January 3

The CTD officials of Hazara Division arrested two TTP terrorists, Muhammad Nawaz alias Abrash and Azizullah alias Hazaza, from Batagaram District of KP. Both the terrorists are said to have received militant training in Kunar area in Afghanistan. Nawaz and Azizullah were involved in a number of terrorism incidents in the past and were also found plotting an attack in the Batagaram region at the time of their arrest. CTD officials said the two men revealed major terrorism plots in Batagaram District during their initial interrogation. A video clip of DPO Batagaram was also recovered from their possession.

January 15

TTP 'commander' Asad Mansoor of the Hakimullah Mehsud group surrendered to the SFs in Dera Ismail Khan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The name of the surrendered 'commander' resembles that of the spokesperson of the TTP's breakaway faction JuA, Asad Mansoor, but he has sent an email to media outlets denying that he had laid down arms, while an (unnamed) official says that he had surrendered three weeks back.

January 22

A grade 12th student, Fahim Ashraf, at Islamia College in Charsadda District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa shot his college principal, Sareer Khan, dead after being censured for skipping school to attend the November 2017 sit-in of religio-political parties in Faizabad area of Federal capital Islamabad. In a video acquired by Dawn, the student, while being arrested, appeared to justify the murder saying he believed the college principal had committed blasphemy. "I have been taught... to kill... to not be afraid. Don't be afraid of disrespecting the one who" commits blasphemy, the student can be heard saying in the video in Pashto. "You can kill me," he tells the arresting officers. Police said the principal Sareer Khan had earlier expressed his anger at Faheem over his being absent from college for three days. Fahim Ashraf had been angry that he was marked absent during the days he was attending the Faizabad sit-in.

January 23

At least three Haqqani network militants were killed in a drone strike at a house in Speen Thal area of Hangu District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The deaths were also confirmed by SHO of Thal Police Station, Ameer Zaman.

February 3

Eleven Pakistani Army soldiers were killed and 13 wounded in a suicide bombing near a Pakistani Army camp in Kabal area in Swat District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. TTP has claimed responsibility for the attack. According to reports, the suicide bomber blew himself up in a ground where soldiers were playing volleyball.

February 4

JI local leader Malik Tufail was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Mughalkhel area of Bannu District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Tufail was killed when unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at him in Mughalkhel area. The suspects escaped from the site after the incident.

February 9

Life in KP's Mardan District came to a halt, as thousands of workers and supporters of religious parties took to roads to pressure the Government into releasing the 31 men convicted in the murder of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan student Mashal Khan, who was lynched in April 13, 2017, after being falsely accused of blasphemy. Thousands of members of the Tahaffuz Khatm-i-Nabuwat Organisation, JI and JUI-F joined by locals participated in the protest that began at Pakistan Chowk after Friday prayers. Holding banners that read "Mashalyon, stop us if you can!". the protesters chanted slogans against Mashal and the Government. The demonstration led by Tahaffuz Khatm-i-Nabuwat leader Qari Ikramul Haq demanded that the men convicted for the murder be released. Several of the men acquitted by the court, including Ajmal Mayar, attended the rally and were given a "Ghazi welcome". The rally was scheduled to march from Pakistan Chowk to College Chowk, but concluded earlier at Katlang Chowk after a dua for those acquitted.

February 10

The KP's CTD arrested a facilitator of the terror attack on Peshawar's Agricultural Directorate. According to CTD, the man identified as Muhammad Yasir was taken into custody near Larma camp in Peshawar and belongs to Bajaur Agency. The arrested suspect has been shifted to undisclosed location and is being interrogated. On December 1, 2017, terrorists attacked the Peshawar's Agricultural Directorate in which nine people were killed and thirty eight others injured.

February 23

A motorcycle containing IED exploded and injured three civilians including a Government official at Dir Colony on Peshawar's Ring Road. The injured civilians were identified as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Provincial Disaster Management Authority Deputy Director Muhammad Shakeel, Latif, (29) and Wadan Gul (47). TTP's Jama'atul Ahrar faction claimed responsibility for the attack.

March 17

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government launched a crackdown against Hafiz Saeed-led JuD and its humanitarian wing, FIF, by seizing control of their offices and financial assets. The crackdown by the district administration of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was carried out following directions from the Federal Government. The action came despite March 16's order by the Lahore high court directing the Federal Ministry of Interior to explain by March 29 the reasons why it had seized the offices and assets of JuD and FIF. "We have sealed the offices of the foundation, seized three religious schools and two mosques and handed over the seized properties to the Evacuee Trust Property Board to look after its operational matters," said Senior Police Officer Wasim Riaz said.

