley and Kanchanpur Subdivisions in the state.

  • Also, the report stated that about 300 militants including about 25 women of the NLFT had been undergoing training in Sajek hills and Tawolakantai of Bangladesh and Shan province of Myanmar. The report further indicated that the militant outfit had recently procured 350 sophisticated Chinese weapons.

    Police averted a sabotage attempt ahead of Independence Day when they engaged a group of NLFT militants in an encounter near Khagendra Roaja Para of Ambassa sub-division in Dhalai District. According to Police sources, a group of about 9-10 NLFT militants led by Athara Babu Halam were planning to plant explosives on National Highway 44 when a Police team raided the area.

  • July 28: Two NLFT militants surrendered with one AK-47 rifle and 36 rounds of live cartridges at Agartala, reports Sentinel. The militants were identified as Amulya Debbarma (18) and Barnamohan Tripura (23).

  • July 26: Director General of Police (DGP) K Saleem Ali said that State Administration has decided to install adequate number of security posts with all equipments along the unfenced border in eastern part of the state, reports Sentinel. The decision was taken after 53 families in Chawmanu area of North Tripura left the hamlets following abduction of eight poor tribals by militants of Biswamohan faction of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT-BM) on July 19.

  • July 23: Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Tripura Police quoting from the confessional statement of 'external affairs chief' of NLFT-BM Utpal Debbarma, said that the north-eastern militant organisations had recently floated United Front under NSCN-K to carry out terror operation across the region, reports Shillong Times. United Front had been getting direct patronage of ISI and ISI representatives have attended their meeting and assured them to extend support to carry out insurgency in northeast. Utpal Debbarma further revealed that at present the militants have a stock of series of AK 56 rifles, 32000 live cartage, 15 LMG, 30 MMG and one air crack gun.

  • NLFT-BM militants have taken the eight tribal villagers to Bangladesh, who were abducted from North Tripura last week, reports Nagaland Post. Deputy Inspector General Nepal Das on July 24 said "According to a report from police in Chawmanu areas under Dhalai District, the militants took them to adjoining Bangladesh to avoid Indian security forces' crackdown". He further said: "Following the Tripura government's requests, BSF officers held a meeting with their Bangladeshi counterparts, Border Guard Bangladesh, and requested them to locate the Indians, abducted by the militants."

  • July 20: NLFT-BM abducted eight villagers, namely Arun Chakma (35), Ganja Chakma (45), Sudhyajoy Chakma (35) Ratanjoy Chakma (27) Baisakh chakma (30), Sumanta Chakma (30), Kahindra Tripura (35) and Fallenjoy Tripura (25), at Debendra Karbari Para under Chawmanu Police Station in Dhalai District. Two persons suffered injuries due to assault by the militants.

  • July 19: NLFT-BM sent a ransom notice of INR 1 million to East Chawmanu village council Chief (Dhalai District) Shanti Ranjan Chakma for the release of eight tribal villagers, including two CPI-M leaders Arun Chakma (35) and Ganja Chakma (45), abducted by the group.

  • July 12: SFs arrested 'foreign secretary' Utpal Debbarma (34), of Biswamohan Debbarma faction of NLFT from Aizawl.

  • July 9: Setting aside all differences, the outlawed ATTF has merged with another banned outfit al NLFT.

  • The ATTF suffered a vertical split recently over leadership issue after a major group openly opposed Ranjit Debbarma, 'president' of the ATTF recently. The feud has reduced the strength of the outfit considerably and Ranjit Debbarma finding no other alternative virtually 'surrendered' to NLFT.

    Meanwhile, Tripura Police claimed that the villagers, who were abducted by the militants from a village in Tripura earlier this month, are presently in Bangladesh, reports Daily India. As reported earlier, a group of heavily armed NLFT militants abducted six people, including a government employee on July 1.

  • July 1: Suspected militants of NLFT abducted six civilians, including a former ATTF militant Kulendra Reang (55), from Ujanbari Reang Para under Nutun Bazar Police Station, South Tripura District.

  • June 29: five militants of NLFT including one 'sergeant' and another 'lance corporal' surrendered to SFs at Kanchanpur in North Tripura District on June 29 and deposited two carbines and seven live cartridges. The militants were identified as Kantamani Tripura, Hiranmani Debbarma, Parbaram Reang, Nalenjoy Reang and Gangamani Tripura.

  • June 25: Tripura Government has decided to move the Supreme Court to challenge the verdict of a division bench of Gauhati High Court, which acquitted all the 19 accused, including the three sentenced to life term by the district and sessions court, in the March 1998 assassination of former health minister Bimal Sinha. He was assassinated along with his youngest brother Bidyut on March 31, 1998 by NLFT militants when he went to negotiate release of their abducted adopted brother Bikram Sinha.

  • June 23: Agartala Bench of the Guwahati High Court (HC) set free the three prime accused in the murder case of the then Health Minister Bimal Sinha and his brother. The HC has, however, upheld the decision of the lower court with regard to 16 others, accused in forging conspiracy in the killing, who were released by the District Court in 2005. Earlier, the accused were awarded life imprisonment by a lower court. The then Health and Urban Development Minister Bimal Sinha and his younger brother Bidyut Sinha were shot dead by the NLFT militants on March 31, 2005.

  • June 8: Militants of the NLFT abducted eight tribal villagers from Kalyan Singh village in Dhalai District. The militants later released three of the captives.

  • May 17: Nine NLFT militants surrendered to Assam Rifles at Anandaharipara in Dhalai District. Militants deposited 1463 'Bangladeshi taka', five khukris (knives), receipts for collection of subscriptions, six torches and many documents.

  • April 28: Tripura Government declared that all the promises offered at the time of signing a tripartite peace accord with NLFT-NB on December 17, 2004 were fulfilled. The announcement came after holding a review meeting with the former rebel leaders of NLFT-NB in the presence of Tribal Welfare Minister Aghore Debbarma. All the schemes undertaken as part of the tripartite peace accord were reviewed threadbare in the presence of officials from Tribal Welfare department and DGP K Saleem Ali. Bhuchuk Borok, vice president of the NLFT-NB who remained present in the review meeting, praised the Ministry of Home Affairs and State Government for being sincere in fulfilling the peace accord promises.

  • March 3: BSF DG Raman Srivastava said that BSF gave BDR a list of camps of Indian militant outfits operating in North East and will discuss the issue of presence of the militant leaders of these groups there. He said that we gave them the list of Indian militant outfit camps, including ATTF and NLFT and the names of militant leaders who are still using the soil of the Bangladesh.

  • February 17: A splinter group of ATTF headed by Sachin Debberma has ‘reportedly’ joined hands with its arch rival NLFT. Sources confirmed that ATTF suffered a vertical split over sharing of funds leading to exit of self-styled militant leader Sachin Debbarma from the outfit about one-and-half month ago. According to latest intelligence inputs, a group of 14-15 hardcore cadres of ATTF headed by Sachin Debbarma merged with NLFT to carry on the subversive activities in Tripura.

  • February 2: The NLFT got reinforced with inclusion of a large section of dissented cadres of the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF). Sachin Debbarma, ‘self-styled home minister’ of the outfit is known to have joined NLFT with a bunch of followers following a massive tussle with ATTF supremo Ranjit Debbarma. The entire squad is presently stationed at Khagrachari camp of NLFT, said sources.

  • January 31: NLFT militants shot dead an official of National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC), identified as C N Muni, and injured his driver at a remote tribal hamlet near the Indo-Bangladesh border in North Tripura District. C N Muni was in-charge of Shewapara border fencing site.

  • January 30: A heavily armed team of NLFT militants reportedly sneaked inside Indian Territory. The team led by ‘self styled leader’ Bumthung Halam comprising of 17-18 cadres armed with sophisticated weaponry is reportedly targeting to hold widespread massacres ahead of the ensuing Village Committee polls.

2010

  • December 11: According to Tripura Police, out of the 11 civilians who were abducted by the militants of NLFT on December 7, nine have been taken to Bangladesh and two have been released, Police said. "The NLFT rebels have taken away the hostages to the neighbouring Chittagong Hill Tracts of South-East Bangladesh as there is no fencing in certain portion of India-Bangladesh border of that area," Tripura Director General of Police K. Saleem Ali told. "All necessary steps have been taken to release them," said the DGP. India’s BSF has sought help of the BDR to rescue the captives.

  • December 8: Militants belonging to the NLFT abducted 11 labourers from a bridge construction site in an interior area of Dhalai District bordering Bangladesh. According to Police sources, "The NLFT rebels might have taken the captives into neighbouring Bangladesh territory as the India-Bangladesh border is just four kilometers from the spot." Two of the abducted workers were later released by the militants later in the night.

  • October 12: Six NLFT cadres surrendered to the Assam Rifles in West District, Police said. Three NLFT cadres surrendered before 34th Battalion of Assam Rifles at Raimapara, while three others laid down arms to the 38th Battalion at Teliamura. However, the cadres did not deposit any arm or ammunition during the surrender, the Police added.

  • September 29 Tripura Government extended for another six months the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), citing militant activities along the border with Bangladesh. "In some areas of the state bordering Bangladesh, the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) are active," an unnamed official said. Of the 64 Police Stations in Tripura, the AFSPA is in force in 34 Police Stations and partially in six since 1997.

  • September 17: Police sources reports that one amongst three tribal villagers who were abducted by the NLFT militants from Desharaipara in Dhalai District on September 14 was released.

  • September 14: Three youths were abducted by the NLFT militants from Dashaharpara village under Raisyabari Police Station in Dhalai District. The youths, who were abducted, are believed to have been taken to the outfit’s hideout in Miyani reserve forest in adjacent Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. Sources said the militants, under the leadership of ‘self-styled corporal’ Pramod Koloi, had slapped a "tax" notice of INR 10000 on farmer Hemendra Tripura on September 12 but he could not pay the amount. The militants also beat up Tripura’s wife, Shaibolini (59), and her two brothers, Kantajay (45), and Gopaljay (47).

    A Police source said a 15-member group of the NLFT, had earlier abducted five youths from Boalkhali village in Dhalai District on August 29. Three of them were freed last week after their families paid an unspecified amount of ransom. The other two continue to be held hostage by the outfit. The outfit is trying hard to revive its terror network, he added.

  • September 12: One NLFT militant, identified as Khajamani Reang (35), surrendered before the Police in Kanchanpur of North District without any arms.

  • September 11: Three NLFT militants were arrested by the BSF from North District along India-Bangladesh border. They were identified as Govinda Reang (25), Diyaram Reang (22) and Bhagya Mohan Tripura. One dagger and BDT 910 were recovered from their possession. The militants said that they fled from Bangladesh base camps.

  • September 4: Two NLFT militants, identified as Sajyaram Reang and Biomoni Reang, surrendered before Assam Rifles at Damcherra, Police said. The militants deposited some live cartridges and a grenade during their surrender, Police said. So far, 100 militants of different outfits have surrendered in 2010 due to crackdown by the Security Forces in neighbouring Bangladesh, where they have their camps, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Police Control, Nepal Das said.

  • September 3: The Bangladesh Army recently destroyed three camps of the NLFT in Khagracherri District of Bangladesh.

  • August 31: NLFT militants sent a demand note to the village chief on August 31. Reportedly, the militants were asking for INR 1000 a year from each of the 250 families of the village. Five Villagers were abducted from Shukraichari area under Gandacherra sub-division of Dhalai District on August 30.

  • August 30: The NLFT has abducted five tribal Villagers from remote Shukraichari area under Gandacherra sub-division of Dhalai District.

  • August 29: The HNLC maintains an on-and-off relationship with the NSCN-IM, NDFB and NLFT, according to the ADGP (Meghalaya) who also said the outfit's nexus with ULFA is not yet ascertained. At present, the HNLC has around 50 active cadres, but each one of them does not have arms and ammunitions. "The figure might not be accurate as it is based on our assessment on sightings and technical intercepts," Jain said. The outfit has its camps at Maulvi Bazar, Sylhet and Chittagong Hill Tract of Bangladesh. Many of its leaders are into betel nut plantations and own stone quarries in the neighbouring country.

  • August 20: Three cadres of NLFT surrendered before Assam Rifles in West District. One NLFT cadre, Rajendra Reang, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Teliamura and deposited one radio set. Two other cadres of the same outfit - Raju Sangma and Dilip Debbarma- surrendered at Jirania without arms.

