On July 28, unidentified miscreants have destroyed the railway track near Mohammadpur railway station and Ramnathpur railway station in Hailakandi District in Assam amid the ongoing border dispute between Assam and Mizoram. According to Mizoram Home Secretary Lalbiaksangi, due to this damage, the only railway track connecting the Bairabi railway station in Mizoram was blocked. In a letter to the Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Lalbiaksangi alleged that Assam has blocked National Highway – 306 and other road connecting Mizoram with the rest of the country and with the help of miscreants destroyed the railway track, ‘blocking the only alternate route for entry of goods and supplies into the state’ and causing an economic blockade. Earlier on July 27, Assam Chief Minister (CM), Himanta Biswa Sarma, had claimed that Mizoram Police had opened fire with light machine guns (LMGs) during the clashes.
Six Assam Police Personnel were killed and more than 65 injured in a violent clash with Mizoram police and residents of the neighbouring state at Lailapur in Cachar District of Assam along the inter-state border on July 26. One civilian was also killed in the clashes.
