Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that United States (US) and Afghan Government were not adequately investigating possibly unlawful air-strikes in Afghanistan, which may contribute to rising civilian casualties, reports Tolo News on May 18. Recent accounts from air-strike victims and witnesses in Nangarhar and other Afghan Provinces uncovered major failings in US and Afghan investigations of civilian deaths, injuries, and property damage, notably the unwillingness to interview witnesses and obtain other evidence on site, HRW said in a statement. HRW added that US forces have downsized their civilian casualties tracking mechanisms and never conduct on-site investigations after attacks resulting in civilian casualties, relying instead on visual and satellite imagery and unreliable Afghan Security Force reports.

50 ‘senior’ Taliban militants were killed in last week ground strike conducted by United States (US) in the Nad Ali District of Helmand Province on an unspecified date in May, reports Pajhwok Afghan News. Lt. Col. Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition in Afghanistan, said a weapon system known as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) which is capable of firing GPS-guided rockets, destroyed a command-and-control position that was a known meeting place for high-level Taliban leaders. However, Taliban ‘spokesman’ Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claims that the strike targeted two houses in Mosa Qala District, leaving five civilians dead and three others wounded.

States (US) Department of State in its annual 2017 Report on International Religious Freedom said that in recent years, a series of deadly attacks were conducted on the Shia community in Afghanistan, reports Tolo News on May 30. Majority of attacks were carried out by Islamic State (IS). “During the last year, Shia Muslims, especially ethnic Hazaras, fell victim to multiple violent and deadly attacks, as well as abductions that often ended in death. The attacks were overwhelmingly claimed by or attributed to US-designated terrorist groups, including the Taliban and ISIS (Daesh). Reportedly, more than 500 members of the Shia community were injured or killed between July and November 2016. There continue to be allegations that the government failed to provide adequate security in majority-Shia areas,” an excerpt from the report says. Over 150 Afghan Shias were killed and two hundred others were wounded as a result of attacks by IS in 2017.