  • August 11: Sangai Express reports that the KLO, Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), NDFB, NLFT, Tripura Peoples' Democratic Front (TPDF) and the ULFA called for a general shut down, and asked people in the Northeast region to boycott the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

  • 16 NLFT cadres deserted their camps in Bangladesh and surrendered before troopers in Tripura, Police said. "The NLFT (National Liberation Front of Tripura) extremists, led by their self-styled captain Kishore Debbarma and self-styled sergeant Raimohan Tripura, crossed over to India early on Tuesday," a Police spokesman told reporters. "They established contact with the BSF (Border Security Force) and Assam Rifles officials at Manikpur in Dhalai district and at Kanchanpur in North Tripura district," he said.

    "The Bangladesh-trained tribal guerrillas also surrendered a huge cache of sophisticated arms, ammunition and explosives to the officials of the BSF and the Assam Rifles at separate functions in northern Tripura late on Tuesday," he added further. According to Police, the militants have fled from their base and training camps at Sajek area under Chittagong hill tracts of southeast Bangladesh.

  • August 8: Two militants of NLFT surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Kanchanpur in North District, Police said. The duo - Dahan Chandra Reang and Purnaram Reang - surrendered before the 38th battalion of Assam Rifles. They deposited one rifle, two gelatine sticks and two detonators.

  • August 6: Two BSF troopers were killed in an IED blast when militants waylaid a group of troopers in remote Ratia under Chawmanu Police Station of Dhalai District. N.C. Das, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police operations, said that suspected militants belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT were involved in the ambush. This was the first major militancy related incident in Tripura in 2010.

  • July 30: Two militants of the NLFT surrendered before Police the in North District after escaping from the NLFT's base camp in Chittagong Hill Tract in Bangladesh, Police sources said on July 31. They were identified as Falgunjoy Tripura and Parjoy Tripura. They surrendered before the officer-in-charge of Kanchanpur in North District. The duo did not deposit any arm or ammunition while surrendering, sources added.

  • July 21: Four hardcore NLFT militants surrendered before Security Forces in the State in past two days, Police said. According to report, Mintu Rupini of Jirania, surrendered before Assam Rifles (AR) and deposited one 9-mm locally made revolver and ammunition of SLR. Meanwhile, three other NLFT militants, identified as Jatendra Tripura (25), Dasharath Reang (21) and Dakhin Kr Tripura (35), surrendered before the same forces in Dhalai District. They deposited eight .303 ammunition, four 12 bore cartridges and one Bayonet of .303 rifle.

  • July 10: Six NLFT militants surrendered before Assam Rifles in West District, Police said. They fled from their base camps in neighbouring Bangladesh on July 8 surrendered to the camp in-charge of the Assam Rifles at Teliamura and also deposited two 9 mm pistols and some live cartridges. With this, altogether 36 militants have surrendered within the last 18 days, Police said.

  • July 6: Three NLFT militants identified as Sachin Reang, Kumendra Reang, Raibahadur Reang surrendered at Kariyabari camp of Assam Rifles in West District and deposited one locally made gun with eleven cartridges.

  • July 5: Four NLFT militants identified as Padmamohan Tripura, Birsajoy Tripura, Smaranjoy Tripura and Khaitarung Reang surrendered at Oakhirampara in Dhalai.

  • June 30: Three NLFT militants surrendered before the Assam Rifles in West District, Police said. The surrendered militants were identified as Manmohan Tripura (26), Sakhula Reang (28) and Ramlal Khui Halam. They were accused of abductions and killings. They deposited one 9-mm pistol with one magazine, one locally made gun with two cartridges and nine rounds of AK-series.

  • June 27: A self-styled 'lance corporal' of the NLFT, Dhirjoy Reang alias Dakdak, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Pandabpara in Dhalai District, Police said.

  • June 24: The 10 NLFT militants escaped from their camps in different places of Bangladesh and crossed over to India and surrendered before the BSF and Assam Rifles troopers in different places of Tripura, a Police spokesman said. "The tribal guerrillas during interrogation told the police and para-military troopers that they fled from their base camps in Bangladesh few days back following raids by Bangladesh security forces," the spokesman said, adding that the militants have been facing fund crisis.

    The report adds that with this, since June 21, 16 Bangladeshi trained NLFT cadres have laid down their arms. "During interrogation of the militants, we received vital information about militants from Northeast India taking shelter in the Bangladeshi territory," the Police official told reporters. In 2010, around 60 militants of the NLFT and ATTF outfits left Bangladesh and surrendered to the Indian SFs.

  • June 22: Six NLFT militants surrendered before the BSF at Khasia Mangal in West District. The surrendered militants were recruited in between 2007 and 2009 and most of them have taken part in more than one encounter with Security Forces in Dhalai District. During interrogation, they revealed that the frustration among the lower level of cadres is increasing with every passing day due to difficult living conditions in jungles which is further augmented by the financial hardship faced by them.

  • June 15: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar informed State Legislative Assembly that since May 1993 last to 2010 a total of 7992 armed cadres surrendered from all militants groups active in Tripura. Giving details of militant activities across the State, Sarkar said that militants’ activity has almost come to end. About 175 to 185 cadres of NLFT militants are still underground and 35 to 40 ATTF cadres more are active in militant camps, he mentioned. Chief Minister also said, during the financial year 2009-10, seven NLFT militants and five ATTF cadres were arrested by the Security Forces (SFs) and 225 more cadres from same groups laid down their arms before SFs. In the same period, militants also killed nine persons in 20 militant attacks, he added. Chief Minister also in his written reply said, altogether 21 persons were killed and 59 persons abducted in 113 militants attacks in the year 2007, 10 persons were killed and more 32 civilians were abducted in 80 militant attacks during the year 2008. In the year 2009, nine SFs were killed in an ambush by NLFT cadres at remote bordering Thalcherra road under Dhalai District, stated the Chief Minister. In the same year, militants abducted seven civilians in their registered 24 attacks, said Sarkar.

  • June 6: Sentinel reports that 13 militant organizations from the Northeast States of Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya figure in the list of banned organizations as it appears in the website of the Union Home Ministry (MHA). The ULFA heads the list. The other outfits were: NDFB, People's Liberation Army (PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), People's Revolutionary party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), NLFT, Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) and Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC).

  • May 24: A group of NLFT militants again clashed with TSR personnel at Satraipara under Manikpur Police outpost in Dhalai District. Police sources said the militants tried to sneak into Manikpur village for extorting money but were thwarted by the troopers.

  • May 22: A group of 10 NLFT militants stormed Shermoon village under Kanchanpur sub-division of North District and demanded 20 per cent of wages in advance from 123 National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) workers. However, the militants later left the area after an encounter with troopers of 9th Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR).

    Sources in the special branch (intelligence wing) of State Police said the outfit was finding it hard to mobilise resources because of resistance by the people in all the four Districts. During the past month, NLFT cadres have served ‘tax’ notices on village committee secretaries posted under zonal offices of Autonomous District Council (ADC).

  • May 21: Two hardcore militants of the ATTF and NLFT surrendered before Assam Rifles in two separate places in Tripura. However, NLFT cadre was not identified.

  • May 3: The NDFB was also maintaining close ties with different anti-India groups having bases in Bangladesh. According to an assessment by the SFs, at least a hundred trained cadres of the outfit are still in Assam, while, around 50 cadres must be in Bangladesh. Sources further said that the NDFB launched joint operations with the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) from time to time, but the outfit also maintained close ties with other groups like National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM), United National Liberation Front (UNLF), All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and NLFT etc, as well as with some other anti-India groups in the neighbouring country. Sources revealed that under pressure in Bangladesh, anti-talk faction of the NDFB recently established a camp in Myanmar and is located near a camp of Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).

  • May 2: Four cadres of the HNLC were convicted of arms smuggling and imprisoned for 17 years in Bangladesh, said Additional Director General of Meghalaya Police (Special Branch) S. K. Jain. "Sketchy reports from various networks confirmed that the four convicted Indians in Bangladesh are members of the outlawed HNLC," said Jain. On April 29, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge of Sylhet-I convicted Robin (35), Mill (28), Over (25) and Star (24) - all hailing from Shillong - in a five-year-old case of arms smuggling. All the four, Jain said, were wanted by the Meghalaya Police for their involvement in the biggest bank robbery in Jaintia Hills District on January 24, 2005. On July 15, 2005, Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) troopers arrested the four HNLC militants from Karaballa point under Sylhet District after they entered Bangladesh through Karimganj sector in Assam. The BDR recovered from their possession an AK 56 rifle, three grenades, two 9-mm pistols, 316 bullets and four magazines of AK 56 rifle, 328 bullets and three magazines of 9-mm pistol, INR 3,000 and BDT 2,700. According to the Police official, the HNLC is closely linked to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland- Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and the NLFT.

  • April 30: Director General of Tripura Police Pranay Sahay said that there were reports of NLFT movements prior to Tripura Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections scheduled to be held on May 3. He said, "This time extremist threat during ADC elections is less. Nevertheless, movement of some militants in some vulnerable localities cannot be ruled out altogether." He said that movements of some NLFT militants were reported from rural areas of Kanchanpur, Chhamanu, Langtarai Valley, Manikpur, Ganganagar, Mungiakami and Gandacherra in Dhalai District and Dhalai-South District border.

  • April 20: Six suspected armed militants of the NLFT abducted a person, Sankar Bijoy Chakma of Apanbooli village in Dhalai District.

  • April 11: Two ATTF cadres, who had deserted the outfit's Satcherri camp in Habiganj District of Bangladesh, surrendered before the Jirania Police in West District of Tripura. They confessed that ATTF 'chief' Ranjit Debbarma had visited the training camps of women cadres in Bangladesh and in a speech told them that their job would be not only to fight SFs but lay "honey-traps" for leaders of the rival NLFT. Sources also said that Ranjit Debbarma is trying to strike a deal with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) to buy arms.

  • March 24: Over 1,200 surrendered cadres of the NLFT and ATTF launched a 72-hour hunger protest demonstration in Tripura, asking the Government rehabilitate them. They are seeking immediate economic rehabilitation of all former insurgents. The militants had surrendered to the Tripura Government at different times in the past three years. "We surrendered long back, but the State Government is yet to fulfil its promise to rehabilitate us," said Achai Kashrung Jamatia, leader of the protesting former militants. "If we do not get a specific and positive assurance from the State Government about our rehabilitation within the next 72 hours, we will extend our hunger strike," he added.

    An insurgent of the banned NLFT, Bakul Debbarma (29) had surrendered before Assam Rifles at Kalyanpur in West District and he deposited fifteen bullets of AK-47 rifle.

  • March 13: SFs recovered two locally made guns and ammunitions from two separate locations of South District. A locally made gun, AK-47 ammunition and 19 tax collection receipts of the NLFT were recovered from remote Khambar Para area of South District.

  • February 22: A trooper of paramilitary Tripura State Rifles (TSR) was injured in a gunfight with suspected NLFT militants at Kakuiroajapara in Dhalai District. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Nepal Das said that he was injured when a contingent of TSR jawans during a search operation was fired upon by the militants prompting the forces to retaliate, adding that the ultras managed to flee into thick forests. Tripura Info adds that it is suspected that NLFT militants were responsible for the ambush. There were reports of NLFT militants' movement in hilly region of Dhalai. "In view of forthcoming ADC election the NLFT militants were trying to regroup and recruit new cadres", a Police Officer added.

  • February 21: A NLFT cdare, Bongsida Reang, surrendered before Assam Rifles personnel at Kalibari under Takarjala Police Station in West District. He deposited live cartridges of AK-47 and tax collection receipts during his surrender. The Police said that Reang had deserted the base camp in Bangladesh.

  • February 12: Chief Executive Member of Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Ranjit Debbarma, in Khumlwng of West District said that the demand for formation of a separate State within the tribal council area in the State is separatist and unconstitutional. He said, "The demand raised by a tribal party, Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), is separatist in nature and could not be supported."

  • January 28: Three NLFT militants, identified as Bairaham Mohan Tripura, Santosh Debbarma and Dharmjoy Reang, surrendered before the Assam Riffles at Dolucherra camp in Dhalai District. They deposited one 7.65-mm revolver and many live cartridges.

  • January 24: 12 militants of the NLFT attacked the tribal-dominated Bhagirathpara village in Dhalai and rounded up members of the Gana Mukti Parishad and Tribal Youth Federation, frontal organisations of the Community Party of India - Marxists (CPM) and assaulted them. The militants also issued a "diktat" warning the injured workers against going to Gandacherra sub-divisional town for treatment.

