According to the source, there is acknowledgement that the killing of the Iranian elite force commander General Qassem Soleimani will certainly have an impact on the peace talks between the US and the Taliban, but the group does not want to be hated by the people of Afghanistan for fighting on someone else’s behalf. Sources close to the Taliban said that Iran has an influence on the Taliban faction of Mullah Akhtar Mansour, which is mostly stationed in the western and southern parts of Afghanistan.

President Ashraf Ghani on January 6 met with the family of Amer Abdul Sattar, a former Mujahideen leader, who was killed on January 5 in a National Directorate of Security (NDS) operation in Kabul, reports Tolo News. Elders from the provinces of Kapisa, Panjshir and Parwan were also present at the meeting in which Ghani extended his condolences to Amer Abdul Sattar’s family and ordered an investigation into the incident that occurred on January 5. Amer Abdul Sattar was a former mujahideen leader who was killed with four others in an operation by the NDS special unit in the north of Kabul.

Dozens of weapons were recovered in a clearing operation conducted by security troops on Taliban hideout in parts of Saydabad District in Maidan Wardak Province of Afghanistan on January 31, reports Bakhtar News. Security official of Maidan Wardak said, the weapons have been seized in Salar and Tangi Qala regions, Saydabad District. Most of these weapons are bombs and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and cannonballs. No one has been arrested in connection of the case.

Eleven armed Taliban militants were killed and number of others have been injured in air and ground raids of Afghan Security Forces (ASF) on Taliban hideout in various parts of Lashkargah city in Lashkargah District and Nahersaraj District of Helmand Province of Afghanistan on January 31, reports Bakhtar News. Atal army corps medias office in south of the country with releasing a statement said, three local ‘commanders’ of Taliban outfit with their eight cadres were killed. Four hideouts of Taliban with all war equipment have been destroyed, said the statement. Another report says, two weapons caches kept on hideouts of Taliban in Kajaki District and suburb of Lashkargah city in Lashkargah District were also demolished.

Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), in its latest report, records marked increase in violent attacks in Afghanistan in the last quarter of 2019 compared with previous years, report Al Jazeera. According to a SIGAR report released on January 31, 2020; there were 8,204 attacks between October and December 2019 - up from 6,974 in the same period in 2018. "A turbulent last six months resulted in increases in overall enemy attacks [6 percent] and effective attacks [4 percent] in 2019 compared to the already high levels reported in 2018," SIGAR said in its quarterly report to the US Congress. Thirty-seven percent of the attacks resulted in people being killed or injured, the report said.
