A Sri Lankan Court on July 9 rejected prosecution demands to prosecute Police Inspector General (IG) Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando to face murder charges for failing to prevent Easter Sunday Bombings, reports The Island. They were arrested the previous week on charges of negligence of duty. Another nine senior officers have also been named by the attorney general as suspects who should be prosecuted for security lapses over the attacks.
Separately, leader of the House and Public Enterprise Minister Lakshman Kiriella told Parliament on July 8 that President Maithripala Sirisena would have to come before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing the Easter Sunday terror attacks, reports The Island. He stated that “I have pointed out many times in this assembly that the PSC has powers to summon persons of any rank, be it the Prime Minister or the President of the country.”