  • January 22: A group of NLFT militants opened fire on the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ratiyapara under Chhawmanu Police Station in Dhalai District. Sources said the BSF personnel were escorting General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) workers engaged in construction of barbed wire fence along India-Bangladesh border in Ratiyapara and Alongcherra when the militants opened fire on them. After the BSF retaliated, the militant stopped firing for a while, but within half an hour another group of construction workers and BSF personnel came under fire from across the border at Alongcherra.

  • January 3: Four NLFT cadres surrendered when they were challenged by the Assam Rifles personnel at Taidum village in North District along Tripura–Mizoram border. Sources said that they deposited one AK 56 rifle, one SLR, a pistol, one G-3 gun along with ammunitions and 340 bullets during the time of surrender.

2009

  • December 27: Two NLFT cadres surrender along with arms before the BSF at Khasiamangal in North District. They are identified as Tatin Mohan Tripura (30) and Bazimohan Tripura (26). They deposit two Chinese grenades, one Dager and some subscription pad of the Bishwamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT during the time of their surrender. They confess in interrogation that they had joined in the NLFT in 2000 and they were involved in several crimes, including killing and abduction, when insurgency was in peak in the State.

  • December 24: At least eight cadres belonging to Bishwamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, including women cadres from Assam, are arrested by a combined force of the Assam Rifles and Tripura Police during a search operation at Hamchapara area under Khedacherra Police Station in the North District. They are identified as Dobe Reang (27), Joy Mohan Reang (23), Swapna Reang (27) and Jamini Reang (25) of Assam, Ratanjoy Reang (24), Ubajoy Reang (20) and Tailoram Reang alias Khabel Thanga (30) of Mizoram. One improvised .22 pistol, one Chinese AK rifle, one Carbine, 10 live rounds of .22 carbine and two mobile sets with some Indian currency are recovered from their possession.

  • December 12: Two NLFT cadres, Subhash Tripura and Romsrai Reang, surrender before the Assam Rifles personnel at Manikpur village in Longterai valley sub-division of Dhalai District. They deposit one revolver, one hand grenade and many live cartridges and one magazine.

    A NLFT cadre, Piyajoy Tripura, surrenders before the Assam Rifles personnel at Dronakumarpara in Dhalai District. He has not deposited any arms or ammunition.

    Militant outfits in the Northeast— the Manipur People’s Liberation Front, NLFT, Tripura People’s Democratic Front, and anti-talk faction of the NDFB —said the people of the region engaged in "liberation struggle" felt "betrayed" by Bangladesh’s handing over of ULFA ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa and other leaders to India.

    The Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, replying to a supplementary question on whether any leader of the NLFT was in custody in Bangladesh, in Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) said, "Thanks to the coordinated effort of the central government and the Tripura government, militant activities have by and large been contained. I don't think there is a threat from the NLFT or any other group." "Whether or not anyone is in custody, I do not know," he added.

  • December 5: The ban on the NLFT and ATTF was extended. The ban on the two outfits was enforced in 1997 at the peak of militancy in the State. The report adds that a notification of the Delhi High Court’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal in this regard was issued recently. The Tribunal comprised G. S. Sistani of Delhi High Court.

  • December 3: The ‘press secretary’ of NLFT Tokyung Pha said that "contrary to reports in a section of the media, the NLFT president had never been detained in Bangladesh". "In fact, he does not live in Bangladesh any more," Pha, said in his statement. Indirectly confirming the NLFT’s ‘press secretary’s statement, Tripura Director-General of Police Pranay Sahay said, "It is not Biswamohan but Biswamoni who was picked up by the Bangladeshi Security Forces from Bandarban area in Chittagong Hill Tracts. We gather that Biswamoni along with another NLFT rebel, Parushuram Tripura who had been picked up a few months ago may be sent back soon."

  • December 2: Two unidentified NLFT militants surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Chhamanu in Dhalai District.

  • November 29: The self-styled ‘Supremo’ of NLFT, Biswamohan Debbarma, was arreted from an elite restaurant in Dhaka by personnel of DGFI. The DGFI has launched a massive crack down against North East militant outfit’s leaders and cadres following request from its Indian counterpart. The movement of two militant leaders – NLFT ‘Supremo’ Biswamohan Debbarma and Ranjit Debbarma, Commander-in-Chief of ATTF was under surveillance by the DGFI for the past few days. The DGFI sources said that both the militant leaders were moving together in different places of Dhaka for the past one week. However, DGFI personnel could manage to catch only Biswamohan.

  • November 20: Two militants of NLFT, identified as Kantamoni Tripura and Kutal Tripura, surrendered before the SDPO, Ambassa, Pran Krishna Das in Dhalai District. They deposited one SLR and 120 rounds of bullets during surrender.

  • November 18: A trooper of the Tripura State Rifles, Samarendra Debbarma (27), was shot dead and a Special Police Officer, Sushil Tripura (24), was wounded in an encounter with a group of NLFT militants at Dhumacherra in the Dhalai District in the morning. A contingent of Tripura State Rifles which was returning from a counter-insurgency operation in the Longterai valley was fired upon by the militants, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Nepal Das, said.

  • November 15: The NLFT claimed responsibility for killing eight Reang tribesmen in Kanchanpur on November 9 but denied any ethnic angle to the incident. In a statement, the NLFT stated that the killing of the family members of the youths involved in the incident was a fall out of the snatching of the INSAS rifle and some cash from one of their cadres. It claimed that the punishment was executed in accordance with their law. "The culprits were served instant notice to return the same for an amicable solution. But when no response came forward, the law took its own course," said the statement, adding that there was no ethnic bias as reported by the media.

  • November 14: The NLFT militants abducted two businessmen, Shanajay Tripura (41) and Laxmi Charan Chakma (39) from Thalcherra market under Dharamanagar subdivision in North Tripura District, at gunpoint in the night. The abducted businessmen were believed to have been taken across the border to the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.

  • November 11: Two of the Reang tribals abducted by the NLFT militants from Kusharambari in Kanchanpur subdivision in the night of November 9 are still missing. As reported earlier, the NLFT militants dragged out 12 Kusharambari villagers to a nearby forest in the midnight and shot dead eight of them. One woman was injured while another returned in the morning. Two tribals, Manikrai Reang (60) and Maitaram Reang (45), are still missing. Police sources in Kanchanpur said the NLFT 'commander' Suron Debbarma (32), who is hiding in a camp in Bangladesh across the border, half-a-kilometre from Kusharambari, had engineered the massacre.

  • November 10: The militants of the NLFT shot dead eight Reang tribals of Kusharambai village in the North District in the night. Police sources said 10 NLFT militants surrendered before the SFs at Shantinagar under Kanchanpur subdivision and Ganganagar under Gandacherra subdivision in the afternoon of same day. The seven self-proclaimed NLFT militant who surrendered at Kanchanpur deposited a sophisticated INSAS rifle and 168 rounds of bullets and two magazines. In Gandacherra, three NLFT militants surrendered and deposited a Chinese hand grenade, bullets of AK-series rifles and "tax" receipts. However, a highly placed Police official in North Tripura said the seven who surrendered in Kanchanpur were not really NLFT militants. "These youths, all residents of Kusharambari village, had somehow overpowered a listed NLFT rebel Sadhan Jamatya (27), who had strayed into their area and seized his INSAS rifle and bullets. Jamatya managed to escape and inform his NLFT colleagues. The retaliatory attack followed at midnight," he said. Ten heavily armed NLFT militants stormed Kusharambai at midnight and rounded up eight tribals, all family members of the seven fake surrenderees, dragged them deep into the jungle near the village and shot them from point blank range. Three of those killed were women. The deceased have been identified as Tularam Reang (55), Sampaiti Reang (48), Bidhanshari Reang (17), Sanjit Reang (22), Rabindra Reang (21), Malirung Reang (50), Tamarung Reang (22), and Pramodrai Reang (55). Pramodrai Reang's wife, Gayalung (55), was injured.

  • November 7: Suspected NLFT militants, hiding across the India-Bangladesh international border, shot dead one farmer, identified as Dilu Telenga, in Chunarghat area of Bangladesh. Police sources said that Dilu Telenga, a resident of Narayanbasti area of Khowai Police Station in West District, had gone over to Bangladesh to tend his cattles. While he was returning home at 2pm (IST), suspected NLFT militants hiding in the area opened fire on him and he died on the spot.

  • Six NLFT militants surrendered along with a cache of arms and ammunitions in two separate incidents in Tripura during the last 24 hours. Four NLFT militants, identified as Bidhanjoy Reang (28), Birendra Reang (24), Parendra Reang (24) and Jitendra Reang (22) of North District had surrendered along with four rounds of 7.62, some Bangladeshi currencies and one NLFT subscription book. During interrogation, they confessed that due to acute shortage of resources coupled with security threat from Bangladesh authority had forced them to flee from the hideout and compelled to surrender. Two NLFT militants, identified as Gounki Reang (19) and Rajesh Reang (20) of Kanchanpur, bordering Mizoram had surrendered before Assam Rifles in remote Chowmanu area and deposited one AK-47 and one AK-56 rifles, two AK magazines and 25 live rounds of AK series.

  • November 1: The NLFT has started a fresh drive to recruit tribal youths to launch a new offensive in the run-up to the Autonomous District Council elections slated for April 2010. Sources in the Special Branch (intelligence wing) of Tripura Police said as the first step towards strengthening the outfit, it had recruited 40 tribal youths and sent them to the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh for training in guerrilla warfare, including the use of arms and explosives. Sources said that in the past one month, 40 tribal youths drawn from poor households in the Sadar, Khowai, Gandacherra, Amarpur and Kanchanpur subdivisions had crossed over to Chittagong Hill Tracts through the hilly and unfenced eastern border of Tripura in six groups. Utpal Debbarma, a tribal unemployed engineer who had passed out of the Tripura Engineering College and joined the NLFT after being persecuted by Police in 2001, was now leading the recruitment drive, sources said. The past few years have witnessed a decline in the militant activity in Tripura following a spate of surrenders, waning support among the indigenous tribals, inability to carry out major offensive and collect "tax" through extortion. On realising that growing marginalisation would cloud its future, the NLFT leadership, still in Bangladesh, has reportedly started the new recruitment drive.

  • October 20: The NLFT served an extortion notice to railway employees in S. K. Para railway station of North District demanding INR 2000 from each of the employees by October 26, 2009.

  • October 9: Two NLFT militants, identified as Dhananjoy Reang and Motaraham Reang, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Hrankhawlpara in Dhalai District. During interrogation, the duo confessed they fled from their camp in the neighbouring Chittagong Hill Tract in Bangladesh as a food and economic crisis gripped the camp inmates due to non-payment by the outfit.

  • September 28: Six villagers were abducted by the NLFT militants when they were going to sell kerosene at Ratannagar village in the Dhalai District. They were identified as Jayantai Bikash Chakma (35), Jyoti Ranajan Chakma (32), Colony Mohan Chakma (35), Shanti Ranjan Chakma (37), Jnama Chandra Chakma (39 and Tanglong Chakma (32). However, three of them, Shanti Ranjan, Jnama Chandra and Tanglong, were subsequently released after giving a ransom of INR 56,000.

  • September 18: Four NLFT militants surrendered before the Assam Rifles in two different incidents in Tripura. Police sources said two militants, identified as Annaram Reang and Ratanjoy Reang, surrendered at Chhamanu area in Dhalai District before the Assam Rifles personnel who were patrolling there. The duo also deposited 500 Bangladeshi currency and some documents.

  • Two NLFT militants, identified as Gouranga Hari Jamatiya, a 'corporal' of the outfit, and Annababu Jamatiya, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Gamaku Bari in South District. The duo deposited a few live cartridges.

  • September 17: Two NLFT militants, identified as Karnajoy Reang (32) and Parajoy Reang, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Mungaikami area of West District.

  • September 14: At least four NLFT militants surrendered in three separate places in the Dhalai District. Sources said that the NLFT militant Birchandra Jamatia (36) of Kalyanpur in West District surrendered before the Deputy Police Superintendent at Raishyabari along with his wife Sampari Debbarma (20) and a three-month-old child. He also deposited some documents of the outfit.

  • Two more NLFT militants, identified as Dhancharai Reang (32) and Jitendra Tripura (30), surrendered before the Assam Rifles personnel in remote Chowmanu and Gandacherra areas under Dhalai District. They deposited ammunition of AK-series rifles, two Chinese grenades and a wireless set. "During the past three years alone nearly 500 NLFT rebels, including the top brass, have laid down arms and the remaining handful of rebels are also on the lookout for ways to leave the camps," Police officials said. Sources said the NLFT militants were facing serious crisis because of large-scale desertion and about 23 camps run by the NLFT in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh had been closed down. With assumption of power by the Sheikh Hasina-led Government in Bangladesh, the Army had launched a drive against the Northeast militants and demolished several camps and issued quit notices.

