A seven-year-old girl of Manipur was shot dead while her mother sustained injuries when suspected Karbi terrorists fired at their vehicle with sophisticated weapons near Deopani in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam on June 1. According to Assam Tribune, Mangaleima, daughter of Prof. Y Jayachandra of Central Agriculture University in Manipur, was traveling with her parents when suspected Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) cadres fired at their vehicle. The girl succumbed to injuries while en route to Dimapur for treatment.

According to Assam tribune, Arabinda Rajkhowa, ‘chairman’ of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), has "appealed" to the U.S. President George W Bush to use American influence in bringing about a satisfactory solution to the ‘Assam-India’ conflict. Rajkhowa, in a letter addressed to the American President, dated May 11, 2005, drew his attention towards what he termed as an armed conflict between Assam and India where 10,000 precious lives had been lost. He reportedly claimed that people of Assam were being subjugated and that Assam was never a part of India.

According to Assam Tribune, the Union government has asked the Mizoram Government to take action against the Chin militant outfits operating in the State. According to the report, Union Ministry of Home Affairs officials have held meetings with the Mizoram Government and have urged action against an estimated 150 Chin National Front militants settled in and around a camp, code named ‘Victoria Camp’, located few kilometres inside Mizoram across the Myanmar border. Assam Rifles authorities have also been asked to step in and provide assistance to the State Government in clearing the camp.

On June 2, documents relating to the activities of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) were recovered from an abandoned house along with four bullets, the outfit’s constitution, manifesto and extortion notes, subsequent to an encounter at Moolaber in the Jaintia Hills. Official sources said that these documents indicated the formation of the NDFB’s ‘Khasi Hills Command’ to expand its activities in Shillong and the adjoining areas under the leadership of ‘Sergeant Major’ B Gaukhrub.

Thanga’s interrogation led to the arrest of a Mizoram Armed Police personnel who had supplied the gun in return for a sum of Rupees 50,000. On June 3, the Assam Rifles (AR) authorities said that they have asked the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) to close its newly opened camp at Marao village of Ukhrul district in Manipur. Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), Maj. Gen. B.S. Ghotra, said, "Yes, we are opposing the setting up of the camp there. We told them to leave immediately. We will not allow any rebel group to run open camps." According to reports, the camp was set up in the month of May and since has been cordoned off by 600 AR personnel who accuse the outfit of extending support to other militant groups. The NSCN-IM cadres have so far refused to leave without orders from their ‘higher authority’.

On June 3, the Border Security Force (BSF) Inspector-General of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland region, S C Srivastava, said at a news conference in Shillong that leaders of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) are running seven hotels in different locations in Bangladesh. While the Surma International, Hotel Mohammadia and Hotel Padma International are located in Dhaka, Hotel Keya International and Hotel Yamuna are at Sylhet and Hotel Basundhara and Hotel Raj King are located in Chittagong. Managers of all these hotels are cadres of the outfit. Further, ULFA also operates three bank accounts in the Arab Bangladesh Bank's Farm Gate branch in Dhaka and Zinda Bazaar branch in Sylhet and Al-Barakah Bank's Pahartali branch in Chittagong.

Basiawmoit in his efforts to bring the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to the negotiating table.
