In the wake of January 20's attack on luxury Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul carried out by the Afghan Taliban, the United States (US) on January 22 called on Pakistan to take action against the militant group's leaders, reports Dawn. At least 18 people were killed when Afghan Taliban militants stormed the Hotel. The siege had continued overnight as Afghan security forces battled the terrorists. Addressing a press briefing, press secretary Sarah Sanders said that the attack against civilians would only serve to strengthen Washington's resolve in working with its Afghan partners. Commending the "swift action" taken by the Afghan security forces at the time of the attack, Sanders added: "Afghanistan forces, with our support, will continue to relentlessly pursue the enemies of Afghanistan who also seek to export terror around the world." "We call on Pakistan to immediately arrest or expel the Taliban's leaders," Sanders said, adding that Pakistan should "prevent the group from using Pakistani territory to support its operations".

Statistics by the United States (US) Air Force show that 4,300 bombes have been dropped in Afghanistan in 2017, targeting Taliban and other terrorist groups in parts of the country, reports TOLO News on January 26. According to the US Air Force figures, the number of air-strikes in 2017 was twice than of those carried out in the past two years – 2015 and 2016. Resolute Support Mission (RS) Public Affairs Director Thomas Gresback said that air-strikes are up significantly in 2017 primarily due to the South Asia policy which President Trump has signed and allowing us to go after both the Taliban and ISSK (Daesh) where they are. It is going to allow us to pursue them. The rules of engagement are now different”.

The United States (US) Deputy Secretary of State John J. Sullivan briefing reporters on his visit to Afghanistan on January 30 said that all militant groups in Afghanistan are ready to the join peace process except the Taliban, reports Tolo News. “While in Kabul, I had the opportunity to meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani and other Government leaders. During each of these meetings, Afghanistan's leadership made it clear to me that despite the recent tragic events, the Afghan Government will continue to work to create the necessary conditions to bring the Taliban to the negotiating table and establish an environment for a sustained peace.... Unfortunately, at this stage everyone but the Taliban appears ready for peace. The Taliban's reprehensible attacks targeting innocent civilians demonstrate that they are not ready to enter into good faith peace negotiations,” said Sullivan.