  • August 19: A combined team of the Police and the Border Security Force recovered a cache of arms and ammunition hidden by the NLFT militants in a hut from the Karangicherra area under Khowai subdivision of the West District, along the India-Bangladesh international border around 2am (IST). The recovered arms include eight AK-66 assault rifles, 23 magazines and 70 rounds of live cartridges. Police sources said interrogation of a number of surrendered militants over the past fortnight by intelligence wing officials of the Tripura Police resulted in this recovery.

  • August 18: Five NLFT militants surrendered before the Assam Rifles officials in three separate incidents. Two unidentified NLFT militants surrendered at Malbasa under Amarpur sub-division in the South District. During interrogation, the duo confessed that they were involved in many extortion-related activities in the South District. They had joined the outfit in 2000 and undergone arms training at Bangladesh camps. In addition, two more NLFT militants, identified as Mukti Sadhan Jamatia (34) and Gokul Nanda Jamatia (29) of South Tripura, also surrendered. However, they did not deposit any arms. They confessed that they were involved in a number of crimes, including killings and kidnappings.

  • August 13: Five NLFT militants were arrested by the Assam Rifles personnel from Khedacherra village, bordering West Mizoram, in North Tripura District. Three pistols, two rifles, ammunition and INR 17,000 in cash were recovered from the possession of the militants.

  • August 3: A NLFT cadre surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Taidu in the South District.

  • June 22: A NLFT militant, Swary Debbarma (36) alias Sukram of Jirania area in capital Agartala, surrendered before the Tripura State Rifles along with one 7.62 SLR Magazine and 25 live rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition.

  • June 16: Three militants of the ATTF and NLFT outfits surrendered before the SF personnel. Police sources said an unidentified NLFT militant surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Kakracharri in West Tripura District and deposited one Chinese grenade and few cartridges of AK series rifles. Another NLFT militant, identified as Siponjoy, surrendered before the Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) at Ratan Nagar in Dhalai District and deposited one locally-made gun and some Bangladeshi currency. In the third surrender, an ATTF militant, identified as Sanjoy, surrendered before the SDPO of Teliamura Sub-Division in West Tripura District.

  • June 4: One NLFT militant, identified as Rajprasad Reang (22) alias Hizack, a resident of Shibdhan Para village under Ganganagar Police Station in Dhalai District, surrendered before the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Ampi, Mayajay Rupani, along with ten live cartridges of AK series rifle. Police sources said Rajprasad was a self-styled 'corporal' of the NLFT.

  • May 21: Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, identified as Sitaram and C. D. Saha, were injured when NLFT militants ambushed a BSF patrol party at Simanapur area, about 78 kilometers from the Kanchanpur Police Station, in North Tripura District along the India-Bangladesh Border.

  • March 12: Replying to questions raised by the opposition Members of Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said, that during the last three years as many as 871 militants belonging to the ATTF, NLFT and BNCT have surrendered. Out of the 871 who surrendered between 2006 and January 2009, only 367 deposited arms and ammunition, he added. The Chief Minister also said that approximately 180 to 200 NLFT and 80 to 90 ATTF militants are still underground. The reduction of militancy could very well be gauged from the fact that while in 2007 there 133 attacks, in 2008 it came down to 80, he added.

  • March 7: Two NLFT militants, identified as Malindra Tripura and Bidhyajoy Reang, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Teliamura in the West District.

  • February 1: Two NLFT militants, Rambabu Reang and Nanturai Reang, were arrested by SF personnel from Balucherra in the Dhalai District. Two locally made guns were recovered from their possession.

  • January 28: Three NLFT militants, including a woman activist, surrendered before the Police at Bhanderima near the Tripura-Mizoram border in the North District. According to Police sources, they were identified as Samendra Reang, Pranab Halam and his wife Jaranika Tripura.

  • January 11: Six NLFT cadres surrendered at the headquarters of Assam Rifles in the State capital Agartala. They deposited one SLR, two rifles and one revolver with live cartridges.

  • January 10: 24 militants, including 22 NLFT cadres and two cadres of the ATTF, surrendered before the Security Forces in West Tripura District after fleeing from their base camps in Bangladesh. While the NLFT militants surrendered to the commandant of 15th battalion of Assam Rifles at Hrangkhalpara, the ATTF cadres surrendered to the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Khowai. Police sources said that a food crisis in the Bangladesh camps and non-payment by the leaders of the militant outfits to the rank and file were the reasons behind the surrender. The NLFT cadres deposited three revolvers, two Chinese grenades, live cartridges and some documents of the outfit. The ATTF militants surrendered a Japanese wireless set.

2008

  • December 15: Two cadres of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the National Liberation Front of Tripura, identified as Ukhil Mani Reang and Mandiram Reang, surrendered before Officer-in-Charge of the Kanchanpur Police Station in North Tripura District.

  • December 12: One NLFT militant, identified as Toksingh Reang of Teliamura sub-division, surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Kakracherra under Mungiakami Police Station in the West Tripura District. He deposited 20 bullets during the time of surrender.

  • December 3: One NLFT militant, identified as Surjyaram Reang, surrendered before Major R.K. Saha of Assam Rifles at Kakracherra of Mungiakami police station in the West Tripura district. He deposited 32 bullets and some incriminating papers of the outfit.

  • December 1: One bullet ridden dead body of an unidentified tribal youth was recovered from the ambush point at Wadukcherra in the Dhalai district, where three BSF personnel and a NPCC supervisor were killed by the NLFT militants on November 29, reports Tripurainfo. The security force personnel also recovered one pair of electric wire measuring about 52 cubits, two pencil batteries (made in Bangladesh), 14 empty cartridges of AK-47 and nine empty cartridges of SLR, one safety lever of China-made hand grenade and two splinters of improvised explosive device near the dead body.

  • November 29: Three BSF personnel and an employee of a construction company were killed when NLFT militants ambushed a patrolling party at Wadukcherra under Manikpur police station in the Dhalai district. Three slain personnel were identified as T. Biju, R.C. Nath and Sonatan Biswas. Another slain person was identified as Monoranjan Sarkar, staff of a construction company. One BSF personnel, Abidur Rahaman, and one worker of the construction company, Uttam Das, were also injured in the attack.

  • November 27: 48 surrendered militants of the ATTF from the Lovstori area under Udaipur subdivision and 41 militants from the NLFT from the Lachi area under Shantir Bazar subdivision were on a fast-unto-death demanding withdrawal of all pending cases against them.

  • November 20: Two NLFT militants surrendered before the joint force of Tripura Police and Assam Rifles at Manu in the Dhalai district along with one AK-56 rifle.

  • November 14: Altogether 43 surrendered cadres of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, who are undergoing vocational training in a camp in South Tripura district, threatened to launch protests unless pending criminal cases against them are withdrawn immediately. In a letter to Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, their leader Milan Kumar Jamatia said unless the cases were withdrawn before November 20, all the vocational trainees would go on a fast-unto death stir. He said that they would start agitation from November 25 if the demands were not fulfilled.

  • November 12: One TRS personnel, Arjun nath was injured in an encounter with NLFT militants NLFT at an interior area of Champahowar police station under West Tripura district.

  • November 6: Two militants of NLFT surrendered before Assam Rifles at Kanchanpur near Mizoram border along with a country-made gun and 24 rounds ammunitions of AK47, SLR and 303 rifles.

  • October 5: The NLFT strongly denied its link with the October 1 serial blasts. In a press release, Uomthai, the spokesperson of the NLFT said that the outfit "condemned the attack and demanded punishment of bringing all culprits". He also denied the outfit’s linkage with any fundamentalist organisation including HuJI.

  • September 30: Two militants of NLFT were arrested by Assam Rifles from Belbari area in the West Tripura district. They were identified as Manoj Debbarma and Dipak Debbarma from Belbari area under Champahor police station.

  • September 27: Assam Rifles personnel arrested four militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT while extorting money from people at Sailut village under Vangmun police station in the North Tripura district. Three country made guns, one grenade and incriminating documents of the out fit were recovered from them.

    Another cadre of the same faction was arrested by the Tripura State Rifles personnel during a search operation at Naisingpara under Ambassa police station in the Dhalai district.

  • September 4: Combined forces of the Assam Rifles, Assam and Tripura Police recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a joint search operation at Khasiapunji along the Tripura-Assam border. The seizure included one carbine, two revolvers, mortar, one IED and 145 lives bullets. Assam Rifles sources suspected that the NLFT and DHD could have stored these arms and ammunition at the dense forest to carry out militant activities along the inter-state border.

  • August 25: Three NLFT militants kill a surrendered colleague of the outfit, identified as Bikash Debbarma, at his residence in Tuibaklai under Chamahower police station of South Tripura district.

  • August 20: Two NLFT militants, including one identified as Bikash Debbarma, are shot dead by the Tripura State Rifles personnel during an encounter at Thalikpara under Kanchanpur Police station in the North Tripura district. While another militant, Sidhujoy Tripura, is arrested, three used grenades, subscription pads of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT and other incriminating papers are recovered from the encounter site.

  • July 24: One NLFT cadre and his two associates surrender at Killa under Udiapur sub-division in the South Tripura district. They deposited two locally made guns.

  • July 6: Two hand grenades, 10 live rounds and ‘tax’ collection receipt of the NLFT are recovered from Takhapara under Ganganagar police station.

  • July 2: Five NLFT militants surrender before the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Kanchanpur at Anandabazar outpost in the North Tripura district. They were identified as Nirmal Debbarma, Adhin Charan Debbarma, Jitendra Debbarma, Sukumar Debbarma and Ranjit Kumar Reang. They claim to have deserted the hideout in Bangladesh and crossed over the India-Bangladesh border to surrender.

  • June 29: Two NLFT militants, Sharat Malsum, and Chanrai Reang, are shot dead by a joint team of Tripura State Rifles and Central Reserve Police Force during a counter-insurgency operation at Vishnuprasadpara village under Ampi police station in the South Tripura district.

  • June 15: Six NLFT cadres surrendered before Assam Rifles at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district. They also surrendered a two inch motor, hand grenades, detonator and gun powder.

  • June 1: Three militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrendered before the Police at Raishyabari Police Station at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district.

  • May 26: A hardcore NLFT militant was killed in an encounter with the security forces in the Atharamura Hills under Khowai subdivision of the West Tripura district.

  • May 16: NLFT militants who abducted railway engineer Debabrata Das on April 26 from a railway construction site at Dalhampara near Mungiakami block in the Barmura hill ranges in the West Tripura district demanded a ransom of INR 2500000 for his release.

  • May 8: 35 NLFT cadres surrendered before the Commandant of the 14 battalion of Assam Rifles at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district. They also deposited one SLR and hundred rounds of live cartridges.

    Three NLFT militants surrendered before the Commandant of the Sixth battalion of paramilitary Tripura State Rifles at Teliamura in the West Tripura district.

  • April 26: A railway labourer is killed and an engineer is abducted by NLFT militants in the West Tripura district. Police sources said that nearly 15 NLFT militants attacked the Atharomura railway tunnel site under Mungiakami police station. They tried to abduct labourer Dhirendra Debnath, a resident of Teliamura in the district, and shot him dead when he tried to resist. They then abducted engineer Debabrata Das and escaped into the nearby forest.

  • April 24: One NLFT militant, Kishore Debbarma, surrendered at the Tripura State Rifles camp near 19 Miles under Ganganagar police station in the Dhalai district along with 23 rounds of AK bullets.

  • April 22 : Two NLFT collaborators, Sonacharan Jamatia and Uttam Debbarma, surrendered without arms before the Commandant of 5th Battalion Assam Rifles at Mungiakami in the West Tripura district.

    Two NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction are shot dead by Tripura Police at Bijoymasterpara under Langtarai Valley police station in the Dhalai district. "While at around 9.45 am they reached remote Bijoymasterpara-about 14km South-East from police station, the militants led by Swapan Debbarma alias Jaggu suddenly opened fire at them. The TSR jawans immediately retaliated heavily killing two militants on spot. The firefight continued for about 15 minutes", an unnamed police personnel said. "There were about seven to eight militants. While two were killed others managed to escape," he added. One of the slain militants was identified as Puidarai Reang. One Chinese grenade, 27 rounds of AK series ammunition, haversacks and some incriminating documents were recovered from the incident site.

