At least 24 people, including an Indonesian national, were killed in an arson attack by unidentified individuals at Jabir Hotel in Jessore District of Khulna Division, during celebrations after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed's resignation, reports Dhaka Tribune on August 6.The hotel was owned by Sahin Chakladar, general secretary of the Jessore District Awami League, and two of the deceased were identified as Chayan and Sejan Hossain.
On August 6, a total of 2,400 people, including several top leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), got bail in cases filed with different police stations in the capital over the violence centring the quota reform protests, reports The Daily Star. BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, JeI Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, Bangladesh Jatiyo Party (Manju) Chairman Andaleeve Rahman Partho and Ducsu former vice-president Nurul Haque Nur were among them.The 2,400 were produced before the court between July 17 and August 4 after being arrested in some 178 cases.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin agreed to appoint Mohammad Yunus (Nobel Laureate) as the head of an interim government, reports The Daily Star on August 7. However, the government has yet to materialise as the country continues to struggle for the second day. Nahid Islam, a key protest organizer, said that during a four-hour meeting at the Bangabhaban that extended past midnight on August 6, they created a list of 10 to 15 people to assist Yunus in running the interim government. "The list will be finalised after discussions with political parties," he added.
On August 6, gunshots were reported in the Pathi Nalla Khaned area of Basantgarh region in Udhampur District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), reports Daily Excelsior. Security Forces established contact with a group of terrorists in the higher reaches of the district. No casualties have been reported.
Border Security Force (BSF) stated on X that one drone (China-made DJI AIR-3) and a packet of suspected heroin (547 grams) were recovered in Kalia village in Tarn Taran District of Punjab. The narcotics were wrapped in red and yellow adhesive tape and attached to the drone with a metal ring. An illuminating stick was also found attached to the packet.
Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as woman cadre Somdi Madkam (24), an active member of `Vistaar platoon no. 2' in the 'Madhya Pradesh-Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh (MMC) zonal committee' of the Maoists, and Madkma Sona (36), a member of platoon no. 1 of ‘Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division’, surrendered in Sukma District in the Bastar division of Chhattisgarh on August 6, reports The Week. The duos were carrying a reward of INR 200,000 each on their heads, an official release said. The two turned themselves in before senior Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials in Sukma, stating that they were disappointed by the atrocities committed on local tribals by senior Maoists and the "inhuman" and "hollow" Maoist ideology, the statement said.
On August 6, National Investigation Agency (NIA) chargesheeted four accused identified as, Jameel Basha, Mohammad Hussain, Irshath and Syed Abdur Rahman, in Islamic State (IS) radicalisation and recruitment case, as an offshoot of the 2022 Coimbatore temple car bomb blast case in Tamil Nadu, reports NIA. The investigation of the case by NIA revealed that the majority of the accused arrested in the case were engaged in the recruitment of gullible youth to the IS fold for commission of unlawful and terrorist activities. The religious school indoctrination was carried out by the accused at an Arabic language centre called Madras Arabic College at Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, later rechristened as Kovai ArabicCollege. The Arabic language centre at Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) was set up by Mohammed Hussain and Irshath under the guidance of their patron and chief mentor, Jameel Basha. The accused used social media and classroom sessions to radicalise youths in the centre. Amongst the accused chargesheeted, Syed Abdur Rahman, radicalised the deceased accused, Jamesha Mubeen, who carried out the vehicle-borne Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast outside the Coimbatore temple as part of anti-India campaign of IS and had pledged his allegiance to Darul-e-Islam/IS.
Nityanand Rai, Minister of State (MoS), Union Ministry of Home Affairs (UMHA), in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament), informed that there has been considerable reduction in “disturbed areas” under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958 and that the application of this Act has been removed from most parts of the North Eastern States since 2014, reports pib.gov.in on August 6. In the reply, he mentioned that AFSPA, 1958 was withdrawn completely from Tripura with effect from May 27, 2015, and Meghalaya with effect from April 1, 2018. However, in Assam, it is completely withdrawn from all the Districts except for four Districts. In Arunachal Pradesh, it is applicable in three Police station areas in Namsai District and three other Districts (Tirap, Changlang and Longding). In Manipur, it is withdrawn from 19 Police station areas in seven Districts and, in Nagaland, it is applicable in eight Districts and 21 Police station areas in five Districts. The statement also included the improvement in the security situation in North East since 2014, with 71 per cent reduction in insurgency-related incidents, 60 per cent decrease in the number of fatalities of Security Forces (SFs) and 82 per cent decrease in civilian fatalities in 2023 compared to 2014.
Street crimes in Karachi witnessed 11per cent surge in 2023, revealed the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) report, ARY News reported on August 6. The report stated that Karachi witnessed over 90,000 street crimes in 2023 as compared to 80,000 in 2022, showing 11 per cent increase. The HRCP report stated that 134 citizens were killed during resisting robberies and other incidents in 2023 while hundred were injured. Over 59,000 motorbikes and 2,336 vehicles were also snatched from the citizens in 2023, the report added. The HRCP also expressed concerns on overall law and order situation of Sindh province and stated 3,296 police encounters were carried out last year, which is the highest number of police encounters in a year in Sindh.
