One person was killed and 20 others sustained injuries in a suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)-triggered explosion in the Bamunimaidan locality in Guwahati on September 1, The Hindu reported. The victim was identified as Ramlal Das, a cobbler from Begusarai district in Bihar. Police said a bomb kept in a three-wheeler went off at 11.45 am at the Railway Colony market of Bamunimaidan, a busy commercial area, leading to the explosion of three gas cylinders in the shops nearby. Several shops were gutted. The Telegraph quoted the senior superintendent of police Surendra Kumar as saying, “The bomb was probably planted in an auto van parked by the roadside. The injured include pedestrians, shoppers and vendors.”

According to Sangai Express, the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) militants were involved in the killing of KLA cadres, who had earlier hijacked two passenger vehicles from the Maphou dam area. In 2005, 115 extremist-related incidents were reported in which 41 civilians were killed and 62 persons abducted by militants. However, insurgency has declined in 2006 due to constant pressure and counter insurgency operations. He said that 102 insurgency-related incidents were reported in which 27 people were killed. He also added that militancy has drastically reduced till April 2007 in which only ten people were killed and five villagers abducted by the militants.

The militants fired about 15-20 rounds indiscriminately at the house when the house owner raised alarm. No casualty was reported in the incident.

Assam Police said that the three employees, identified as Samiran Shuklabaidya, a supervisor, and drivers Raju Khan and Munna Khan, were taken into the nearby forest. Suspected cadres of the same outfit also raided Kanjar Basti, largely inhabited by Bengali speaking persons, in the Karbi Anglong district. They reportedly set ablaze houses, shops and an auto rickshaw. According to The Hindu, two persons were killed and 25 others injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) was exploded by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants near a restaurant at Doomdooma town in the Tinsukia district on September 30-afternoon. Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), D.K. Pathak, said that one the two motorcycle-borne ULFA militants, carrying the IED, was killed and the other one was wounded in the blast. Further two persons were killed and 21 others wounded in another blast triggered by the ULFA at Tinsukia town. Later, two persons wounded in the blast succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. Another blast was triggered by suspected ULFA militants causing substantial damage to the pipeline of a public sector undertaking, Oil India Ltd, at Tengakhat in the Dibrugarh district on the same evening, according to Telegraph. B.C. Sarmah, chairman of the Assam Gas Company Limited, said the damage would disrupt gas distribution throughout upper Assam. The pipeline carries crude and natural gas from the oilfields of Dikom and Tengakhat to Duliajan. Meanwhile, Shillong Times reported that one more blast was triggered by the ULFA targeting another gas pipeline at an unspecified place under Lankashi police outpost in the Tinsukia district.