  • March 30: The Superintendent of Police (Special Branch), Claudia A. Lyngwa, while terming the HNLC as "an organisation of a few vested interests," said that deteriorating cadre strength of the outfit had forced it to join hands with the Tripura-based NLFT. She stated that the outfit's cadre strength could be between 70 and 80, including a few senior members camping in Bangladesh. "These (few) vested interests (HNLC activists) are very much aware that they are losing their strength every day and the best option for them is to surrender," she said, adding, "Deteriorating cadre strength has forced HNLC to join hands with the NLFT."

    Twelve NLFT militants surrendered before the Assam Rifles at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district. They were identified as Narahari Janata, Dinash Dbarna, Amardulal Jamarya. Trinajit Janara, Milmany Reang, Falayjpy Triputa, Laxhmanram Reanf, Agnijoy Reang, Rupandra Reang, Tajendra Trang, Titaram Reang, and Kamanjpy Reang.

  • March 27: Two HNLC militants, Vicky Majaw and Leader, are shot dead by Meghalaya Police during an encounter at Umkiang in the Jaintia Hills district. However, three NLFT militants who along with the HNLC militants opened fire on the police personnel manage to escape from the encounter site.

  • March 22: Two collaborators belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrendered and deposited 14 notice pads and several documents of the faction.

  • March 8: An NLFT militant, identified as Daharam Reang, was arrested from the jungles of Govindabari area of Chawmanu police station under Dhalai district.

  • March 3: A hardcore NLFT militant, identified as Ranjan Debbarma, was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Tuikurmacherra under Mugiakami police station. One Chinese grenade and some incriminating documents of the outfit were recovered from the encounter site.

  • February 26: Police arrested four surrendered militants belonging to the NLFT for their involvement in instigating the tribals to occupy a government land near Raj Bhawan in Agartala.

  • February 8: Cadres of the NLFT abducted two supporters of the CPI-Marxist from their village at Shanpara in West Tripura district. A group of armed NLFT insurgents raided the village at night and abducted Rajkumar Debbarma and Ratan Debbarma from their houses.

  • February 5: Security forces arrested four militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT along with arms and ammunition from Raishyabari area of the Dhalai district. They were identified as Rabajoy Tripura, Ripajoy Tripura, Manai Mohan Tripura and Arun Kumar.

  • January 30: A group of armed NLFT cadres snatched 25 Elector's Photo Identity Card from Dalaparti Para village in the Dhalai district.

  • January 23: Two extortionists belonging to the NLFT were arrested by the security forces from Baigunsingpara village under Mungiakami police station in the West Tripura district while they were extorting money from villagers. While INR 17000 in cash was recovered from the possession of the duo, some other extortionists managed to escape.

  • January 11: An encounter between the security forces and the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT militants took place at Old Ramguna Para village of Atharamura range under Salema police station in the Dhalai district. However, the militants escaped from the spot after a brief gun battle. Security forces later recovered several documents including some extortion notices from the incident site.

  • January 8: One NLFT militant, identified as Bironjoy Tripura, was arrested along with arms and ammunition by the security forces after an encounter at Tamarai Para village of Ganganagar police station under Dhalai district. During subsequent search operations, police also recovered three locally made revolvers with live rounds, a bag of Indian currency, medicines, subscription notes and a calendar of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT.

  • January 2: Tripura Police arrested three suspects, identified as Shyamal Debbarma, Nagrai Debbarma and Chitta Debbarma, in connection with the December 31 killing of Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Chandra Mohan Debbarma by the NLFT militants at Naksirai Para village under Kalyanpur police station in the West Tripura district.

  • January 1: NLFT militants opened fire on a civilian, identified as Rabijay Reang, at Debendrapara village under Ampi police station in the South Tripura district. Official sources said that the injured person had been asked by the NLFT cadres to join the outfit and had also not paid the demanded extortion amount to it.

    NLFT militants abducted a civilian, Madhu Tripura, from his house at Dhananjay Para village under Gandacherra police station in the Dhalai district. Madhu is an activist of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist and had refused to join the outfit.

2007

  • December 31: A tribal leader of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist, identified as Chandra Mohan Debbarma, is shot dead by two militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT at Naksirai Para under Kalyanpur police station in the West Tripura district.

  • December 27: Two NLFT militants, Pijush Debbarma and Birendra Debbarma, are arrested at Aidangkur, a remote village under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district. Two high explosive grenades were recovered from their possession.

  • December 26: Meghalaya Police stated that the HNLC is being helped by the NLFT in Jaintia Hills, the NSCN-IM in West Khasi Hills and the NDFB in areas of Ri-Bhoi district. The HNLC's declining manpower and continued failure to start an extortion drive in Shillong city has forced the outfit to seek help of other outfits and extort money from businessmen, especially coal traders, in other districts of the State bordering Bangladesh. "The firepower of HNLC is less at present and the outfit cannot buy more weapons due to financial constraints. It has to borrow arms from other militant groups," said an unnamed source.

  • December 17: Meghalaya Police neutralized a joint camp of the HNLC and NLFT during an operation at Narpuh reserve forest in the Jaintia Hills. A number of 9-mm live cartridges, .22 live cartridges, one very high frequency handset, six micro cassettes, a prescription of a Bangladeshi doctor, photographs, a diary and four butts of AK-56 rifles were recovered from the camp. However, no arrests were made.

  • December 10: Two militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as, Santilal Tripura alias Sathai and Mrinal Debbarma alias Munwi surrendered before the security forces at the Tripura State Rifles Post under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district.

    Two NLFT militants, Biswarai Debbarma and Shyamal Debbarma, surrendered before the Assistant Commandant of Tripura State Rifles (10th Battalion) at Murabari Post in the West Tripura District. They also deposited one grenade and 13 rounds of bullets.

  • One militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Sanjit Kumar Jamatia surrendered before the security forces in Khasiamangal area of Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district.

  • December 4: Militants of the NLFT abducted two persons, identified as Shakti Rishidas and Brajendra Das, at gunpoint in the Dhalai district. Both of them are residents of Dalucherra village under Salema police station, and were abducted when they went to graze cattle near the Longtarai hill range.

  • November 28: Police personnel recovered the dead body of a NLFT militant, identified as Surendra Debbarma of Jaglung Bari, from a pond at Dagamabari under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district. Two AK-56 rifles with ammunition were also recovered from the incident site.

    Police arrested one militant belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Karmajoy Reang of Thali Bari, under Taidu police station in the South Tripura district.

  • November 26: Two militants belonging to the NLFT, Ratna Hajury Jamatia of Bastavmura under Takarjala police station and Sunil Jamatia of Hataikachakpara under Takarjala police station, surrendered to the Deputy Superintendent of Police at Raishyabari in the Dhalai district. They deposited 68 rounds of `303 rifle to the police.

  • November 24: Assam Rifles personnel in a counter-insurgency operation killed three hardcore militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, at Dagmabari under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district. They were identified as Rajmohan Jamatia alias Raima of Teliamura, Baksikia Jamatia of Kamalpur and Shalsi Debbarma. Three AK-56 rifles, seven AK magazines, a grenade, 231 rounds of ammunition, two explosive detonators and some incriminating documents were recovered from the incident site.

  • Five NLFT militants, Amrit Sadhan Jamatia, Mahenjoy Reang, Pabiram Reang, Abhiram Reang and Manindra Reang, surrendered before the AR personnel at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district. Two firearms and some incriminating documents were deposited by them.

  • November 18: Assam Rifles personnel arrested one militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, Nibedhan Reang, from the Kanchanpur area.

  • November 9: One NLFT cadre from the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Sudhan Debbarma of Kartik para, was arrested from the West Tripura district.

  • November 8: Security forces arrested two NLFT militants from the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Raban Debbarma and Surendra Debbarma, from a remote place under Champahowar police station in the West Tripura district.

  • November 4: Security forces during a search operation arrested three NLFT-BM faction cadres, identified as Rajesh Deb Barma, Nil Kanta Deb Barma and Rabindra Deb Barma, from the outskirts of Jam Tilla village in the West Tripura district. Sources revealed that the three militants had been intimidating and coercing the people of West Tripura district to support NLFT-BM faction against their will.

  • November 2: One NLFT cadre, identified as Haitarai Debbarma of Belapur under Ranirbazar police station, surrendered along with five rounds of SLR before the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Subash Debbarma, at Ganganagar in the same district.

  • October 31: Two militants belonging to the NLFT, Adhi Mohan Tripura and Sankar Debbarma, were arrested by the SFs during two separate raids at Damcherra and Jirania in the West Tripura district.

  • October 28: Two NLFT militants, Rambajoy Reang alias Rojung and Biranjoy Reang alias Bikhlai, surrendered before the SFs at Hrangkhal Para under Teliamura police station in the Dhalai district. One 9-mm revolver with 6 live rounds and two 36 HE Grenade are deposited by them.

  • October 24: A batch of 135 cadres of the NLFT is being imparted guerrilla training at a hide-out in Bangladesh. Two NLFT militants, Sajanrai Reang and Swarna Reang, who surrendered before the security forces at Manikpur in the Dhalai district on October 22, revealed the information that the rigorous training of the fresh batch is almost completed and ‘passing out parade’ is likely to be held by November. They have also revealed that 27 cadres of the batch will be sent to Karachi in Pakistan for specialized training that to be imparted by designated officers of the Pakistani external intelligence agency, Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). Both the surrendered cadres also confessed that they are imparted arms training in Hongkong.

  • October 17: The NLFT militants abducted one civilian, Sudhanshu Nath, from Barcherra area under Kanchanpur subdivision in the North Tripura district.

    Two militants of the NLFT- Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Dipen Tripura and Dharmendra Reang, surrendered to the security forces at Chhawmanu in the Dhalai district along with two country-made guns.

  • October 8: Three cadres belonging to the NLFT – Biswamohan Debabarma faction, Dushanjoy Tripura, Santi Joy Tripura and Phirak Tripura, surrendered at Bairagi Dukan.

    One NLFT–Biswamohan militant, Sakhi Debbarma of Tamakari under Sidhai police station, also surrendered before the Deputy Commandant of the 10th Tripura State Rifles battalion at an unspecified location along with 10 rounds of `303 ammunitions.

    One more NLFT– Biswamohan cadre, Bikramjoy Reang, surrendered to the SFs along with one revolver, one live round and some Bangladeshi currency at an unspecified location.

  • October 6: One NLFT militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Ram Bahadur Reang, surrendered before the Tripura States Rifles personnel at Subhash Nagar headquarters under Kanchanpur sub-division in the North Tripura district. He deposited one revolver with five rounds of live bullet.

  • October 4: Tripurainfo reports that the Borok National Council of Tripura (BNCT) is carrying out a fresh recruitment drive in the Kanchanpur and Longthorai valleys. About 42 tribal youths were recruited from Mrityunjoypara, Sarbajoypara, Joymonipara and Bhandarima under Kanchanpur subdivision in the North Tripura district. Earlier, 32 tribal boys joined the outfit in September 2007. All the new recruits were sent to Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh to receive guerrilla training and they will be reportedly sent back before the February 2008-elections in the State.

    One NLFT collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Nityananda Tripura, surrenders before the Border Security Force at Chawmanu post in the Dhalai district on.

  • September 29: Tripurainfo reports that Ranjit Debbarma, ‘president’ of the ATTF, has stated in an online interview to a Website that the NLFT and ATTF are operating jointly. "The present leadership of NLFT is running the organization along correct lines. This has made it possible for us to work together. As of now our relations are very good," Debbarma says. "TPDF (political wing of the ATTF) and NLFT are different organizations; their main objective is one and the same - restoration of Tripura´s sovereign independence. Some leaders of the NLFT were self-centred and promoted selfish interests. They were not genuine revolutionaries. That leadership has gone now," he added.

  • September 28: A group of suspected militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT attacked the residence of one Prajapati Nama Sudra at Asha Purna Roaja Para under Salema police station of Dhalai district. However, no casualty was reported.

    Two NLFT cadres, Tangsa Tripura and Malin Debbarma, are arrested from Mogpara under Gandacherra police station in the Dhalai district.

  • September 27: An encounter occurs between the NLFT militants and security force (SF) personnel at Patlongjoypara under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. During the subsequent search operation, four Borok National Council of Tripura (BNCT) militants, Lankajoy Reang, Nimanjoy Reang, Ganga Rai Reang and Britta Ram Reang, are arrested and three improvised country made guns are recovered. However six other militants, Dharam Reang, Alajoy Reang, Padarai Reang, Thomas Uchai, Santosh Debbarma and Jhan Jamatia, managed to escape from the incident site.

