He was responding the news reporters questions on news reports that carried a statement of Paresh Baruah, the ULFA chief, to hold ‘meaningful and scientific’ talks with the Government. On January 3, in an interview to The Telegraph, the ‘commander-in-chief’ of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Paresh Barua, said bloodbath in the State would cease only if the Union government agreed to a ‘scientific dialogue’ with the outfit. Baruah demanded ‘Assam’s independence’ through a ‘logical and reasonable’ talk. He claimed responsibility for the January 2-killing of three SULFA men including, Abinash Bordoloi, in Nalbari. He said it was a ‘vendetta strike’ against his former comrades. Three members of the Surrendered United Liberation Front of Asom (SULFA) were killed in an ambush by ULFA terrorists. The dead included Avinash Bordoloi, a prominent ULFA member who had surrendered along with another ULFA leader Lohit Deuri in August 2000.

According to delayed reports, seven persons, including three non-Manipuris, were killed at different places in Manipur between January 3 and January 7. Three non-Manipuris, employees of the National Project Construction Corporation, were killed at Singda in Imphal West district on January 5. Police sources said that the deceased had recently been asked to provide 'donations' to unidentified terrorists which they had reportedly failed to give. Police sources added that in the year 2000 over 15 non-Manipuris, mostly businessmen, were killed in the State.
