The Maldives President Abdulla Yameen on July 10 has said that the European Union (EU) warned the Island nation to impose sanctions this month [July], reports Maldives Independent. The EU and the Maldives had been disagreed over the erosions of the rights in the Maldives and crackdown of the opposition parties. The EU has expressed its concerns that the upcoming Presidential elections in the Maldives in September would not be free or fair. “It is possible that the EU will impose sanctions sometime in the middle of this month [July]. Our government has been warned. We [Maldives] are discussing with EU officials to solve this. But it is not easy to convince people who have already made up their minds,” said President Yameen to Dhiggaru Islanders while on a campaign trip to Meemu Atoll
