A Village Defence Committee (VDC) member was shot dead by three unidentified terrorists at Thuru in the Mahore area of Udhampur district on the same day. The terrorists escaped after the killing. In another incident, suspected Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) terrorists shot dead a youth and injured his brother at Marhot in the Surankote area of Poonch district. Separately in Mahore, another group of terrorists set ablaze four houses of surrendered terrorists, who had reportedly renounced violence last month. However, there was no casualty in this incident.

Chandrababu Naidu survived an assassination attempt on October 1 when suspected People's War Group (PWG) Naxalites (left-wing extremists) exploded at least five improvised claymore mines targeting his motorcade on the Tirumala ghat road in Chittoor district at 4.15 p.m, while he was proceeding to visit the Tirumala temple. He is reported to have suffered minor injuries. Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have indicated that the driver of the Chief Minister’s car has succumbed to his injuries. Among the others injured included the Puttur MLA (Member of State Legislative Assembly), R. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Tirupati MLA, Chadalavada Krishnamurthy and the Information Technology Minister B. Gopalakrishna Reddy.

Chandrababu Naidu on October 1 at Tirumala town in Chittoor district. Meanwhile, reports confirming the involvement of the People’s War Group (PWG) in the attack, said that top Naxalite (left-wing extremists) leaders Patel Sudhakar Reddy, Satyam, Sakhamuri Appa Rao and eight others were assigned the task of planning the ambush. Security forces foiled the first Fidayeen (suicide squad) attack on the official residence of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on Maulana Azad Road in capital Srinagar on October 17. Even as two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were killed and 10 persons, including three photojournalists, sustained injuries, both the terrorists took shelter in the nearby Dr Ali Jan Shopping Plaza. Security forces have launched an operation to eliminate the terrorists inside the 4-storey shopping complex after evacuating 25 civilians from the area. Director General of Police Gopal Sharma said that two heavily armed terrorists had lobbed hand grenades and fired from AK-47 rifles on some BSF personnel, who were on duty at the entrance of the shopping complex, at about 10 AM. Two BSF soldiers died on spot and the terrorists reportedly rushed into the shopping complex where they are holed up till last reports came in. The Chief Minister’s residence is 50 metres away from the Ali Jan Plaza. While the Chief Minister was in Uttar Pradesh on a scheduled visit to Aligarh, his daughter and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti was present at the residence along with other members of the family.

Six persons, including two SF personnel, two civilians and two terrorists, were killed while nine others, including five SF personnel and four civilians, were injured in these attacks. A suspected harbourer of the terrorists has reportedly been arrested while one terrorist was captured in an injured condition. Official sources said that after causing the derailment of Shalimar Express train at Jatwal, the terrorists covered a distance of more than 70 kilometers, hijacking two vehicles, killing two civilians and injuring four others on the national highway covering a minimum of 14 permanent police posts from Jatwal to Akhnoor Bridge. The security forces maintained a cordon around Akhnoor Bridge in the early hours of October 27 after intercepting the terrorists the previous night. In an early morning operation, two of the terrorists were killed while the third was arrested in an injured condition. Two AK-47 rifles, four used magazines and 140 AK rounds were recovered from the slain terrorists.

The district court in Alexandria in Virginia state sentenced Faris after a Federal Judge rejected his attempt to withdraw his guilty plea on the plot.
