Foreign Relations, Skills Development, Employment and Labour Relations Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on February 24 said that he and his delegation are ready to answer any question and allegation regarding human rights and accountability issues in the final days of the ongoing sessions at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, reports Daily News. He further said co-sponsoring the resolution 40 of March 2019 on Sri Lanka at UNHRC contravene, the Constitution of Sri Lanka and also against the interests of the people of Sri Lanka. Therefore, the Government expects to withdraw the co-sponsoring of the resolution.
Meanwhile, Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) leader M.A Sumanthiran while addressing the media after the ITAK Central Committee Meeting held at Arivaham in Kilinochchi on February 24 said that even if the Sri Lanka Government exited from the UN resolution, the UN should urge the Sri Lanka Government to implement the decisions taken at the UNHRC,reports Daily Mirror. “It was well-known that Sri Lanka would exit from the co-sponsorship, however, we are closely monitoring the Government’s activities after the regime change. The ITAK vehemently condemns Sri Lanka violating the decision taken by the UNHRC,” Sumanthiran said.