  • September 23: One suspected NLFT militant, Biswamohan Tripura, is arrested from a hut near Purnaron Rouja Para under Longthorai Valley police station in the Dhalai district. One loaded country-made gun is recovered from him.

  • September 21: Assam Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel recover two AK-47 rifles, 36 hand grenades, 69 bullets and collection receipts from a hideout of the NLFT outfit at Khasiapunji in the Karimganj district along the Assam-Tripura border. An album carrying photographs of women cadres of the outfit is also recovered from the hideout.

  • August 31: Suspected NLFT militants abducted a tribal villager, Negendra Debbarma, from Iswar Chowdhury para under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district.

  • August 28: Militants of the NLFT attacked a work site of the Northeast Frontier Railway at Swapnabari under Manu police station in the Dhalai district and killed a soldier of the Tripura State Rifles. Police sources said a team of TSR soldiers was escorting railway construction workers from Swapnabari, when the attack occurred. With this incident, at least seven persons, including two security force personnel, have reportedly been killed in August.

  • August 27: One Tripura State Rifles personnel, Jayanta Roy, is killed by NLFT militants belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction at a work site of the North East Frontier Railways at Swapnabari under Manu police station in the West Tripura district. With this incident, at least seven persons, including two security force personnel, have reportedly been killed in August.

  • August 19: NLFT militants abduct a person, Mohanlal Debbarma, from the Shantir Bazaar area under Kamalpur subdivision of Dhalai district. Mohanlal Debbarma, who is the younger brother of Parimal Debbarma, a local leader of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, was abducted as he refused to part with funds meant for development work, as demanded by the militants.

  • August 16: The decomposed body of a suspected collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT is recovered on from Pathlongjoypara under Kanchanpur police station in North Tripura district. Karyai Reang had been abducted by unidentified militants from his house at Pathlongjoypara recently. But his relatives had not informed the police about the incident. Police further said that he was wanted in an extortion case.

  • August 15: NLFT militants ambush a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) patrolling party at Prabhumanipara in the Dhalai district, injuring a CRPF constable, Paramjit Yadav.

  • August 3: Two NLFT militants, identified as Bishnu Ram Tripura and Ranjit Debbarma, surrendered to the Assam Rifles along with two revolvers and live cartridges at Kanchanpur camp in the North Tripura district.

  • July 31: Security Forces ambushed and killed one NLFT – Biswamohan Debabarma faction militant, identified as Sunaranjan Chakma, at Bilaicherri under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district. One revolver was recovered from the incident site.

  • July 30: Five unidentified militants belonging to the NLFT surrendered to the SFs at an unspecified location. Two more unidentified cadres, including a self-styled corporal of the same outfit, also surrendered to the police at Gandacherra in the Dhalai district.

  • July 19: Six unidentified NLFT militants surrendered to the Assam Rifles personnel and deposited one AK-47 rifle and 68 live cartridges at Teliamura in the West Tripura district.

  • July 16: Four NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Jagatsadan Jamatia, Joy Jamatia, Ukiljoy Jamatia and Saya Jamatiya, surrendered to the Assam Rifles personnel at Teliamura in the West Tripura district along with one AK 47 rifle, 36 rounds of bullet and one Japanese wireless set.

    Two collaborators of the NLFT, Krishnamanik Tripura of Raishyabari and Sanjit Debbarma, surrendered to security forces at Hrangkhwalpara under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district.

  • July 14: Police recovered the dead body of a 50-year-old Mannya Kumar Tripura from Manikpur in the Dhalai district.

  • July 13: Mannya Kumar Tripura, a Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and the vice chairman of the East Govindabari Village Committee under Chawmanu police station in Dhalai district, is abducted along with two Booth Level Officers (BLOs), by Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT militants while returning after taking images of voters of Naisharampara under Chawmanu Assembly constituency in the same district. The two BLOs, identified as Khsetrajoy Reang and Raikumar Tripura, are released later.

  • July 6: Two members of the NLFT, identified Shankar Debbarma and Mangal Debbarma, are arrested by the security forces at Dasharambari near Jirania in the West Tripura district. A pencil pistol and 20 cartridges are recovered from their possession.

  • July 1: Suspected NLFT militants abducted three civilians, Manikya Reang, Kunjamohan Reang and Joysingh Reang, from Bhagaicheeri village under Ambassa police station in the Dhalai District.

  • June 29: Two NLFT cadres, identified as Balendra Reang and Madhuram Rang, surrendered to the security forces at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district.

  • June 27: Four NLFT militants, identified as Harendra Debbarma, Parthanjoy Reang, J S Jamatiya and A P Jamatiya surrendered to the security forces at Kanchanpur in North Tripura and at Birganj in South Tripura district along with one rifle, two cartridges and one hand grenade.

  • June 15: Nine unidentified NLFT militants surrendered to the security forces along with two grenades, revolvers and a huge cache of ammunition at Khumulwng in the West Tripura district. Another NLFT militant also surrendered to the police at Khowai. Meanwhile, two more NLFT cadres surrendered to the police at Ompi in the South Tripura district.

  • June 13: An arrested insurgent belonging to the NLFT, identified as Maniram Tripura, managed to escape from police custody when he is being taken to the Kulai hospital for a routine check up at Kulai in the Dhalai district. He was arrested on June 6 in connection with an ambush on a Border Security Force (BSF) patrol party on the same day in which one BSF personnel is killed at Raisyabari in the Dhalai district.

  • June 12: Five militants of the NLFT and ATTF surrendered to the Assam Rifles in two separate incidents in Tripura. Three NLFT militants, identified as Binanjoy Reang alias Chang, Bajuban Reang alias Kakhurai and Mary Darlong, surrendered along with two revolvers and ammunition in the North Tripura district. Similarly, two unidentified insurgents of the ATTF surrendered at Kamalpur in the Dhalai district.

  • June 9: Suspected NLFT militants abducted one civilian, identified as Utpal Debbarma, from Aidangkur under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district.

  • June 7: One NLFT cadre, identified as Bikramjoy Tripura, is arrested by the security forces from Thalcherra under Raishaybari police station in the Dhalai district in connection with the killing of one Border Security Force personnel on June 6.

  • June 6: Militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, killed one Border Security Force personnel, identified as Dina Bandhu Pal, patrolling at Raishyabari border under Sikandar para Border out Post in the Dhalai district. Security forces also recovered one magazine of SLR with 20 rounds of cartridges from the incident site.

    Three insurgents of the NLFT surrendered before the Central Reserve Police Force at Nutunbazaar in the South Tripura district, along with several live cartridges. Altogether 81 insurgents of different outfits have reportedly surrendered to the SFs since January 2007.

  • June 4: Two militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Sailen Debbarma and Sankar Jamatia, are killed in an encounter with the SFs at Halamtuicha under Champahower police station in the West Tripura district. One Chinese grenade was recovered from the encounter site.

    Two collaborators of NLFT and ATTF, identified as Sakti Debbarma of Tuikuipara and Madan Debbarma of Bahadur Sardarpara, surrendered to the SFs at Teliamura in the same district.

  • June 3: Suspected militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT abducted six labourers from Govindabari under Manikpur police station in the Dhalai district. They are identified as Nikunja Nath of Padmabill in Khowai, Vidhyarai, Hussain Miah, Fakar Miah, Gian Miah and Khalai Miah of Assam.

  • May 28: The Special Branch (intelligence wing) of Tripura Police revealed that the NLFT, depleted by a spate of desertions and surrenders over the past three years, is preparing to regroup itself and is reportedly planning to carry out a fresh offensive against the security forces. Intelligence sources said that the NLFT chief Biswamohan Debbarma held a meeting with his commanders in a jungle hideout across the Indo-Bangladesh border at Katacherra near Raisyabari in the Dhalai district on May 17 and planned to target camps of the Tripura State Rifles in the interior areas of the State.

  • May 16: Eight militants, including two women cadres, belonging to the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) surrendered to the security forces along with one revolver, one grenade and 98 rounds of bullets in the West Tripura district.

  • May 11: Suspected NLFT militants triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in the Dhalai district. However, no casualties were reported.

    Three NLFT militants, Briguram Jamatia, Dhancharai Reang and Mitrojy Reang, surrendered to the security forces along with two country made revolvers at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district.

    One collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Rupa Kumar Tripura of Matirai Roaja Para under Salema police station, surrendered to the SF personnel at B. C. Para in the Dhalai district.

  • May 8: Four militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrender to the Police along with two factory made revolvers- one .38 revolver, three live rounds of cartridges. They were identified as Brajendra Reang alias Buchu, Sandairam Reang alias Samuk Naisiekson, Halam alias Debra and Mrinal Debbarma.

  • May 7: NLFT militants abduct a civilian, Niru Kumar Debbarma, from Raimohan Sadhupara village under Kalayanpur police station in the West Tripura district on.

  • May 6: Police arrest a NLFT collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Ashok Kumar Debbarma, from Tuisaharpek under Kalyanpur police station in the West Tripura district.

  • May 4: An encounter between Tripura State Rifles personnel and NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction is reported from Chandraipara under Ambassa police station in the Dhalai District.

    A NLFT militant belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Tabji Rai Reang, is arrested along with a country-made gun from Rabamanipura under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura District.

  • April 29: Two cadres of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Jamidar Tripura alias Bhanudoy and Suresh Tripura, surrendered at Karbook in the South Tripura district along with ten live rounds of .303 rifles and ten live rounds of 7.62 SLR.

  • April 22: One NLFT cadre belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Sandhya Ram Debbarma, surrendered at Hrankhal Para camp in the West Tripura district along with one factory made 9-mm and two live rounds of cartridges.

  • April 17: Security forces arrested one cadre of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Jariham Reang, from Shilabari under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district along with one country made gun.

  • April 5: Four hardcore cadres of ATTF and the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of NLFT surrendered to the SFs at Jirania in West Tripura district.

  • April 3: Two hardcore militants, identified as Laila Tripura alias Boura and Adam Jyoti Tripura, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT surrendered and deposited two 9-mm revolvers, one grenade and five live rounds of 9-mm revolver at BSF headquarters at Salbagan in the West Tripura district.

    One NLFT Biswamohan Debbarma faction cadre, Chandi Charan Tripura alias Lambu, surrendered and deposited 176 rounds of 303 rifle, two rounds of 7.62-mm and two rounds of 9-mm revolver at BSF headquarters in Udaipur in the South Tripura district. Official sources said he escaped from the outfit’s Bangladesh hideout a couple of days ago and contacted the BSF officials.

    Another cadre from the NLFT’s Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Govinda Koloi, surrendered and deposited one AK-66 rifle, two magazines and 94 live rounds before the police personnel of Ambassa in the Dhalai district.

  • March 29: Two extremists of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT, identified as Reklai Jamatia and Amish Kumar Jamatia, surrendered before the police along with one pistol and three live rounds at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district.

  • March 6: Two police personnel, Samir Choudhury and Aloke Das, are killed and two others, Shyama Chandra Debbarma and Sukdeb Tripura, are injured in an ambush by the NLFT militants at Binan Hazaripara under Champahawr police station in Khowai subdivision of West Tripura district. Militants also managed to decamp with two AK 47 rifles.

  • March 6: Three militants, including a 'lance corporal' of the NLFT, are arrested by the security forces following an encounter at Tankarai Para under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district. Four country made guns are recovered from them.

  • March 5: Tripurainfo reports that personnel of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) arrested four militants operating in Tripura, including a NLFT cadre Suren Debbarma, from Moulavibazaar area on an unspecified date in February. Suren Debbarma was involved in several ambushes on security forces and massacres of civilians in Tripura. He was an 'area commander' of Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT when he led a ambush on TSR, in which 20 security personnel were killed at Hirapur in the West Tripura district on August 20, 2002. Later he defected to NLFT's Biswamohan Debabarma faction.

  • March 4: An NLFT militant belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Rabarai Reang, is arrested from Sachindra Chowdhury area under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district.

  • March 2: Militants shot dead two persons, Tikendra Tripura and Tapan Tripura, at Joychandrapara under Langatarai Valley police station in the Dhalai district. Police suspect the involvement of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT.

