Security agencies refused to allow family of ‘commander-in-chief’ of ULFA-ATF, Paresh Baruah to India from Bangladesh. Baruah fled the neighbouring country months before the top ULFA leaders, including ‘Chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa, were held and sent back to India in November 2009. An official said that we know that his wife and children are in Dhaka. But we do not want to see them deported to India. Once they are back home, Baruah will be a relieved man. He certainly will not like his family to live a life of uncertainty in a foreign country. And we believe this will keep him under pressure.

Two powerful explosions went off one after another in the residential compound of the Former United Naga Council (UNC) speaker Simthi Ruivah in Ukhrul District of Manipur on June 5, reports Kanglaonline. Simthi Ruivah is currently a member of Tangkhul Co-ordination Committee (TCC), which was formed by the Tangkhul Naga frontal organisations in the aftermath of Manipur Government’s decision to bar National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) General Secretary Th. Muivah’s visit to Somdal last year. Meanwhile, Nagaland Post reports that Security agencies feel that June 5 incident could be linked to the recent diktak issued by Manipur Naga Revolutionary Front (MNRF), a splintered group of NSCN-IM. Chairman of National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), S.S. Khaplang, was impeached and expelled for his alleged dictatorial leadership on June 7. Khaplang was expelled during a meeting of militant leaders loyal to ‘general secretary’ N. Kitovi Zhimomi at the Khehoi designated camp near Dimapur, thereby creating two factions of the outfit — one led by Khaplang and the other by Zhimomi and Khole. Khole, commander-in-chief of the group, was elected its acting chairman. The group said Khehoi camp would be designated as the council headquarters. Sources also said some of the top leaders from the Konyak community did not attend meeting. Naga organisations were optimistic that the split would not hamper the ongoing reconciliation process among the militant outfits.

UNLF chairman RK Meghen on June 9, urged all to shun culture of extortion and start earning their own livelihood instead of draining the public, reports Sangai Express. Speaking to reporters after being produced before a special court by the NIA in Guwahati, the militant leader said that serving extortion notices and lobbing bombs, opening fire and threatening the public, in case the demand is not met is not a healthy trend for the future of the land and the people. On the announcement of the Chief Minister daring the militants to come forward and take part in the election process to see whether they enjoy the support of the people or not, Meghen said that the plebiscite model mooted by the UNLF is akin to what the Chief Minister said. The UNLF leader said, “We welcome the Chief Minister's challenge to see whether the public support the militants or not” and added that the UNLF will respect the mandate of the people in any forum held under the supervision of the United Nations. Deploying a large number of security forces and asking the people to come out and vote in an atmosphere of fear and intimidation can never be free or fair, said the UNLF Chairman.

Mizoram’s Bru Coordination Committee (BCC) on June 28 sent a letter to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram asking the Centre to ensure rehabilitation for the 80 displaced Mizo families, allegedly driven out by Brus from Sakhan range in Tripura in 1998. In the letter Elvis Chorkhy, general secretary of the BCC, urged Chidambaram to give INR 80,000 to each displaced Mizo family, similar to the amount given to Bru families repatriated from the relief camps in North Tripura District and re-settled in Mizoram. Chorkhy mentioned that due to the demand by major civil societies in Mizoram that the Bru repatriation should not resume unless the displaced Mizos were rehabilitated, the ongoing repatriation process was derailed. “It is the desire of the BCC to ensure mutual satisfaction between the Mizo and Bru communities of Mizoram in the matter,” he said, adding, “the BCC wants peace, tranquility and communal harmony in the state, without which the present process of Bru repatriation cannot be successful”. The fourth phase of Bru repatriation, scheduled to commence from June 7, was stalled by the State Government in the wake of major NGOs and political parties demanding rehabilitation of the displaced Mizo families before resumption of the Bru repatriation.