March 28

Two persons, including a transgender, were killed when unidentified motorcyclists opened fire at them on Ring Road in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the Police, the transgender person Daniyal alias Chutki and an accompanying friend Aizaz were travelling in a rickshaw when the unidentified assailants targeted them at Ring Road on route to Patang Chowk from Iqbal Plaza.

Unidentified assailants took away a tribal journalist from his house at gunpoint from his house in Tank District. The journalist, Shah Zaman Mehsud, belongs to South Waziristan Agency of FATA, but he is residing in Tank District along with his family. His brother Ismail Mehsud said that unknown persons dressed in plain clothes knocked at the door of their house on Tuesday night. He said that five armed men entered the house and started dragging his brother. "All the unidentified persons were carrying guns," said Ismail Mehsud. Sources said that Shah Zaman was "abducted" about six months ago and remained in the captivity of unknown persons.

March 30

At least three Policemen were killed and four others sustained injuries when the convoy of DPO Zahidullah came under bomb attack on the Hathala Road area of Kolachi tehsil in Dera Ismail Khan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Fortunately, DPO Zahidullah survived the incident unscathed.

April 25

The Peshawar High Court wrapping up a petition submitted by the father of an APS attack victim, ordered that former JuA and TTP 'spokesman' Ehsanullah Ehsan remain imprisoned while he is undergoing trial. In the petition, the victim Fazal Khan's father had asked the court in 2017 to ensure that Ehsan is not pardoned as he had claimed responsibility for the 2014 attack on Peshawar's APS in which at least 144 people, mostly children, were killed. Ehsan, a TTP spokesperson until 2014, joined the splinter group JuA following a split in the TTP. The Army in April 2017 announced his surrender to Security Forces and released a 'confession video' of Ehsan in which he claimed that terrorist organisations were being "used" by India and Afghanistan.

May 3

Three SF personnel were injured in an IED blast in Jani Khel area of Bannu District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The SF personnel were on a patrol duty when their vehicle hit the IED.

May 11

One Policeman was killed and 13 others were injured in an IED blast at the General Bus Stand in Bannu town (Bannu District) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The device, apparently planted in a motorcycle, exploded when a Police patrol passed by the bus terminal. The Police van and other cars parked in the area were damaged due to the impact of the blast.

May 17 One person was killed and 14 others injured in VBIED attack conducted by one militant attacked targeting a FC vehicle carrying six Personnel, including one Officer, on Mall Road near Katchehri Chowk in Nowshera District in KP.

May 29

A social activist and prominent member of the Sikh community, Charnjeet Singh, was shot dead in a suspected target killing incident in the Scheme Chowk area on Kohat Road within the limits of Inquilab Police Station in Peshawar, the provincial capital of KP. According to SSP, Operations, Javed Iqbal Wazir said the incident occurred in the Scheme Chowk area when unidentified men opened fire at Charnjeet Singh who was on his way home from his shop. Charnjeet Singh died on the spot while the attackers managed to escape.

A Police constable Hayatullah Khan was shot dead by unidentified militants riding a motorcycle on the Circular Road East near the Sate Life building in Dera Ismail Khan town of same District. According to reports, constable Hayatullah Khan, who was on a routine patrol on his bike on the Circular Road when two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on him. As a result, he got serious bullet wounds and was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

May 30 The KP Government expressed concerns over strengthening of IS group in the border areas of Afghanistan and termed its activities an indicator of unrest in the region. However, the provincial authorities claimed that the security situation in KP was satisfactory. According to sources, the concern about strengthening of IS on the border areas was shown by KP IGP Salahuddin Mehsud Khan during a briefing to the NACTA in Islamabad. NACTA has already intimated to the Government that JuA, IS and TTP have been a serious threat to security of the country.
June 7 An explosion targeting a Police van on patrol in the Maidan Circle area near Sara Panra in Lower Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa claimed the lives of a SHO, the vehicle's driver, and a passerby. It appeared to have targeted a Zimdara Police Station van, which was on patrol at the time, DSP Rehmatullah said. The blast was caused by an IED. Zimdara SHO Bakht Munir Khan and his driver Irfan were killed, while one FC official identified as Hazrat, a gunner to the SHO, was injured. The blast also wounded some passers-by.
June 8

PTI councilor Rehman Afzal survived a firing incident in the night when unidentified assailants on motorcycle opened fire on him in Amin Colony of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A man was wounded after an unidentified gunman opened fire in a mosque in Shaheed Abad locality of Peshawar.

* The Government of Pakistan passed the bill in the National Assembly on April 15, 2010 that changed the name of North West Frontier Province to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