  • March 2: Two NLFT militants belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as ‘Sergeant’ Biralal Kishore Jamatia alias Barchu alias Baga and ‘Corporal’ Nayan Hari Jamatia alias Nanjia, surrender at Jampaijala under Takarjala police station in the West Tripura district. They deposit 9mm carbine ammn-20 rounds, 7.62 BDR-8 rounds, Chinese grenade-1. Two collaborators of the same faction, identified as Sailaram Reang and Jagat Sadhan Jamatia, also surrender with them.

  • March 2: Two militants of the ATTF and NLFT, identified as Biraha Kumar Jamatia alias Yakharia and Geeta Tripura alias Kaplop, surrender at Teliamura in the West Tripura district. They deposit two 38 factory-made revolvers along with six live rounds of 38 ball ammunitions. The report adds that 21 militants surrendered before the 15 Assam Rifles alone in the last four months.

  • March 1: One NLFT militant, Jwancha Tripura, is shot dead by Dhalai district police at Sajaigroupingpara under Manu police station. While other militants manage to escape, a Chinese grenade is recovered from the encounter site.

  • February 25: Two unidentified NLFT collaborators are arrested from Kalyanpur and Teliamura police station areas in the West Tripura district.

  • February 25: Two NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, identified as Dinesh Debbarma and Sachindra Debbarma, surrender before Tripura Police at Radhapur in the South Tripura district.

  • February 24: An 'area commander' of the NLFT, identified as Krishnadhan Debbarma, is killed in retaliatory firing by the security force (SF) personnel who were attacked by the militants at Bablabari village under Champahaor police station in the West Tripura district. SF personnel recovered spent cartridges and other used materials from hideout of the militants who escaped with Debbarma's firearms. Debbarma had reportedly been on the run for the past two years.

  • February 20: One NLFT militant, Narendra Debbarma alias Kalak, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction is arrested from his residence at Tuichakatar village under Salema police station in the in the Dhalai district. Narendra was involved in the abduction of a person, Sailendra Debbarma, from South Panbua under the same police station. A collaborator of the same outfit, identified as Sachindra Debbarma, is also arrested from Champahowar area in the same district.

  • February 16: A leader of the ruling Communist Party of India- Marxist (CPI-M), Phalendra Reang, who was abducted by NLFT militants at gun point from his residence at Ashapurnaroaja Para area in the Dhalai district on January 8, is released after 39 days of captivity.

  • February 10: Three NLFT militants, Bimal Debbarma, Mangal Debbarma and Rupchand Debbarma, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender at Khumlwng in the West Tripura district. According to police sources, they escaped from their hideouts in Bangladesh with arms and ammunition.

  • February 8: A tribal leader belonging to the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), identified as Ratansen Tripura, is killed by NLFT militants at his home in the Ratan Nagar village of Dhalai district. Militants while fleeing after the killing shot at and injured another CPI-M worker, Tanijay Tripura, near the Ratan Nagar bridge. Sources said CPI-M leader was killed because he refused to pay extortion to the militants.

    Police arrest three NLFT militants, identified as Ratan Tripura, Saidol Asalong and Alakjay Asalong, from a shop in GB Market Square.

  • February 5: Security force personnel arrested a suspected NLFT militant, Kutti Ram Tripura, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction during a search operation at old Maliraj Roaja para under Salema police station in the Dhalai district.

  • February 1: The Union Tribal Welfare Minister, Jitendra Chowdhury, said that INR 55 million out of a total INR 550 million is sanctioned as the first instalment for the rehabilitation of the militants of the Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT.

  • January 25: Seven militants of the ATTF and NLFT surrendered at Hrankhalpara under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. They deposited two 9mm Pistols with 10 rounds, one 9mm Carbine with 10 rounds, two 9mm auto Pistols with 9 rounds and 50 rounds of 303-rifle. The militants are identified as Satya Ranjan Debbarma, Jogal Debbarma, Ashis Kumar Debbarma, Tapan Debbarma, Ashesh Debbarma, Indra Mohan Malsum and Satya Ranjan Debbarma.

  • January 16: Two NLFT militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Nirmal Debbarma and Binode Debbarma, are arrested following an encounter with the security force personnel at Hari Kumar Para under Champahowar police station in the West Tripura district. While one khukri (Nepalese knife) and some incriminating documents are recovered, other militants manage to escape from the incident site.

    A NLFT militant, Galpuram Reang, is arrested from Salka Para village under Ompi police station.

  • January 14: A NLFT militant, Debrai Tripura, is wounded in an internecine clash between cadres of the same outfit at Ananada Royaja Para village under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district.

    A NLFT militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Memberjoy Tripura, is arrested during a search operation at village Uju Chakma Para under Raishyabari police station in the Dhalai district.

  • January 10: The dead body of a youth, Gopaljoy Tripura, who was abducted by NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction from his residence at Chowmanu in the Dhalai district, was recovered from a nearby forest.

  • December 27: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, while addressing personnel of the Border Security Force at Silacherri Border outpost in the South Tripura district, said that the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT and ATTF run 26 hideouts in Bangladesh. The Chief Minister accused both the outfits of trying to create tension in the State at the behest of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence.

  • December 26: Three civilians, Anil Debnath and Human Miah and Ahid Miah, are abducted by suspected NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction in the South Tripura district.

    NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction trigger two successive landmine blasts at a railway construction site under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. However, no casualty is reported.

  • December 22: At least four unidentified NLFT cadres surrender before the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Khowai in the West Tripura district. They deposit one two-inch motor bomb, many live cartridges of AK-47 and one country made gun.

  • December 19: Three NLFT militants, ‘sergeant major’ Daharam Reang alias Dafa, Bellarai Reang alias Binna and Raj Kumar Tripura alias Raja, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender before the Assam Rifles personnel at Bamanchara under Ambassa police station in the Dhalai district.

  • December 18: Two NLFT cadres, Manmohan Tripura and Manoranjan Tripura, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender before the police at Narayanpur in the Gandacherra area of Dhalai district. The duo also deposit one 9-mm revolver with four live rounds of bullet.

    Chief Minister Manik Sarkar informs the State Legislative Assembly, that 169 persons were killed, 182 injured and 189 abducted by militant outfits, primarily the ATTF and NLFT, between January 1, 2004, and November 30, 2006. 184 incidents of militant attacks were registered in 2004. The figure is 115 in 2005 and 94 in 2006 (till November 30). He informed that 71 security force personnel were killed in militancy-related violence over the past two years. 101 militants are killed during the same period, discloses Sarkar.

  • December 5: An unidentified NLFT cadre is killed during an encounter with the police personnel at Rainya in the South Tripura district.

  • November 30: The Deputy Inspector General (Tripura Frontier) of the BSF, P. J. Sebastian, said that the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT and the ATTF has 57 hideouts in Bangladesh, and some of them are located in that country's capital Dhaka. Sebastian informed: "Altogether 172 insurgent camps belonging to NE underground groups are existing in Bangladesh and most of the camps are operating in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), Sylhet and Dhaka."

  • November 26: One NLFT militant of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Gobinda Reang, surrenders at Longtharai Valley in the Dhalai district. He deposited one AK-47 rifle, 3 magazines, 81 round of live bullets of AK-47, three Chinese grenades and 144 rounds of 7.62 SLR.

  • November 25: One NLFT collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Balindra Debbarma, is arrested by SF personnel during a search operation at Bashikobrapara village under Jirania police station in the West Tripura district. Several subscription notes of the outfit and cash worth INR 7000 were recovered from his possession.

    A NLFT collaborator of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Khikhormoni Tripura, is arrested during a search operation under Manu police station in the Dhalai district.

  • November 22: Two NLFT cadres are injured in an encounter between Tripura State Rifles personnel and militants at a village along Khowai-Kamalpur bordering areas in the Dhalai district. While the other militants manage to escape, one AK-47 rifle and one Self Loading Rifle are recovered from the encounter site.

  • November 21: Three NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, 'warrant officer' Rabindar Reang alias Rafai, 'corporal seven' Debbarma and Rajprasad Reang alias Khosa, surrender at Kanchapur. They deposited one AK-47 rifle, one Chinese grenade, three AK magazines with 97 rounds of live bullets and a combat dragger.

  • November 15: A tribal villager, Amulya Debbarma, is abducted by suspected militants from Barabhagai village under Khowai police station in the West Tripura district. Security force personnel in a subsequent search operation in the same district arrested at least four cadres of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT. While two militants, Bhakta Kaloiand and Ravi Kumar Kaloi, are arrested from Jiyalcherra area under Teliamura police station, two others, Uttam Debbarma and Shambu Charan Debbarma alias Kela, are arrested from South Gakulnagar area under Jirania police station.

  • November 12: Two NLFT militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction, Ram Chandra Debbarma and Samir Debbarma, surrender before the Assam Rifles at Bamancherra camp under Kamalpur police station in the Dhalai district. They escape from a militant hideout in Bangladesh, and deposit two country made revolvers to the security force personnel.

  • November 8: NLFT militants assault villagers at Dhanrai under Taidu police station in the South Tripura district. While one villager, Nabin Debbarma, is injured, at least eight dwelling huts are set ablaze by militants. Such attack on villagers follows the killing of a NLFT militant by SF personnel in an encounter at the same place earlier on the day.

    A NLFT militant, Bichitra Debbarma, is killed in an encounter with SF personnel at Dhanrai under Taidu police station in the South Tripura district. Two magazines with 60 rounds and 31 loose bullets of AK series rifles are recovered from his possession.

  • November 7: An unidentified NLFT militant is killed in an encounter with SF personnel at Nimanjoypara under Ganganagar police station in the Dhalai district.

  • November 4: Director General of Police of Tripura, G. M. Srivastava, while expressing concern at a press briefing in Agartala over the increasing violence perpetrated by the NLFT, says that cadres of the outfit are patronized by a section of former MNF leaders. Srivastava also mentions that the NLFT is receiving fresh support from various militant outfits in northeast as well as external forces operating from Bangladesh, by adding that the headquarters of militancy in the region has shifted from Shillong in Meghalaya to Aizawl in Mizoram.

  • November 1: Intelligence sources report about increasing infiltration by militants in Tripura following the changed political situation in neighbouring Bangladesh. Reports indicate that more than 50 NLFT cadres of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction and at least 30 ATTF cadres crossed over to the State from Bangladesh through porous border in the past 90 days. More than 15 NLFT and 7 ATTF militants enter the State through the Noliabari-Jamia colony area of Khowai sub-division in the West Tripura district in July. “The number has increased considerably in August month,” says the source adding that about 20-25 NLFT and 12-13 ATTF militants infiltrate into the State through Ranthan Chaudhury Para area under Chamanu sub-division in the Dhalai district.

  • October 29: A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, identified as Abhijit Biswas, is killed and another wounded by NLFT militants at a remote place between Birmoni para and Padmakumar para under Nepal tilla police station in the Dhalai district. They also escaped with one AK-series rifle of the TSR personnel.

    Central Reserve Police Force personnel retalite when NLFT cadres fired upon them while they were patrolling the Ambassa-Gandacherra road on a spot near Jagabandhu para in the Dhalai district. However, no casualties were reported.

  • October 27: At least four suspected NLFT collaborators, Habel Koloi, Labarai Koloi, Surendera Debbarma and Tipendra Debbarma, are arrested for their involvement in the October 26 militant attack on TSR personnel at Joychandrapara in the Dhalai district in which two TSR personnel were killed.

  • October 26: NLFT militants of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction ambush and kill two TSR personnel in the Dhalai district. The TSR personnel were engaged for the protection of the railway construction works at Sindhu Kumarpara in the Dhalai district. The militants took away one AK-47 rifle belong to the TSR personnel.

  • October 25: NLFT cadres belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction kill one Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and injure an unspecified number of them in a militant ambush at Sindhu Kumar Para under Manu police station in the Dhalai district. Though TSR personnel retaliated, no casualty was reported from the side of the militants.

  • October 24: A jeep driver, Pranab Modak, is abducted by the NLFT from Behalabari in the West Tripura district along India-Bangladesh border.

    Two CRPF personnel, Shyamdev Das and Shravan Kumar, are shot dead by the NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction at Dangabari area in the Dhalai district. The militants decamp with one self-loading rifle and one AK-series rifle, wielded by the slain paramilitary personnel, along with a huge cache of explosives.

  • October 20: Two Tripura State Rifles personnel are killed in an ambush by the NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction at Lungfung under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. The militants decamp with two AK series rifles with three magazines each.

  • October 18: Two NLFT militants, Modi Ram Tripura alias Bimal and Sanjit Debbarma alias Noya, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender before the Border Security Force personnel at Maharanichera under Udaipur sub-division in the South Tripura district.

