An A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) militant, identified as Sengrak S Sangma alias Andalao Matgrik, was killed when Police commandos and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) raided a hide out of AMEF in Boldra Abri near Soba Jambal village in North Garo Hills on February 2, reports The Shillong Times. AMEF ‘chief’ Jack Marak, who was inside the camp, had a narrow escape. District Police Chief J F K Marak stated that “He (Jack) was spotted fleeing in a camouflage dress but due to the thick jungle and the terrain we could not nab him”. Security Forces (SFs) recovered 23 plastic explosives along with 65 detonators along with a 7.65 pistol containing three live rounds, 8 empty cases of AK rifle ammunition, two wireless communication handsets of Kenwood and Motorola, five demand letter pads of AMEF and other incriminating documents. The presence of plastic explosives in the hands of Garo out fits such as AMEF and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has been a worrying factor for SFs.

In a twist to the killing of Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) militant Sengrak S Sangma aka Andalao Matgrik, on February 2, AMEF claimed that the militant had survived the encounter but was shot dead later by Security Forces (SFs), reports The Shillong Times on February 4. According to the militant outfit the militant was merely hit on the thigh and later executed after necessary information was extracted from him. The North Garo Hills Police Chief, J F K Marak has refuted the allegation.

Unidentified militants torched a godown and cultivation fields at Thynroit village in East Khasi Hills on February 2, reports The Shillong Times. The godown belonged to an individual identified as Stewmon Nongspung. Fertilizer and farming equipment valued around INR 34,990 was destroyed in the incident. In a similar incident on the same night, unknown militants set fire to piles of bush in a cultivation field at Umaitnai Mawlali, Thynroit in East Khasi Hills, causing a loss of INR 16,000, reports The Shillong Times. Later, militants set fire to piles of bush in the cultivation field at Langsah village, Thynroi in the same District.

A teenage girl, identified as Manchi Ch Marak, and an unidentified militant of Achik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) were killed in a gun battle between the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and Achik Songna An’pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK), at Bolmaram Agalgre in East Garo Hills on February 3, reports The Assam Tribune. One more ASAK cadre is reportedly was injured. The Shillong Times further adds that GNLA has been battling several other militant groups to prevent them from encroaching into territory they claim to ‘dominate’ and there have been instances in the past when it had clashed with other militant groups such as Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) and Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B).

Assistant teacher of Tura Christian Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Iqbal Rafique, who was abducted on February 1, 2015, was released on February 5, reports The Shillong Times. According to West Garo Hills Police, a former militant of the Breakaway faction of Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC-B), identified as Silgrak Sangma was arrested on February 4 near the Nehru Park area in Danakgre in West Garo Hills in connection with the abduction. A 9 mm pistol with five live rounds of ammunition was also recovered from his possession. The former militant had come to pick up the ransom in exchange for Rafique, along with two others who managed to escape. Later an amount of INR 500000 meant as ransom was also recovered from the family of the victim. It is unclear if any ransom was paid to the abductors.

Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General (IG) Sudesh Kumar stated that Bangladesh no longer has any full-fledged training camp of any militant outfit, reports The Times of India on February 5. He added that BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are working in close co-ordination and sharing information on a regular basis. "There are 39 vulnerable locations which have been identified by the BSF. The BGB has assured us of full assistance," he said. IG also stated, "In November 2014, we had a conference with BGB to discuss issues related to border management," adding, "Security-related issues, particularly about the presence of insurgent groups like Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) were also discussed." He also stated that Government of India (GoI) has sanctioned INR 300 million for repairing the 443-kilometer road along the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya.

Police recovered explosives, detonators, INR 1500000 along with some incriminating documents and a laptop. District Police chief stated that Simseng G Momin was also the General Secretary of Rongjeng unit of Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), a civilian organisation. Another AMEF militant identified as Metronath Marak, residing in proper Chandmari in West Garo Hills District, who was to give shelter to Simseng G Momin was also arrested. A surrendered A'chik Songna An'pachakgipa Kotok (ASAK) militant, who was the ‘area commander’ of ‘southern command’, identified as Dimsrang M Sangma alias Nawal was arrested by South Garo Hills District for his alleged involvement in the abduction of State Bank of India (SBI) official SK Mishra. The bank official was abducted on August 5 at Barengapara road in Cherengpara village in West Garo Hills District. According to police, one of the key conspirators behind the abduction, Dimsrang had surrendered before Border Security Force (BSF) on January 13.