    Bimal and Noya escape without arms from their camp at Laogong in Bangladesh.

  • October 12: NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction open fire on SF personnel who retaliate resulting in the escape of the militants from Kantiyapara under Champahowar police station in the Khowai subdivision of West Tripura district.

    A fully loaded magazine of AK series rifle, bags, medicines and subscription of the banned outfit are recovered from the incident site.

  • October 5: At least 18 persons are arrested and later interrogated in connection with the October 3 attack by the NLFT on a Silchar-bound civil convoy along the Assam-Tripura National Highway No 44 in which a woman passenger died and three persons were injured.

  • October 3: NLFT militants attack a Silchar-bound civil convoy along the Assam-Tripura National Highway No 44 killing a woman passenger and injuring three persons at New Kumardhan Para under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district.

  • September 28: Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, said at a press briefing, "Total number of NLFT and ATTF hideouts in Bangladesh has reduced from 56 to 26 recently," adding, "but there is no room for complacency.

    Insurgents have been trying to launch fresh offensive to disrupt the peace in the state and we have to remain vigilant as ever".

  • September 25: Two NLFT cadres, Chitta Debbarma and Sangram Debbarma, surrender before the security forces at Tulasikhar in the West Tripura district.

  • September 25: The Commissioner of State Tribal Welfare Department, S. K. Das, says that around 900 hectares of lands are identified in Tripura to rehabilitate the surrendered militants belonging to Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT.

  • September 24: Three cadres belonging to the ATTF and NLFT surrender before Tripura Police at Kanchanpur. They were identified as Dhanu Debbarma alias Danger, Ajit Debbarma and Manik Reang.

  • September 24: A NLFT collaborator, Sachindra Tripura, is arrested from Jatindraroaja Para in the Dhalai district.

  • September 21: An encounter takes place between Assam Rifles personnel and a group of NLFT cadres at Bogapara under Ganganagar police station in the Dhalai district. However, there are no reports of casualty on either side. The troops latter seized a wireless set, three pistols, a .2-inch mortar, two bolt-action rifles and incriminating documents from the incident site.

  • September 20: Three NLFT cadres, Birodh Debbarma, Ranjan Debbarma and Ringlina Reang, surrender before the authorities at an unspecified place in the Dhalai district and deposit one 7.62 self-loading rifle and a huge quantity of ammunition.

  • September 9: Two self styled leaders of the NLFT, Sailen Debbarma and Neru Debbarma, surrender before the Superintendent Police of the West Tripura district, G.S. Rao, at Chakmaghat. The surrendered militants had earlier deserted their camps in Bangladesh.

  • September 7: A Special Police Officer, Jahindra Debbarma, who was abducted along with five other persons by the NLFT from Gokulpur area under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district on September 4, is shot dead at Kakracherra. However, militants released the five other persons after extracting ransom. Two arrested militants of the outfit confessed during their interrogation about the killing of Jahindra.

  • September 4: Suspected NLFT militants keep hostage at Baramura Hill range six unidentified persons, abducted by them from village South Gokulnagar under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district. Reports add that a group of heavily armed militants entered the village at midnight, abducted 16 tribals at gunpoint, and later released 10 of them. “The NLFT militants had earlier demanded huge subscriptions from the impoverished tribal villagers. While a country-make gun is recovered from the possession of the arrested militant, others manage to escape from the encounter site.

  • August 15: Two tribal villagers, Lamonjoy Reang and Profullajoy Reang, are shot dead by NLFT militants at Tuichama under Ganganagar police station in the Dhalai district. While Lamonjoy Reang is a surrendered NLFT cadre, his younger brother Profullajoy Reang is a former over-ground collaborator of the outfit.

  • August 14: The NLFT cadres belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction attack SF personnel who retaliate near Chowmanu-Thacherra road in the Dhalai district. However, a tribal villager, Sadan Bikash Chakma, is injured in the encounter.

The militants manage to escape leaving behind an AK 56 rifle which is recovered subsequently.

  • July 30: A NLFT cadre, Fulcharan Debbarma, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction is killed in an encounter with the police at Chapaniacherra under Manu police station in the Dhalai district. One grenade is recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

  • July 29: Two unidentified NLFT cadres belonging to Biswamohan Debbarma faction are killed in an encounter with the security force (SF) personnel at Nilecherra under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. Two country-made guns are recovered from the possession of the slain militants.

  • July 26: Two NLFT cadres, Giriendra Reang and Ramchandra Reang, are arrested following an encounter with the SFs at Urihampara under Kanchanpur police station in the North Tripura district. Two country-made guns and one grenade are recovered from the incident site.

  • June 18: A villager, Bishnuram Reang, is abducted at gun-point by the NLFT cadres belonging to its Biswamohan Debbarma faction from village Kanchancherra under Kanchanpur subdivision in the North Tripura district.

  • June 14: A NLFT cadre of the Biswamohan faction, identified as Chitra Kumar Jamatia, is killed in an encounter at Ekjancherra under Ompi police station in the South Tripura district. While a security force personnel, Tapan Shil, is wounded, other militants manage to escape from the incident site.

  • June 12: Ten NLFT cadres are killed in a one hour-long fierce gun battle with a joint force of Army and the Rapid Action Battalion at Sajek border area under Baghaichhari sub-district in the Rangamati district of Bangladesh. According to Bangladeshi army sources, an estimated 60 to 70 NLFT militants were staying at border area Sajek for the last few days and were confronted by a joint team of Army and RAB-7 led by Lieutenant Colonel Anisur Reza and Major Mahiuddin. Following the gun battle, the NLFT militants managed to escape leaving behind ten dead bodies of their colleagues. The joint force also recovered an unspecified quantity of arms and ammunition from the hideout.

  • June 9: Five unidentified cadres of the NLFT surrender before the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Kanchanpur, Apan Jamatiya, at Anandanagar in the North Tripura district. According to police sources, one of the five, a 'self-styled sergeant', confessed that top leaders of the outfit are living a lavish life in different towns of neighbouring Bangladesh and other countries, while cadres are facing hardships in the forests of Tripura and Bangladesh and are looking for opportunities to flee from their hideouts.

  • June 5: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs assures the Tripura Government, following a review meeting held in New Dehi, to release Rupees 20 crore for rehabilitation of the surrendered cadres belonging to the Nayanbashi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT.

  • June 1: Two NLFT cadres, including an 'area commander' identified as Chaitra Sadhan Jamatya and Sampad Tripura, who have left their hideout at Sajek range in Bangladesh, surrender before the Superintendent of Police (Intelligence) at Agartala, the State capital. They also deposit two AK series rifles, four magazines and 140 rounds of AK rifles.

  • May 7: A NLFT cadre, Dharmaram Reang, of the Biswamohan Debbarma faction is arrested in a search operation from Jirania police station area in the West Tripura district.

  • May 1: A militant collaborator, Balin Halam, is arrested at Champaraipara under Ganganagar police station for his involvement in the April-29 ambush by the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT on SFs.

  • April 30: A SF personnel, who was wounded in the April-29 ambush by the Biswamohan Debbarma faction of the NLFT in the Dhalai district, succumbs to his injury, increasing the number of fatalities in the incident to five.

  • April 29: NLFT cadres kill three SF personnel and injure eight civilians in an ambush at Karnamuni para under Gandacherra sub-division in the Dhalai district. NLFT militant, Paitya Debbarma, was killed as security forces retaliated.

  • April 28: Three NLFT cadres, Ajit Debbarma, his wife Raitaki Malsam and Milan Jamatia, surrendered at Thalcherra village under Chawmanu police station in the Dhalai district. The three, who managed to escape from the outfit's hideout at Khagracherra in Bangladesh along with their two-year old baby, deposited one revolver along with some bullets.

  • April 24: NLFT cadres kill a truck driver, Ratan Roy, and wounded four others at Unish Mile along the Ambassa-Gandacherra road under Ganganagar police station in the Dhalai district following the withdrawal of the CRPF personnel who reportedly used to escort the vehicles.

    Two NLFT cadres, Nityabahadur Malsum and Baganbahadur Malsum, surrender before the Sub Divisional Police Officer Pinaki Samanta at Udaipur, headquarters of the South Tripura district. They also deposited one .9-mm pistol and one Chinese grenade.

  • April 22: Seven NLFT cadres belonging to its Biswamohan Debbarma faction surrender at Kanchanpur in the North Tripura district along with two country-made guns, three country-made revolvers with ammunition and some incriminating documents of the banned outfit.

  • April 18: An over-ground agent, British Debbarma, of the banned NLFT belonging to its Biswamohan Debbarma faction is arrested from Bhangshibari under Champahaur police station in the West Tripura district for his involvement in extortion activities.

    A NLFT collaborator belonging to its Biswamohan Debbarma faction is arrested following an encounter between NLFT cadres and the police at Manirampara under Ambassa police station in the Dhalai district. The arrested collaborator confesses, "Ultras are planning to launch fresh attack in some specific areas to create panic among the villagers." According to intelligence sources, two groups of the outlawed outfit have been moving around Dhomacherra in the Longhthorai Valley subdivision of the same district.

  • April 10: The Tripura Chief Minister, Manik Sarkar, who holds the Home portfolio, informs the Legislative Assembly that at least 458 militants belonging to the NLFT and ATTF have surrendered in the last two years with the respective surrender figures of 2004 and 2005 as 322 and 136.

  • April 2: The Tripura Government is decides to set up a new rehabilitation centre at Karamcherra in the Dhalai district to accommodate at least 217 surrendered militants, mostly belonging to the NLFT. Currently, 175 surrendered militants are being imparted training in two vocational centres. They are paid Rupees 2,000 each as stipend besides Rupees 50 each for dearness allowance.

  • March 26: A NLFT cadre belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction is arrested from Thakurgangapara under Takarjala police station in the West Tripura district.

  • March 22: A gang of newly trained 36 NLFT cadres infiltrate from Bangladesh into Tripura through Kamalasagar area under Bishalgarh subdivision in the West Tripura district. "All the 36 militants returned through West Tripura's border with Bangladesh early yesterday morning," said official sources. Reports added that that they were trained at Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh.

  • February 21: A TSR personnel, Lamento Soren, who is wounded in the February 20-attack by suspected NLFT cadres at Jeolcherra in the West Tripura district succumbs to his injury in a hospital.

  • February 16: Two NLFT collaborators, identified as Rajkumar Debbarma and Sukhumar Debbarma, belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction were arrested from a place under Teliamura police station in the West Tripura district.

  • February 16: The GAIL suspends work of deep drilling in the interior parts of Atharamura Hill in the West Tripura district till February 20 due to the February 14-attack by the NLFT in which three workers were killed. At least 200 workers were withdrawn from the work sites fearing more attacks.

  • February 15: Two TSR personnel, Chinmoy Das and Sushanta Reang, are wounded in an ambush by NLFT cadres at Baluwa under Sidhai police station in the West Tripura district.

  • January 23: The leader of the Nayanbasi Jamatiya faction of NLFT, Ha-Sa-Magi Angel Mikhail Borok, complains to the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil about the non-implementation of the tripartite agreement reached between the Centre, Tripura Government and the outfit in December 2004.

  • January 22: In a counter insurgency operation, personnel of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) neutralize a NLFT hideout at Tailingbari under Amarpur subdivision in the South Tripura district. One wireless set, 25 kilograms of rice and some incriminating documents are recovered from the hideout.

  • December 31: Tripura Government asks the ‘chief’ of the Nayanbashi Jamatiya faction of the NLFT, Nayanbashi Jamatia , to immediately surrender or face consequences.

  • December 28: Suspected NLFT militants belonging to the Biswamohan Debbarma faction kill at least 16 Territorial Army personnel and wound three others during an ambush at Agumabari in the South Tripura district. The incident occurs when the Army personnel, moving in two vehicles from Kouyamura to Dangabari, are attacked by a 50-member NLFT squad with grenades and indiscriminate firing. They also later loot 15 AK-series rifles and one light machine gun from the slain soldiers. As the militants are escaping, one of the injured soldiers reportedly opens retaliatory fire killing at least one militant.

  • December 25: Around 138 NLFT cadres belonging to the Nayanbashi Jamatiya faction surrender before the Tripura Governor, D.N. Sahay, at the State Police Training Centre in capital Agartala. The militants, including senior leaders Bartholomew Borok, Buchuk Borok, Ananta Debbarma, Salka Borok and Daniel Borok, also lay down 14 weapons. With the surrender, altogether 312 terrorists have laid down arms this year in Tripura.
